I still think his words are more easily explained by assuming that he
was in shock at the time.

The comment he made in Catherine's bedroom seemed to imply that he
thought she put it there (as a prank?).  At any rate, if he did it out
of nervousness, he certainly wouldn't tell the cops about it, thus
betraying that nervousness.
