I wonder how long Catherine has known that her brother was
not drowned.  Perhaps she has known  for years. That
would explain her long-standing  hostility towards Josie and
and might justify her keeping two sets of books of the mill and
secretly taking money from the mill. That money could have been
for Andrew's expenses while he was in hiding. He has a right to
mill money as the still living legal owner of the mill.
