Subject: Fooling with the sound, south of the border From: adam@cs.UAlberta.CA (Michel Adam; Gov't of NWT) Date: 1990-09-08, 23:43 Newsgroups: alt.tv.twin-peaks I am not quite sure what to make of this, but: I get to see TP on friday, piped in by cable from the indepedent station in Edmonton, Alberta. This last friday, they showed two episodes back to back. I also get to see the broadcast from the Detroit ABC station, on saturday. I happened to tape both, and there are a few differences in the soundtrack and the way they showed the episodes. First, the canadian broadcast must have been done from a different set of tapes. The credits where for individual episodes, and they where shown as such. The US broadcast had a 'part1' and 'part2' directorial credit, and while there was a commercial break at the half-way mark, it was shown as a two hours episode. Now for the interresting part: the scene where Bobby arrives at Leo's house, watched by Leo with binocular and a gun. The dialogue goes something like this (the parts in bracket where mostly inaudible or completely missing in the U.S. showing!): Bobby arriving at the house. cut to Leo in the truck from his scanner: [SOUND EFFECT, better call Hawk on that one, SOUND EFFECT] cut to Bobby on the porch, yelling: SHELLEY! cut to Leo in the truck: [Bobby Brigg] (very clearly pronounced in the Edmonton version, barely mumbled in the Detroit version. The picture was the same...) cut to Bobby entering the house, cut to Leo's gunsight: Leo speaking: [Come on] lover boy, Leo's waiting ... (the 'come on' in COMPLETELY missing this time ...) ..... numerous scenes inside the house ..... cutting to outside, Leo waiting with constitutional amendment in hand: [SOUND EFFECT, Lucy talking on the radio: Bird seeds? No this bird eats fruits. The sherrif says it's a witness.] cut to the shot of the scanner: No, not just because it saw something, because it talks! cut to Leo again: [and it need to be fed ...] --------- The actual backgroud music during this scene is not affected by the sound drop-off. Does anyone have an idea why these sound games are being played? Can someone who taped the first showing check on this? Is it possible that Lynch is revising the second showing, removing what seems to be too obvious (clear reference to the bird, vs. 'because it talks'), as if he was given a second kick at the can?
