Those of you who hate "diary-based theories" hit N now... I agree that either Bobby, the Major (Don Davis - is this the same Don Davis that did the paintings in _Cosmos_?), or Bobby's mother will die soon. In the diary, Bobby shoots a guy point blank in the heart, and Laura later has a dream where the man comes back to life, and says to Bobby: "You had better watch yourself. Murder is just a way of shaking hands with Death, and saying `What's mine, is yours.' Eventually Death comes looking for you, or a friend, or a relative."
