Not necessarily evil, though the themes in the show connect dark with evil. I think that dark (or evil) being something to be purged is a bit too simplistic. Hawk also calls the "shadow self" the "dweller on the threshold". Threshold of what? You obviously have to deal with the doppleganger before getting through the doorway - i have assumed that the doorway to the White lodge is the goal. Maybe not. In psychological sense it probably has something to do with being able to contain your "evil" side (reminiscent of Star Trek's episode when Captain Kirk is split into his aggressive and compassionate parts...)
