Unless you somehow found sympathy for the Harkonnen, and the Emperor, Dune _did_ have a happy ending. The Fremen's savior had arrived and it finally rained on Arrakis. The content of the story may have been disheartening (friend becomes a traitor, father's assassinated, Paul uprooted from home planet, war, etc. ) but the ending was not. As for the Elephant Man, the ending is less clear, but there is the whole idea of his (John's?) recognition of his humanity. Rocky Giovinazzo
