Subject: Quickies on Season Premiere From: mathews@cs.Buffalo.EDU (Ryan D Mathews) Date: 1990-10-01, 11:37 Newsgroups: alt.tv.twin-peaks When I saw "Directed by David Lynch", I figured this would be a good one. It was. I was so afraid that Twin Peaks was in danger of losing its gimmick and becoming another prime time soap. I've never been a big fan of the mill subplot because it seemed too much like a Dynasty plot. But now we have lots of new things to play with! Donna's nuts! In fact, it seems that both Donna and Madelyne want to become more like Laura. To solve her murder? Maybe. But it's weird nonetheless. What the hell is freaking out Maddy? Was that blood she saw on the carpet, or was it scorching? Both would be appropriate. To the person who was "ticked" because the murderer of Laura Palmer was not revealed: if you're watching it solely for that, you're bound to be disappointed. I love what Lynch is doing to me as a viewer. It's kind of a wonderful masochism. Part of me wishes the answer could never be revealed, that they could only approach it asymptotically. I am so hoping that when what is really going on in Twin Peaks is fully and completely revealed, perhaps at the end of one more season after this, that it will be so shocking and unexpected that it will turn our faces white as a sheet, and then the series will end. Twin Peaks has the possiblity of attaining the same status as The Prisoner, if played correctly. Here, for posterity, are the giant's prophecies (corrections welcome): "There is a man in a smiling bag" "Leo was locked in a hungry house" "The Owls are not what they seem" "One has seen the third man. Three have seen him, yes... but not his body. One only, know to you." The first two prophecies have come true right away, which is a refreshing change. The third one sounds like something the Log Lady would say. In fact she was quoted as saying that in the Secret Diary. What is that giant? If Cooper truly was not dreaming, then Twin Peaks has entered a whole 'nother realm. I'd like to see the looks on the faces of those jerk writers who made Twin Peaks predictions for TV guide. Twin Peaks doesn't follow their "soap opera rules", that much should be utterly clear now. Ohmigod, what an ending! It seems Laura may have had more of a hand in her own death than anyone previously thought. What is she chopping up? Do I want to know? All in all, I must say this was one in-obscenity-credible season premiere. ---------- Ryan Mathews -- Internet : mathews@cs.buffalo.edu Bitnet : mathews@sunybcs UUCP :{apple, cornell, decwrl, harvard, rutgers, talcott, ucbvax, uunet}! cs.buffalo.edu!mathews
