Laura just might not have felt like telling James that she was with Bobby when he killed someone. Laura went out of her way to keep the dark side of her life out of view from people, James included. If she had told him she was there, he might have asked "what were you doing at a murder scene??", to which she might have answered, "oh, at the time I had just stolen a kilo of coke from these gangster types. BOB tells me that Satan is saving a seat for me as a result of that night." Laura wasn't interested in this type of discussion with James.
