Lynch does like normal families also.  Compare the scenes of
the Hayward family with those mawkish scenes between the
young guy and girl (I can't remember the names) in Blue Velvet
-- especially the scene in the car outside the church and some
of the scenes at the diner.  I think Lynch either finds such
all--American stuff amusing or (if interviews with him are
to be believed) genuinely touching.
