How sure are you that that's not the gun that shot Cooper? :)
Seriously, considering that Renault wants Cooper dead (he claims it's
because of Jacques' death, but that doesn't ring true to me), and
considering that the gun that shot Cooper was silenced, as is
Renault's, I think Renault was the gunman.

In fact, I'm wondering if Renault is Cooper's ex-partner,
faking a french accent--after all, he and Cooper haven't met face-
to-face yet.  But I doubt it, actually, because he expected Ben
Horne to recognize him when he presented the ransom demand.
