Actually, I interpret "Through the darkness of future past.." in the following
way.  The furure past means the future of the past.  In our time frame, the
present, that means the past.  So there was some darkness in the past...

So I don't think they, meaning Frost and Lynch, planned this movie all along.

Of course, I have been wrong before.
