I agree. although Tony Hillerman is one of the most respected mystery writers around, he seems to have missed the whole point of Twin Peaks. The story is not supposed to be a standard mystery, where clues and motives all must be hinted at through the course of the story. Rather, Lynch is toying with the most basic dictates of the mystery genre to tell his story in a new and interesting way. I write mysteries in my spare time and Lynch really does break most of the rules. Hillerman doesn't understand that. The other "authors" comments (Jackie Collins, Andrew Greeley) were, IMHO, pretty idiotic. Incidentally, TwinPeaks fans who really like Deputy Hawk might like Tony Hillerman's mysteries. They're set on the Navajo reservations in New Mexico and Arizona and his detectives are Navajo Tribal Police officers. The stories usually concern murder tied up with Navajo religious/mystical beliefs and are generally very well-written.
