Subject: Miscellany From: ewm@caen.engin.umich.edu (Ernst W Mayer) Date: 1991-01-21, 11:23 Newsgroups: alt.tv.twin-peaks Some miscellaneous questions, observations and opinions: 1) Is the actor who plays Albert Rosenfeld (Miguel Ferrer) any relation to Jose Ferrer? There appears (to me) to be a definite resemblance and no, all persons with Spanish surnames do not look alike to me. 2) Is Dana Ashbrook Robby Benson's evil twin brother? I liked him better early in the show, when he was an eviller dude (don't feel obliged to correct my speling or grammer, here.) 3) IMO, the chess game is highly overrated as a mirror of the plot. The opening so far is peurile, symmetric (Ben Horne would like this) and boring with a capital B. Old farts would probably contradict me on this point, saying that the opening is "classical" or something to that effect. I think they should get the knights involved (the "white horse", perhaps) and, now that some diagonal lanes are opened, the bishops, if they want to make things interesting, but then again, maybe they don't. Where is Garry Kasparov when you need him? Then again, if they had wanted to make things REALLY interesting, the game would have been Go, not chess. This would have tied in nicely with both the China connection and with the nonwestern thought/eastern mysticism plot line in the show. I quote from Trevanian's "Shibumi": "Go is to western chess as philosophy is to double-entry accounting" - Nicholai Alexandrovitch Hel to a curious military MP. "No Shit?" - the MP. Readers familiar with this novel will probably agree that both Cooper and Major Briggs are on the path to becoming men of shibumi. 4) No doubt about it, the widow is a witch. It's possible that little Nicky is, also, but not probable. Which witch is which, I'm not sure of. Since when did Hawk become a raving egotist, or this part of the widow's spell? What, if any, is the significance of the milk drink they were having while held in thrall by the widow? Who am I so wise in the ways of science? Are they going to build a bridge out the widow? Do small pebbles really float? Is Bob, who was an owl, now a duck? How much does the duck weigh? Am I trying to avoid getting any real work done? *--Ernst W.
