It is nearly always the case I'm not 'assuming' anything of the sort. Let's make the (explicit, this time) assumption that the book never existed. Is the movie now better because it is no longer 'a literal interpretation' of a book that has 'fail[ed] miserably'? No, it's still bad, because it substitutes set dressing and special effects for a richer, more involving story that is clearly lurking in the background. As I mentioned in my original message I haven't even read the book (explicit assumption lifted now), and the movie is still overinflated and without substance.
