Why are so many posting assuming that Audrey is the queen? Was there
something I missed in a trailer? It seemed to me to be a tossup between
Donna, Audrey, and Shelley.

OTOH, Donna is essentially too unimportant for her death to have the
impact we;ve come to expect, and Shelley would be much more use to Whydym
Irrl [:-)] alive than dead -- he would have such sadistic fun having both
her and Leo under his control...

It is happening again. It is happening again. It is happening again.

I assume that the sudden change from full moon to last quarter
indicates that a week has passed between episodes (darn confusing when
you're watching them back-to-back on the VCR :-)

Then again, maybe it's just because Lynch's astronomy is not great..

....I can't believe it.

How can they just pull the show like this, with so many unresolved
storylines?? I was sitting in my saturday-morning-coffeeshop-reverie
with a pile of local papers and the NY Times, ready to absorb war news,
and read the (front page--this is a small town) blurb about TP being cancelled
abruptly.

Wars and misery notwithstanding-- I FEEL SO HELPLESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What do we *do*? Where do I write? When do we march?

No kidding.....this show has been important to me. I don't *want* to
reappear.

TP on the verge of cancellation Michael_D_Marchionna@cup.portal.com 1991-02-16 10:03
Sorry to bring bad news but, I found this article in todays front page
section of the San Jose Mercury News.

TWIN PEAKS MAY SIP LAST JAVA

LOS ANGELES (AP) - "Twin Peaks" will be pulled from the ABC schedule after
tonight's broadcast in what could be the first move toward cancellation of the
bizzare television serial.

ABC said Friday that the "Twin Peaks" ratings were a disappointment but
that the show would return in a different time later this season.

Last week, "Twin Peaks" finished in 85th place out of 89 TV shows ranked by
the A.C. Nielson system.

"We have no idea when we will be on next," said a spokesman for the
producers of the show. Traditionally, when a show is placed on indefinite
hiatus, it is doomed.

Michael Saltzman, a spokesman for "Twin Peaks" producers David Lynch and
Mark Frost, said ABC ordered 22 episodes of the one-hour drama for the 1990-
'91 TV season. The 16th episode is set for broadcast at 10 tonight (Chs. 7,
11, 13).

Oh well I guess I won't have to stock up on any more blank tapes any time
soon. But, seriously I think its time to start that letter writing campain
now. Could the person who posted the address of ABC please repost so I can
properly address my letter bomb.

2/9: Hungarian Goulash George.Harris@samba.acs.unc.edu (George Harris) 1991-02-16 10:55
With regard to the language that Eckhart's assistant was speaking,
I cast my vote for Hungarian (a non-Indo-European language, by the way [yes,
I know that's irrelevant {or is it?}]), & I'm going to tell you why. In the
scene prior to this one, when Pete & Coop are discussing this & that behind
the swinging wooden door, Pete mentions that the girl @ the laundromat is
apparently Hungarian & doesn't speak a word of English. Posit: Eckhart
& Co. sent that coat back with Pete to set up Josie to take the fall. Possible
holes in this theory: I think Pete mentioned the name of the Laundromat
girl, who is a TP native, & Eckhart would have to know that the FBI has fibers
from the coat as evidence in the shooting. Still, it's a nice idea.

On the subject of Hungarian being non-indo-european, this would account
for those familiar with slavic or germanic or whatever languages not being
able to recognize it. I believe the only language that bears even a faint
similarity to Hungarian is Finnish. Enough trivia.

It wasn't Russian. Whether it was intended to be, however, is another story.
Which brings up the point: they could have been talking babytalk. In which case
the question is pretty moot. I doubt that the TP folks would have actually
hired a language coach for a couple of lines. So unless they did and the actors
managed to pronounce things the way they're meant to be pronounced (which is
seldom the case), guessing "Hungarian" has the same probability of being
correct as guessing "Farsi".

If cancelled, can we strike a deal? v053qgzj@ubvmsb.cc.buffalo.edu (David M Snyderman) 1991-02-16 13:41
Given the extent of TP video tape proliferation (illegal, but there)...
Given the fact that classic TV shows, like Star Trek, turn up on tape
eventually...

Can we ask that, when TP is officially released, it include the six episodes
if they don't air them? Furthermore, if TP is cancelled at this mid-point,
is a boycott of ABC possible (they don't have that much else that's good,
anyways. I'm sorry if I've offended the Doogie fans out there, but its
true.)?

Twin Peaks Cancellation skip@brahms.udel.edu (Allen P Haughay Jr) 1991-02-16 14:00
The dropping of ratings is no surprise, nor the final cancellation of
Twin Peaks. ABC buried the damned show in a 10:00 PM timeslot on Saturday
night, perhaps ignoring the very demographic to which the show appealed.
The 18-35 yr. old yuppie-esque crowd to which the show has its appeal is
probably NOT even home on a Saturday night. David Lynch was quoted as
saying that Twin Peaks fans are party fiends, and that's what they are
doing Saturdays...he said moving Twin Peaks to this timeslot just freed
up a weeknight for the party hearty people to whom the show would appeal.
Yeah, whatever. He's right, though. To top it all off, ABC was always
pre-empting it, moving it from 10:00 PM to 9:00 PM, not putting it on
for a week. Really a stupid thing to do when you want to keep regular
viewers.

Television just became a bit duller again.

Yes, and didn't you just get the faintest hint that Albert was

 way. Truly touching.

I have to admit the last scene boggled my mind. If this is truly
the last episode of Twin Peaks ever to air, I think that this scene does
in some way represent the best and most daring of the approach for which
TP is now justly famous (if not appreciated). The White Light thing
happened again, our Special Gifted Agent sees the destruction of Josie
and the ever-corrupting influence of BOB, Truman being helpless to stop
any of it. The inexplicable dancing dwarf returns-- a code for the
final inexplicability of Twin Peaks. Josie in the drawer knob? Can't
figure it out, but it sure was creepy, and typical of the original
 visuals of the series.

If this was the last shot, I'm glad it looked like this. (Did
anyone notice that in this episode they reproduced almost exactly the
original opening shot of the show, i.e. the back of Josie's head
as she is putting on her makeup?)

I mean, if TP has to go out, it HAS to go out on a dream sequence!

Adieu, TP. Nous avons les ames solitaires.

First of all, I just watched the last *sniff* show
tonight, and I thought I'd bring up a connection I
made..

I was incredibly frustrated by the ending of the episode,
especially the Videodrome-like Josie-face in the dresser
drawer knob. Did BOB put her spirit inside the wood?
Does this mean the woods are haunted with the spirits
of his victims? Does the Log Lady's log contain one
of these spirits? Does this explain the preponderance
of wood and tree imagery and furniture in TP as a whole?
Can you tell I'm a film major?

you do the same, if you are a student, since we're

Twin Peaks on Hiatus 2/16 last show rguion@mips.COM (Richard Guion) 1991-02-16 21:23
The San Francisco ABC affiliate, Channel 7, announced that
ABC will be pulling Twin Peaks off the air after tonight's
(02/16/91) episode. They said it was unknown whether or not
TP would return. The only justification given was that TP
was 85th or 86th in the ratings, at the very bottom.

I want to encourage others to write to ABC if they wish to
bring TP back on a regular basis, at least to finish showing
this season's episodes and to conclude the storyline.

I picked up the address of ABC and Bob Iger (ABC president)

Re: Twin Peaks Cancellation f3w@mentor.cc.purdue.edu (Mark Gellis) 1991-02-16 22:07
In addition to writing to ABC (hey, it worked with Star Trek, for one
year, at least), it might be help to write to OTHER networks, like Fox or
one of the cable networks; they might be interested in the extra ratings
they could get by picking up a cult show like TP, and the show might
actually be improved by getting it out of the clutches of the Big
Three, whose executives are clearly among the great moral cowards of
the Western World.

By the way, when writing to ABC, it may be helpful to avoid cursing
them out, that only makes you sound like a fanatic. What you want to
do is be polite, and firm, and let them know how enormously disappointed
you are with the network for their decision, and that Twin Peaks was
really your only reason to watch anything on ABC, and so on. It might
also help to point out how the show actually makes the network look
good, since it does show that they're willing to take a chance on an
unusual show because it's well done and interesting and offers some
quality entertainment. I have a feeling a letter campaign like this
might actually do some good. Telling them you're angry is one thing,
getting them to understand that there's something in it for them if
they keep Twin Peaks on the air, however, might get them to do just
that, and that is, after all, what we want.

1987: After a moderately successful opening run, Max Headroom is moved
to Friday night against Dallas and Miami Vice and also dies after
       5 episodes...

1991, Feb 16: Is anyone really surprised?

I liked all of the aforementioned shows. In fact, most of the shows I've
liked on the networks have come from ABC. They have also canned them merci-
lessly. Why do they bother?
I ought to add that both Max Headroom and The Greatest American Hero
had unaired episodes when they were canned, and both returned briefly when
ABC was desperate. Oddly enough, both were put against Magnum PI when
they did, which was another show killer like Dallas.

I think ABC has some very creative people on its programming staff, but
whoever or whatever is in charge of scheduling is an UTTER MORON...

Oh well, they didn't bring Starman back (not that I liked it), and it had
a relatively huge following so be sure to be really rude when you write to ABC
so you at least manage to offend someone... :-)

Here's a possible sample letter....

Last (?) Episode of TP: 2/16 bvickers@bonnie.ics.uci.edu (Brett J. Vickers) 1991-02-16 23:48
This episode was EXCELLENT. The best episode yet since Leland's death.

Some of the highlights:

o Ben deciding he'd run for Senate. Man, he'd make a great
  politician!

o Norma finally telling Hank off. (Geez, I was wondering if
she'd ever see through Hank's "I'll shape up" speeches).

o Josie fainting at the sight of Andrew. I loved it.

o The departure of James (YAY!). I can live with Donna, but
James had to go. Too bad we won't get to see more episodes
  without him.

o The shot of Josie in front of her mirror, painting her lips --
the exact same shot that the whole series opened with. It was
almost like coming full circle, connecting the last episode with
  the first. Truly stunning.

o The final scenes. Josie dying mysteriously (heart attack?),
BOB's return. The LMFAP. Josie in the nightstand knob. Sort of
reminds me of the Log Lady and her log. Did anyone else get the
impression that this whole sequence was added after hearing the
  suspension/cancellation news?

I'll really be mad if they truly end it here. I want to at LEAST see the
rest of the season. Remember, write Bob Iger NOW:

Who will be Queen... sally@eris.berkeley.edu (S. A. Wilson) 1991-02-16 23:48
I take it that the riddle is intended to see who amongst
the three "angels" has the qualities to be WE's Queen.
Whoever is intelligent and resourceful enough to
interruput the riddle is the prefect intellictual
match for WE. So I can say that we can count Donna
out, afterall she liked James not much subtance there 8-).
Then Shelley she really does not seem forceful enough.
That leaves Audrey who appears to be very capable.
But alas and alack all this is mute....sigh.

You know what would be even more horrific:

The BBC is currently showing Twin Peaks and are around 2006 or something.
What if they were to pass us up? :-)

I don't really think this will happen, but just the thought of it is scary.

This was MY least favorite episode of the entire series right up until
the last few minutes.

BOB is 'alive' and well apparently. And the man from another place made
another appearence. All sorts of possibilities present themselves.

I feel that pegging Josie as the one who shot Cooper was lame. Perhaps
they'll be able to do a better job of working this out in the future.

Speaking of the future, I suspect that we haven't heard the last of
Laura Palmer. Why else are they still showing her picture with the
credits? Also, if Josie can be sucked into a knob...

To be honoust, I didn't like most of this episode. It was shaping up
to be MY least favorite of the entire series. Then, they hit me with
the last two minutes. Just when I was wondering if there would be
anything at all that I liked.

Major wierd. BOB is 'alive' and well apparently. The man from another
place is again involved... All sorts of possibilities present themselves.

I really felt that peging Josie as the person who shot cooper was lame.
Perhaps they'll be able to do a better job of working this out in the future.

Speaking of the future. We haven't heard the last of Laura Palmer.
Her battle with BOB will not be over until BOB has ceased to be.

OK, so maybe that sounds a bit wild. But they still show her picture at
the end of the show, and I've come to the conclusion that very little
happens without intent.

As Windom Earle said to Coop on the tape he left on Coop's bed under the mask,
"Print your move in tomorrow's paper, or I'll make the move for you." (not an
exact quote)

I can empathize with the spot Coop is in. If he doesn't make a move, WE will
make it for him. The latter would, of course, lead to disastrous results that
Coop wants to avoid.

And I find it relatively humorous that Pete, of all people, is a chess expert.

2/16 Questions fen@toyshop.lonestar.org (Gervase Fen) 1991-02-17 06:40
In spite of the possible cancellation of TP, I shall pose these questions
to the general fanatic public, hoping to gain some insight for myself.

1) When are they going to bring Major Briggs in "from the woods"? I don't
like that they've left that plot line hanging. Now, since I missed
most of the first season, (I'm planning ot correct this next weekend
when ABC won't be showing our show) I missed quite a bit of the Briggs
subplot. What's the deal with the Owls and the "message from outer
space," and all that? Could someone generate a brief summary and email
it, or give me an address for a location that has plot summaries online
    (ftp sites will be fine)?

2) Again, due to my oblivion during the first season, I have no concept as
to how much of an evil little person Josey is/was (questions about
that, too, in a minute). It seems to me that Harry was a little stupid
about the whole thing, or MASSIVELY in love with this traitor (or
"bitch" as Albert termed her (amen for progressive tv!!)). His
expressions at the final confrontation with Coop and Josey were
*wonderful*. Well played. A man who has had enough, but still doesn't
want his little angel to get hurt. What an actor!

3) Reiterating Bob's question (and I played it back several times to make
sure I heard it properly), "What happened to Josey?" As I understand
it, and as seems to be the general consensus on the group, Bob is not
incarnate in anyone at this point. How has he managed to remove Josey
from the realm of reality and put her in his own private hell? I'm
convinced that he did "steal" Josey from the world of Twin Peaks. As
she collapses on the bed, you can hear Bob laughing in the background.
At first I thought it was the wind or something, not knowing what to
expect (should we ever know what to expect from this show?), but after
Bob made his appearance, I played it back, and sure enough, it's Bob
back there. Yow! What is the significance of his appearance to Coop?
Is he now playing with Coop the way WE is, too? What significance did
the dwarf have, returning to dance on the bed where Josey killed TE? I
had heard theories that the dwarf represented Leland in Coop's dream,
but this new vision seems to blow that theory out of the water (Leland
is still dead, as I recall). And why did I seem to feel that the
entire segment was incomplete because we didn't see the Giant? Will he
    be returning?

4) Is Coop going to tell Harry about his vision of Bob and the dwarf?
    Hmmmmm.....

And now, the most important question currently:

WHAT IS ABC's MAILING ADDRESS?? It's time to start a letter-writing
campaign to keep this wonderful show on the air. Letter campaigns have
worked in the past. Obviously, ABC needs to know that there are a
large number of us regular followers who watch the show religiously.
It may not show in the Nielsens, but we ALL know how large a following
there is. This group helps to prove that point. The lack of
"previews" is disheartening, to say the least. Guaranteed, though,
that when the next episode IS run, I will be watching or taping it.
But a mass of mail from a group such as this one would be enough in
their program directors' eyes to keep the show alive. So grab a pencil
and paper, or hell! even print out a letter, but get it in to ABC mui
pronto. We need to act FAST if our livelihoods are to be maintained!

Actually, the stuff they use in construction work is quite thick, and since it
is probably stapled to 2x4's, 18 inches part, if you took a run at it, you'd
probably bounce back across the room. I don't recall, but I think Leo barged

Of doorknobs and logs... broehl@watserv1.waterloo.edu (Bernie Roehl) 1991-02-17 09:29
A neat episode!

I wonder if Truman will start carrying around a nighttable knob? He could
double-date with the Log Lady!

Seriously, I suspect that what happened to Josie is what happened to Margaret's
late husband. In each case their spirit fled their body to avoid imminent death
and took up residence in the nearest wooden object. (Actually, "fled" may not
be correct -- their spirits were apparently shifted to those objects by some
outside force).

On a different note... I'm still in shock at the cancellation news. I'm hoping
that Global will continue showing the remaining 6 episodes, even if ABC doesn't;
if this proves to be the case, I'll gladly post synopses for our friends
south of the border (no, not the Mexicans; I'm posting from Canada).

In any case, I suspect Lynch/Frost will release the entire series (including
the missing 6 episodes) on video.  They'll probably make more money that way;
it worked for Madonna :-)

Now *there's* an interesting idea... a television series made specifically
for home video. Anyone know if this has been done, or what the economics
would be? One two-hour episode per month would be about right.

I called up the 1-800 subscription number about six weeks ago, and was
greeted by a rather bored operator named "Tiffany". "You-will-get-your-first-

I did, yes. I was saying through most of the show, "you know, I'm not sure
if this show was deliberately crafted to be last or not--it doesn't look like
they knew." Then they hit the last five minutes--"okay, fine, so they knew."

Something else which I absolutely adored--Andrew's conversation with Eckhardt.
I've been waiting ages for Dan O'Herlihy and David Warner to play off each
other--"Look at me. I'm ALIVE!"

And a quote which in some ways truly sums up Twin Peaks: "You'll have to

HEEES BAAAACK... ekushnir@math.lsa.umich.edu (Eugene Kushnirsky) 1991-02-17 15:07
I thought this was an extremely uneven episode. The lowlights:

 1) Some painfully wooden acting, especially from James Marshall and Peggy
Lipton (that scene in the diner, where you could practically see the
cue card from which she was reading her lines).

 2) Good-oldfashioned police brutality from Hawk--this was just offensive.

 3) The obvious romantic subplot between Audrey and Ben's friend looks to be
as boring as the James/Donna story.

The highlights:

 1) Albert is still in Twin Peaks.

 2) I was right about Josie.

 3) Great ending that redeemed everything that came before.

However:

 1) The deaths of two pivotal characters promise to leave many unanswered
questions, not the least of which is why Josie shot Coop (her explanation
    was idiotic).

 2) More distressing is the fact that the show is on hiatus (presumably in the
same sense that Calvin Coolidge is on hiatus) as witnessed by the lack of
    promo for next week. Sigh.

Alright...Audry is not necessarily WE's queen. We know this from the last
episode. However, the week before, WE only delivered his letter to Audry
and not any of the other girls. It's quite obvious now that we won't know
who the queen is until we figure out the poem. Then again, the way things
are going at ABC, we may never know.

Everyone reading, please write in to ABC to support _Twin Peaks_, at least
to finish the season. I think the show would do much better on a weeknight
rather than Saturday night.

Notes to Letter Writers tneff@bfmny0.BFM.COM (Tom Neff) 1991-02-17 19:54
It's great that we're all writing to ABC, but let me make a couple of
suggestions.

 * DON'T do some kind of form letter!! Whoever uploaded his letter (in
TeX, yet -- why not a bitmap?? :-( ) with the recommendation to "copy
the text in the middle into your own letter" or words to that effect,
was doing a disservice. USE YOUR OWN WORDS -- tell them what you really
think. They know how to tell the difference, and it will MAKE a
difference.

 * DON'T use any kind of electronic delivery service, however tempting
that seems. Type or laser-print the letter yourself, stamp it and mail
it. Networks get computerized crap all the time, and they throw it out.

 * DON'T THREATEN THEM, you idiots!! Don't take the name FOX in vain.
Fox doesn't want it anyway, and ABC wouldn't let them have it if they
did. Ratings that embarrass ABC look good on Fox, and that's bad.
And don't threaten to boycott ABC.  These people care about their jobs;
don't tempt them to tell you to go **** yourself.

 * KEEP IT SHORT and to the point. Say exactly what you mean, in as few
words as possible. Try to imagine some overworked ABC secretary opening
your letter and reading it. What would it take to make him or her put
it in the very short "show Bob's assistant" stack? Three pages of
hysterical dot-matrix ravings ain't the answer.

 * Say who you are and what you do, in one sentence. They are genuinely
interested in the demographics of people who care enough to write. It's
something their tracking surveys and focus groups can't measure.

 * MENTION YOU TAPE THE SHOW AND WATCH IT LATER if you do! Nielsen
can't handle this phenomenon properly. Nobody tapes DOOGIE HOWSER.

 * ASK FOR A WEEKNIGHT SLOT (unless you disagree for some reason).
Saturday night killed STAR TREK and it's trying to kill TWIN PEAKS.
Things could only improve on a weeknight.

I don't think Josie did it. I'm sorry-- but I just don't buy it. Especially
since we saw no negative reaction from Josie towards Our Hero until this
episode.

Weren't we told (in the original "Dream Sequence") that the Dancing Dwarf has
a direct connection to Bob?

Is the real Killer BOB president of ABC? How can we get word to Coop who his
*real* enemy is?

Has anyone thought of sending the compiled comments on 1/26 to Lynch et al?
I'd bet that they'd be interested in seeing the creativity...
Better yet, how about sending them to ABC? I think that that would show the
MGS in charge of the network just what kind of a following that TP has--
especially the comments from poor befuddled persons begging for tape copies
of a non-existent episode.

I'm about to right my letter to ABC... Have you yet?

You must have a funny definition of "always". By my records, it was
pre-empted a total of twice -- that means two times -- on the 24th of
November and on the 26th of January. The three week period between the
15 Dec episode and the 12 Jan episode is par for television. Just about
*every* show gets interrupted during the holidays, it's just that it's
not quite so visible with other shows because they broadcast re-runs.
Given the serial nature of TWIN PEAKS, it isn't easy to just drop in a
random re-run.

In the 20 weeks since the beginning of the second season, we've seen
16 different episodes of TWIN PEAKS. That's probably a little higher
than average for a network show.

Is there any chance that local stations might be able
to broadcast TP even if ABC doesn't? For example, I imagine that
in Boston, TP might have somewhat higher ratings than it does else-
where. Might our local affiliate be willing to broadcast the remaining
episodes?
Also, wasn't it sleazy of ABC to release the "hiatus" info

Nitrous oxide is N2O, not NO2, which is an acid anhydride and will form
nitrous acid when it contacts water, thus causing a person inhaling it to
drown in their own fluids. The prognosis for nitrous oxide is not much
better, since outside the clinical setting it is used without oxygen and
has caused death by asphyxiation in numerous cases. Also, it is really
cold when is changes from liquid to gas phase, and numerous people have
either died or have suffer serious injuries by freezing the tissue in
their trachea or lungs. As Hunter S. Thompson said, "there is no room in
the drug culture for amateurs." If you are going to abuse drugs, be sure
to do it in an informed way so you will live to make it to a treatment
center.

N2O has a molecular weight of 44, much denser than the approximate 29
molecular weight of room air, hence causing a voice to go deeper the way
helium makes it go higher.

Prolonged use of N2O in post-op cardiac patients as an analgesic for 24
hrs was found to significantly depress the immune system by interfering
with protein synthesis.

As for what Dennis Hopper used, many of us are without a clue, but God was
it frightening. PS, if it were N2O, the way he used it would have killed
him since he took it straight without oxygen.

I myself was too confused by the movie to be depressed. I saw it years
ago in my first years of university when I was not
accustomed to thinking in terms of religious imagery (not like nowadays,
when that is practically all I care about in a movie) and so I had quite
a problem understanding it. But I think that the hero did succeed in
sheltering a family of good and innocent people (a holy family of man,
woman and child) by stalling off death until the family escaped.

Perhaps Coop will stall off death in order to save innocents.
Hopefully he won't sacrifice himself in order to save Lucy, Dick and baby.

Future of TP/Letters to ABC asnyder@artorg.hmc.psu.edu (Alan J. Snyder) 1991-02-18 10:34
The following might be made clear to ABC when writing...

1) Regardless of ratings, you have shown lack of commitment to your viewers by denying the opportunity for resolution of plot lines.

2) To prevent future disappointment, we will avoid ABC programming in the future. Of course, if you have the integrity to allow the series to finish (assuming it _must_ go), we will feel comfortable watching your programming.

3) We will rent movies on Saturday nights (i.e., we won't watch TP's replacement).

4) If future episodes are released on tape and ABC has any financial interest, we will watch them in groups as large as possible in order to minimize ABC's profit.

Could be. When the soap opera "The Edge Of Night" ended a few (?) years
ago, the final few minutes were pretty odd. As I remember, someone noticed
a criminal that everyone had thought left town walking down a street called
Wonderland Lane. When she went to the police, everyone looked at her like
she was crazy, because there was NO Wonderland Lane in town! So she led
the police back to the scene, only to find that the whole street had
vanished. Sitting there on the sidewalk was a little white rabbit... Now
you KNOW that they wouldn't have put an impossible scene like that in if it
hadn't been the very end of the series.

Of course, in Twin Peaks, impossible things happen all the time. Actually
I think that BOB was planned all along (why else would Josie shoot
Cooper?), but I have no idea why the LMFAP was there. Why would he show up
immediately after BOB?Why didn't he even say anything? And the shot of
Josie's face in the knob was pretty strange even for Twin Peaks.

I'm really upset that we won't find out what the White Lodge scenario was
all about. It would be nice to have some confirmation or denial of the ET
hypothesis. Maybe the show was pulled because it was getting too close to
the truth?

(That was a joke. Taking it seriously would be hazardous to your health.)

In Bergman's Seventh Seal the chess board was *always* set up wrong.
I have this thing about magazine ads and movies using chess boards
and not doing it correctly.
You'd think that if they were going to do it, they would do it right!

2/16 Synopsis nolty@kastor.caltech.edu (Bob Nolty) 1991-02-18 11:56
(morning)
1. Camera roams around owl knick-knacks, chess board, mask,
HST and AC as they listen to Windom Earl tape. COOPER: "If Wyndom
wanted to kill me I'd be dead." WE insists on Cooper's next move.
Harry asks Lucy to call paper (to place personal ad) and Pete. LUCY:
"Paper and Pete. Right, I'll do it in alphabetical order." 2. Pete
cooks breakfast for Catherine and Andrew. Josie walks in, sees Andrew
and faints. 3. Hank (on crutches) and Hawk in Harry's office. HST
accuses Hank of shooting Leo. Hank says he was home with Norma then,
and offers to deal info on Packard's death for freedom. No deal.
Hawk kicks Hank's crutch causing Hank to fall on his broken leg. TP
-- home of civil liberties. 4. Albert says same gun shot Agent Cooper
and Asian Man. 5. Audrey working as concierge at GN. Some hunk walks
in; he claims to have seen Audrey years ago playing Heidi. Audrey has
mail -- a note containing a torn piece of paper with writing, and a
note inviting her to "save the one you love" by attending "a gathering
of angels" at the road house that night.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
6. Nadine confesses to Ed her love for Mike. NADINE: "It's time to
call a spade a spade, Eddie: we're breaking up." 7. Cooper interviews
Josie at the Packard/Martell house. Catherine listens in. COOPER: "I
don't know what place Harry occupies in your heart, but I do know that
you own his." Josie is unresponsive. After AC leaves, Catherine
badgers Josie while oozing slime. Catherine says Josie will have to
see Eckhardt alone that night. JOSIE: "He'll kill me." Cathering
casually exposes a gun in the book case which Josie grabs and fondles.
8. Bobby, Ben, Jerry, Audrey and the hunk (old friend of Ben's, John
Justice Wheeler aka Jack) plot business. Ben reveals there is an
endangered species on the mill/Ghostwood property: the pine weasel.
JERRY: "They're incredible roasted." Ben will use this fact to stop
development until he is in the driver's seat. BEN: "And then, I'm
considering a run for the Senate." 9. WE exits diner, leaving a note
for Shelly. Norma is on phone with her sister (Andie), a nun who is
coming to visit. Shelly reads note, identical to Audrey's. Ed comes
in and proposes to Norma.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
10. Leo and Windom. I missed the point. Leo whittles. 11. Norma
visits Hank in jail, asks for divorce. Hank promises to reform and
asks for Leo alibi. Norma refuses, although Hank swears he'll die if
he goes back to prison. HANK: "You're his whore." NORMA: "I'd rather
be his whore than your wife." 12. Sheriff's office -- Pete selects a
move that will give WE "sleepless nights" and not allow WE to capture
any pieces for 4-5 moves. 13. Albert says powder on Josie's glove
proves she shot Cooper. ALBERT: "Bust this bitch." Cooper gives
Truman time. 14. Andrew visits Josie in her room. Says he loved her
though she didn't love him. Says she should go to Eckhardt who can
get her out of the country. 15. James and Donna meet for a picnic in
the mountains. James is going to continue traveling around. Donna
will return to TP. They will continue to love each other and meet
again some day.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
(early evening) 16. HST appears at Packard/Martell place looking for
Josie. Catherine says she is with Eckhardt at GN. Harry rushes out.
17. Eckhardt in elevator at GN; Packard is there. AP stops elevator
and talks to TE (who is surprised to see him.) AP says he is alive
because Josie betrayed TE. Something about Josie in love with HST.
ECKHARDT: "I've already taken care of him." 18. Ben, Audrey and Jack
at supper. Jack is in business of saving troubled businesses with
environmental problems (I didn't quite catch it).  Ben is called away;
attraction/repulsion/defensiveness between Audrey and Jack ensues.
19. Shelly, Audrey and Donna meet at the road house. They put three
pieces of paper together to get a poem that didn't mean much to me.
WE watches from the bar. 20. Cooper practices fly fishing in his
room. I forget what happened -- he hears something? Grabs his gun
and goes to investigate. Hears a shot and opens Eckhardt's room.
Eckhardt stands up and dies. Josie and Cooper point guns at each
other. Josie confesses to shooting Cooper before. Harry enters,
points gun at Josie and yells at her. She points gun at self, then
faints. Harry holds her and declares she is dead. WHITE LIGHT WHITE
LIGHT WHITE LIGHT we are in the Cooper zone. He looks at bed, where
Harry and Josie were, it's now empty. Then a hand comes from behind
the bed, then another, then BOB pokes up his ugly head and laughs.
BOB: "What happened to Josie?" Cooper looks again, BOB is gone but
the dwarf is dancing on the bed. Cooper looks again and it is Harry
and Josie. Then the camera moves to a bedstand, and zooms in on a
1-inch wide drawer knob until it almost fills the screen. Josie's
face appears on the knob, sad. Then weird face-trying-to-escape-from-
latex shots.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------------------------
MHO: If there had to be a last episode, this was a pretty good one.
It resolved more problems than it created, although we certainly
wouldn't _ever_ want everything resolved.

Favorite shots: (1) Albert and Cooper in foreground in hallway at
sheriff's office as Albert says "Bust this bitch", then a shift focus
as Harry walks out of conference room into the picture in the
background, Harry looking at them and looking pitiful. (2) Packard
and Eckhardt, in the side-by-side facing-front elevator arrangement,
carrying on conversation. (3) At the road house, a shot down the bar
with the angels in focus in the foreground, and the unmistakeable
roundness of WE's face out of focus in the background.

Poor Josie: She is emotionally abused by Cooper, Catherine and Andrew,
no doubt mauled by Eckhardt, gun-threatened and yelled at by Cooper and
Harry, dies, laughed at by BOB, danced on by LMFAP, and then imprisoned
in wood/latex. Must have been a Monday.

Want all of the above? Then write a letter! I've copied the one I wrote
to Robert Iger at ABC below. The \'s and {} stuff are there because
I was using the LaTeX document preparation system, those of you who
have it on your system but haven't used it to write a letter can simply
copy the stuff between the ------ lines into a file called, say, letter.tex,
insert your own address and text, and type "latex letter.tex" and whatever
commands your local system uses to convert the resulting file to postscript
form and print that sucker. In any case, write ABC and Lynch/Frost a letter
today (don't blame Lynch/Frost for the cancellation, just tell them how
much you liked the show and some postings to the net, if you like)
if you want to see TP return to television!

\opening{Dear Mr. Iger,}
I was surprised and disappointed by ABC's recent announcement to the effect
that the show {\sl Twin Peaks} is being shelved until further notice. Having
watched and thoroughly enjoyed {\sl Twin Peaks} since its initial broadcast
last year, I have trouble understand the reasoning behind this decision.
I know that the ratings for the show have slipped quite a bit since the
Laura Palmer thread was (for the most part) resolved, but there are, in my
opinion, a number of good reasons not to discontinue the show. Foremost among
these is the fact that {\sl Twin Peaks'} regular audience, although it may be
small, is extremely loyal and very actively involved in the plot,
direction and casting of the show. Moreover, this audience is not just a bunch
of dreamy abolecents who dress up as their favorite characters and dream of
getting the actors' autographs at conventions and so forth. I belong to a
computer network newsgroup (a sort of international electronic bulletin board)
dedicated to {\sl Twin Peaks}, and the postings to this newsgroup indicate a
very well-educated, interested audience for the show, many of whom you've no
doubt heard from as I write this.

Many of these people have indicated that {\sl Twin Peaks} is about the only
reason they have these days for watching network television, and I put myself
in this category, too. For people such as us, ABC's decision only reinforces
the general impression that the networks are committed to banal, trite,
mindless programming, with audience share according to A. C. Nielsen \& Co.
(and hence profitability) being the only barometer by which to measure a show.
This is short-sighted and a grave mistake. For one, the Nielsen ratings have
no good way to measure audience loyalty. The type of people who watch
{\sl Twin Peaks} may not be as numerous as the {\sl Doogie Howser} crowd,
but they are generally better educated, and better informed
(read: well-heeled, if you like,) which should have some pull with advertisers.
Secondly, poor ratings in many cases are, in good part, a result of bad
decisions by the networks regarding the broadcast time of shows. In my opinion
(and this was voiced by several people I know and dozens in the above-mentioned
newsgroup,) moving {\sl Twin Peaks} to Saturday nights was a poor decision.
Most of these people still watched the show, but often videotapedit while they
were out (Saturday nights having mysteriously become a sort of social occasion
in our society in the past year) and watched it later. This also allowed them
the luxury of fast-forwarding through the commercials, something that
advertisers don't like to hear about. The general opinion is that
{\sl Twin Peaks} would have maintained much better ratings had it been left on
weekday evenings. Thirdly, a show like {\sl Twin Peaks} has influence beyond
its audience share because it is one of the very few shows on network
television which is truly original and willing to take some creative risks.
The networks airing those shows have something to point to, a sort of
creative feather in their corporate cap if you will, upon which to base an
argument that they are committed to quality programming. Finally, ABC and the
other networks should be especially careful these days in their decisions about
which shows to cancel because they are no longer the only game in town. I'm
sure I don't need to go into any detail with you about steadily shrinking
audience shares, jittery advertisers and the growing influence of cable
television, except to say that the cancellation of shows such as
{\sl Twin Peaks} is probably the main reason for the ``flight away from
the big three'' in the past decade. If people can't get it at your place, they
don't have to do without anymore --- they'll simply go someplace else.
If, in addition, they feel that their intelligence has been insulted, they
won't be back.

I urge you to reconsider this decision, and to put {\sl Twin Peaks} back on
the air soon. If copies of any or all of the postings to the above newsgroup
({\sl alt.tv.twin-peaks}) will help convince you of the high level of interest
that {\sl Twin Peaks} has generated, please let me know. I can arrange to have
the information sent to you.
\closing{Regards,}

\end{letter}

Two thoughts. We now have the link between the WKLP/WE plotline
and the Packard/Ekhardt plot that I was wondering about a couple of
weeks ago.

The second is a bit more complex. We've seen, a few times, that
the host of the 'inhabiting spirit' needs to be near for the spirit
to manifest in a vision (as opposed to a dream). (Perhaps this is too limited.
It certainly seems to be true for the Sr. Droolcup/GIANT, so I'm going
to over generalize and hypothisize that it is true for all of them.) If
this is so, who are the current hosts for BOB and the Man From Another Place?
There were only two people in the room...

Before BOB showed up, I commented to my friends that I bet that
Albert's autopsy of Josie showed slow poisoning, which I blamed on Cathrine.
(I admit the delicate timing was a bit much.) After BOB showed up, one
of my friends suggested perhaps I wasn't wrong, and the poison was 'blue
goo.' If that is it, then I think that Andrew becomes a stonger syspect
for a couple of things.

So, how much of what Andrew said in the elevator was a lie? Certainly
the bit about Josie warning him off sounded like one.

I've got a better idea. Since ABC is so damned concerned with turning a
profit, and since (as someone else has already mentioned), TP is basically
for people with IQ's higher than their shoe size, maybe we should press the
producers to terminate their contract with ABC altogether, and get it on a
network that has had a history of "intellectual" programming, namely, PBS.
If they can have Dr. Who for god-knows-how-long, why can't TP prosper there,
too?

Just a thought....(mostly because if somebody *does* make a decent cable
channel, I'm SOL, since we don't get cable....)

Final subplot for Twin Peaks SML108@psuvm.psu.edu (Scott the Great) 1991-02-18 16:44
Ah well, they have six more episodes to wrap things up. I have
an idea which allows them to get some revenge. Introduce a sub-plot
where "Invitation to Love" is cancelled and have Lucy lead a movement
to get it back on the air. After all, it could even be a locally produced
syndicated show. Then you could have even more parallel characters
representing BOB Iger and crew. Oh well, it'd be a fitting end at
least...

Twin Peaks - any possible future? halcyon!hikaru@sumax.seattleu.edu (Demosthenes) 1991-02-18 16:44
I've written my letter to BOB Iger, and I am confident that Twin Peaks
will be placed back on the air, one way or the other.

But, come on! What the hell did the ABSOLUTE GENIUSES (not!) at ABC
expect when they took Twin Peaks from it's fairly-high rated Tuesday time
slot and put it in at the 10:00 Pm saturday night graveyard slot? If they
replaced it in a weeknight slot, the ratings would not be so bad - they
might not be as good as Cosby (yecch) , but they would NOt be at 86th
place. By the same token, if the Nielsen system took into account VCR
recordings, the ratings would not be as bad.

And on another topic:
Certain characters and situations have not been consistent since first
season. For instance, are just supposed to think that Bobby, Audrey,
Shelly, James, etc. have just been skipping school for the past week or
so? Last I heard, they were high school seniors. Second, what happened to
Ben, Jerry, and Bobby being the complete a-holes they were first season?
I mean, they were the absolute slime on TP for the first six or seven
episodes - besides Leo, of course. Bobby was a murderer wannabe/drug
dealer etc., Ben and Jerry were organized criminals, pimps, etc. And now
they might as well be Ward Cleavers, all of 'em.

that it was not ABC who did this but the producers. Now is
this some BS that ABC is saying to clear itself from all us
irrate Peak Freaks or is this in fact true. Now if it is true
than to whom would it be better to write to: ABC or the producers???

Little Man from Another Place adm@ecl.psu.edu 1991-02-18 19:21
Well, I kinda wanted to say something, but somehow all the thrill has
gone out of discussing plots lately...sigh...
Anyway, I was puzzled by the appearance of the LMFAP at the end of the
last(!) show. As I recall, Cooper basically told us that he represented
Leland. Witness this conversation from Leland's final episode (dialog
approximate but very close!):
Cooper: What did the little man do in my dream?
        Truman: uh...he danced?
Cooper: Exactly. After LAura's death, Leland danced compulsively.

Was the LMFAP stuck in just to be supernatural and spooky &c, or is
Leland coming back, too?

Add my vote to the David-Warner-was-wasted-miserably crowd.

Unless UC Irvine has a two day expire, there should be five or six
examples of the address sitting right in the news spool directory. Ask
your news administrator to teach you how to search for text in articles
if you don't already know how.

Anyway, here's two from Michael Lee's article:

Well, here are some addresses

Oh, "repeated on January 26th". I see, this is another joke, yes?

Oh. HA-HA! Very good, that.

Help! zecca@tramp.Colorado.EDU (Admiral Avenger) 1991-02-18 22:07
An occasional _Peaks_ watcher is looking for help with a little trivia.
What is the name of the chap who plays "BOB"? (And I don't mean Ray
Wise/Leland.)

Please respond by email to zecca@tramp.colorado.edu. Thanks in advance.

We've an entire newsgroup dedicated to a single show- we've confused
hundreds of people who thought there was a 1/26 show (wasn't there? ';-))
we've analyzed the phases of the moon- guess what,

WE ALREADY ARE FANATICS!!!!!!!

Nonetheless- WRITE ABC- SAVE TWIN PEAKS!

Oh, heavens, that's unexpectedly pessimistic.

Granted, Lynch's original, quirky burst of visions in 1989 -- as
embodied in INDUSTRIAL SYMPHONY #1, WILD AT HEART and the first TWIN
PEAKS season -- has "been done" and shouldn't be needlessly rehashed.
It was a special moment in TV history and you can't really go back.

However, the show today is far from stale! It has great promise. You
really have to sit back, disentangle yourself from year-old concerns and
expectations, and look at what they've built.

 * The ensemble has quietly turned into one of the best in television --
each character's personality is sharply etched.

 * It's a showcase for directors and actors. Ever notice, when you go
to the theatre, how many credits from SPENSER and ST:TNG there are?
Those shows virtually specialize(d) in developing young talent. TWIN
PEAKS stands to do the same. We'll be reaping the benefits for years to
come.

 * Ironically, we're just starting to see Kyle MacLachlan stretch out.
There is so much we don't know about Cooper's motivation and inner self.
When the barriers start to crumble, we're going to have some classic TV!

----------

The truth is, folks, that if they take it off, we're NOT going to see
anything half as good in its place. There is no "conservation of
quality" rule in TV. The principals will wander off to work in other
media or go back to retirement, and we can settle back to another season
of MACGYVER. Is that really something to wish for?

NO WAY!

So I must gently disagree with Jerry. We should try to convince ABC to
keep TWIN PEAKS on its schedule. Even if you are personally a little
less interested than you used to be, share the benefits of your
eloquence with the rest of us! Let them cancel WHO'S THE BOSS? if they
have to cancel something. :-)

And whatsherface who played Evelyn Marsh was in another episode.

(Don't ask me why I watch DIVORCE COURT. It's so delightfully tawdry that
it can be fun to watch in small does. It's certainly funnier than most
sitcoms.)
