The obvious (!) thing to me is that Big Ed's wife (forgot her name)
is fleeing from sensory input: drapes to remove or diminish her
view of the outside world, silent runners to reduce the sound coming
to her. Might give added meaning to her having one eye and suicidal.

Darkness+silence=removal from world=death.
