Laura/Bob theory revisited. Organization: Massachusetts Institute of Technology Date: Mon, 1 Oct 90 20:25:47 GMT Lines: 98 First, for reference sake, a transcript of the Giant's second speech, I haven't bothered to get the first one word for word. Cooper's dialogue is paraphrased. The Giant:I forgot to tell you something. [cooper: you were right about the man in the smiling bag.] The things I tell you will not be wrong. [cooper starts to ask question] Better to listen than to talk. [cooper, I believe you] Don't search for all the answers at once. A path is made one stone at a time. One person saw the third man. Three have seen him -- yes -- but not his body, one only known to you, ready now to talk. One more thing: you forgot something. Interesting stuff. Carl, in article <1990Oct1.0093D854.DOAFC8A0@robot.nuceng.efl.edu>, makes some statements about the nature of Ronette's vision that are hard to swallow. As my reading this afternoon indicates, the theory that Bob is an alter ego of Laura or a manifestation of the evil in the woods, focused through Laura, seems quite popular. > > Come on, give it up... Theories are fun, but when proven wrong they > >should be dropped, not clung to. Actually, before I watched the last episode I was leaning towards a Truman/Packard conspiracy theory. It was only after I got the new data that I came to hold my present convictions. > > David Lynch used many things to indicate that a third person was ivolved. > >The ending sequence (very well done I might add) shows Killer Bob very > >clearly, as well as a primal screaming Laura. The letters under the fingernail, remember? > > It looks to me liek [sic] Laura somehow got involved with this Bob character > >(drug dependancy, emotional dependancy, cult worship, something) and > >because he was quite crazy, she started to lose her own mental stability. > > Or maybe Bob is the focal point of an evil manifestation in the woods, and > >Laura caught some of it as a backlash. > > Not that I care that much. But it's certainly entertaining reading all the > >desperate attempts here to keep pet theories alive in the face of new > >data. The above interpretation, that Bob is just some random serial killer who happened to kill Laura Palmer, seems somewhat simplistic considering the fantastic, paranormal roller coaster ride of visions, dwarfs, and giants Lynch and Frost have taken us on. It is highly unlikely that Ronette's dream was a window on reality, about as likely that Cooper's dream with the man from the other place was real. Instead I tend to agree with Gerry Grosz's interpretation of Ronette's dream. See article <1990Oct1.043231.33743@eagle.wesleyan.edu> for more details. Anyway, here is my theory, revised by a night's sleep: Bob, who is Laura, killed Ronette and Laura. Bob is an alternate sort of personality developed to deal with the psychological trauma of being molested by her father, Leland. To prevent his discovery, Leland wraps his daughter in plastic and tosses her in the river. In an early post, I thought that theory was incomplete because it didn't deal with who shot Cooper; it also left Josie without any role in the murder, which seemed unlikely considering how naughty she is. The Giant's first words in appearance number two seem to explain. "Don't search for all the answers at once." Perhaps the giant is telling Cooper that the Laura's death and his shooting were not related. Instead, Josie and Ben thought that Cooper was getting close to uncovering there scheme up at the mill and sent someone to kill him. Not sure who, maybe Hank, maybe the Asian man next door. This could well be an attempt to create a new plot line that will carry the show through the season if and when we discover who killed Laura Palmer. A couple of other people have made relevant posts regarding this theory. One of particular interest I have included here: Darryl Cate in article <1990Oct1.134439.8685@csc.ti.com> writes: > >I think Leland killed Laura. In the first dream sequence (are > >the giant visits dreams ?) Killer BOB states that he will capture > >with his death-bag, and will kill again. And > >Leland killed him. > >Also, I think that in all the chaos of the train car scene, the > >letter 'R' ended up under the wrong girl's fingernail, and it > >was meant for 'R'onnette (like the 'T'hersa Banks, earlier). In fact, > >Leland my have been thinking he was killing Ronnette the whole time, > >up until that wild scream at the end. There is also the possibility that this theory is completely wrong. But, then, that's the fun of watching Twin Peaks. It's not imperative that I found out who killed Laura Palmer soon; it's too much fun guessing who may have done it. Anxiously awaiting more clues, Jeremy Hylton, jerhy@athena.mit.edu "I killed Laura Palmer."
