Sure, why not?  Perhaps someone can/will confirm/deny this; but there *was no*
'Mr. Tojimura' (sp?) in reality, so a check endorsed by 'him' should be
value-less (I think, anyway).

How about this speculation --

Josie was beaten *because* the check was no good (I do seem to recall
that Ben gave Josie the check, didn't he?)
