For one thing, Lynch has never backed away from showing people who
"really are *that* 'evil' on their own."  And anyway, you're missing
the forest for the trees - the Leland case turned out to be demonic
possession, but what about Ben and Leo and the rest of the criminals?
Leo has battered Shelley a few times and even tried to torch her to
death.  He's hardly a "nice guy" with a demon riding his soul.
