Subject: Predictions are useless From: jacobw@phoenix.Princeton.EDU (Jacob S Weinstein) Date: 1991-04-21, 14:18 Newsgroups: alt.tv.twin-peaks Now, I'm as big a fan of alt.tv.tp as the next guy, but I think I'm beginning to agree that all our interpretations, predictions, and speculations are just a tad useless. Look at it this way: if you think back to the first season, and the beginning of this one, you'll realize that nobody had a snowball's chance in hell of figuring out WKLP. Really. The only clue I can think of that we were given is that the only time BOB appeared outside of Coop's visions was in the Palmer household. Can anyone think of any other bits of evidence? (I should note that I missed two or three episodes after WKLP was revealed to us, so they may have explained some things I missed.) Frankly, when I found out that BOB was in Leland, I was just a tad pissed, precisely because it seemed so random; he could just as well have possessed any of the characters. Now, though, I'm beginning to see that Twin Peaks' inexplicable nature is precisely why I liked it so much. The 4/18 episode was so much better than the previous ones simply because it WAS inexplicable; I suspect we'll never get an explanation as to why, say, the red curtains were reflected in the puddle at the end, and I think we're better off that way. I don't know if this is true for everybody else, but for me, the images that linger in my memory from the first season, and the beginning of this one, are the ones that were never explained. Remember the fish in the coffee pot? Remember that fat kid break dancing in the hall of TP high in the very first episode? Remember the creamed corn kid? None of these were ever explained. None of these ever _should_ be explained. Of course, I'm not saying that I want everything to remain a mystery. I would have been annoyed if we didn't find out WKLP. I do think the two main plots -- WE v. Coop and the Black lodge V. The White Lodge -- will be wrapped up, at least in some fashion. I just don't think we'll ever see some sort of Grand Unified Theory from Lynch/Frost. At least, I hope we never do. ****************************** *Jacob Weinstein * ****************************** @@ @@@@@< / ^ @@@ < Artist's conception ( * %@@@ < < @@ 0 @@ (% @@ ^L___
