I think the spirit of the Log Lady's dead husband resides in the
log.

Doesn't the diary explain that the LL's husband was fighting a
fire in the woods when he fell and hit his head on the ground
(the log perhaps)?

The log "sees" things and "talks" to the LL.

What other explanation is there?
