Having come from apple country, I assure you that apples don't grow with wax on them. In the packing houses they are washed, rinsed, dried, and waxed. I believe that the wash is not just water, but some other solution (maybe just ordinary soap), but what it does and doesn't remove is unknown. Personally, I really don't care.
