Some of us believe that the Giant resides in the old waiter, the same way
that BOB resided in Leland and MIKE resided in Gerard.  Others believe the
little man is saying that HE (the litle man) and the giant are one and the 
same.

On the most basic level, Windom went there to gain power, and Dale went
there to rescue Annie.  Dale had little choice.  Maybe I don't understand 
your question phrased as "what are they doing in the Black Lodge."

I assume that's where your tape ran out.  The scene is quite surreal and
quite involved, and I'm sure I would be flamed for any attempt to re-create
it from memory.  Maybe somebody has the detailed description of it (I've
seen it posted here once before).

     The only questionable part, IMHO, is whether the
the LMFAP, and SDC (waiter) are all "one in the same."  I think it's very
clear that the Giant and SDC are "one in the same."  The first
time we saw the Giant and SDC, there wasn't much hinting at this
sameness, but in the "Leland dies" episode, here are some things
that happen:  Cooper is talking to the exhausted Mike telling
him that he saw Mike in his dream and that he needed help.  Cooper
asked about the Giant saying that he needed his help to which Mike said that 
he was "as real as I" and that Cooper "must ask him [the Giant] first"
to get help.  As soon as Cooper leaves the room, he sees SDC
in the hallway saying, "That milk will cool down on you, but it's
getting warmer now" out of the blue.
     Later, the Major picks up SDC on the road and takes him to the
roadhouse (upon request) and appears just as Cooper says, "Someone's
missing."  SDC chews gum and says [I'm skipping parts of course]
, "That gum you look will come back in style," which upon hearing
this, Cooper remembers his dream and gets his ring back from the
Giant.
     All of these events make it obvious to me that the Giant is 
the dreamsoul of SDC.

The Terry Gross interview with Ray Wise suggests that there were no
directions:

TG: Let's talk about that last scene--the death scene, after you confess and
    then you're barking.  Whose idea was it for you to bark?
    
RW: That's me.  That's all me.  Tim Hunter directed that episode and Tim did
    a wonderful job.  But I had all these things sort of planned out in my
    head, the way I wanted to approach it anyway.  The times when I was
    possessed by BOB I wanted to exhibit certain things, and then when I
    became Leland again I wanted to show certain things.
    
    The bark just sort of came out--a very feral thing, very wolflike, very
    animal-like, and very vicious, and it just seemed to fit with the woods
    motif.

    You know, the wolf in the woods--that kind of thing.  I did it anyway.

I have a question or two concerning the UK video releases of Twin Peaks.

For Christmas, I received a video containing what claimed to be the uncut
episodes 1,2 and 3 of the TV series. What it actually contained was the
2nd, 3rd, 4th episodes , ie the pilot episode was not on it. My question
is: Has this pilot episode been releases on video in the UK, or even
anywhere else on a format playable by UK VHS videos? I have seen a tape
with a completely different cover design to the covers of the other TP
tapes, with a picture of Ronnette among other things on the front, called
simply 'Twin Peaks', with a running time of, well, longer than I remember
the pilot being. I have been told this is a self-contained film containing
the pilot episode plus a tagged-on ending. So, is this true, and if so can
I get a tape with the original pilot episode with no alterations ?

One other point about this series of videos - the 3rd tape contains
'episodes 7 & 8', which by my calculations are the last episode of series
1 and the extra-long 1st episode of series 2. This is pain in the butt cos
I already have the entire 2nd series videoed, but I guess there's nothing
I can do about that...:-(

Thank you for that, Rocky!  Much obliged!  Again and again it keeps 
coming back to one thing: most of the details that we in this group are 
so diligently cataloging and trying to relate to each other are just 
coincidences.  Which is not to say there are not any plans, there are 
some (the Arthurian motif is definitely planned, but how does it allude 
to the plot?  IMHO, it's a stretch to make a 1 for 1 correspondence).  
But it IS fun!  My quest is to find out which of the details were planned 
and have a meaning; which of the detail were not planned in the beginning 
but were noticed later and used by the writers/directors; and which of 
the detail were just for the atmosphere that Lynch loves so much.

One final thing - I believe that Ben Horne is mixed up with the Lodges in 
some way, too.  Remember the scene after Wheeler leaves and there is that
"hand shaking" sound that also occurs at Glastonbury Grove whenever 
someone leaves or enters the Lodge...it is suddenly cut off.  Is Ben 
trying to be good because he knows about Bob?  Ben knew both Laura and
Leland, and he was there when Leland was unmasked by Cooper.  Maybe Ben 
has discovered his own connection with Bob - after all, Leland never knew 
he was possessed.  Ben is smart - maybe he put 2 + 2 together and figured 
out that he was being manipulated, too.  I don't think Ben killed Laura.
But he IS reacting in the same way Laura did - by trying to be "good".  
It is that split, the duality of good/evil in everyman.  Remember that 
Gerard (with MIKE inhabiting him) fainted dead away when Ben enter the 
room.  

Now, which of these details are red herrings?

I remember in the Oct. 1990 Cop Rock/Twin Peaks special ABC
did the week before the second season, there was a quick thing with
Frost and Lynch.  They were asked how well thought out Twin Peaks
was.  Frost said something like, "Very well thought out," and 
Lynch said, "Not well thought out," almost at the same time.  (Just
a funny thing.)

I also think Ben has at least had contact with BOB.  I
had previously thought that Mike's comment about BOB being around
for the last 40 years meant that he'd been haunting Leland all along,
but the interview says that he was only in him for 4 or 5 leaving
plenty of time to work on other hosts while Ben grew up
in Twin Peaks.

 I have just finished reading _Needful Things_, Stephen King's latest.
 (I don't think its his best, but once I got into it, it was hard to

 Anyway the small town deputy in the book, compares himself (sort of)

Michael Anderson, the 3 foot, 7 inch dwarf who played the dancing,
backward-talking weirdo in David Lynch's series Twin Peaks, has landed a
role as a romantic lead. In March he will star in Fool's Fire, A surrealistic
adaptation of Edgar Allen Poe's "Hopfrog" for PBS.
(For the record, Anderson can speak backward, a strange talent he
developed in junior high and which he demonstrated to an amazed and

Anderson had little to say about the upcoming movie sequel to Twin
Peaks, tentatively titled Fire Walk With Me, except that it is an "expansion

Well Bob whilst in Leyland when he was arrested admitted to killing
Laura, as did Leyland when he broke down when Bob "shuffled off to Buffalo" (any significance in Buffalo BTW ????). But did Bob kill Laura while he was in
Leyland ???? In Laura's Diary Bob keeps appearing to her (when writing) so
can Bob pop in and out of people at will ??? Leyland thinks he killed Laura
but does he because Bob told him to think/belive that ? After all Bob made Laura 
believe she was a cheap "coke addict, Lesbian etc ...".

Anybody want to disprove that Leyland (Bob) killed Maddy. I think it was
all done by mirrors !!!!

Then not so long ago, here, someone posted original scripts and stuff that 
didn't make it to the final cuts and one of the scenes was Ben turning to 
see Josie after Audrey left the office.

USA Today did an article on the movies of 1992 on Friday the 10th.  When
they mentioned Twin Peaks:Fire Walk With Me they said it would be a fall
release.  Everything I have read on the newsgroup says a spring (March)
release.  Does anyone know if it will be out in March or will it be out
sometime in the fall?

     I'm not quite sure, but there was that episode...when Leland's hair
had just turned white, where Leland enters Ben's office and begins singing,
and Ben jumps up on the desk and starts dancing...kind of reminicent(sp?)
of the dwarf dancing...

  Looks like they are in jpeg format.  Jpeg to gif software is available from
  various places incl. the official archive site uunet.uu.net under
  graphics/jpeg.

Booiinngg  (me doing a double take)-- Did you forget all of the singing
and dancing Leland did?  How about when he re-entered Ben's office 
with "I'm back!"  What I meant was that the characters on L.A. Law
were very unusual like those found in TP.

My friend's roommate worked on the film, the interiors, which were shot at 
Lynch/Frost studios in Sherman Oaks and what I have heard from my friend 
is that it was finished in early December and the final product looked a little
"unpromising".

I know you guys must have posted this to death a long time ago, but I saw
Sherilyn Fenn in KISS OF THE BEAST on Showtime the other night, and I've seen
her in TWO MOON JUNCTION.  Anyone got a list of her films, besides WILD AT
HEART?

No, what it contained was Episodes 1, 2, and 3. The pilot is exactly that,
the pilot. It is *not* considered to be "Episode #1". Call it "Episode #0"

are actually referred to by Lynch/Frost Productions as "Episode #n", and
"Episode #1" is what they call the first one-hour episode.

Sort of.

That is exactly what it is.

Yes and no. If you want the broadcast version of the pilot, buy this
one-off tape and watch the first 95 minutes of it. At the point where
Sarah Palmer wakes up screaming from a nightmare, push the "Stop" button
on your VCR. At that point, you will just seen the pilot without
alterations, with the sole exception that you won't have seen the last
few seconds of the pilot, which is of Person Unknown [at the time] digging
up the locket in the woods.

Other than that, no, the original pilot is not commercially available.

I think it's because she already had other career plans before the
movie idea got going.  She's going to be in _Where the Day Takes You_ 
(May release) and _Wayne's World_ (February).

prequel, that it is a sequel, that it will be out in the spring, that it will
be out in the fall, that half the cast won't be in it, on and on...

On top of all the confused information, I am trying to figure out who will go
see this movie if PEAKS was such a bomb that ABC cancelled it.  Can the PEAKS
fans alone make this thing possible?

All this crap just because ABC didn't want to stick with one of the greatest
television series ever.  Even if the second season didn't match the first, it
was still the most watchable show on the tube.  I feel so disenchanted.

Did anyone else notice that, in the scene where Bobby Briggs and his
mum are talking, just before the Major reappears, that the Briggs
family have a lampstand in the shape of an owl?

Oh ye of little faith... there is the possibility that the movie will
just plain suck (as someone with inside info previously mentioned), 
but low ratings don't mean that there aren't enough fans for a movie.
TV ratings don't account for people who videotape shows and watch them later
(as I'm sure many people did during the Saturday night shows in the 2nd 
season).  No do they account for people who just can't watch TV very
much but would still like to see the movie.

As for what we know... here's my collection of unconfirmed, 2% Guarantee,
nothing-but-rumours information:  FWWM will open on March 1st in London.
A US release could come as late as next fall depending on 
distributor problems.  Lara Flynn Boyle and Sherilynn Fenn will not
be in the movie because of previous commitments.  Kyle MacLachlan
is in the movie, but only in a small supporting role.

FYI, a .gif of Sheryl Lee is on alt.binaries.pictures.misc
right now scanned from some sort of promotional thing for
_Fire Walk With Me_.  It mentions that Harry Dean Stanton
is in the film.  Does anyone know what he plays and could
someone help me identify him?

about this was going on. He plays the manager of the Fat Trout trailer court.
Keifer Sutherland and some younger rock star play FBI agents and David Bowie
also has a brief appearance as an FBI agent.  Elvis had a conflict so he
had to pass.

Not sure what you mean by 'help me identify him'. If you want to know what
he looks like, check out 'Repo Man'. He's the kid's primary mentor.

I still have not figured out why the soap that was shown in TP
is/was of importance...they kept showing it, I think the same 
episode too, a number of times.  I am pretty sure it will 
reappear in the movie too.  It seems like such a corny soap...
a parody of sorts (heh). It reminds me of a movie a way while back
titled, "Tunnel Vision."

Well, the soap DOES have SOME importance, doesn't it?

Actually, Sherilyn Fenn will be returning to do the movie.  She wasn't
going to originally, but they got her in for a few scenes, according to
things that have been reported on this newsgroup.

As far as I've heard, Lara Flynn Boyle is the only one who isn't
coming back, and they've found another actress to play the part of
Donna.  Her part was never really that integral to the television
series, anyway.  However, her part in the movie should be a central
one, so let's hope the actress they've picked is a good one.

Lynch and Frost were smart to hire a lot of has-been
actors (e.g. Peggy Lipton, Russ Tamblyn, Richard Beymer, etc).
That way they can be guaranteed to return later.  All the
"up-and-coming stars" seem to have other commitments.

Are you certain about Sherilyn Fenn?  The slee.gif was scanned
from some kind of promotional thing for FWWM.  It's a picture
of Sheryl Lee alive and smiling with plastic wrappings.  Next
to it is a sort of letter that reads:

Hm.  Someone has digitized a "Fire Walk With Me" promo piece on
alt.binaries.misc, with Sheryl Lee alive and wrapped in plastic.
The text next to her on the promo piece says:

Guess I missed those postings. I suppose it is possible they worked her
in for a couple of scenes when they were shooting interiors down in LA.
She isn't actually important until after Laura dies, but we do
know that Laura came by the house to do her usual thing with Audrey's
brother the last week of her life (maybe even the last day, I don't
have my timeline handy). So if they thought it would help the box office to
include Audrey, they might well put her in later if she got free from her
other committments in time. After all, Coop has nothing to do with the
week before her death and they wanted to make him the major figure. They
might even stick in a few scenes after everything wrapped if they thought
they needed it. It's been done before. Guess our friends in the Big Smoke
will have to let us know come March 2...

Ronnie Rocket was suppose to be Lynch's next project until FWWM
came up, so it could be that he's now devoting time to RR.  (or ABC
just sucks as usual and aren't sticking to their mid-season release
promise).  Anyway, it's my understanding that On the Air is supposed
to not only be about a radio station, but about radio in the "early days."

No, it was always a different episode. The "importance" of it is that it
reflected Twin Peaks in a microcosm. The events in the INVITATION TO
LOVE excerpts often reflected what was going on in the "real" world, the
most obvious example being bad boy Leo being shot right when bad boy
Montana on ITL got shot.

On another level, it was something of a surreal joke. TWIN PEAKS was a
soap opera, and in it, the characters were obsessed with a soap opera.
And it provided for some random weirdness. If you think about it, you'll
realize that it was on TV at totally random times of the day and week
(in one episode, it was apparently on on a Sunday morning).

Maybe yes, maybe no. It was missing from the entire second season of TP.
Maybe it was cancelled. :-)

I don't think anyone has a *definitive* list.

Everything that I've heard indicated that with the above two exceptions,
everyone in the cast of the TV series who *should* be in the movie will
be. Since the movie is set in the week prior to the events in the pilot,
there will be various characters introduced later in the series -- such
as, say, Michael Parks/Jean Renault or David Duchovny/Denise Bryson --
who most likely won't be in the movie since there's no reason for the
character to be there.

Can someone tell me whether or not the Twin Peaks tapes as released in the 
boxed set in North America have stereo sound? Someone a few weeks ago, I 
think in England, said the tapes released there were NOT stereo.

We didn't see it many episodes because ITL was the first thing on the
list of cuts whenever directors made a show too long.

When visiting location shooting this September I got a chance to talk to
Jack Nance (one of these days I'll post my summary of our second visit
that included this). It came out that originally they were supposed to be
shooting RR but switched to FWWM. RR was the next project and Jack was
very enthusiastic about it. Shooting was supposed to start after wrapping
FWWM, but no projected date came up in our conversation. Has anyone heard
whether RR ever got off the ground as planned and what its status is?

According to "Twin Peaks, the Inside Story" (or something like that--it's a
a paperback in 8.5x11 format), they had a real ball doing ITL but dropped it
because it became too much work to do it right and they just didn't have the
time.  By the way, this book is worth trying to find. It is full of quotes
from both published interviews and stuff the author got himself. B/W publicity
stills (quality not the greatest) and fairly detailed scenerios for all the
episodes up to Lelands death (I think that's where it stops). A must have for
a peak freak.

Sorry, Real name: Twin Peaks Behind the Scenes, by Mark Altman.
I think there is another book out there with 'inside story' in its title and it
was successfully sued by L&F for some sort of missdeed. TPBTS looks pretty
legit to me and I recommend it. It was not my intention to recommend this
other book, whatever its name is.

As Rocky says in a separate post, the specific reason given (attributed by
Altman to Harley Payton) was the ITL was at the head of the list for cutting
when they needed to fit actual air time. I guess when they realized this
they just stopped doing it at all. Interesting side note, Payton is quoted
as saying one idea they had for ITL was "having the lead actors come to town".
By this I guess he means something like that they would have come up with some
reason for the "actors" in ITL, to visit TP, perhaps to shoot a scene from
ITL in TP. Talk about a play within a play. I wish they had done it.

The Soap Opera seen in Twin Peaks, _Invitation to Love_ or something like that
was sortta like a parody of Twin Peaks (my interpretation) 

Originally, they shot a lot more footage than they could air, but it was
just basic soapy senarios which would certainly make the viewer laugh, but
they over indulged in this sub-sub plot and never showed all the scenes.

I think I remember hearing somewhere that Frank Silva who plays BOB was also a  cameraman working on the set of Twin Peaks. Is this true?

I just realized something.  Ronnie Rocket abbreviates to RR, same as
the RR Diner in TP.  Also the initials of Ronald Reagan.  Is this another
Lynchian hidden meaning?

We've probably already gone over this, but I recently saw Girlfriend From
Hell, with Dana Ashbrook.  I thought the movie pretty-much sucked, no big
surprise, but I'd hoped to see a bit more of ol' Bobby.  Unfortunately, 
he spends most of the movie unconcious in a closet.  If you want to see
a really bad movie though- go for it.

Not quite. He was a set dresser (doesn't have to do with costumes, rather
with the set itself).

Actually, if you go by the amount of time devoted to the character on screen,
Donna Hayward was right there at the heart of the story.  After all, she and
James were supposed to be the supercouple of Twin Peaks.  She got a number of
featured storylines -- Harold Smith, the Donna-James-Maddy triangle, acting
like Laura, even James' "Rebel Without A Clue" James Dean ripoff.  It was only
after James Marshall left that the writers had no idea what to do with her.

She is.  The name is Moira Kelly, and I caught her in some weepy TV movie-of-
the-week where she distinguished herself by being the only character not to
be hamming her lines out soap-opera style.  (Even Sheryl Lee, who I think
played her sister, didn't do too hot.)

In a local newspaper was an article about Twin Peaks. It mentiones a Hypercard
Stack: The Twin Peaks Bedside Companion, by Mark F. Lewis from Mustang,
Oklahoma. I and several other TP enthousiasts like to have that stack. Could
some kind soul give me a pointer to a FTP site were I can get it.

 sweetheart (right towards the end of the series)...
  Two penguins walking across the ice, one turns to the other
  and says 'You look like you're wearing a tuxedo', and the
  second one replies 'Maybe I am'.
 
 For my own part, I found it quite droll, but no one else that I've
 related it to has got much out of it, regardless of their TPness.

 Is there something deeper to it, does anyone know?  As far as I can
 tell it seems quite hard to get anything more out of it than just a 
 silly joke, but who knows with this dude...

Well now *that's* interesting... the actress playing Donna Hayward in the film
once played Sheryl Lee's sister?  Presumably the two bear some physical
resemblance to each other...

Any news on a Canadian release date?  Are we fated to wait for New Line
or is there a Cdn distributor who may pick it up earlier?

   When you say "again," are you implying that there was to be a Robocop 3?

I do not merely imply it, I state it explicitly.  In fact, I believe
the latest Cinefantastique has a story on it.  And, unless they fold,
it not merely ``was to be'', it gwine be, but with a different actor
as Robocop.

It was there for two reasons.  1) To show just what kind of sense of
humor (or lack thereof) Coop has.  2) To further reinforce, both by his
telling and her enjoyment, just how deep in love they are.

I have a dreadful feeling that this prequel is only going to flesh out the
last part of the Laura Palmer Diary.  We already know much of what happened,
right?  I'm not suggesting that the movie will be a waste, by any means, but
it seems like a sequel would be ever so much more productive.

Way back last spring, someone posted about an Italian re-mix album of Floating
Into the Night.  Does anyone know what the title was/ who re-mixed it?
Can you get it in the States?  I don't think I imagined it.
