Perhaps the mass of (near) fatalities is a negotiation ploy. Assume
Lynch has to reach salary figures on renewal series.  Putting a 
character in an ambiguous life/death situation makes it easy to
write them out.  At least Shakespeare waited to the end to 
plaster the cast.
