Is this stretching it too far? Yes. You'll notice that the sherrif *does* ask Pete who is dead. You'll notice that Pete doesn't just say "Oh look, a corpse. How interesting." He's pretty surprised, shocked, and nervous. And finally, there's the fact that Pete didn't know who it was either.
