Actually, we don't know how/when her mother guessed she was dead (and not just missing etc), but we know her dad guessed with out being told. Remember -- He's on the phone with his wife, and see's that Sherif Truman is looking for him. Mr Palmer says "Is this about Laura?" and when Harry nods Mr. Palmer starts to lose it and drops the phone, Mrs. Palmer is now screeming, and *then* when Ben Horne walks in Mr. Palmer says (something like) "My Daughter is dead" ..brandyt.
