My wife believes that "Good News!  The gum...(etc.)" refers to
Doublemint (sp?) Gum or, more specifically, to the Doublemint
twins.

Also, is it possible that DAY ONE in Laura's diary refers to the
first day that she and her cousin switch places (entered by her
cousin, of course).
