According to the Diary, and I think, some remarks in the series, Coop clearly suspects he has an important destiny and that he is in TP at that time for a special reason, but he doesn't know what it is. My own theory is that one thing he goes into the lodge for (though he doesn't know it at the time) is to redeem Laura's soul from the equivalent of purgatory, hence the angel scene at the end of FWWM. He can't prevent her murder, but he does triumph in the end. -Rich
