  Why not aim for the most simple solution: the body is that of an innocent  
street-person.  There is no reason to believe anything more than that.  It 
also adds a certain amount of menace/evil to Wyndham's character: he can 
kill a stranger in cold blood, with no further purpose than to scare his 
ex-partner.
