What makes you think it is only *now* becoming active?  BOB and Mike (or is
it MIKE?) have been around for a while, the town people have seemed to
express that the woods have always been "strange," etc.  Perhaps BOB and
Mike are/were from the ship, and things get really weird only when one of
them is out hunting for a new host?

Anyway, just speculationg, I don't hold much credence to the theory.
