One thought is that the letters were cut from the cover of a
Fleshworld magazine.  That paper is thicker, probably plastic-coated,
and would be more easily inserted and removed from a fingernail
without disintegrating.

This assumes small print on either the back cover or the inside
of the front or back cover, which is not an unreasonable assumption.
