Someone here claimed that Laura's friends/lovers etc. would notice if there'd
been a switch with Madeline. Someone else claims that James could've been
the third man Laura had sex with on the night of her death.

Well, the fact of the matter is that Laura's friends/lovers DID notice.
James specifically states that "Laura was like a different person," that she
wouldn't see him, and that he couldn't get through to her.
I seriously doubt that she and James had sex on the night of her death under
these conditions.
