Season 1, Episode 02: Zen, or the Skill to Catch a Killer — April 19–25, 1990
FBI Agent Dale Cooper demonstrates an unusual deductive technique for the Twin Peaks Sheriff's Department; Benjamin Horne and his brother, Jerry, take a trip to One-Eyed Jacks; Donna Hayward and James Hurley pledge their love; Leo Johnson holds Bobby Briggs at gunpoint; Cooper has a strange dream.

Lost in those woods and Mystery Man bernhard@umn-cs.cs.umn.edu (Bruce Bernhardt) 1990-04-19 05:48
In an earlier article Dave Mack (csu@alembic.acs.com) quotes from the tape to Dr. Jacoby from Laura: %"James is sweet but he's so dumb. I should have met you a long time ago, %Dr. Jacoby, because right now I can take just so much sweet. I just %know I'm gonna get lost in those woods again tonight, I just know it. %Remember me telling you about that Mystery Man? Well..." %I assumed from this that Dr. Jacoby is helping Laura act out some of %her not-so-sweet fantasies, one of which involves meeting the Mystery %Man in the woods. Could "lost in those woods tonight" be getting high on cocaine? Since Laura's mother is a psychic, Laura may be somewhat psychic also. This man might come to her in her dreams (which she would be telling the doctor about) or in her cocaine induced altered state. The doctor could be providing her with the drugs as part of her "therapy"; which he told the sheriff her parents didn't know about. More speculation t45126@iemisi.dhc (John Durko) 1990-04-19 06:10
Here are some more thoughts and possibilities. 1. The attacks on the two girls are not related. Leo raped the second girl and that is why he had blood on his shirt. The magazine in the safety deposit box look like a place where people advertise for sex. Leo advertised in there and when he checked out his own ad, he recognised a girl from his own town and gave her a call. 2. The killer must be someone that we know because i can't beleive that david lynch would pull in some unknown person and an unrelated satanic plot just to provide us with someone to pin the blame on. Therefore maybe the dream people (the indian looking guy and possibly the one armed man) are symbols for someone else. For example, there are two other indians in the story, Hawk and the loony brother at the lodge (Have we ever actually had a good look at him??). 3. What excuse is special agent cooper going to use to hang around after the killer is found in order to continue the series as we know it?? (is there such thing as an FBI regular agent?)[src]
hearts from all cbrooks@sun.udel.edu (Chris Brooks) 1990-04-19 06:23
Another theory on the hearts-- Perhaps, all of the young girls gave half hearts to their boyfriends. That would mean that Laura, Donna, Ronnette all at sometime had a whole heart, and James and the other guys all at some time possessed a half. The Twin Peaks teen fad?[src]
Donuts mposner@gpu.utcs.utoronto.ca (Eli Posner) 1990-04-19 08:19
This is a really minor point unrelated to the murder: Can someone tell me what the joke is about the millions of donuts that are always neatly organized and stacked whenever the sherrif and his men are meeting? In the pilot, right before Cooper went to sleep he was in the police station with Truman and there must have been 50 donuts layed out. You`ll see this again in this weeks episode (that's not a real spoiler, don't worry). Eli[src]
Twin Peaks: predictions! wwd@cellar.uucp (Bill Donahue) 1990-04-19 08:59
Some predictions to be disproven tonight: - Cooper will disclose that the letter found under the first girl's fingernail was a 'J', throwing suspicion on characters from another network's prime time soap. - The sheriff will be surprised when Lucy the receptionist has a 'W' under her fingernail, but then she explains its a current fad inspired by words to some popular song. Apparently Ronnette didn't hear the song. The fad is to put a letter unrelated to anything about you under a fingernail, and no word beginning with 'W' could apply to Lucy. - Alburt, the other FBI man will show up and prove himself to be in that same mysterious cult as the deputy and "Big Ed". The cult has strange rituals of picking noses and playing charades. - Bobby, Mike and Leo are putting together a ballet troup, practicing in Leo's unfinished home. We saw part of Leo's performance last week, spinning a sock over his wife's head to music on the radio. They call the troup the "Big Pussycats". Next Week: - Johnny graduates to fourth grade! - Audrey discovers she likes Bulgaria! - Cooper joins the ballet troup! - Sarah get over her grief! - Diane gets a letter for her fingernail. An answer & a question raveling@isi.edu (Paul Raveling) 1990-04-19 09:19
Last night I talked to Scott Frost, Mark's brother, and confirmed this answer: What happens in the future has nothing to do with the murderer revealed in the European pilot. They had completed the pilot without knowing that it was to be distributed in Europe as a videotape; the folks involved with that declared that they needed an ending, so they quickly trumped up an ending for the European tape. About tonight's program, #3... It promises that extra touch that comes from being directed by David Lynch. I asked "Can you suggest something to look for in #3 that can be disclosed without causing a serious bean spill?" Answer: "Let me think a minute... Look for what the relation is between Agent Cooper and the Dalai Lama." Dalai Lama????? ---------------- Paul Raveling Raveling@isi.edu[src]

In the preview, when Bobby is comforting Shelly Johnson (as Cooper said, "is that Johnson with a J?"), he says (real slow, Bobby-like), "if..he..ever..does..something..like..that..to..you..again....I'll.. kill..him". What's interesting is that the accent is on "him", not on "kill" (as in "I'll kill him too"). Or course maybe at that point in the show he's already killed James or something. - Adam Barr[src]

Also, the actress who plays Donna said in an interview that she plays the good girl, which could be construed as a slip of the tongue in such a mystery story. I saw Blue Velvet for the first time this week, and was quite surprised at the upbeat ending. 'Dune' also ended on a high note, so if you like happy endings like I do, I'd guess we're in for another optimistic ending from Lynch. I'm not convinced that Sarah Palmer's visions are anything more than hallucinations brought on by grief over the death of her daughter. As for the cocaine angle, Laura, Mike and Bobby are supposed to deliver $20,000 to Leo. This is about what a pound of cocaine would cost. I suspect that she didn't need to get it from Dr. Jacoby. Jacoby's behavior, both in the hospital when he first met Cooper, and later while he was listening to her tape, suggests that his relationship with Laura was sexual. Both the tone and phrasing of Laura's message to Jacoby made it sound like an invitation to meet her in the woods the night of her murder. A pre-planned meeting with Dr. Jacoby would also explain Laura's abrupt exit at the light at Spark's Wood and 21, when she left James Hurley. She didn't want to be late for her 1 AM appointment with the Mystery Man. -- Dave Mack[src]

Tonight's episode sjl8335@cec1.wustl.edu (Scott James Ladewig) 1990-04-19 20:16
A couple things got me wondering tonight.
1st: We hear Horne telling his brother Jerry that there
is a new girl at One-Eyed Jack's who is fresh from
the perfume counter. Then we hear that Ronette had
just quit her job at the perfume counter in a local
store. Hmmm.
2nd: Audrey Horne aska Donna if Laura ever spoke about her
father. Maybe she was working at One-Eyed Jack's for
a while? What was he singing to her?
3rd: Wer hear Audrey refer to the music as being quite dreamy
(which it is) and then in Agent Cooper's dream the midget
talks about there always being music where he and the Laura
thing come from. dreamy music...same music in a dream?
and I know it has been posted, but what is the name of the album with
the music from the show on it?

"...but sometimes my arms bend back" mposner@gpu.utcs.utoronto.ca (Eli Posner) 1990-04-19 20:19
After this weeks episode, I still claim that Audrey Horne is the most interesting character (not just her body). I'm really hung up on the diner scene. What was the point of it, everyone's wondering. I think the key exchange is when silly Audrey becomes relatively serious for a moment and asks "Did Laura ever talk about my father?" We'll learn more about this later probably. Everyone noticed the moosehead picture in Laura's room, right? It's just Lynch bugging nitpickers again. BTW, what exactly did Cooper say when he saw that bloody cloth or whateerv it was? Can anyone guess what's in those TWO ledgers? What's going on between Pete and Josie? What the hell does "I feel like I know her but sometimes my arms bend back." mean? Lastly, why did Laura touch her nose? I apparently missed Ed and Sherrif exchanging a nose touching. When was this? Am I the only one pleasantly confused? Eli[src]
Discussion of clues musi@tank.uchicago.edu (bradley alan music) 1990-04-19 21:21
Just saw #3 (including pilot); wow! I love this show. 1- Ed and sheriff Truman have something (possibly) illicit going on; otherwise why wouldn't he have told Cooper about Ed's being slipped a Mickey the night of the fight in the bar/stakeout? At least I assume he didn't tell Cooper; Ed clearly didn't want to tell Truman while Cooper was around. What's up here? Was Laura's nosetap in the dream tipping Cooper off about this? 2- The girl in shock (Ronnette P.) worked at "the perfume counter" until recently. Ring a bell? The new girl in the whorehouse was described as `fresh from the perfume counter', or something like that. Sounds like a recruitment office for One-Eyed Jack's. Assume for a moment that Laura was working at the bordel; this *could* explain: - why she had sex with 3 men that night - why Audrey's father "sang to her". In the bordel, he waxed poetic with the Madame. If he were one of Laura's clients, he may have been enamoured and sung `to' her in Audrey's hearing. And yet he showed *so*little* surprise when he heard Laura was found dead, which is itself suspicious. In any case, I think that perfume counter business is a clear link between Ronnette and the bordel. 3- Who do you think that other guy in the woods with Leo was? possibly the one Laura's mom sees and agent Cooper dreamed about...? 4- I think there's only one necklace. The Doc just happened to be cruising around the woods (maybe because he knew from the tapes that Laura hung out in that area?) and saw/overheard Donna and James. I think he's in love with Laura, and he may be the Mystery Man she refers to. Other clues yet to be discussed here are why Laura broke up with James *that*night*, why Leo returned early from his trip, the link to the other murder, the midget,... damn, there are a lot! And my most oft repeated question whilst viewing; why don't Ed and Shelley leave their respectively schizo and sadistic mates? Geez. - Brad[src]
Episode 3 Robert.Berry@samba.acs.unc.edu (BBS Account) 1990-04-19 22:06
Lynch *had* to direct that episode. Nobody else could have done that dream sequence justice. I wonder about a couple of things in that dream. We heard the names Mike and Bob--we already know a Mike and Bobby. And about the "sometimes my arms bend back" line--I have no idea what it means, but remember what we saw Nadine doing to the rowing machine? And apparently, that really was Laura's cousin, not Laura, in the dream, since next week's TV guide says that Laura's cousin, who resembles her, is going to show up.[src]

Did anyone see the black shadow on the drapes during the last dream of Cooper? Any ideas as to what it is? Nose touching? I missed this in the first two? episodes. Another question- Why was the mother of Laura making the big deal about "What's going on in this house" (as if not only her, her daughter and the house is possesed) - when the father of Laura was dancing with the portrait of Laura. Pennsylvania 6-5000? Just thought these were some interesting points/questions. Reply to: jeff@arthur.WWU.EDU (internet) n8743196@unicorn.WWU.EDU[src]

No. What you do is
(a) have each actor record all his/her lines normally
(b) play them back reversed - sounds like gibberish
(c) have each actor LEARN that gibberish by heart! i.e., learn to
make the right mouth noises to imitate his/her backwards speech
(d) record THAT
(e) play the result *in reverse*. The result is garbled squishy
sounding "speech."
As a side effect, a lot of the physical action in the dream sequence,
including (I suspect) the dancing, was reverse-filmed. The shots
of Cooper were normal.
You notice how sick and sad and old and deflated Cooper looked in the
dream sequence, as though they had given his face a layer of Bisquick
batter. That's ERASERHEAD stuff, boys and girls. And this sequence was
the most horrifically pure bit of Lynch "wrongness" I have seen since
EH. He seems to have a hotline to the essence of nightmare. There are
really two special Lynch "modes": one where you say "GACK! tee-hee! you
are a sick pup Mister," and one where you say in a VERY small voice,
"oh. oh no. stop that..."

I doubt that. This is a David Lynch story, not typical cheap TV. He's pretty
damn careful about details like that, plus there are some other clues to throw
suspicion on her, such as her reaction upon hearing of Laura's death at school.
And tonight's episode makes me suspect that she either did it, or saw who did
it, or has some other knowledge of Laura's death...

Where do you people come UP with these ideas?? Jeeeez... There always has to
be some complex, hidden meaning...
Considering that the town of Twin Peaks iis SURROUNDED by woods, and that
the boxcar where Laura may have been killed is located right next to them, I
don't see why it would refer to cocaine usage. THat is to oblique, and stretches
things too much.

Well, as we should all know now, the emphasis on "him" was because of what
Leo's wife had said about Leo killing her and Bobby if he ever found out they

THe two ledgers are there because C/katherine is getting the land-owner to do
some "creative mathmatics" with the ledger... in other words, making it look
like the sawmill is losing money. Apparently, Pete is allied with Josie

That's from the special ending made for the movie pilot which is going to be
distributed on video in Europe (and maybe in America, he said desperately). I
think the line is just more of Lynch's surrealism...

I carelessly left my VCR on the wrong channel last night. In the Dalai Lama rock throwing scene, whose name was called when the trash can was hit? I remember that when Johnny Horne's name was called, the crying detective got hit with the rock in the head. VERRRY SIGNIFICANT! There were a bunch of other "J"'s left out: Jacques the bartender, Julie the concierge, J... the singer. Some other things I noticed that I haven't seen posted: Cooper touched the sheriff's nose! Lucy was reading a book entitled "Tibet" when Albert showed up. Perhaps the red color of the after-life room in the dream scene with the dwarf and Laura is meaningful? The scene in the pilot where Bobby and Donna bury the half-heart has obvious symbolism no one posted: a symbol of burying Laura with the white stone as the tombstone! Perhaps the mother (Sarah) awoke screaming because her daughter was coming back (i.e. her cousin) symbolized by the gloved hand removing the heart from under the stone. I noted this quote from Laura's diary before: "Kitty got a new collar." Its just above the key "Day One". The Palmers don't have a cat, maybe Kitty = Catherine the sister-in-law?[src]

And I'd swear that the door handle to Cooper's hotel room was made
from deer antlers. I'm really starting to wonder if they're significant.
Wild speculation:
Antlers == Horns ----> Hornes ----> Ben and Jerry

OK, we all know the murderer can't be anyone too obvious (yet) or the series would be over too soon (and doesn't make as much money). People who are too obvious: Leo, Mike, the Shrink, and Ed's wife. People who don't seem like they would do it and are therefore mighty suspicious: Sherif Truman, his girlfriend (sorry about names- they slip my mind), Big Ed, Agent Cooper, Laura's best friend (ouch, I'm really sorry about the names). Sheriff Truman and his girlfriend are already implicated in some dirty doings that look tangential to the murder (who isn't). Possibly they already know who did it but they would have to reveal their own activities to prove it. Agent Cooper probably didn't have the opportunity. Clarification is desired. The speech was not simply played backwards. If you'll go back and listen again, you'll see (hear?) that you can still make out the words. If each word had just been played backwards it would sound like complete gibberish. It sounds like they took each word and randomly reversed segments here and there. Not too many though. They could have done this with a sampler or by doing the Beatles' Mr. Kite thing of cutting the tape and splicing it back together in funny ways. Everything looked jerky during the dream sequence. At first I thought this was just caused by the weird strobe lighting, but in retrospect I think they just cut (tiny) pieces out of the film here and there and spliced them back in. In other words, the splicing they did to change the audio also changed the video. (But since humans don't see as "quickly" as they hear, the effect is more subtle.) Episode 3 and Cooper's dream chris@bullwinkle.UUCP (Chris Andersen (The Dangerous Guy)) 1990-04-20 09:22
Now this has to have been the weirdest episode so far. What with Cooper's "method" for narrowing down the list of suspects and his rather revealing dream (the sequence which was his most "Eraserhead" like so far). For those who are interested, I played the dream sequence over several times and wrote it down: [ Open on Cooper sitting in a chair in a red curtained room. He looks over and sees someone with their back turned to him. He is wearing a red jacket he looks strangely distorted and is quivering. We hear a strange shuffling sound, plus someone crying out in muffled tones: "Laura! Laura!" ] [ Flash Through: several short, almost subliminal, scenes: Laura's mom descending a staircase Man (Bob) at the foot of the bed (from Laura's mom's visions) Murder scene (lots of blood) Laura's dead body ] [ Cut To: The one armed man (Mike) standing in a dark room (possibly the morgue?) ] Mike:Through the darkness of future past The magician longs to see One chance opts(?) between two worlds FIRE WALK WITH ME We lived among the people I think you say "Convenience Store" We lived above it I mean it like it is, and it sounds I too have been touched by the devilish one Tatooed on the left shouldier Oh, but when I saw the face of God. I was changed I took the entire arm off My name is Mike His name is Bob [ Cut To: "Bob" (man at foot of bed in previous vision) in another dark room (from all the pipes I'd guess a boiler room?) ] Bob:Mike! Mike! Can you hear me? Catch you with my death bag (I have no idea what this means) You may think I've gone insane But I promise, I will kill again [ Cut To: Circle of candles being blown out ] [ Cut Back To: red curtained room with Cooper in chair. Again we hear rubbing sound. He sees the man with his back turned to him again. He then looks over and sees Laura Palmer (or someone who looks like Laura Palmer) sitting in another chair, looking at him. The man turns around and we discover he is a dwarf (explains the weird distortion effect) (Personal note: I found the picture of the back of the man extremely uncomfortable to the eyes because he was wearing a red jacket that blended into the background, he was a dwarf (which made it look like the picture was distorted), and he was quivering (from rubbing his hands). Excellent use of visuals.) I believe the dwarf is listed in the credits as "The Man From Nowhere" The dwarf speaks in a strangely distorted speech that is some weird form of backward masking. However, some of the words sound like they are being played forward. As he speaks there are subtitles translating what he says. Also, the film of him seems to be playing backwards at some points] Dwarf:Let's Rock! [ He sits down and begins rubbing his hands again, but slowly this time. Cooper looks over at Laura(?) and she touches her finger to her nose. In the background we see the shadow of something pass across the curtain (a bird?) ] Dwarf:I've got good news. That gum you like is going to come back in style. [Looks at Laura] She's my cousin. [Looks at Cooper] But doesn't she look almost exactly like Laura Palmer? Cooper: [normal, non-distorted voice] But, it is Laura Palmer. [To Laura] Are you Laura Palmer? Laura: [distorted voice with subtitles, like dwarf] I feel like I know her, but sometimes my arms bend back. Dwarf:She's filled with secrets Where we're from, the birds sing a pretty song And there's always music in the air. [ dreamy jazz music starts and dwarf gets up and starts dancing around the room ] [ Laura gets up and walks over to Cooper, kisses him, and then whispers something in his ear. ] Cooper then wakes up and calls the Sherrif, telling him that he knows who killed Laura Palmer but that it can wait till morning. Fade out on him snapping his fingers to the beat of the dreamy jazz music in his dream. -- Chris Andersen (..!uunet!sequent!toontown!chris) "life is like arriving late for a movie, having to figure out what was going on without bothering everybody with a lot of questions, and then being unexpectedly called away before you find out how it ends."[src]

So which is it buddy? This show is complex, no doubt about it. It could all
be Lynch's idea of a big joke on the American public, but I doubt it and I
don't care anyway. The question doesn't have to be whether Lynch or anybody
else did it on purpose, but what the effect is on you (us). You don't want
to look for complex hidden meanings, you hit 'n'.

In other news, did anybody else find the effect used in the dream sequence
very interesting? I mean the way it was edited to be "jumpy", as if every
so often frames had been dropped. Also, the views of Agent Cooper's face
were strangely distorted; I couldn't tell if it was makeup or an electronic
effect. Unfortunately, as has been made clear by others, that's it for the
Lynch-directed episodes.

Norway? Nahhhh. 4) Notice the music inthe dream scene is the same as Audrey's favorite song. Also notice Cooper snaps his fingers to it when he wakes up implying that that was very key to his recognition. 5) The scene with Leland bawling over Laura's picture seemed more than just grief.I think there is an element of guilt. Episode 3 Questions CHRIS@NUACC.ACNS.NWU.EDU (Christopher Krohn) 1990-04-20 10:02
Just when I think I have things figured out, Lynch has to go and throw that dream sequence in! What a fantastic scene! But, there are a couple of things I just can't figure out. Anyone who has solid ideas as to the answers, please post. 1. Who is the dwarf supposed to be? He says that where he and the girl (maybe Laura maybe her cousin) come from, there is music playing all the time. Is this supposed to be some reference to a spritual world, or something more mundane like a bar or maybe a *bordello*? 2. Who was the dude with the beard that spoke to Cooper in the dream? He said something like that he had been touched by the evil one as well. What does that mean? 3. In the dream, the blonde guy who swore he would kill again I *think* is the same guy that Laura's mother had the hallucinations about. He would seem to be the murderer, but what is his relation to the one-armed man? 4. What was said about the one-armed man in the dream? I recall that he was mentioned, either by the guy with the beard or the blonde killer dude, but I don't remember the specifics, and I didn't tape the episode. Confused Again, Chris Krohn[src]

Body >is< face down, and being smart, Pete doesn't touch it. He might have not known who it was from his quick glance at her plastic covered back. 2. We don't hear all of the phone conversation. We hear Pete talk to Lucy, Lucy talk to Harry, and then Pete says, "She's dead! Wrapped in plastic!" Then (here's the important part you missed) we see Harry and he says to slow down, wait a minute. Pete says something we don't hear. Harry says "Where?" Pete says something else we don't hear. Harry says he'll be over and leaves. 3. I think Pete explained who he thought it was and then where it was. This makes Harry's actions totally normal. This brings up two more points: At the end of episode 1, Dr. J is listening to the tapes and we hear it just fine 'til he puts on his headphones. At the end of episode 2, we hear everything fine except whatever Laura whispered to Cooper, which apparently told him who the killer was. It's true that we get a different batch of information than the characters because of our broader view, but we don't always get >more< information. --- Allen BraunsdorfPurdue University Computing Center cc.purdue.edu!ahgUNIX Systems Programmer[src]

Re: The "backwards" speech & other effects adamk@media-lab.MEDIA.MIT.EDU (Adam Kao) 1990-04-20 10:58
One easy way to get that dream sequence effect would have been to have the entire scene (audio and video) filmed in reverse; that is the actors move backwards and say their lines backwards and the entire tape is then played backwards. However, there are details that lead me to believe that isn't the entire story. In particular, when the dwarf says "song" the word is quite clear. It's hard for me to imagine getting the "ng" phoneme to sound good when you're saying it backwards. I'll bet there was a whole lotta splicing going on. Obligatory whodunit theory: Laura willingly endured the wounds that lead to her death. She was involved with a Satanic cult (maybe Doc introduced her to it) that has half the town for members. The wounds and sex were part of an initiation rite. The rite accidentally went too far, during Leo's turn. People say Leo is too obvious as the killer, but I think Lynch is obviously capable of reverse psychology. In fact, I'm sure Lynch will have so much fun showing us the twisted means and motives leading up to the killing that it won't matter who the killer really is. Adam[src]

Someone else suggested Laura was involved with the prostitution at the One-Eyed Jack. So maybe when she wrote "kitty got a new collar" she was referring to her first day on the job. People Laura probably slept with: Ben and Jerry Horne, Bobby (football player boyfriend), Doc, Leo People Laura may have slept with unwillingly: The satanic murderer People Laura did not sleep with: James Maybe Laura's father had something to do with Laura getting involved in prostitution or satanism or both. Predictions: We will hear more from the Norwegians (too good a plot device to pass up). Agent Cooper will get romantically involved with Audrey Horne or Laura's cousin or both. Backwardx\s speech Robert.Berry@samba.acs.unc.edu (BBS Account) 1990-04-20 11:31
The weird speech in the dream was footage being played backwards. What they did was transcribe the lines phonetically, reverse them, and have the actors say their lines phonetically backwards. So if you'd been on the set you would have seen the actors carefully reading gibberish from cue cards. When you play it backwards, it comes out sounding like really weird English. I don't have any inside info or anything, but I've produced this effect myself before and recognize it.[src]

Did anyone else think that it was kinda weird that they would be called Ben and Jerry (ice cream, anyone?) or was it just me? I think that we've seen a new clue w.r.t. Ronette's involvement with the One Eyed Jack's scenes. Ben said that the new girl was "fresh from the perfume counter" or something like that. Can we then conclude that: a) Ronette used to be an employee of One Eyed Jack's at one time, b) the reason that they have a "new girl" is that the "old girl" was Ronette We know that Ronette was not exactly the shy type from the match magazine ad. It would make sense that she would be a typical employee of One Eyed Jack's. Also, to my eyes, the "new girl" seemed very nervous and uneasy. Could it be that she was forced into being an employee of One Eyed Jack's for drug money (hence a connection between Laura and Ronette)? Stretching things a bit further, in the scene between Donna and Audrey Horne, Audrey seemed to hedge a bit when Donna was surprised about any connection between her father and Laura. Could this involve One Eyed Jack's? My vote, after three episodes, goes to Ben Horne as the killer or as being involved in the murder. -- Carlo Sgro Not a card-carrying member of the watmath!watcgl!electro!carlo Laurie Bower Singers Fan Club.[src]

3rd episode and Blue Velvet awp92@campus.swarthmore.edu 1990-04-20 11:38
-Message-Text-Follows- Wow. Lynch just keeps giving us these wonderful thematic connections to worry over. In the beginning of the third episode, the weird brother comes back from Paris (I don't remember if he's Ben or Jerry), and he puts down this package wrapped in plastic wrap, a close-up of which links him to the body and the murder. But THEN, the first thing he says is "This is the best DAMN sandwich I've ever eaten" which immediately makes up think of Cooper and links him to the cops as well! Is it just me, or wasn't the girl in the dream the same person as the new girl at One-eyed Jack's (who also looks a lot like Laura Palmer)? And what the hell was going on with the dialogue in that dream????? Why slow down normal English and then give us subtitles? To whoever said that they saw Blue Velvet and were surprised at the happy ending: I suggest you see it again. The point was to show how phony happy endings are. The robin that they watch in the end of the film is obviously stuffed! And along those same lines, did anyone else feel that several of the establishing shots in last night's episode were intentionally flat and fake-looking? Weird. Note the flickering lights in the dream sequence, recalling the Log Lady flickering the lights at the town meeting, which in turn recalled the flickering fluorescent lights in the morgue. Seems like some kind of consistent evocation of death. What's going on with the music? I love it, but what's going on, y'know? After tonight's episode, I think it's quite possible that Leo is (at least one of) the murderer(s). It would be just like Lynch to shatter convention by making the obvious suspect the killer. Whodunit in 'Twin Peaks'? Only the Video can tell
-------------------------------------------------
New York Times News Service
Who killed Laura Palmer ? The
question is on the minds of many
viewers of 'Twin Peaks', the popular
TV murder mystery by David Lynch
and Mark Frost on ABC.
When the series ends its sched-
uled seven-week run, the killer of
the Twin Peaks' high school stu-
dent will remain unnamed.
The murderer's identity, it
seems, has been left to video.
A "closed-ended" tape version of
the two-hour first installment of
the series has been released by
Warner Home Video with a 15-min-
ute addendum by Messrs. Lynch
and Frost that solves the crime.
The problem is that the video is
available only in Europe. Warner is
not saying when, if ever, 'Twin
Peaks' the video will be released in
this country.
* * *
I, for one, am sincerely hoping that the 'unsolved after 7 episodes'
part of this news story is mistaken. I just don't see Lynch/Frost
doing something like that to us poor American viewers.
Anyone else heard anything about this ?

Miscellaneous Thoughts mctst@unix.cis.pitt.edu (Mary Tabasko) 1990-04-20 12:30
Howdy to all you "Twin Peaks" fans! What a terrific show this is (even if I loose "Wiseguy", I'll still have something to watch on TV!)! Last night, my housemate and I drank coffee (black as midnight on a moonless night) and ate some -- excuse me -- DAMN good homemade cherry pie while watching. It sort of helps set the mood.... Anyway, I have a few questions/observations dealing with the show: 1> Who was the guy in the woods with Leo in the third broadcast? When Bobby and Mike went to the tree stump in the woods where they were supposed to trade Leo $$ for coke, there was someone standing back in the shadows. When Bobby and Mike asked Leo about him, he basically ignored their question. Could this person be the mysterious hand we saw at the end of the 2-hr broadcast, who dug the buried necklace up? Perhaps he/she gave it to Dr. Jacoby (if it's the same one?). Maybe this is the person Laura's mother "saw" in her vision when Donna came over after Laura was murdered? (Although I thought he looked like Leo with his hair unbound.) Maybe the same as the bearded man in the dream sequence who quoted "Fire/Walk With Me" and other spooky stuff? Anyway, it struck me as another significant loose thread. 2> A couple of people have asked what Cooper said to the sheriff when they were examining the bloody rag. As I recall (I haven't checked my tape), he said something like "This is a nasty piece of work." I didn't attach any deep significance to this, though. Did I miss something? 3> In article <009357CD.4DE175C0@binah.cc.brandeis.edu> wall@binah.cc.brandeis.edu (Matthew Wall) writes: > >I, like some others posting to this list, am having a difficult time keeping > >track of the characters from episode to episode. Someone posted a thought relating the note found in the box car "Fire/Walk With Me" to a "hymn" remembered as sung by Eddie the Shipboard Computer in "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy". The song Eddie sang was "You'll Never Walk Alone," written by (I think) Rodgers & Hammerstein. I don't think it's officially a "hymn", but it is, IMHO, inspirationally maudlin enough to be so considered. The line the poster misquoted should have been "When you walk through a storm, hold your chin up high, and don't be afraid of the dark..." <gag>, not "though the fire". 5> I wonder if any other those Tibetan deduction techniques would help me find a topic for my dissertation? Just wonderin'. I think that's enough for one posting. Donuts and Joe for everyone! Mary Tabasko[src]

the film. I've done this myself on audiotape a few times . . . all you
have to do is reverse the phonemes:
"Let's Rock" -- ull eh t' ss rr aa k'
If you pronounce "k'aarr sst'ehull" (or somesuch) and reverse on
playback you'll get a close facimilie to the real thing. It takes a
little practice to make it sound recognizable but it's possible. There
was a guest on REAL PEOPLE ten or so years ago who could do it
on-the-fly.
> > Everything looked jerky during the dream sequence.
Before you saw his face, the dwarf seemed to be vibrating. Everything
else looked normal to me, just reversed.
> > Did anyone think that Cooper looked like a wax figure in that scene,

He looked older.

Finger Snapping scotth@newsigi.Colorado.EDU (Scott Henninger) 1990-04-20 12:52
I haven't seen it mentioned yet, but Cooper was snapping his fingers after he declared he knew who the killer was. I am often distracted while watching the show (a 1-year old daughter), but who was the guy playing the record that caused Laura's mother to freak out? Wasn't he snapping his fingers too? Wasn't the music in the two scenes (dream and record player) similar? -- Scott scotth@boulder.colorado.edu[src]

My impression was more "Fire, walk with me." That is, the word "fire"
referred to a {person, entity, thing} rather than being an exclamation.
And it sounded really familar...

Scott Frost (Mark's brother) told me that by the end of the 7th episode it would be pretty clear who the murderer is. His wording suggested that they won't positively identify the murderer, as they would at the end of a standard whodunnit, but we'll know. I'd bet the killer will remain unapprehended in order to provide a beginning for next season's continuation. At present they have no commitment from the network for following on next season, but this series is such a winner already that it would be unthinkable for them to drop it. ---------------- Paul Raveling Raveling@isi.edu[src]

My theory for the "backwards" speech is the actors spoke their lines backwards pronouncing the sound of each word backwards. Then when editing, they reversed it. You got the sound of backwards speech but could understand what they said. just a theory, John C.[src]

Here are the developemnts to date in the "Twin Peaks" case. I have
placed them in relational database format, as usual. I would have done
more, but Albert has been a pain. You know how that is. Mail me a
cassette with your comments, and I will include them in my next update.
Sorry about the typos.... How was the coffee at the Great Northern?

If Audrey's quote was about Laura's sexual relationship with Ben, then I believe that it would be from Audrey's evesdropping on the two of them while Laura was over tutoring the brother. Maxwell A.
