I always figured that after the original dream-sequence / MIKE-meets-BOB
scenes were written for the European extended edition, Lynch and Frost
decided to incorporate them into the script for #002.  That way all that
footage wouldn't go to waste.  It raises the question of how much of the
MIKE / BOB / Black Lodge plotline was actually thought out in advance...

Also, how could MIKE have recognized the police sketch of BOB in that scene?
They didn't make the sketch until the fourth or fifth episode.  And Sarah
Palmer hadn't even seen BOB in the pilot, which meant that it was totally
missing from the European version...  unless they added more than we thought...
