The diary, like Coop's autobiography (which said that Coop was the one who found the letter under Teresa's finger) and the Access Guide (which says that you can't get TV in Twin Peaks... guess fans of "Invitation to Love" were hallucinating the whole time), aren't officially considered accurate. Remember, in the show itself, the excerpts from the diary that they read weren't quite the same as in the book. I guess the books have the same relationship to TV/movie TP as the Star Trek novels do to the TV show. Accept them if you want, but the producers feel free to ignore them when convenient.
