I think that the zig zag pattern under Cooper's feet indicates that while he is inside he is "on a different wavelength" from his companions, Truman and Andy. Ghosts may exist on this astral plane, this psychic wavelength - the same wavelength that Laura's mother can pick up. Ghosts could be nothing more than lasting psychic impressions left from very powerful experiences. The moment of Laura's death was a very powerful and intense moment so if it is possible for a feeling to "linger in the air" after Laura's death, that screaming could go on and on. Similarily Lelland's denial of his obvious guilt "leaves a lasting impression". Perhaps the visions of Laura and Lelland that Cooper encountered on the psychic wavelength were nothing more than that kind of lingering echo. My favourite line in the show was "Wow Bob Wow." Because it is the same backwards and forwards and because it could mean two things. It could just be the dwarf expressing admiration for Bob's growing powers or it could be a hint that Bob is creating the entire illusion that Cooper believes he is experiencing. If Bob is creating the coffee itself then if his powers wobble for a minute, if his hand is not steady, he could set up a "wow" and flutter in his illusion. Bob seems to be the devil or head demon in charge of the entire Black Lodge. a.h.
