Your anecdote about your kid learning stuff reminded of of what I did
when Kim was that age. For the reasons that you mention, I decided to
take advantage of that incredible capacity for retention and taught her
to singsong "The square of the hypotenuse is equal to the sum of the ..."

She had it down perfectly in about 5 minutes! The only problem was that
we moved to Italy when she was in sixth grade, so she learned it in
Italian in school! But still, there was that wondrous day when she came
home with a big grin on her face and said "MOMMY, we learned about
the square of the hypotenuse!"
