Subject: What's with the alien markings?

Forgive me if this subject has been bashed around already, but our news
system purged everything from last week--read or not! :-(

The symbol found in Owl Cave is supposedly a combination of the two symbols
found on Major Briggs and the Log Lady, right?  I thought, however, that 
the arrangement of triangles was itself a triangular pattern.  When did
someone get the idea to draw them in a straight line?  Am I looking at the 
patterns wrong?  Do I need to be sent in for calibration?

E-mail appreciated.  Again, my apologies if this issue has been done to death.
