 I've just made a complete fool of myself! Regardless of how the moon's stages 
are produced, the moon moves so swiftly on its apparent course through the
segments of the sky that it would not be a useful way to indicate a unique 
time or location. For instance, a full moon in Libra, say, must be fairly
commonplace but an eclipse of the sun against Libra would happen once
"in a blue moon".   ;-)
