Twin Peaks popping up in the strangest places palmerd@washington.cs.unc.edu (Daniel Palmer) 1992-04-17 07:30
From Sesame Street to.... Weird Al Yankovic's new album "Off the Deep End".

Al has a parody of the song "U Can't Touch This" by Hammer, called "I Can't
Watch This". In it, he takes jabs at several shows including TP:

Can't stand Twin Peaks
Let's lynch those donut-eating freaks
^^^^^

cute, Al, real cute.

Anyway, just thought I should pass this along.

I only saw it as a symbol of impending danger. You'll notice that when
BOB appears at the end in the ring of sycamore trees (btw, did anyone
notice that in Cooper's original LMFAP dream, there were 12 candles--
the same amount as the trees? Just curious), that he is reaching out
with his right hand, the same hands that were quivering. I was a little
disappointed with what they did with this very effective piece of fore-
shadowing, though. Cooper was the only one of the people with quivering
hands (save for Pete's pickup truck--"Twelve Rainbow Trout"--which Windham
absconded with--"Grand Theft, Auto. The Log Lady stole my truck"), that
had a major part (or a part at all) in the actual danger, therefore
the full effect was a little lost on me, but then, considering the long
wait between this episode and the last two final ones, the effect wasn't
completely lost...

The long pause is a standard technique used in all the arts. It's purpose
is to force the observer to stop and think, to listen to the inner voice.
Contrast this to the barage/sound-bites/non-stop-action of the commercial or
mass media which is designed to not allow the observer time to think. Thinking
may ruin the consumer desires that have been implanted, and we certainly
can't have everyone listening to their inner voice, can we?

It doesn't sound like you'd be a big fan of the famous John Cage piece
for piano, what's it called? Something like 4 minutes, 35 seconds. It's
all rests. The pianist comes out and places the sheet music on the piano,
removes the keyboard cover, places her watch on the piano, and --- silence.
I think it's art, but maybe it's kind of an eastern philosophical thing.
Most people in the US hate silence, why is that?

Some time back a couple of things were posted about FIRE WALK WITH ME,
namely a cast list (from the laser disc set, if I recall correctly)
and a very skeletal plot synopsis.

I was wondering: would whoever posted these two things please mail
them to me (via e-mail, o.c.)? And also please tell me where you got
the plot info?

You see, my friends don't believe ***anything*** I've been telling them
about the movie. It's been a difficult time ever since I cried "Wolf"
in re the episode featuring the spider woman and all that.

Tips for understanding Wild at Heart pharvey@mipos3.intel.com (Paul Harvey) 1992-04-17 13:20
For those of you who could not understand WAH, and who want to, try this:

Rent the Wizard of Oz and Wild at Heart (with sex scenes, otherwise forget it!)

WAKE UP!, use your mind. Study both movies. This in not light entertainment
or info-tainment or MTV! If you are not interested in putting in the mind
effort required for these movies, don't bother. Stick with Wheel of Fortune.
The WoOZ can probably be enjoyed by someone whose mind is idling, WAH probably
can not. As a clue, WAH, besides being a remake of WoOZ, is a study of how the
word phuk can be soooo good, and soooo bad, as used in US culture. Then
ask yourself the question: Why is everyone so wild at heart, but crazy on
top? Whoever edited out the sex scenes is definitly crazy on top!

I'm pretty sure Twin Peaks was made up as it went along -- or rather,
several episodes before it went along. Lynch and Frost have said that
they had the killer picked out from the very beginning, but didn't know
how they were going to reveal him. I think the entire Euro-ending/first
dream sequence was scripted in a hurry, and then they wrote the rest of
the series from the premise of "we've got 20 minutes of footage in the
can, how can we use this." That's how they jury-rigged all the false
clues in the first season based on the dream sequence.

By the second season they were pretty obviously coming up with new plots
on the fly. For example, after the first season Lara Flynn Boyle was
complaining about how dull her part as Donna was, so they came up with the
whole is-she-turning-into-Laura plot. Also it's around this time that they
start introducing whole plots that had nothing to do with the stories that
had been played so far -- the food critic/Norma's mom plot being the
biggest example. You'll notice that the focus on BOB as a real being and
the owls just comes out of the blue around this time too -- aside from a
brief shot of an owl in #1004, there's nothing to indicate the Lodge
plotline at all; after the diary was published, all hell broke loose. Also,
the really hasty way in which the entire Laura plot was wrapped up (what
DID happen to the one-armed man?) makes it look like either the producers
didn't think about it very long... or they were under pressure from above
to end it.

The funny thing is, at the same time there are a number of plotlines which
were planted very carefully early on, and not brought up again for months.
For example, the smell of engine oil, which Jacoby mentioned in #2001 and
Maddy smelled in #2007, only really became important in the final episode.
Maybe this was after-the-fact plot kludging, but I think they thought
about some aspects of the show throughout its run.

If TP was like any other soap, there was a master plan, which the producers
and story editors handed down to the individual writers, but we don't know
how developed that plan was beforehand. I'm sure all the writers had
outlines handed down from on high... though not necessarily by Lynch and
Frost. If Kyle's word is anything to go by, they weren't around for a
lot of the second season. Oh well.

Possibly. But couldn't it have been a mixture of the two? With
the script for 002 already written at that time, Lynch simply
shot the footage that would be the basis of the dream sequence -
and used it for the Euroending. I really don't see why, after
all the "intricacies" we've discovered in TP, everyone has to
jump to the conclusion that Lynch and Frost went "jury rigging"
to save twenty minutes of footage. Doesn't sound like them.

Sure there is. In 1004, Hawk tells Cooper at the Roadhouse about
facing your inner fears and your soul being utterly annhilated
if you show imperfect courage -- that's the Black Lodge gantlet,
isn't it? It's the scene that starts, "Do you believe in a soul?"
     And Hawk says, "Several."
Like the engine oil you mention in a minunte, the seeds of the Lodges
were planted very, very early. Major Briggs first talks about the
White Lodge in 2001 to Bobby in the diner.

Agreed somewhat. They were under pressure to deliver the answer
to "Who Killed Laura Palmer?" before November Sweeps. I don't know
if they were under further pressure to catch the killer fairly
     quickly after that or what.

Excuse the uninitiated. What is "after-the-fact plot kludging?"

> >If TP was like any other soap,

TP was not like "any other soap." TP, like LA Law, Hill Street, etc,
incorporated certain aspects of the soap opera into its format -
but there were also aspects of the episodic drama, the slapstick
comedy, the mini-series, the mystery, the SF/Fantasy aspects.
Taking that into consideration, the soap opera is not really a huge
part of TP (and by the end, was unfitting almost all-together -- the
pine weasel and Who's Donna's Dad? storylines, straight from the
pages of As the Stomach Turns, didn't fit TP at all if you'll remember).

> >there was a master plan, which the producers

Yeah, I heard that David and Mark had split until just about the
end as well. Everyone does all this bitching and moaning about
why the series got such horrible ratings in the US and was canned,
but really, it was as much Lynch/Frosts's fault as anyone's. They
didn't have the dedication to the project to stick around and
     keep writing and directing.

Anyway, TP wasn't written like a soap. TP was written like
a prime time drama. The writers met to kick around ideas etc,
for the episode in question. Everyone's got a copy of the first
draft script. Etc. Things become ironed out. It's a very
     open process.
Except that for TP, entire pages of the scripts were removed before
they were given to the writers - these were written by Frost and
Lynch with no credit, I heard, though that's probably just rumor -
and the actors were only given THEIR scenes in the script, not
     the whole thing.

Except that the show hadn't been picked up for anything beyond the pilot
at the time of the dream-sequence shooting (it was done in Snoqualmie at
the time of the pilot -- check how different Coop's bedroom looks in the
Euro-version, and the quality of the lighting etc), so they wouldn't have
written the script for #1002 yet. They could have had vague ideas, true --
but they wouldn't have set too much in stone. After all, they had no idea
how they'd have to structure the plot until they knew how many episodes
they'd be picked up for.

Also, for that matter, when Jason Hall posted a summary of the script for
#1001 a few months back, it was missing important things like Jacoby having
the necklace in the final scene. This implies that even by the scripting
stage major plot points were still being worked out.

Did he? Correct me if I'm wrong -- as I'm sure you will -- but to my
memory the speech about the Dweller on the Threshold annihilating your
soul came from #2011 or #2012. The speech at the Roadhouse in #1003 was
about Laura's dreamsoul wandering the earth, not the Lodges.

Which was written and shot about nine months after the first season wrapped,
and a year and a half after the pilot. The numbers aren't exact, but the
point is that the show had been around a long time before the first
concrete evidence of the Lodges.

I think it might also have had something to do with contracts expiring.
Notice that Sheryl Lee, Ray Wise, Joan Chen, and James Marshall had all
exited in what could have been pretty final ways by the end of #2009.

Saying "Oh yeah, THIS is what that bit really meant", when in fact the
writers at the time had no intention of using it that way. The writers of
Doctor Who are masters at that sort of continuity twisting. Having the
red drapes represent Jacques' cabin in the first season, and then changing
that into the symbol of the Lodges towards the end of the show, is another
example... or, on the other hand, making up the Jacques-cabin solution when
they didn't intend that as the meaning either at the time of shooting (IMHO)
is the same thing too.

Examples of plot twists that were never planned at the time the storyline
began are all over the place in TP. Take Andrew Packard's return from
the dead -- a soap-opera move totally out of character with the very
serious, down-to-earth pilot. Try to convince me that was planned from the
beginning.

OK, if TP was like any other NIGHTTIME DRAMA... (the writing process on shows
like Wiseguy and Knots Landing are pretty much the same)

What you've described is an ordinary soap opera story conference... except
that the PRODUCERS and story editors do the sit-down usually. Of course,
if you check the Writers' list, you'll notice that the writers usually
were the producers on TP, which kinda makes the distinction moot.

Hmm? I hadn't heard. For which episodes? The revelation of BOB in #2007,
probably, but what other plot twists were kept secret from everyone?

This isn't true. When Lynch and Frost pitched Twin Peaks, then called
Northern Passage, to ABC, they pitched a series: a pilot and seven
episodes. They were given the go ahead at the pitch stage to PRODUCE
the pilot and write the other seven. The pilot would be shot on
location, then moved to sound stages for the series.
It is very conceivable that the entire first season was written
before the pilot was shot, or finished shooting.

I have a script for 1001. It is labled a fourth draft and has a date
(which I can't remember) so I don't know how close to final it is,
or how close to final Jason Hall's is, but the Jacoby revelation
     is in mine.

I think the Dweller on the Threshold conversation happened about
when you say -- but go back and watch their conversation in 1004,
because Hawk is very clearly talking about what evolved into the
     concepts of the Lodges.

Well... If you're looking to find fault with Twin Peaks, yeah, the
first concrete evidence didn't come until 2001 (the "ninth" episode
of Twin Peaks -- my God, they took so long to introduce it!). But
if you are looking at Twin Peaks from a "this is what they were
talking about" attitude, then it's cool foreshadowing.
I go in for the latter (as I suspect most of us do).

I don't know about this but I don't think so. Sheryl and Ray both
appeared later (in the final episode). Joan was not quite gone yet,
just dead -- I suspect that when Ben Horne turned suddenly in his
office during the last episode, he was looking at Josie. And I
suspect that there will be some Josie-rescuing when Harry and
Hawk raid the waiting room during the post-"How's Annie?" parts
of FWWM (which isn't a spoiler, just my intuition).
I do know that James Marshall wanted out and would probably not
have been around at all if a third season had happened - but he's
in the movie, isn't he? So who cares.

That's what we English Lit majors call "bullshit." It doesn't matter

The subconscious is a strange and fucked up thing.

Try to convince me it wasn't an option from the beginning. I heard
"Andrew died in a boating accident about a year and a half ago" and
     I said, "He's not dead."
I'm not saying Andrew's introduction was planned the way it eventually
happened. But Lynch and Frost certainly set up the backstory for
Andrew in such a way that the character could be brought in at any
     time.

Wiseguy was more of a soap than Twin Peaks was, in terms of serial
plotting. Wiseguy worked on "story arcs" as I recall (though I
never really watched it) - serials. But I basically agree with you
     here.

Except that soaps are never written with closure in mind. You
will never sit in a story conference and hear one of the writers
or producers say, "Listen, I have this idea. It would run two
episodes and then end with a bang." Doesn't happen this way.
In soap operas, the premise is pitched and written into the serial
before anybody has even thought of an ending.
Contract stips are like, "Began a storyline that ran 14 weeks, you
     get paid soandso."
Peaks always had the end in mind when it began something - like
Lucy's plot summary for "Invitation to Love" in 1005, a plot
summary which describes exactly what is going to happen in Twin
Peaks for the next 3 episodes (including 1005). That's closure.

Well, pretty much for all of them. At least, all of them during
the first season and the Laura-storyline of the second. After
that, I don't know. The series had really died. So I don't
think anybody really worried about the media getting its hands
     on it at that point.

I just thought I'd mention this: for all of you who liked Twin Peaks ( and
who on this group didn't ;-), you might enjoy Lair of the White Worm. It's a bit
on the campy side, but it has some *very* Peakish aspects (takes place in a
small community, freakish dream sequences, a fair bit of humor etc.) It dosen't
have any TP actors or directors or anything, it just struck me as being
something you guys would like.

Other movies by the same director as Lair of the White Worm (Ken Russell)
are:
     Altered States (a must see!)
Gothic (somewhat twisted, but hey, Lynch falls in that category.)
Whore (different-that's all I can say, and not what you think.)

No, I don't think I would like the John Cage piece, (even though I know
how to play the piano). Right now I have been listening to the new
album 'Doppleganger' by Curve over and over again. I prefer music at
that speed. I wonder what the new Pale Saints album sounds like also....
I don't believe in using pauses for anything since it wastes time.

A great deal of writers/artists make stuff up as they go
along, at least in first drafts. Why is it so hard to comprehend? They
write a first draft, as things go on they connect things they didn't
see at first, have a few inspirations with quirky bits of plot that
make it all seem so tightly wound (kludging, someone called it) and then
stream-line it in later drafts. Except in TV you don't always get a
second or third draft, and the plumbing still shows, sometimes.....

Madchen Amick in Sleepwalkers carolo@cse.ucsc.edu (Carol Osterbrock) 1992-04-20 13:58
I saw Stephen King's new movie "Sleepwalkers" over the weekend, or
maybe it is Sleepwalker. Madchen Amick is the female lead. She
was good, although the character was pretty stupid for somebody who
was supposed to be so smart, but then I guess I always think that
at horror movies. If people were smart, it would be a pretty boring
movie.

It is quite gory, and has a little gratuitous sex, and some of it is
wildly funny. I think it is partly making fun of the genre. I've
never seen anybody stabbed to death with a corncob before. (I don't
think that's a spoiler -- no characters mentioned.)

Shelly appears all through the movie, and she is OK, although as I
said the character is pretty lame. I wouldn't really recommend paying
huge amounts of money to see it, although if you know somebody who
is kinda squeamish and you want to get to know them better ;-), there
are scenes where they will probably jump and grab your arm. I liked
it a lot, because of the cats. I won't say any more about that subject,
but if you like cats you will like the premise of the movie.

Disclaimer -- I'm not a movie reviewer, and I'm not a Stephen King
fanatic, so I can't compare any of his other stuff with this. I was
surprised to see Madchen Amick featured, so I figured I'd post something
about the movie.

I know I'm responding late to this but it brings up one of my major
gripes with this bboard -- and the very reason why I don't read it as
often anymore.

Here's my two cents --

Your searches for meaning in David Lynch's stuff are absurd!!
The man puts neat images together to play with reality. It doesn't mean
anything.
It just looks and sounds neat.
He does this stuff to mess with your heads -- that's all.
You will not find the answers to life, the universe and everything in
David Lynch.
What you will find is interesting, entertaining, fun stuff. Albeit a
little weird, but just fun.
Let's use this bboard to discuss how neat David Lynch is rather than
dissect his work for meaning. Once you start searching your own life for
meaning rather than someone else's, we'll all be happier.

Thank you for listening to my two cents--

Raelin

By the way, I thought Wild at Heart was much cooler than Blue Velvet.

Was this TP broadcast? smay@hpdmd48.boi.hp.com (Scott Smay) 1992-04-20 14:31
I rented what was advertised as the Twin Peaks pilot at the local video store.
This was supposed to be enhanced with sequences cut from the broadcast version.

I thought I had seen all the episodes, but now I am wondering since there
was mind-blowing stuff I had never seen. Could someone tell me if this stuff
was broadcast?

1. Mike shooting Bob in the hospital basement.

2. Cooper, Laura Palmer and the dwarf in the red room of the B?W? Lodge
25 years later, Cooper looking quite aged.

The worst thing about watching this was realizing (again) how empty
the tube is since TP.

What fun would there be if Madchen walked away from Brian Krause after

> >wildly funny. I think it is partly making fun of the genre. I've

Yup, that's the way I took it. I thought it was great! It seemed
like it never really took itself seriously. Alice Krige firing shots
at the police cars and the cars exploding, the corn cob bit, the crack
about the wind, "It was *not* the fuckin wind!"

> >never seen anybody stabbed to death with a corncob before. (I don't
> >think that's a spoiler -- no characters mentioned.)

It's in the commercials, but I guess it's a little unclear about exactly
what it was...

> >it a lot, because of the cats. I won't say any more about that subject,
> >but if you like cats you will like the premise of the movie.

Hm, I thought that those who liked cats wouldn't like it since
not all the cats are treated real nice in the movie. *8^)
Although I thought it was cool that the cats were the good guys in
the movie (I went into the movie thinking the cats were the bad guys,
looks like it in the newspaper ads).

Was anyone else bothered by the fact that Madchen bites her lower lip
in nearly every scene she has? Also by the unnecessary panning in all
the establishing shots?

Seems to me that people would generally not like this (as can be seen
by the 40% drop in the box-office in the second weekend) but I think a
lot of die-hard King fans would like it. Some people are taking the
movie too seriously and are finding that it sucks. If you like horror
movies and want a little fun with it, then I recommend Sleepwalkers!
It's pretty fun to catch all the cameos... Mark Hamill in the beginning,
King, Clive Barker, and Tobe Hooper at the crime site, Joe Dante and
John Landis at the film lab... Also, Diane Delano, Officer Semansky
from Northern Exposure.

TP References: Cowboy Junkies jblum@lucy.umd.edu (Jon Blum) 1992-04-20 16:11
A while back folks were posting references to TP that turned up in the
outside world. Well, it might just be me, but the Cowboy Junkies' latest
album seems to be full of them.

For those who haven't heard them, the Junkies' are the kind of band that
could get a gig at the Twin Peaks Roadhouse -- blues/country/rock, very
soft and melancholy, and VERY atmospheric. Their lead singer, Margo Timmins,
even sounds like Julee Cruise on occasion, and at a recent concert I saw
that her brother Michael (a guitarist) looks exactly like Harold Smith,
right down to staying hidden in the shadows on stage for most of the show.

A lot of their songs deal with small towns and vaguely Peaks-ish moodiness,
but there are two bits on their new album, "Black-Eyed Man", that really
bring TP to mind. The end of their gorgeous love song, "If You Were The
Woman And I Was The Man", fades into a very Audrey-ish clarinet solo, and
another song, "This Street, That Man, This Life" basically sums up the
entire Twin Peaks ethos in three minutes and fourteen seconds. Here
are the lyrics -- hope you enjoy them as much as I did. Great album.

This street holds its secrets like a cobra holds its kill
This street minds its business like a jailer minds his jail
That house there is haunted, that door's a portal to hell
This street holds its secrets very well

That man wears his skin like a dancer wears her veils
That man stalks his victim like a cancer stalks a cell
That man's soul has left him, his heart's as deadly as a rusty nail
That man sheds his skin like a veil

Lord, you play a hard game, you know we follow every rule,
Then you take the one thing we thought we'd never lose
All I ask is if she's with you please keep her warm and safe
And if it's in your power please purge the memory of this place

This life holds its secrets like a seashell holds the sea
Soft and distant, calling, like a fading memory
This life has its victories, but its defeats tear so viciously
This life holds its secrets like the sea

Yes she does look like Laura Palmer, and yes, it was a great movie. As
always the book was far better, but then again we all have the best
movie production teams and equipment right upstairs and real world
producers have to make do with what is available to them in order to
simulate the movie in their heads. BTW Frank Herbert liked what was
done, perhaps not the final piece, but the scenes that were in the
film were apparently close to what he envisioned Dune to be. If you
liked the Dune series, the I would highly suggest reading "The White
Plague" by Frank Herbert, it is as good if not better in some respects
than Dune.

I'm glad that you wrote this, I feel the same way. In fact, I'm sur-
prised that his movies make as much sense as they do, considering the
fact that they started out as random notes on index cards. Think about
Eraserhead, I'm sure 90% of that started out as Bob's Big Boy napkins.
Anyway, I do not overanalyze his movies, I just let them take me where
Lynch wants me to go.

NEXP (UK), wierd Twin Peaks piss take ? neilp@cs.hw.ac.uk (Neil Postlethwaite) 1992-04-21 02:03
Just caught I think the 5th episode of Northern Exposure in the UK,
NEXP (UK). The one when Joel's fiance Elaine comes to visit Sicely at the time
of the 'flu epidemic.

Was there any purpose behind the Twin Peaks sketch or was it just a
piss take for all the people who compare NEXP to Peaks ???

Personally I think NEXP gets better and better each week. I love it.

It was, as you say, a piss-take. Twin Peaks was very much alive and
sicking when that episode of NEXP went out. If I remember right it
was broadcast in the summer between seasons of TP.

I've noticed that a few people have been listing vague TP musical
references but I haven't seen anybody mention the Pooh Sticks' latest
album: _Great White Wonder_.

The last song on the album, "When Sunny Gets Blue", has a line that
goes something like "Sometimes her arms bend backwards and ...".
In the liner notes that come with the CD they point out that this is
indeed a Twin Peaks reference.

This CD is on the Sympathy For The Record Industry label and can be
picked up rather cheaply. They have just been signed to BMG in the US
and this album will most likely be re-issued on BMG this fall at much
higher price - so buy it now.

This was my favourite album of 1991, followed by the Pixes, Bongwater,
King Missile and Ween.

I try not to compare NEXP and Twin Peaks for my own sanity.
I find that I enjoy NEXP much more if I ignore any type of similarities.
I found that I was creating simlarities because I was craving for TP to
return.

NEXP is a great show on its own. Regarding the TP piss take. I don't
blame anyone at NEXP for doing it. I think they do a great job and any
TP comparisons belittle their work.

Hi there,
Ive just noticed what appears to be a mistake in TP, although
being TP maybe it isnt.

When Donna is in the attic and is looking at her birth certificate,
the one that doesnt have the father's name on it, the section that has
the mothers name is for the mothers maiden name. On the certificate Donna's
mother's maiden name is Eileen Hayward.

What I want to know is, is this a mistake or is something funny
going on here?

The name of the song is "Go", and the artist is Moby. It apparently

Well IMHO there are several explanations for this.
1. It is a mistake, hey it happens to everyone.
2. The first names of some characters were not well known especially a
character that wsa in few scenes, such as Donnas mom, so
perhaps the writiers figured that people might have trouble
with Eileen Foo listed as a name and used Eileen Hayward
thinking that anyone who didn't connect the Eileen to Donnas
mom would at least connect it to the name Hayward and realize
something was up.
3. Eileen was really Wil (Doc) Haywards sister or mother his wife
just coincidentally has the same first name, and there is
something really strange going on in Twin Peaks. The Ben thing
was all imagined by Donna who misinterpreted the actions of
Ben feeling sorry for selling Donnas moms legs to the
Ghostwood project as indicative of Ben illigitimate fathership
of one child named Donna Hayward who was actually not the
Donna we know but her twin sister who was named Theresa Banks
by her foster parents.
Um, got a little carried away. You decide if you agree or whatever you
do decide or not decide or whatever.
BTW After Skidmore Food Service coffee has been mixed in a solution of
100 parts water to one part "Coffee" you can still hold it upside
down and have nothing leak out of the cup. Lynch Frost used it in the
finale of Twin Peaks, but the food service petitioned to have their
name removed from the credits.

How much the cast knew about the plot johnatwe@midiline.la.ca.us (John atwell) 1992-04-24 18:01
I remember reading in a magazine interview with Dana Ashbrook (Bobby
Briggs), that Dana was playing a scene in a sympathetic way, and Lynch
told him that the take on Bobby Briggs was that he was actually very
selfish and self centered, not necessarily sympathetic. Which came about
because the actors only got scripts (not like having a "bible" of the
history of the characters like they do on other soaps or quasi-soaps).
Later on in the interview, Dana expresses his surprise when he reads
Laura Palmer's diary and finds out his character shot and (probably)
killed someone during a botched drug deal.

Actors are always searching for clue to the character in a script. In
the case of TP, sometime those clues to character were not readily
available. That's what you get when you write a show that "is about
secrets".

Also, Russ Tamblyn had a different take on his character. He just
thought that Jacoby was eccentric, whereas Lynch & Frost thought of him
as a dark character. Some of this has to do with the way TV waters down
a character after a while, because you can only be interested in an
unsympathetic character for so long. Look at shows like Buffalo Bill,
which simply couldn't go on for very long because the main character was
a creep! Not really sympathetic at all. Archie Bunker eventually became
likeable if ignorant, but in the beginning he was VERY unlikeable.

This is why FWWM will be interesting to me: what are the unlikeable parts
of the characters. Major Briggs was an authoritarian in the first couple
of episodes, then he became a hero. Will he be authoritarian in FWWM, or
a hero, or (most likely) both?

IMHO, the true character (the one Lynch/Frost envisioned) will be
presented in the movie. This is not to say that the actors aren't
allowed their craft - far from it. But TV and the wide screen have
different ways of delineating character, different focuses, different
slants - and I think Frost knows this (& probably Lynch, too).

Also, it points out to me that a fair amount of the plot details WERE
created at the last moment. Not ALL of the details, of course, maybe not
even the majority, but a fair amount.

Congratulations, you have just entered the wonderful world of the Euro-version.
This was a special extended edition of the pilot prepared for video release
in Europe, with an ending added on so it could stand on its own in case the
rest of the series was never made / released on video. I think we're in the
middle of a debate right now over when the extra scenes were filmed and
whether they were intended to be used in the regular series at the time...
and they _were_ used as Cooper's dream sequence at the end of the second
regular episode.

> >1. Mike shooting Bob in the hospital basement.

This bit was talked about at the beginning of the third hour-long episode, in
which Cooper tells Truman his dream, but it isn't actually shown. That entire
MIKE / BOB sequence was Swiss-cheesed down to a few shots of MIKE ("We lived
among the people... I think you say, convenience store...") and BOB ("You
may think I've gone insane... but I promise. I will kill again!") in the
dream montage.

> >2. Cooper, Laura Palmer and the dwarf in the red room of the B?W? Lodge

Barring a couple of very minor cuts, this was shown intact as the conclusion
to the dream. It was our first sighting of the Little Man From Another Place.

Actually, it's the other way around. It's fairly common for two-hour series
pilots to be marketed overseas as movies, and the same was intended for the
TP pilot. The only problem was that the TP pilot set up a mystery and never
solved it by the end of the movie. In order to be able to market it overseas
as a one-shot movie, Lynch/Frost was contractually obligated to provide an
ending. They did so, and this extended version of the pilot was marketed as
a direct-to-video release before the series itself was sold to any overseas
markets.

No, this was never used in the series. Nor were the scenes of Lucy and
Andy in Lucy's apartment.

} 2. Cooper, Laura Palmer and the dwarf in the red room of the B?W? Lodge
} 25 years later, Cooper looking quite aged.

This was used as the very end of Cooper's Dream in episode #1002, as was
parts of the One-Armed Man's speech to Cooper in the hospital morgue and
Bob's speech down in the basement.

If you have a copy on tape of Episode #1003, pay attention to Cooper's
description to Harry and Lucy of his dream from the night before. It
doesn't actually match what was seen by the audience in the previous
episode, but it *does* match what occurs in the added material in the
extended version of the pilot.

Mr. Bungle samples a great portion of the conversation in Blue Velvet
among Frank, Ben, and Raymond ("Ya want me ta pour it?"). There are
additional samples from BV of Dorthy screaming "I'm falling!" and of
Jeffery crying later on the album. Then of course there's the chorus
"Don't you f-cking look at me!" and "Hit me!" in the middle of "My Ass
is on Fire".

Mr. Bungle is fronted by Faith No More vocalist Mike Patton and greatly
influenced by their producer, John Zorn (composer/saxaphonist). Mr.
Bungle fans may want to check out Zorn's "Naked City" band, or vice versa.

I apologize for contributing to one of the tangents this group is often

Sooting Script to TP: FWWM st911277@pip.cc.brandeis.edu 1992-04-26 12:31
Well I know y'all have been waiting for weeks, but I'm sorry. This is the
first chance I've gotten to finally post some info. I have in front of
me the shooting draft to "Twin Peaks 'Fire Walk With Me, Teresa Banks and
the Last Seven Days of Laura Palmer." I'm now willing to share some of
it with you. Ahead will be major spoilers, so beware. Stop reading now
unless you are so hooked on the whole Twin PEaks thing that you cannot
wait a few measly months to see the whole movie for yourself.
By the way, some of you have asked where I got the script. I got
it at a store in Harvard Square, Cambridge, MA. I'm not exactly sure
how legal this is (I can't see how it could be legal) so I think I'll
refrain from revealing the name of the store. OK, let's rock.

Here we go:
OK well the script is divided into three parts, like I've read in previous
postings on the network. The first section is medium length (pp. 1-40).
It involves the death of Teresa Banks. Opening scene: "Teresa Banks' body
wrapped in plastic floating through Hells Canyon, drifting along in Wind
River." Then it jumps to Gordon Cole and two new FBI officers, Agent Chester
Desmond and Sam Stanley. Here is a really cool scene involving communication
between the agents using a code. Stanley and Desmond go to investigate
Banks' murder. Here they have trouble with the local lawmen (which was
probably what prompted Cooper to have his talk with Truman in the first
episode about who is really in charge when the bureau is called in). It
starts out OK but then gets weird. The ring comes back into play, there
is a mound of dirt, a golf ball (Leland liked golf) and finally one of the
agents disapppears, which is why Cooper is brought in.
Here we switch to Cooper. He is talking with Diane, but it is unclear
whether we actually see her because she doesn't say anything (Man I hope we
get to see her). Now it gets really weird. There is an agent named Phillip
Jeffries, and from what I can tell, he is a time-space traveler (possibly
the character that David Bowie will play). He tells about a meeting above
a convenience store. Then it switches to the meeting. Everyone is there:
"In the foreground the Man from Another Place (Mike) and Bob sit at a
formica table. Behind them on plastic torn chairs huddle Mrs. Tremond and
her grandson. Two Bigh Woodsmen with full beards sit quietly." It says
the whole scene is subtitled, so I assume we have more of the backwords
talking. They talk strangely for a while and then Mike and Bob say "Fire
Walk With Me" and then a circel of fire appears. Bob crawls through it into
the Red Room and Mike yells and leaps in after him.
After this, the second and biggest part comes on, the last week of
Laura Palmer (pp. 40-124). I haven't read all of this part, but I'll
summarize what I know for you. Cooper was right. Laura did have a bad
habit. It turns out that that habit was very very bad. In every scene
she takes a line or two of cocaine and any pills she can get her hands on.
Donna helps Laura with her homework, Bobby loves Laura, Laura sees James
behind Bobby's back, and Mike is going out with Donna. Laura finds pages
missing from her secret diary. She panicks and goes to see Harold Smith.
She tells him she thinks Bob took the pages and that Bob has been having
he since she was 12. Laura says Bob wants to be her or he will kill her.
Next day: Mrs. Tremond and her grandson help Laura. She goes home
and finds Bob looking for her diary in her room. SHe runs outside. Minutes
later Leland comes out of the house. That night, a picture given to Laura
as a present from Mrs. Tremond magically reveals the Red Room. In it
Cooper tells Laura not to take the ring, Teresa's ring, which has symbols
identical to those of Owl Cave. We come out of the picture and see
Laura in bed. She wakes and looks next to her. "She discovers Annie
Blackburn lying in bed with her." She has blood around her mouth and she
says, "My name is Annie. I've been with Laura and Dale. The good Dale is
in the lodge and he can't leave. Write it in your diary." Aniie disappears
and the ring is in Laura's hand.
Next day: James says he missed Laura last night. Leo abuses Shelly
and talks to Bobby about a drug deal. Jacques Renault enters the deal.
Laura and Donna hitch up with a few truckers. They see Ronette Pulaski
and Bob's voice tells Laura that Donna is going to get into the situation.
Laura is afraid for Donna and tries to get her out of there.
Next day: Ed and Nadine. Truman and Josie. Donna and Laura discuss
last night. Leland and Gerard Gerard says to Laura, "It's him. It's your
father," but she can't hear him because Leland is making so much noise with
his car. Leland has flashback to when he was involved with Teresa with
Flesh World Magazine. Teresa figures out that Leland is Laura's father
(probably why he killed her). Laura has flashback and begins to put the
pieces together. Leland has flashback to when he killed Teresa Banks.
Next day: Johnny's birthday party. Ben gives cocaine to Laura, and
Laura says she would do more than just kiss him for it. Night: Bobby and
Laura driving and snorting. They go into woods to pick up drugs. A
deputy from Deer Meadow brings the cocaine for Jacques. Laura grabs the
coke, the deputy pulls out his gun, and Bobby shoots him.
Next day: Bobby discovers that the coke is really laxative. Laura
talks to Jacoby. Night: Sarah is drugged - sees white horse. Bob enters
Laura's room and puts hand between her legs. Bob turns into Leland.
She screams and passes out.
Next day: "Last morning": At breakfast table Leland asks Laura what
is wrong. Laura says to stay away. "He knows she knows and he knows
what he has to do." "Last night": Laura says she hates asparagus at dinner.
She goes to see Bobby. Laura goes home and snorts a line or three. James
calls at 9:30. He comes by. Leland sees Laura jump on his bike. They
drive. Laura screams with agony, says "James I love you" and runs away at
the corner of Sparkwood and 21. Laura runs to Packard Logging Road and
meets Jacques, Leo, and Ronette. They go to Jacques' cabin. Jacques
ties Laura and Ronette up. Both are half-naked. Waldo is screeching.
Jacques stradles Laura and hurts her. Leo puts a One Eyed Jacks $1000
poker chip in her mouth. Leland appears. Jacques decks Leo. Leland
grabs bottle and knocks out Jacques. Leo takes off. Leland rapes Ronette.
Laura gets hysterical. Log Lady is off in woods listening. "She hears]
distant screams. The camera moves down her leg to reveal her tattoo, beet
red and burning." Philip Gerard runs like a madman up to Jacques' cabin.
Leland marches the girls through woods. Gerard arrives too late. Leland
and girls arrive at train car. Leland wraps twine around Laura's arm,
bending her arms back. Laura sees herself turn into Bob. Laura says, "
"No, you have to kill me...No you can't have me. Kill me." Gerard arrives
at train car. Ronette opens the door a little, but then she is hit and
flies over Gerard and knocked unconscious. Gerard listens to the sounds
of murder inside the car. Laura screams. Knife enters flesh. Bob screams.
Bloody knife goes through the air. Leland screams. Gerard laughs and says,
"That's his own daughter you're killing." Leland/Bob lowers the plastic
shrouded Laura into the river. Leland stumbles into Glastonbury Grove.
He enters the Red Room. Gerard and MFAP sit facing him. Leland stops and
divides. "One half becomes Bob - opaque. The other half floats up and
becomes Leland - transparent. Bob reaches up and grab's Leland's wound.
Bob heals Leland's wound. Gerard and TMFAP speak together "Bob, you're
not going home without me. I want all my garmonbozia (corn)."
Well that's the end of the second part. Here's the bad news: The
third part, the one we've all been waiting for, is 3 pages long. I was
really pissed when I saw that. I can only hope that as the filming
evolves, they will add length to it. Well anyway, here it is. Annie is
brought on stretcher to emergency room. TMFAP says to Cooper in Red Room,
"Is it future? Or is it past?...Do you know who I am?...I am The Arm...And
I sound like this..." He makes an Indian whooping noise.
Cooper: Where is the ring?
MFAP: Someone else has it now.
Cooper: That would indicate that it's the future.
MFAP: The later events have never been kept a secret.
Cooper: Where am I? And how can I leave?
MFAP: You are here and there is no place to go...But home!
Hospital Room-night
Annie: My name is Annie. I've been with Laura and Dale. The good Dale is
in the lodge and he can't leave. Write it in your diary.
The nurse listens and takes Teresa's/Laura's ring off Annie's finger. She
leaves and puts the ring on herself.
Hotel Room - night. Doc and Truman watch bathroom door.
Truman: Coop...Coop...
Doc: Cooper are you alright?
No response. Truman breaks open door.
Cooper lies on floor Mirroe is shattered with blood over it and sink. Cooper
smiles strangely.
Cooper: I slipped and hit my head on the mirror. The glass broke as it
struck my head. It struck me as funny, Harry. Do you understand me, Harry,
it struck me as funny.
Doc: You are going right back to bed.
Cooper: But I haven't brushed my teeth yet. (Smiles)
Black Lodge/Red Room - Laura is sitting in a chair. As the end credits
begin...
We move in to see that Laura is sitting in Cooper's lap in the same chair.

The End. Well I hope y'all enjoyed that. If anyone has any questions or
would like to discuss the implications of the script, I'm here. Also,
I am only reporting on the shooting draft. I know a lot could change before
the final prduct is made.

Has anyone a name-list of the sequels? pikoehn@faui09.informatik.uni-erlangen.de (Philipp Koehn) 1992-04-27 03:26
I've got video-copies of the twin-peaks sequels (sequals?), but
these are in quite a mess (disturbed?). So, I'd be very happy
to have a list of the names of the sequals (perhaps even the
German translated names... - okay, okay, just an idea). Could one
of you fanatic freaks be so kind to mail me such a (?) thing?

Please?

Perhaps some interesseting news for you:
Twin Peaks was broadcasted in Germany in autumn '91 by RTL Plus
(Radio Television Luxemburg, the biggest (of five) private TV-stations
in the reunited fatherland (<- sorry for this pathetic patrotism, it
was not intended to sound that Nazi-like)), of course fully synchronisized
to a verstaendliche Sprache. But, after few sequels, the rival
TV-station SAT 1 (the second biggest) announced in its Videotext
who the murder was. This gave some trouble and was broadly seen as
an silly act of unfairness. Anyway, Twin-Peaks was not a major
success here in Germany. Perhaps, because it was broadcasted
friday evening, maybe some stuff was too specific American.

Okay, I hope my English teacher will never read this letter

heartthrob for Cooper in TP, and the protagonists' mother was played by the
same actress that played Mrs. Palmer. (Hell of a time with names, here)
Anyway, I was just wondering how many links there are to TP in this movie
that anyone knows of. The style of the movie definitely seems to pay homage to
the style made famous by David Lynch.

In my opinion, these scenes detracted from the pilot as I remember it on
TV. I'm actually sorry that I erased my taped-from-TV copy of the pilot,
commercials and all. If I remember correctly, the original pilot ended
with a hand (Dr. Jacoby's, we later find out) pulling Laura's necklace out
of the ground where James and Donna had just hidden it. This scene was
removed from the Euro-version, and so leaves unexplained how Dr. Jacoby
gets hold of it later on. I also thought the first ending -- with the
hand grabbing the necklace -- was much more suspenseful.

So am I remembering this right, were these scenes in "our" version of the
pilot?

Yep, you remember correctly, the original pilot included intercut shots of
a flashlight moving through the trees and a gloved hand taking the necklace.

I'm not sure if that was the "original" ending of the pilot though. I think
someone who posted the shooting script said that Sarah's vision was going to
be of BOB -- possibly the incredibly eerie scene where she sees him hiding
behind Laura's bed in the extended version. But I agree, it was a mistake
to leave out that scene in the video release. It served as a hook leading
into the next episode -- which was probably why they left it out, because
the pilot was supposed to be a self-contained movie.

Which brings to mind another idea. Lynch/Frost and company could make another
bundle off of TP fans selling either the original pilot, OR an extended
edition of episode #1002, with the chopped-up dream sequence restored to its
original length -- including the stuff that's talked about in #1003 but never
seen. I know the distribution deal on the Euroversion blocks the first
option, but does anyone know why they couldn't do a "director's cut" of the
episode?...

Yeah I think you will find that "a cup of coffee" was in TP and it also made a
quick cameo in WAH.

} ground where James and Donna had just hidden it.

Correct.

} This scene was removed from the Euro-version, and so leaves unexplained
} how Dr. Jacoby gets hold of it later on.

Except that that point isn't the least bit relevant. The extra footage in
the Euroversion was intended to make it self-contained, i.e. there *isn't*
any "later on". It was marketed as a one-shot direct-to-video movie, and
was released in Europe at about the same time as the first season of the
series was being shown here in the US.

When the series was sold to foreign markets, it was led off with the same
broadcast version of the pilot that we saw here.

I think the Euroversion doesn't "work" for many reasons, but not because
of how it doesn't jibe with the rest of the series. First, there are
numerous things brought up in the film (as in the original broadcast
pilot) that are later explained away in the series, but because, as I
said, there is no "later" with respect to the Euroversion, these things
are never resolved. Secondly, the ending is highly kludged and *looks*
it. Everything builds up slowly, Cooper comes into town and starts
detecting, and doesn't get very far when everything is basically dumped
into his lap all at once. Beacuse of this, the pacing is all bent out
of shape, and so on.

As I've said before, the 30 seconds worth of footage involving Jacoby
finding the necklace is the only part of the original broadcast pilot
that doesn't appear in the Euroversion. Up until the point where Sarah
Palmer wakes up from her vision, the two versions are absolutely identical.

I am new to this news group, so I did not see the original list, but if you
are going to the North Bend area, there is a map available at a Hallmark store
in NB. Once you come off the I-90 freeway and come to the intersection in frontof the Mar-T (Double "R") Cafe, park. Within sight is the Hallmark store, so just walk to it. They have various tee-shirts and memorabilia available in
addition to two variations of the map- and feel free to talk to just about any-
one in the store about the show- during the US haitus, they had a stack of signed petitions that was about six inches thick that they mailed to the stationheadquarters-it's fan central! I can tell you that, outside of the Mar-T, the
intersection there is where you'll find the swinging stoplight, the mounain thatis in view [Mt. Si] is the real "twin peaks", although you'd have to drive all
the way around them to see the show view point. The high school in town is
Twin Peaks High, and of course, Snoqualamie falls and the Salish Inn are where you'll find the magnificent falls and "Great Northern". Sorry I couldn't be of more help. If you want the address of the Hallmark, send me a note via e-mail- I have it, but not with me right now- they will ship you anything you want, and
their prices are reasonable [with the possible exception of the trading card]. As I said, it's fan central. Better yet, move to Washington- it's beautiful,
if a little wierd- they didn't film TP and NE there for nothing!!!!!

Grace Zabrisky (?) also appeared in gus van sant's 'my own private idaho.'

As far as paying homage to lynch...huh?
The fuck?
The 'cowboy' style seems van sants little thumbprint and I severely doubt he's paying anything to lynch.

'Parents' neilp@cs.hw.ac.uk (Neil Postlethwaite) 1992-04-30 11:59
Just watched on video a film that was broadcast the other Friday here in
the UK. It was called 'Parents' and was shown as part of Channel 4's
horror season.

'Parents' was directed by Bob Balaban and I was considering watching it
and decided to give it 20 mins to live or die. When the start credits
rolled Orchestral Music by Angelo Badalamenti scrolled by. As I'm a big
Twin Peaks/David Lynch/Angelo Badalamenti fan I perked up and decided
to tape the film for later consumption.

Upon watching it I felt the director Bob Balaban seemed to be very influenced
by David Lynch, more specifically Blue Velvet. The music and atmosphere
helped this aswell (Angelo Badalamenti does almost all the music for Twin
Peaks aswell as David Lynch's movies. Blue Velvet, Wild At Heart).

Has anybody else seen this film and do they have any comments or flames to
make ???

The blurb in 'The Guardian' newspaper described 'Parents' as:

Parents (1989): Directed by Bob Balaban.

What is the secret behind the enormous quantities of red meat always on the
cosy dinner table of a typically Oldsmobile post-war American family ?
Bob Balaban's sinister and subversive black comedy from 1989 may be too
grisly for you to grin at, but it certainly skewers you attention.

I found the humour, the tacky 50's decor and general style very like
David Lynch (cf the beginning/closing scenes of Blue Velvet esp.).

Northern Exposure -> Twin Peaks niklasn@syma.sussex.ac.uk (Nik Newark plc) 1992-05-01 05:46
Apologies for posting this (as it has almost certainly been discussed before)
but on an episode of Northern Exposure the other week (where everyone gets
Russian Flu), there is a sequence where Holling, Fleischman & Elaine are near
a telescope by a waterfall, and a pastiche of the TP theme is playing.
Then a sort of swing rhythm starts, augmented by a walking bass line, and
vibraphone part (a la Audreys Dance), and then it turns into Twin Peaks!

Holling offers Fleischman & Elaine some coffee & Donuts, then Fleischman says
"How about some Cherry Pie". and then they look through the telescope...

"Whats that lady carrying?"
"Looks like...a log!"

Then everything returns to normality!

Have there been many other TP sequences, or have I been just too wrapped up in
myself to notice?

Re: 'Parents' sexkittn@dcs.qmw.ac.uk (Caldwell) 1992-05-01 09:58
I too thought Parents very Lynchian, which is not always a positive thing
for me. I loved TP but hate most of the movies, and Parents was more like
the latter, particularly in the enervating long-awkward-pause stakes (these
also irritated me in the final ep of TP).

It was a very odd film, combining (as Lynch often does) an obsessive sense
of dangerous undercurrents in seemingly sedate settings with a rather
saccharine view of suburbia which only seems partly ironic in intent.

The music was *great*, and Sandy Dennis was wonderful, but in the end it
didn't seem quite extreme or grotesque enough to achieve its ambitions.

Want to buy (commercial) Twin Peak videos johan@dutnak2.tudelft.nl (Johan de Haas) 1992-05-01 10:53
I saw Twin Peaks in the Netherlands up to #11 or so. Now I'm living
in Venezuela and desparately want to see the rest. Believe it or not, I
still don't know who killed Laura Palmer.

Basically, I want to buy a set of video tapes of all Twin Peaks issues
in the U.S.A., e.g. through mail order. Can someone tell me if they are

available, if so where and how much they would approximately cost.

Any info is welcome (please respond by mail)

Nope, that was the only one. There may have been other
oblique references to TP, but that was the only one that
occupied an entire scene. I remember how much I liked
that bit when I first saw it--TP was still on at the time,
of course. It was one of many things that hooked me on
Northern Exposure.

Maybe you should stick to Arnold (McBain) Schwarzeneger
movies. Lots of killing, noise, chase scenes, etc...
Just your cup of tea, or should I say, keg of beer?

I guess you missed the 'action scenes' in Blue Velvet.
I suppose that they weren't 'obvious' enough for you.

Yes, Twin Peaks was a real disappointment, after the
killer was revealed. But the dialogue, or, as you put
it 'too many words' (duh) had nothing to do with it.
There was plenty of exciting, interesting dialogue in
T.P. during the first season and the first half
of the second season. You won't find very many 'chase scenes'
in those episodes, yet, somehow, they managed to be extremely
entertaining - imagine that? The problem with the last part
of the series was that they simply ran out of new, good ideas.
But, it happens. Even to the best. It was too bad that they
didn't know when to stop, though. They 'ran it into the
     ground', to quote 'Bart Simpson'.

     I believe that's 4/33 - and no, it doesn't sound like he
     would be, does it?

I don't know why people are bothered by silence. Empty-
headed, I guess; if they don't have the radio or television
on, they're lost. Thoughts are alien to them.
