Two reasons for why James started to sing a song:

1. Early in the shows, he mentions that his father is a musician somewhere
on the West Coast -- not dead.  His mother sleeps around.

2. He is trying to emulate his father.  I suspect that James' father will
soon come onto the scene.  A recent interview with singer Chris Isaaks of
the San Francisco Bay Area said that he was a TP fan and David Lynch
was goind to get him into the show -- he had already contributed to 
the soundtrack of WIld at Heart and DL would pay him back with a role.
I think that Chris will enter the scene as Mr. Hurley!
