Subject: an except from a letter From: rdonahue@spdcc.COM (Bob Donahue) Date: 1991-02-23, 11:45 Newsgroups: alt.tv.twin-peaks I don't know exactly why I am sharing this --- but why not. I have written a letter in support of ^TP^ and thought I'd pass along part of it. PLEASE DON'T copy this for your own letters! Be *creative*! Thanks. BBC ------------ begin included stuff ------- [other stuff I wrote omitted for breveity] I would like to remind you of an similar set of circumstances occurring at a television network some years ago. It was airing a show which only drew mediocre ratings, yet held some critical acclaim, and had its share of fans. The show muddled along for two years, then was nearly cancelled but after a show of support from some fans was reluctantly permitted a third season, but in a late (10PM) Friday night slot. This time slot caused the ratings to plummet and the show was axed thereafter, presumably to be forgotten. It is interesting that the current circumstances surrounding ``Twin Peaks'' in 1991, and ``Star Trek'' in 1969 are so similar. Please do not make the same mistake that NBC did then. I'm sure that they do not look back at their decision without a great deal of regret. ``Twin Peaks'' holds lots of promise, not as a cult show, nor because it has generated a following, but because it \fIis\fR `good' television. I am sure that you and others at ABC would like to be remembered 20 years from now as people who valued quality television and had the foresight to uphold those values and not ``those people who canned a good show before it found its niche and blossomed''. In closing I would like to thank you for only placing the show on hiatus, thereby giving myself and others the opportunity to express our feelings while there is still time hopefully to make some sort of difference. While the opinions of one viewer from New Mexico may not amount to much in the larger scheme of things, the fact that I have taken the time to express my opinions does at least indicate that I would feel a loss were this show to be cancelled permanently. (Indeed, this is the first letter I have ever written to a network!) Again thank you, and I hope to see more quality programming at the level of ``Twin Peaks'' (and including ``Twin Peaks'') airing on ABC affiliates in the future. [etc.]
