Two thoughts come to mind. I've heard that Twin Peak's ratings were skewed
the same way that sporting event ratings are skewed. People watch it in
groups and apparently (although I find this a bit hard to believe) Nielson
does not do a good job taking this into account. The logical application
of this to duane's idea is that not everyone would by the tape. Piracy is,
of course, always going to be at least a mild problem, but even if the intent
were not to pirate, it still seems like people would watch it in groups and
then not have to pay. They couldn't legally own a copy of the episode, but
it would be perfectly legal to watch it. So 10 people get together and each
buy the episode and watch it together AS SOON as it arrives?

So I think piracy and group watching present real problems to this idea.

Very interesting idea. But Pay Per View is a little cheaper in the
distribution overhead. If NBC is successful in selling the Olympics on PPV
for $100-$150 per household, then we will no doubt see things like this
occur.

Access Guide Character Bios giovin@medr0.ecs.umass.edu (Rocky J Giovinazzo) 1991-05-28 18:40
FYI, here are character bios from the margins of the TP Access Guide:

JOSIE PACKARD-- Virgo, Josie Packarad hails from Hong Kong, though Twin
Peaks has provided her more adventure than she ever imagines possible, or
probably. As the youngest female executive and owner of the Packard Mill,
the wife of lately-reappearing Andrew Packard [TP residents know that Andrew
isn't dead?!] is keely self-motivated. Born September 2, 1962,
Josie admits to troubling thoughts and occasional doubts about the men in her
life. BESTS: "The sound of the water, White Tail roaring, when I feel like
a rushing torrent-falling." Also, the Blue Pine Lodge "when Pete is there
to make me laugh" and travel to mysterious places.
BENJAMIN "Ben" HORNE-- Born August 4, 1940. In a world lacking in
virility and in need of a hero, Twin Peaks is honored to have Ben Horne as
one of its most prominent citizens. A Leo, this former President of SAE at
Stanford University-- where his nickname was "Peacock" -- pursues with gusto
everything life offers. A firm believer in cross-cultural relations and
the restorative power of song, he supports joint U.S.-Canadian enterprises
and often travels north in pursuit of things. BESTS: "Twin Peaks'
incredible potential, farsighted citizens, and location, location, location."
CATHERINE MARTELL see Packard-- Born November 4, 1940 under Scorpio
as well as a half moon, and the lifeless gaze of several stuffed animals
murdered by her sporting father, Catherine graduated from our high school with
a remarkable command of French, Japanese and the Kama Sutra.
DALE BARTHOLOMEW "Coop" COOPER-- Born April 19, 1954. An FBI
Agent and Aries, might well have been a magician or mystic had he not scored
a perfect 100 on his Eagle Scout marksmanship test, after which his thinking
took a decidely 'legalistic' turn. Unable to escape the memory of a tragic
incident in his recent past, Coop like jelly doughnuts and a good cup of Joe.
BESTS: "The whole remarkable town, the whole thing; I mean all of it"
Also, the Theosophist Society.
LAWRENCE "Doc" JACOBY-- Born Januar 30, 1934. Abjuring the Logical
Positivist school of philosophy by turning instead to Spiderman and
the _National Equirer_ while growing up in Hawaii, Aquarian "Doc" balances
the right and left sides of his brain by wearing rose and aqua colored
glasses. BESTS: The awesome number of dysfunctional families in Twin
Peaks and "my mailman, who argues with each envelope, analyzes the suitability
of the stamp, a real case."
THE LOG LADY-- [Why didn't they write MARGARET "The log lady" surname?]
Born under achingly clear and brilliant skies on an unknown date,
The Log Lady is a self-proclaimed Libra and graduate of Twin Peaks High
School. After further matriculation at Evergreen State University as a
Forestry and Wildlife Management major, she met a fire fighter and the rest
is history. When not teaching Fire Prevention and ballroom dancing,
The Log Lady ministers to the sick and the sick at heart. "My strength,"
she explains, "is in my forearms." BEST: Bear Claws [are they really
bear claws?] and broccoli, long walks in the woods and listening
to the mysterious knowledge of her log. Also, Glastonberry Grove.
TOMMY "the Hawk" HILL-- Born September 16, 1950. A Virgo, Hawk
is a unique combination of pragmatist and mystic. Son of a Zuni Shaman,
he admits to being intolerant of those who would destroy the earth's
beauty and allows that he did, indeed, run the wrong way in that final
game of the '68 season. BESTS: Timber games, grass between your toes
and cool, clear water.
PETE MARTELL-- Born June 28, 1934, Pete demonstrated at a remarkably
early age an affinity for moving small objects. After the family's
cutlery was retrieved from various rooms in the house, Pete was given a
chessboard and the rest is history. Pete is also the most uxorious man
in Twin Peaks and can tie a Duncan Loop in the dark. BESTS: The pentannual
Passion Play; a steelhead rising to a Green Butt Skunk.
ED HURLEY-- Born October 26, 1950. A most unlikely Scorpio and
unaware of it, Big Ed is convinced his birthday is October 26 and he's right.
He also is right about anything having to do with American-built engines
though the vagaries of human nature generally baffle and elude him. A
graduate of Twin Peaks High, he enjoys a good cup of coffee and an intimate
conversation at the Double R Diner. BESTS: Beaver Fritters, the
Passion Play, the odor of crankcase oil, the Packard Timber Games.
NORMA JENNINGS-- Born September 30, 1950. After graduating from
Twin Peaks Community College with a degree in Home Ec., Libra Norma
travelled extensively in search of new and exotic recipes for meatloaf.
Aghast at the unimaginative approaches taken to this uniquely American
concoction, she opened the Double R Diner where meatloaf served is
hallucinatory. A former Miss Twin Peaks ('69) and TPCC Small Business
Owner of the Year, Norma is most at home in her diner talking with Big
Ed. She believes in longer prison terms. BESTS: "The people here,
their warmth and sincerity." Also the Timber players version of _The
Paranormal Review_.
JAMES HURLEY-- January 1, 1973. The quiet, inner strength of
this Capricorn is truly remarkable. Coming from a broken home, James
concluded pretty early on that people can seldom be trusted which is
why he's preplexed so many people trust him. With is Harley and the open
road he is fulfilled. BESTS: His uncle ED, Route 21 north of White Tail
Falls at around 3AM on his Harley, Julee Cruise at the Roadhouse.
TRUDY CHELGREN GREAT NORTHERN EMPLOYEE OF THE YEAR QUOTE: The
customer is always right and so is the wine glass. Practically everybody's
favorite waitress in the Great Northern Timber Room, Trudy Chelgren
finished first in the employee's poll for this year's award. Ben Horne
says, "I think what makes Trudy so special is that her smile never leaves
her face and everyone who comes into the Timber Room notices that and feels
special, too." Trudy is a native of Twin Peaks. In fact, she is a former
assistant captain of the Steeplejack cheerlaeading squad and Morale Officer
of the Bridge Club. She also hosts one of the more fun events of the
year here in town. Being an avid shutterbug, every spring she invites folks
over to look at hundreds of slides of the many coloful awnings that seem
to flourish in out town. An international traveler in her youth, it seems
appropriate that she is in the Twin Peaks United Nations Choir as the
first soprano. A great piece of wood was presented to Trudy in a swell
ceremony in Ben Horne's office. On the wood were these woods: "There's
always a tune with the toast. A few notes with the noodles. A ditty for
dessert. She's the gal who will always sing for your supper with a song
in her head and a plate in her hand. She's the sweetheart of the Timber
Room." (Over 48 dollars were raised to have all these wonderful sentiments
burnt into wood.)
BOB HOBSON-- "Coach" has never been photographed, convinced that
each developed image on film robs one of a part of their soul. He has,
however, coached the Steeplejacks to three State Semi-Finals in the
last five years. A Virgo, though he won't admit it, Coach teaches
business skills and computer programming at the high school and says,
"If you can't kick, don't bother." BESTS: Fall in Twin Peaks,
Caribou Festival, dropping a clean log in the woods.
WILL "Doc" HAYWARD-- Born May 25, 1929. A multi-faceted man,
Gemini Doc graduated from the University of Minnesota where he learned
people will believe almost anything if it's said softly and with enough
sincerity. With a medical degree from the University of Washington,
this expert on euthanasia is a past President of the Northwest Chapter of
the AMA. While his bedside manner has been helpful in nursing many
back to health, Doc wishes he could spend more time with his family.
BESTS: Eggs Sardou at the Timber Room, Twin Peaks Medical and
Prosthetic Co., the Passion Play.
LELAND PALMER-- Leland Palmer was elected Editor of the University
of Washington Law Review in his third year there and gained a reputation
as an astoundingly adroit expert on the subject of International
Corporate Law. A more than adequate tenor, this Pisces is familiar to
TPTP audiences who have been charmed by his light feet and lyrical voice.
His recent demise is a loss to all. BESTS: Big bands at the Roadhouse
playing Artie Shaw favorites and 1952 hit "I saw Mommy Kissing Santa
Claus." His personal best in Twin Peaks was Laura, his only child, his
beloved daughter.
HARRY S. TRUMAN-- Born May 13, 1950. A Taurus but skeptical
about it all, Sheriff Truman is happy to have achieved his life-long
ambition of serving the community in which he grew up. Fond of cowboy
hats and Oriental dishes, he admits to feeling lonely now and again.
BESTS: The Passion Play, salmon run on the Columbia, Wagon Wheel
doughnuts-- all of 'em.

What gives? Is COOP still active? Maybe one of the COOP executives

Please Mr. Lynch, you must complete the Mod Squad Reunion!

Two out of three doesn't quite make it. Michael Cole must show up in
the final episode, right? The show won't be complete without this
closure. :-)

When "Link" (Clarence Williams III) showed up on Twin Peaks I felt the
reunion was inevitable, but time is running out!

1) Lots of PBS stations are showing Prisoner episodes daily in the US. No
one is showing old TP episodes yet.

2) The Prisoner had a strange ending, but nevertheless, it ended. We still
   don't know how TP ends.

3) The Prisoner was shown long enough ago that just about everyone in every
country has seen all the episodes. We're still catching up around the
   world with TP.

I thought it was very entertaining esp the asparagus, and the 48 hour sleepless
experiment. Not quite as revealing on TP as the SD of LP but worth the 3.99
pounds all the same.

One thing I noticed - towards the end of the tapes Dale mentions a dream about
dancing with a little man and a beautiful girl. But I thought that he didnt
have this dream until well into Twin Peaks. Or at least he didnt mention in
TP that it was a dream he'd had before.

Any thoughts on this ?

One possible location for June 10 would be the ever-inviting
Art's Tavern is Glen Arbor, MI (can't get much closer to Frankfort).
They have satellite set-up w/ 2-3 tv's for viewing sports. If you call in
advance you can try to 'reserve' the viewing time for TW (assuming no major
NBA deal is going on then...a world outside of TW?).
Our experience: Wanted to watch Holland play in first-round World Cup 1990
last June. We reserved the 3-5pm time, went in to watch, and p.o.'ed the
octegenarians who wanted to watch Senior's Golf. HOWEVER, the game was on
TNT channel, and the brainless bar people could find it on their system!
Forewarned is fore..etc.
Afterwards, you can stumble around Sleeping Bear Dunes looking for ET's.

Ben Did It! FURESZ@KIDS.WUSTL.EDU (TODD FURESZ) 1991-05-30 14:17

I am trying to post alt.tv.twin-peaks and I hope this makes it as I am
going through the vax at UC Berkeley.
Nobody has said much about the possibility that Coop went after the wrong
man. What if Leland did not do it (kill Laura)? I mean there is a great
deal of evidence that points at Ben Horne.
1. Why did Ben sign over ghostwood and all his holdings to Catherine for an
alibi for a crime he did not committ. He is interested in making money
why toss it all away?
2. What about BOB being in the Great Northern for 40 years now? Leland
certainly has not been there that long but Ben has.
3. They are trying to convince us that Ben is the father of Donna and that
has consummed the last few episodes. I believe that Ben is the real father
(biological) of Laura ("I am gonna tell the whole world the truth about
Ben" or something like it from Laura's secret diary). The diary also points
directly at Laura being sexually abused by her father. A great deal took
that as meaning Leland (I certainly did) but what if Ben is really her
father. That evidence would then have to be pinned on Ben.
I am not 100% sure of this theory but I do think that if this came out
the June 10th episode would be something special. Also the net has been
dead of late and I think this might stir up some talk. If not Ben (and
assuming Coop went after the wrong person in Leland) than who could have
killed Laura?

Todd

PS Annie will be toast during the June 10th episode.

I am opening myself up to huge amounts of criticism here but I am only a dumb Australian.
What happens on June 10th?

Any announcement yet? rlifk@termix.termo.unit.no (Roar Larsen) 1991-05-31 00:20
Was'nt David Lynch supposed to make an announcement regarding the
(possible) future of TP this week?

Any word out yet? Be sure to post as soon as you hear something (never
mind the bandwith - these are important matters!!) - as I'm sure there are
several people around the world who are _somewhat_ interested in hearing
about it.. :-)

WKLP tshirt cbrooks@brahms.udel.edu (Chris Brooks) 1991-05-31 10:58
When I wrote in this file that I'd found TP tshirts on sale for $3,
several netters wrote to ask me to buy/mail shirts to them. Everyone
except one person confirmed that they were still interested in paying
for the shirts they asked for.

If I don't hear from this person in another few days, I'll have an extra
WKLP tshirt size XL for $3.00 plus postage. Let me know if you're
interested.

The Future Looks Grim jguy@lilith.EBay.Sun.COM (Jeff Bone) 1991-05-31 10:59
Sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings, but as of this morning Lynch/
Frost Productions is saying, I quote:

"Twin Peaks is dead. It's dead."

They claim there will be no further attempt to find another network.
They said there might *possibly* be a movie, but even that's just a
remote possibility.

This is all straight from the L/FP spokesperson; I called this a.m.
Basically, it sounds as if they've given up on it.

Damn shame. It was the only intelligent thing on TV, IMHO.

What happened to Twin Peaks? d89-ash@nada.kth.se (Ali Shah) 1991-05-31 14:30
This week they stopped showing Twin Peaks in Sweden (although 2 episodes were left). They said, the reason was that they have stopped showing it in the States ( and Sweden cannot broadcast it before the USA). What's the reason for this?

TP sounds on MAC?? d89-ash@nada.kth.se (Ali Shah) 1991-05-31 14:34
Hello!
A few months ago, I saw a Twin Peaks sound program for the Hypercard which was really cool. Now, some stupid fool has erased that file from the harddisk of the computer it was stored in. Does anyone have a copy of this program that they could send me??

a few answers larryy@Apple.COM (Larry Yaeger) 1991-05-31 20:18
A few, quick answers to recent postings:

For rbennett@loki.une.oz.au...

June 10th is when the last 2 hours of TP will air in the US.

For d89-ash@nada.kth.se...

Those remaining 2 "episodes" are probably the last 2 hours that we will see
  on June 10.

That cool Hypercard stack with all the TP sounds is available on the
TP fileserver, via ftp, at audrey.sait.edu.au.

For that bearer-of-bad-tidings (who would probably prefer to remain nameless)..

  AAAAAAAAGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!! <sniffle> <cry> <sob>

And you're right about it being the only intelligent thing on TV, at least
of a dramatic nature. I've always felt that viewing TP was more like
reading a really good book than like watching even the better television
shows (much less the bulk of the absolute trash the fills the airwaves).

Twin Peaks is Dead?? niklasn@syma.sussex.ac.uk (Niklas Newark) 1991-06-01 10:20
Kyle McLachlan appeared on Jonathan Ross (Britain Ch.4), and when asked
about the future of Twin Peaks, he *did* sound hopeful, though did not
give any definite details. Perhaps though, he only sounded hopeful because
I wanted him to sound hopeful.

By the way, the Emu Proteus has got a really nice string patch called
'Twin Peaks' which is exactly the same one used to play the haunting
chords in aforementioned TV prog. Worth buying one just for that, i'd
say . . . .

And now, the BIG list:

There are some visual images and themes which don't seem to attract
much discussion. I thought I'd see if I could elicit some debate by
throwing out a few observations. So here goes...

 39. Quick shots:
a. The tricky dissolve from the picture of Leo's truck, in
_Flesh World_ magazine, to the actual truck (Episode 1000,
1005). This gave the viewer a connection between Leo and
     Ronnette long before the lawmen.
b. The connection between the flashing flourescent lights in
the morgue, and the stobe light in the dream sequence
     (1000, 1002).
c. The ceramic figurine at Big Ed's and Nadine's place, of a
woman wearing an eye patch (right eye) (1002, 1003).
d. The ceramic Twin Peaks train depot in the model train set in
the window of the Twin Peaks General Store (1001).
e. Maps and books on Tibet (1002, various subsequent).
f. The "Just Say NO to Ghostwood" poster in the Double-R Diner
(with the slash-thru-the O bit) (1004, various subsequent).
g. The sappy arrangement of "Talk to the Animals", from "Dr.
Doolittle", playing on the Muzak in the Lydecker Veterinary
     Clinic (1004).
h. The nice cut from the discussion, at the Palmer's house, of
the broken heart necklace, to Emarald's necklace on
     "Invitation to Love".
i. The life-sized cardboard cutout of Emerald (or Jade?) next
to the tray of cosmetics at the perfume counter of Horne's
Dept. Store, the day Audrey went to work there; the
     "Invitation to Love" Collection (1004).
j. Cover your left eye whenever discussing One Eyed Jack's
     (1002, various subsequent).
k. When Audrey is told to "Pick a card", by Blackie, she
selects a Queen of Diamonds; a much larger version of this
same card is later sewn onto her costume (the girls use
the cards much like numbers on a football jersey) (1007).
l. The chalkboard at the Double-R Diner proclaims the Soup of
the Day. It has portrayed such delicacies as Rabbit
Chili, Split Pea and Lamb, and other yummies (2004,
     various subsequent).
m. The cut from the close up on the neon sign in front of the
Road House, "The Bang Bang Bar", to Judge Sternwood's
gavel, sounding "Bang Bang" inside (2005).
n. The close up of this same neon sign, "The Bang Bang Bar", is
reflected upside down in a puddle, along with two rifle
     cartridges (2007).
o. The flashes of the police photographer's camera, at Harold
Smith's house, punctuating the discovery of key evidence
     by the lawmen (2007).
p. The similarity of the many handballs being dribbled in the
lobby of the Great Northern, and the many golfballs being
pitched by Leland in his living room (2007, 2008).
q. The highly effective use of the phonograph as a presage of
Maddy's killing by Leland (2007). It hadn't been since
1002, when Leland played music, danced with Laura's
portrait, and fought over it with Sarah, breaking it and
smearing his blood over her picture; then there's the
     incident at the funeral...
r. The amazing similarity between the Dwarf, in the dream
sequence, and Leland, in the Great Northern lobby, when
told of the arrest of Ben Horne. He has his back to
Cooper, holding a golf club in front of him with both
hands, shivering with tears/laughter, in a foyer run riot
     with red drapes.

Many contributers have made note of various twin pairings in the
series, but little discussion has grown from the metaphor of
left-sidedness. This assymetry is the anitithesisi of duality, or
twin-ness. The left side is classically (literally) _sinister_ and
there are a multitude of references to this in the show, mostly through
characters bearing some deformity on the left side of their body.

 40. Left-sided references:
a. Nadine's eyepatch, over the left eye.
b. One Eyed Jack's (1002). The neon sign shows the right eye,
it is missing the left one; when discussing OEJ, the
speaker covers his own left eye in sympathy.
c. The One-Armed Man (seen earlier in 1000 than Cooper is). He
is, of course, missing the left arm.
d. The bandage on Big Ed's head, following his getting knocked
out in 1000, is on the left side.
e. Shelly's bruises, courtesy of Leo, on the left side (1002).
f. Letters under the left ring fingernail (1000, various
     subsequent).
g. Tattoos ("Fire--Walk With Me") on the left arm of the OAM
     and Killer BOB (1002).
h. Leo shot in the left arm (1005).
i. Jacques Renault shot in the left arm (1007).
j. Tape concealed in heel of Leo's left boot (2007).
k. Cooper cut by left eye, by Jean Renault, lingering injury
     (2013, various subsequent).
l. Leo stabbed in left leg (2014).

The series' central duality metaphor is richly portrayed through the
constant use of twinning symbols. I have collected a list of the more
obvious ones.

 41. Twins, opposites, or yin-yang pairs:
a. The two ledgers for the mill, maintained by Catherine.
b. Twin Peaks versus "Invitation to Love".
c. The two sets of $10,000 (one of which was held by Laura, the
other half had been paid to Leo).
d. The two brands of twine used to bind the victims, Laura and
     Ronette.
e. The two poker chips (one from Jacque's cabin, with the notch
in Laura's stomach, the one in Ben's pants pocket).
f. The two Queen of Diamonds playing cards, from Audrey's debut
at One Eyed Jack's (the one Audrey picked out of the deck
offered by Blackie, and the matching large one sewn onto
her costume by the hunchbacked seamstress).
g. The two diaries of Laura Palmer
h. The two safe deposit keys (Ben and Josie, holding blackmail
evidence for protection from each other (2006).
i. Dennis/Denise Bryson (2011).
j. Jade and Emerald, from ITL (1003, various subsequent).
k. Laura and Maddy versus Jade and Emerald (1003).
l. Laura's double life.
m. Josie's double life.
n. Audrey's double life (1000).
o. The White Lodge and the Black Lodge.
p. Iceland versus Twin Peaks (treeless tundra and verdent
     forests).
q. The broken-heart necklace.
r. Leo's and Andy's new shoes (bought from Gerard).
s. The beating of Chet by Montana (ITL) versus Leo beating
     Shelly.
t. The shooting of Montana by Chet (ITL) versus Shelly shooting
Leo (redux with Hank shooting Leo).
u. Hank's 3x3 domino.
v. Jacque' 3x3 pair of dice bow-tie dangles.
w. The two tapes used to blackmail Ben Horne (Bobby's copy of
Leo's tape from the riverside meeting, and Pete's tape of
Catherine, back from the dead) (2008).
x. Vivian and Ernie versus Norma and Hank (both wives to
convicts but have no idea just how dangerous they are).
y. Blue Pine Lodge versus Great Northern.
z. The two cabins (the Log Lady's and Jacque's).
       aa. Pete's snake/mongoose trophy.
bb. Laura and Cooper having the same dream.
cc. The Dwarf and the Giant.
       dd. The Double-R Diner.
       ee. Characters with physical similarities:
     i. Ben and Leland.
    ii. Sarah and Sylvia.
   iii. Audrey and Donna.
    iv. James and Bobby.
     v. Norma and Shelly (especially after the beauty parlor
  visit).
vi. Laura and Maddy (same actress).
vii. Jade and Emerald (each of these pairs having a same
  actress).
       ff. Characters with opposing characteristics:
     i. Doc Hayward and Major Briggs
    ii. Hank and Big Ed.
   iii. Cooper and Albert.
    iv. Donna and Audrey.
     v. Laura and Maddy.
    vi. Laura and Laura.
   vii. Laura and Donna.
viii. Mike (owl) and Killer BOB.
    ix. Ben and Leland.
     x. Bobby and James.
gg. Characters with similar characteristics, differing in
     intensity:
     i. Leo and Hank.
    ii. Mike and Bobby.
   iii. Andy and Harry.
    iv. Catherine and Ben.
     v. Laura and Ronette.
    vi. Laura and Josie.
   vii. Donna and Harold Smith.
hh. Characters with other miscellaneous duality symbols:
     i. Lucy and Gwen having babies.
ii. Lucy's baby having two potential fathers (Andy and Dick).
   iii. Dennis/Denise Bryson

These pairings symbolize twins of one kind or another in furtherance of
the central duality metaphor. In Leland Palmer, we have the kindly
family man and ethical, responsible businessman, in contrast to Ben
Horne, the scheming, double-dealing, faithless, amoral criminal. To
futher reinforce their kinship, their wives Sarah and Sylvia also share
a physical resemblance. We have James Hurley, the not-too-bright,
unimaginative, well-meaning, leather-jacketed kid, versus Bobby, the
highly intelligent, ambitious, opportunistic, crooked, sociopathic
leather-jacketed kid. We have Norma, the confident, strong-willed,
unselfish, stoic yet world-weary woman, to Shelly's weak, dependent,
clinging insecurity--the self-made punching bag. Donna, the sweet,
naive, girl next door, and Audrey, the ambitious, calculating,
manipulative seductress. Laura, who was leading a double life, and
hence, her own twin. Maddy, the child-like, sheltered, simple,
look-alike cousin, versus Laura's sophisticated life as a woman.

There are also some twins in which the outward physical appearance is
not obvious. Big Ed versus Hank--strength applied to good or evil.
Major Briggs, the uptight authority figure; Doc Hayward, the laid-back
authority figure. New in this episode, The Giant contrasts with The
Little Man from Another Place. Also in tonight's episode, we get a
clear image of Albert as Cooper's twin. When Albert grimaces at the
coffee in the hospital scene with Big Ed, it sends the message: he
doesn't even like the coffee.

Let's take inventory. Cooper tries to find the good in everyone he
meets. he derives pleasure from every sensory experience, particularly
new experiences. Coffee is his most singular vice. His investigative
technique is positively right-brained, holistic, inductive. Above all
else, he cares. Albert, of course, doesn't seem to like anybody he
meets; most sensory input is likely to be perceived negatively; new
experience is an utter inconvenience. his investigative technique is
classic left-brained, analytic, deductive, factually contrived. He
doesn't seem to care at all about people, only whatever fits his veiw
of logic and theory.

These, of course, are all yin-yang pairings. There are also twins in
the same-same direction. Ben and Catherine, Leo and Hank, Harry and
Andy. These twins differ only in intensity. Another example, perhaps
Josie and Laura (both seem to have led a double life).

Recall that the principle of duality is also reinforced throughout the
show by such dopplegangers as "Invitation to Love", the soap within the
soap, and the characters Emerald and Jade; the vrey names, Twin Peaks
and Double-R; the two murders, linked by the letters of the alphabet;
the two recent victims, Ronette and Laura, one alive and one dead; the
two cabins in the wood, Jacque's and the Log Lady's, both of which led
to important clues to the crime; the two sets of books at the mill; the
two poker chips; the Blue Pine Lodge versus the Great Northern; the
treeless expanse of Iceland versus the Douglas firs of Twin Peaks.

The antithesis of duality is asymmetry. So, we have the constant
reinforcement of charactes bearing some deformity on the left side: the
One-Armed Man; Killer BOB and Mike having tattoos on the left arm; the
letters found under the left ring fingernail of the victims; Nadine's
eyepatch; Big Ed's bandage; Shelly's bruises; Leo and Jacque each shot
in the left arm. Jacoby wears bi-colored glasses, Leo shot in the left
side of the chest in the cliffhanger episode, mirrored by Chet, in
"Invitation to Love", being shot in the same place, while Leo watches,
bleeding.

Against this backdrop is another layer of duality, never directly
addressed and only hinted at. But the clues, while obscure, are
numerous and consistent. Recall the many references to the woods:
logging trucks, wind-blown trees, the Log Lady's log, the Book House
Boys, the knotty pine decor at the Great Northern, the economic
lifeblood of the sawmill. These are generally positive images. In
contrst we have endless closeups of fireplaces. There's the mill fire.
The obscure message, "Fire, walk with me." The Log Lady said, "Fire is
the Devil, hiding like a coward in the smoke." Her husband was killed
fighting a fire. She also said, "Close your eyes and you'll burst into
flames." James said Laura told him of BOB, asking, "Do you want to
play with fire?" The man that lights Laura's fire. The town's key
intersection, the pivot point of many key events, is "Sparkwood and
21", dual symbology again.

The foundation of the community is wood, and fire a manifestation of
things which threaten that community. The central essence of the
series, the murder of Laura Palmer, brings her into focus as the
cneterpiece in the balance (or struggle) between good and evil. Her
double life was the direct result of good and evil tearing her in half.
She lived a constant juggling act, deperately trying to maintain
distance between the two. As long as she lived, the balance was
maintained. But as Jacoby said, she ultimately reached the decision to
end that life. The pressure must have been enormous. As Jacoby said
earlier, everytime she tried to do good, it turned bad; she corrupted
everything around her. She was forever tainted by her assigned role in
life. And after her death, the delicate balance was broken, leading to
an onrush of tragendy, culminating in the cliffhanger episode. The
community is still in a violent process of re-equalizing these twin
forces.

We can further extrapolate this idea to postulate the identity of
Killer BOB. The Log Lady referred several times to the owls. The
Giant said, "The owls are not what they seem." No one has seen Killer
BOB in real life, except for perhaps Ronette; Cooper and Sarah,
independently, saw him only in visions. The idea of fire as a symbol
of evil, the references to owls, and the other spiritual allusions in
the show, are all consistent with the notion that Killer BOB is in fact
the Devil himself, and that the killer, in the physical sense, has yet
to be identified. Woever he was, he was merely an agent of the Devil.
The Devil slowly wore Laura Palmer down, until she could no longer
fight. Now, he's been set loose.

Hi, Ann. Sorry, I can't help re: Nadine's sign. As I recall, the last time
we saw her, she had a sudden self-awareness of her blinded eye. Perhaps
she's coming around and will *return* during the final episode?

Yeah, dead out here, isn't it. Nice house, nobody home.

COOP in Australia???? rbennett@loki.une.oz.au (Ross Bennetts) 1991-06-02 01:35
Hi...

I am getting a bit sad reading here about the end even though we probably arn't even half way thru in Australia.
I was wondering if there is any COOP type movement in Australia, I mean the official (almost) TP fileserver is over here (in South Australia).
We maybe still have a chance of not having to miss out greatly over here in OZ if we can get them to keep it going.
If there is no such thing, how does one start?

Thanks...

TP: A *Real* FBI Agent Cooper? jym@mica.berkeley.edu (Jym Dyer) 1991-06-02 07:18
-=- There really is an FBI agent who talks into his tape recorder,
just like _Twin_Peaks_' Dale Cooper.

-=- FBI Undercover Agent Michael Fain was assigned to infiltrate
the Arizona branch of Earth First! (the branch that Earth First!
founder Dave Foreman was in). His task was simply to be an
_agent_provocateur_: he persuaded some hapless people to try
to knock down some electrical power lines. They were arrested
by the FBI, of course, and then Dave Foreman was arrested for
"conspiracy."

-=- Alas, it would seem that Fain said the following into his
portable voice-activated "Diane"-like tape recorder:

"I don't really look for them to be doing a lot of hurting
people. [Foreman] isn't really the guy we need to pop --
I mean in terms of an actual perpetrator. This is the guy
we need to pop to send a message. And that's all we're
really doing . . . . Uh-oh. We don't need that on tape.
Hoo boy."

Not quite as suave as Dale Cooper, but hey, he's not being paid
by ABC. He's being paid by he American taxpayer.

TP on Video. A thought. pjh@otter.hpl.hp.com (Patrick Hyland) 1991-06-02 08:39
A few weeks ago someone mentioned that the last six episodes of the
first series of TP had been released on videotape in Australia. Since
I missed most of the first series (I only saw episode three), I'd
really like to get my hands on this. Does anyone know more details about
this? Even better, does anyone know more details AND the address of a
video mail-order business in Australia that ships internationally. If
I get any replies by e-mail I'll post the information as a response
to this basenote (with credits). I'm assuming here that Australia uses
the British PAL TV format, as opposed to the American and Japanese NTSC.
Am I right?

I'm probably not the first to do so, but I'd like to suggest that the
demise of TP isn't necessarily a bad thing. Much as I've enjoyed it,
I'd hate to see it go the way of Moonlighting or Miami Vice, which
were wonderful for a season or two, but eventually degenerated into
barely watchable monotony. The only one-hour show which I thought
maintained a consistently high standard over a number of seasons was
Hill Street Blues (which I believe also had some Frost involvement). I'll
miss Twin Peaks, but I'd rather have it gone than garbage.

Cooper's Autobiography alternat@watserv1.waterloo.edu (Ann Hodgins) 1991-06-02 11:31
I am holding in my hands a copy of "The Autobiography of FBI Special
Agent Dale Cooper - My Life, My Tapes.

First of all, let me say that this book paints a more complete picture of
our Dale, particularily the string of misfortunes leading to his current
state as a man whose dreams of romance have not come true.
Maybe it is a case of "opposites attract" or maybe it just worked out that
way, but the significant women in Dale's life (not counting his mother)
have all been looney tunes. His women all seem to be irrational, drug -
addicted and promiscuous. Maybe that is why he is on a rescue mission to
protect young women like Laura Palmer. Dale is determined to battle the
evil head-on that his haunted his life and taken away everyone he loved.

At first I found Cooper's straight-arrow attitude and guiless trust in
authority quite irritating but the book helps to show this qualities in
a kinder light. Cooper's innocence is more endearing in a boy or a young
man than it is now in the adult Cooper, an authority figure in his own
right. This logical, law-abiding Cooper is also more likeable when shown
blundering through his first attempts at law enforcement and also when his
non-ration side is revealed through his hobbies and his dreams.
During sleep or when affected by sleep-deprivation or drugs, Dale shows
ability as a medium. Under the right circumstances another personality
could definititely take hold of our Dale.

Something has been stalking Dale for a long time.
Strange people appear in his dreams and violence finds him in the streets.
He is obsessed with the battle between good and evil and, like
Jesus, seems to be precociously gifted as though born for some purpose.
Just as Jesus amazed the church elders with his wisdom when he was only
twelve years old, Dale Cooper continually demonstrates abilities that seem
unaccountable in one so young and untrained.

We learn that he is interested in psychology, particularily the madnessess
of everyday life, that he sleepwalks, that he has exceptional visualisation
abilities, as an excellent marksman, sees a blue man in his dreams, has
become the agent specializing in serial murders, was involved in a serial
murder case that featured victims whose hands were cut off, feels that his
own hands shake when evil is near, associates evil with the colour blue and
also with fire and laughter.

Because I favour the hypothesis that Twin Peaks is only a dream of some
kind I looked for evidence in the book. If Cooper is dreaming, for instance,
then his dream would feature many of the elements of his real life,
remixed and reworked in the dream. I found that to be the case. For instance,
in high school, Cooper fell in love with a beautiful blonde named
Anne who had a scar on her hand and who became a lesbian. Later, in
Twin Peaks, Coop falls in love with a blonde named Anne with a scar on
her wrist who has spent a lot of time with women recently. Co-incidence?
probably. :-)

Resolved or Cliff-hung, repost antofi@romeo.caltech.edu (Figl, Antonio) 1991-06-02 12:29
Fellow Twin Peaks lovers, we are finally warming up to the
June 10th final showdown (gosh, it certainly took a lot longer than
I thought!). Since I noticed a feeling of expectation, I decided to
repost my two-week old survey for all those who felt "cold" at that
time. I think it's kind of cool to read through the questions to
prepare for the last episode.

Since some of you didn't appreciate the "test" format of it
all, let me make it clear one more time: this is just for fun, enter
if you like, and ignore it if you don't like it.

So here are the questions, and above all, HAVE FUN!

I apologize to those of you who wanted a more
complete list of questions. I know, alot of your favorite
ones are missing and my selection process was not easy.
Anyway, I hope that many of you will find the time to
spend a few minutes of your time to reply. Thank you all
in advance!

Also, I promised some prizes, so here they come. If I receive
enough replies I will honor the ten best scorers, if not just
the top five. Since I just got paid I feel like splurging
a little: so the first prize:

1- One hundred dollars cash!
2- Fifty dollars cash!
3-10 (or 3-5) Twin Peaks memorabilia/goodies:
Julee Cruise CD
Twin Peaks Soundtrack
Twin Peaks books
(you will win the one you prefer, your choice)

Contest rules: I am the sole judge of this, so for this contest
you can call me a supreme being.
In case of a tie the prize will be doubled.
You obviously can call me names and send me to burn
amidst infernal fires if you like.
I will determine the scores for each answer.

Also, I decided to weigh the yes/no questions more just to give the
lazier folks a better chance (although I believe that the difference\
will be made by those who will invest some more time in the tougher
entries.
*To enter, simply reply BY MAIL to this message, answer the way you want:
*yes/no or explain. If you think that the writers won't answer that
*particular question, simply write "unresolved". Sorry if a few
*questions came out to be ambiguous. Answer those as best as you can.

Deepest bows of thank yous to:

It's for rental, not sale, as far as I know. And it's the first six
episodes, not the last six of series 1. I saw it in the video rental
shop.. 5 hours viewing time on two tapes.. at $5 a night. (As if you

Yep, that's right. The tapes are completely compatible between Britain
and Australia.

If I get more details, such as the company that released it, I'll post.

I've had out this video. It is on two tapes, at is the complete first series
after the first 2-hour episode . Their are 7 episodes I think and goes for
about 6 hours .You can also get the 2-hour movie as well . I'm not sure
if this is the same entirely as the 2-hour episode on tv . It ends with Coop
and Harry in the basement of the hosplital . The One-armed man tells Coop that
killer Bob is down their . They go down and The OAM shoots Bob . It then ends
with the dream sequence from twenty-five years in the future .

I was over at Jay's Bookstall, buying my copies of Cooper's
Autobiography and the Twin Peaks Access Guide, and Jay told me that Twin
Peaks would definitely be on either Showtime or HBO, using financing
from the Europeans. He said that they were waiting to make an
announcement until CBS, ABC, and NBC all turned them down. This sounds
plausible, but given the recent post from someone who had been in touch
with Lynch/Frost, I'm not sure if this is just another rumor or if it is
real. -- J

Article in this morning's paper......

                   'Twin Peaks' to become movie
   Great news, "peaks" freaks.
Although it's no longer on ABC, "Twin Peaks" will resurface as a big-screen
flick, according to Hollywood insiders. David Lynch will direct the movie
version of his mondo-bizarro series, which will star almost everybody from the
TV cast. It will be double duty for "Peaks" semiregular Miguel Ferrer, who
played forensics expert Albert Rosenfield.

That's all the info gave.......let's keep our fingers crossed.

A couple o' questions grbst1@unix.cis.pitt.edu (Graig R Bieler) 1991-06-03 19:59
This weekend I rewatched the first two hour movie of TP and
a couple of questions came to mind. These probably have been discussed
before, but I have only started to read the group.....

a). As Cooper and Truman are riding the elevator down to the morgue
the one-armed man steps out of the elevator on the first floor.
What was he doing in the hospital?

b). At the end of the movie, James and Donna bury the necklace.
I believe it is in the next episode that wee see someone take
         the necklace. Who and Why?

  Thanks for your help!

PM Gerard, the OAM, went to the hospital to visit Dr. Bob Lydecker, the vet
who was treating Waldo the mynah bird. Bob was described by Gerard as
"just about my best friend in the world." Dr. Lydecker is in a coma.

My opinion is that Bob Lydecker is to BOB as PM Gerard is to MIKE. Since Dr.
Lydecker is in a coma, BOB is allowed to run free.

We find out in the second season premiere (I think) that it was Dr. Jacoby.
He was out following Leo, and stumbled upon JAmes and Donna, followed them
to the woods, took the neckalce and kept it as a reminder of Laura.

appear that the BBC is to show the final episode as two 1 hour

could have been worse they might have postponed it to show some sport

I think it's referring to the fact that Ferrer's also going to be starring
in the new Lynch/Frost sitcom, "On The Air" (I think that's what it's
going to be called).

I here so much about it here, but have seen nothing of it over here in Australia, I have so far baught The Secret Diary and Music From, and have been told varying stories about the availability of Cooper's Autobiography (ranging from 'should be in any day now' to 'is'nt being released til' July').

I've been wondering this too-- of course since all of the shows
that have been aired including those of last season don't even really
add up to a regular full season of episodes, the "Diane is revealed"
episode is probably lost forever.

Hmmm. This is what I was suggesting be done a week or so ago,
that Twin Peaks be made into 2-hour movies that would come out
every so often to appease fans. Perhaps someone on the Lynch/Frost
team *does* read this group?

I think you all might be confusing the fact that the final episode is going
to be presented as a 2 hour movie, rather than the idea that there will be
a subsequent movie made.

There was a small article in the Chicago Tribune that read the same way. If
you didn't understand that the last episode was really just a double episode,
it sounded like a new movie.

This is probably true....but from what Harry Goaz (Andy) told me personally,
there were LOTS of things that they WANTED to do, but couldn't within the
48 minute framework. Among others: Expanding 'Invitation to Love' and
having the actors come to town!!

I would add that, as much as I love the show, the weekly serial format
was getting annoying. I always thought Twin Peaks would work much
better as a mini-series--give me one big splurge of five 90-minute or
two-hour episodes airing 9-11 Sunday-Thursday, with a decent propor-
tion of major and minor plot twists resolved by the end of the week,
and I'd be there every night glued to the set. Just don't give me so
much time to forget who's who and what's what, and to lose patience
with the constant suspense, so that it all gets dreadfully hokey
instead of hip. I also think the show would get a lot of viewers
if ABC were to run the first two seasons' episodes in some late night slot over
the summer; it'd be a hell of a lot better than the crappy talk show
ABC has after Nightline now.

_All_ the shows on tape i can not help but feel depressed, my `peaker' days
will come to an end with the tapes wearing thin and Laura's Diary no longer
needing to be read since it is embetted in my memory. But *Hopefully* a
movie will follow and maybe the show will return to the air someday, but for
now all we can do is be content with what we have gotten out of the show..the
enjoyment and happiness.

Disappearing inhabitants ajh@crosfield.co.uk (adam huby) 1991-06-05 05:49
Well now that we've finally caught up with the States over here in
Britain (and wasn't that last episode brilliant ?), perhaps someone on
the other side of the pond could clear up something that's puzzling me.

A few weeks back there were a couple of articles in this group that
mentioned something about the number of inhabitants on the "Twin Peaks"
sign at the town border decreasing. Well, in the version we've seen on
the BBC I'm pretty certain we only ever see this sign in the initial
credits, and it's always the same (52,201 or whatever it is). So is
somebody making this up, or do you get to see this sign more often in the
States ? I suppose one possibility might be that it's shown before
commercial breaks, which we mercifully don't get over here.

    Thanks for any explanation,

Last (?) Episode jfr@tellabs.com (John Ryder) 1991-06-05 06:55
According to the snippet in the Chicago Tribune that was referenced a couple
of articles back, the last episode of Peaks was not completely directed
by David Lynch. He did the second half, but Tim Hunter directed the first
hour. I guess this won't be too bad, 'cuz I thought Hunter did a pretty
decent job of emulating Lynch's style in the past.

The June 4th Boston Globe had a simliar comment in the Names & Faces
section and they explained the 'double duty':

Who resurrected Laura Palmer?

First there was "Twin Peaks" the TV show -- but it was canceled (the last
two episodes run next Monday). So why not "Twin Peaks" the movie? It's
true: "Twin Peaks" will resurface as a big-screen movie for theatrical
release, according to Hollywood insiders. David Lynch will direct the
film version his series, which will star almost everyone from the TV cast.
It will be double duty for "Peaks" semiregular Miguel Ferrer, who played
uptight forensics expert Albert Rosenfield. Ferrer is set to star in a
Lynch series pilot about a 1950s variety show. Ferrer plays the host.
That takes care of bringing back one cult TV show in a new format. But
why stop there, Mr Names & Faces wonders. How about "China Beach" as a
Saturday morning cartoon show? Or "The Ten O'Clock News: The Musical"?
Or, best of all, a mime version of "thirtysomething"?

I believe the series pilot refers to Lynch/Frost's new production for
TV called "On The Air". Lynch is doing a show about the 50's? That'll
be a different. :-)

It was a dark and stormy night...
(The scene opens with a pan of one of the spectacular beaches of Lake Erie.
The waves are crashing violently upon the shore, lightning explodes thunder-
ously in the sky. The camera returns to the beach, looking out on the lake,
where a tidal wave seems to be rolling in)

Cameraman: oh my God!
(coughing, sputtering, and screaming from the cameraman suddenly end as the
wave recedes. The camera focuses in on a huge mound of plastic. Going
around to the other side of this mound we see that a body is wrapped inside of
it. Upon closer inspection we find out it is the body of Shari with all of
her once-glorious RED hair thrown about her face...Fade out...)

Scene II

(We see several people standing around Shari's body. These include larry,
barb, zen, mike, and keith. Keith is weeping, for he is very pro-life and
hates to see such things happen)

Keith: Who would do such a thing?
Zen: Shaddup! We doan' need to steenkin' crybabies 'round here!
(Barb has a look of utter disgrace on her face. She looks around nervously to
see if anyone notices her obvious trembling. Seeing that nobody is paying
attention to her, she enters her car and puts a tape into the tapeplayer and
begins to listen. It is the voice of Shari.)
Shari: Oh, Dr. Wanchisen, I just don't know what to do. Every night I have
visions of him. I wake up screaming. He is so disturbing! I know it's
because of him that I have become so evil. I feel as if he is reserving a
place for me in hell.
(Barb shakes her head...)
Barb: Who is this GREG character?!

Scene III

(Mike is sitting on the sofa staring at the wall in his living room. An image
of Shari passes through his mind. He starts screaming, loud, violent screams.
Larry walks in with Bruce/Burce in his hand. A tear is rolling down larry's
eye.)
Larry: Mike, are you o.k.?
Mike: I just miss Shari so much.
Larry: That's why I'm here. I want you to have Bruce/Burce, as a reminder.
Mike: A reminder of what?
Larry: A reminder of Shari, of course. She was a special woman.
Mike: Why would Bruce/Burce remind me of Shari?
Larry: Don't you know? Shari is Bruce/Burce's father!
Mike: What?! Why you wife stealing &@#$*&$%@*!!!
Larry: I didn't steal her! She just donated some sperm! No! Mike! Be
        rational!! What are you doing?!
(The camera fades out as Mike lunges for Larry's throat)

Scene IV

(Tim is in his office at the local Cleveland Police Department. A man that
looks vaguely familiar walks into the room. Tim looks up from his desk and
gasps)
Tim: B-Barb...is that you?
Barb: Shhh...from now on it's Ben to you.
Tim: Yeah, sure, Ben...uh...why are you here?
Ben: I'm here to help you figure out who killed Shari Hills.
Tim: How do you propose to do that?
Ben: I have some inside info that leads directly to the killer. Only there's
        one slight problem.
Tim: Oh?
Ben: Yes, the killer isn't human, at least not in the sense of the word.
Tim: You mean...Larry...
Ben: No no no...easy mistake, but you're wrong.
Tim: I see...well, then who was it?
Ben: Someone who left Triple Peaks a long time ago...

Scene V

(Keith is on the phone with a mysterious woman)
Woman: So, I've come back to Triple Peaks.
Keith: Let me get this straight...you were almost aborted, but at the last
minute some infinitely wise Pro-Lifer saved you and so, then you were
        given up for adoption?
Woman: Yes, exactly. That's why I had to call you. I knew that if anybody
would understand, it would be you.
Keith: Yes, I definitely understand...do you want to tell e wy yu'r here
        though and who you are?
Woman: Why don't we meet. How about brunch at Leutner?
Keith: O.K...Saturday at 11.
Woman: Perfect. I knew I could count on you.

Scene VI

Bruce/Burce: Stop it! You're killing my mommy!
Mike: I'll smash him to a bloody pulp if I have to...that'll teach him not
        to sleep with Shari again!
Larry: I told you! It wasn't like that!
(In a burst of rage, Bruce/Burce stares at Mike...flames shoot out of
Bruce/Burce's eyes and ingulf Mike. Mike screams and falls unconscious...

Scene VII

Mike is in a chair. Shari is in a chair at the opposite end of the room.

The obvious answer, which you've all ready hinted at, is that ITL
parallels TP, and by discontinuing the former, they've foreshadowed
the cancellation of the latter. The show that predicts its own death?

Whether that's actually the case, or whether Lynch & Co. were just too
lazy|bored|sloppy|whatever to continue with ITL, we will probably
never know.

And for that matter, I will be surprised if they actually succeed in
wrapping up all the loose ends in 2 hours w/o totally trashing everything.

Dear Ali,

Yep, a TP hypercard stack is available.

Quote Australian MACNEWS May 91:

"For those that have been caught up in the Twin Peaks
television series there is Twin Peaks Sounds (516 Kbyes
Educorp). Four of the tunes (or at least small parts
of them) are included on disk as well as the Cdev
SoundMaster which allows tunes to be set for various
mac functions."

I've no idea where Educorp are HQ'd, but the Australian dist
is Validata, Tel (61 043) 85.2091.

I ordered the SW last week. Check with me next week if
you like and I'll tell you what it's like.

Literary Allusions platt@ccu.umanitoba.ca 1991-06-05 17:39
Hello!
I may be new to the alt.tv.twin-peaks net, but I'm a hardcore Peak freak
who's been hip to Lynch since Eraserhead- well, since Dune, anyway. I'm
glad to find that there is someone else as obsessed with this as myself. I've
never felt this way about a tv show since Moonlighting was canceled. Even
that show wasn't that great. I would like to propose the writing of a
compendium/companion along the lines of the Star Trek books, complete
with plot synopses, cast listings, critical interpretations, etc. I don't know
if this has already been suggested, but I also have a idea for a list-
allusions to other shows, movies, and literary works. In exchange for this, I
would like any information re: the ending of the European version, the
availability of the European version, and the possibility for reissues of all
episodes on tape.

Allusions to other works within Twin Peaks
Note: these are not meant to be read as a definite link to all these works;
some may be coincidences. In general, most are lighthearted jabs, but some
have real value in solving the mysteries of Twin Peaks.

(In chronological order starting with 1000):

1. The Bird: Blue Velvet ends with a shot of a robin with a bug in its
mouth.

2. "Twin Peaks": Supposedly a fairly obvious sexual reference, I hadn't
heard it used before, although SPY's "Separated At Birth?" book (published
1988) commented on the "Twin (widow's) Peaks" of Bob Eubanks and Butch
(Eddie Munster) Patrick. As well, for a town even more obssessed with
lumber, catch Lynch's own Blue Velvet.

3. The name "Laura": In the 1944 movie Laura, a girl named Laura is
killed, only to turn up as someone else. Also in the film, the villian's name
is Waldo (!) Lydecker (!!), and a gun is hidden in a clock (!!!). As well, in a
coincidence David Lynch would probably shrug off, the film starred Dana
Andrews, whose initials bear a resemblance to TP's own Dana Ashbrook.
Also, note possible connection with Laura Dern.

4. Andy the crying deputy: In a arc of Wiseguy revolving around a
murder in a small lumber town, the police officer that found the body cried
upon its discovery. It was later revealed that the officer himself was the
culprit. (This is probably not a coincidence. The plot of the TP pilot was
well-known within TV circles. Further proof: the town's name was
"Lynchboro"). Last thing on this: the Globe tabloid reported a week before
2006 that Andy killed Laura and was going to murder Lucy, who was planning
an abortion.

5. The song Bobby (and much later James) plays on the jukebox is from
the Lynch/Badalamenti Industrial Symphony. It's called "I'm Hurt Bad".

6. Ronette on the railroad tracks: Possible redux of Isabella
Rosselini's nude wandering in Blue Velvet.

7. James The Biker: In an Interview interview, James Marshall said
that David Lynch actually told him to think of James Dean while acting.

8. Nadine's one-eye: Numerous references, too many to list, but
probably the one that applies here is the character on "Days Of Our Lives".

9. Dale Cooper: Dale's middle name is Bartholomew, marking him D.B.
cooper, a la the famous skyjacker. Kyle MacLachlan's performance is said to
have been inspired by Lynch himself.

10. The OAM: The most famous example of a one-armed man is, of
course, the killer in the Fugitive. On that show, Richard Kimble's pursuant
was named Phillip Gerard.

11. The flickering lights: Apparently an actual hospital goofup, Lynch
liked it so much he decided to flicker the lights himself. However, the
lights-flickering-motif was prevalent in Blue Velvet, Eraserhead, and even
Orson Welles' Citizen Kane.

12. The videotape: Numerous, including sex lies and videotape.

13. The reflection in Laura's eye: used on a soap opera in the summer
of 1990, don't know which one.

14. The fallen moosehead: The first of many possible references to
Fawlty Towers, which of course also featured a hotel with a harried owner.

(From 1001)

15. The Log Lady: According to the Rolling Stone Interview with Lynch,
The Log Lady predates Twin Peaks; Lynch was planning an earlier series
with Catherine Coulson starring as the Log Lady.
 (From 1002)

16. "Marilyn Monroe and the Kennedys": An obsession shared by
Cooper, Lynch, and Frost, who wrote a script for Goddess, a Monroe movie
that was to be directed by Lynch.

17. Ben & Jerry: Twin Peak's largest food freaks share their names
with the allPnatural icePcream merchants.

18. OnePEyed Jack's: another crude sexual reference, fully explained
by Bobby Peru in Wild At Heart. Also, the Western with Marlon Brando.

19. Horne's Sonnet: Shakespeare, but I don't know the number. I'm not
as good with the classics as I am with the Lynch and TV references.

20. The Dream: Mark Frost has said that the dream imagery (including
the owls) come from his own dreams

21. BOB: The name "Bob" is a source of constant commentary. The
recently-published Bob Book characterizes "Bob" as a generally benevolent
guy, although it acknowledges the evil BOB. Among notable BobsI A "Bob" is
thanked on Julee Cruise's Floating Into The Night LP; There is a church of
Bob, a.k.a. the church of the Subgenius; Drugstore Cowboy, which stars Matt
Dillon as a junkie named Bob, alsofeatures both Heather (Annie) Graham (as
Nadine!!!!!) and Grace Zabriskie (as Bob's mother!!!!!! in its cast, finally, there
is Bob Barker, the game-show host who decided to stop dying his hair and
letting it turn naturally white (!!!!!!!)

22. The Little Man From Another Place: In Nicholas Roeg's Don't Look
Now, Donald Sutherland pursues a malevolent dwarf in a red suit.

23. Venus and Saturn: The statue (presumably of Venus) and the model
of Saturn in the dream sequence may refer to the myth of Saturn, who killed
his children. However, Venus was the daughter of Jupiter, not Saturn.

24. Talking backwards: apparently a talent known to Michael
Anderson, who is also being cast as Ronnie Rocket and appears in the
Industrial Symphony.

25. The floor in the dream sequence was seen in Eraserhead.

(From 1003)

26. Madeleine: A reference to Vertigo, in which (Kim Novak) posed as
the "dead" Madeleine.

27. The Bookhouse: Is there some allusion here that I am not aware
of? If anyone has something to add, please elaborate. In the future

28. The dream soul: has anybody with a knowledge of Blackfoot
culture been able to trace this legend? I'm not doubting its existence, but
would like to know more.

(From 1004)

29. Jacoby's sunglasses: Count Floyd on SCTV sported Ray-Ban
Wayfarer versions of the same glasses, suitable for 3-D viewing.

30. Phillip Michael Gerard: See note # 10.

31. Bob Lydecker: See note #3

32. Waldo: See note #3

33. Hank's Domino: I'm not sure about this one; any suggestions? (also,
did anybody notice Hank's bolo tie in 2007?)

34: Owls: The first sighting of an owl inTP was in 1004, when Donna
and James went to where they had buried the necklace. An owl hooted above,
startling the two.

(From 1005)

35. ITL: While Hank reunites with Norma, Shelly is watching ITL.
Montana is attacking Chet, and Jared is tied up with a blue sash in his
mouth, a la Blue Velvet.

36. "The Third Man": A possible reference to the movie The Third Man,
in which the "third man" (seen carrying off a dead body) turns out to be the
"victim" himself, thus causing some to believe that Laura was not really
dead, and disguised as Maddy.

(From 1006)

37. Audrey spying on Battis through the slats in the closet door: Kyle
MacLachlan did the same thing in Blue Velvet

38. Barney and Fred (Coop and Ed's secret IDs): 'nuff said.

39. Hester Prynn: As Blackie notes, the woman in the Scarlet Letter.

40.The cherry stem: TP writer Harley Peyton once claimed that his
ex-girlfriend could actually do this.

(From 1007)

41. Queen of Diamonds: The card that triggered Raymond Shaw
(Laurence Harvey) to kill in The Manchurian candidate. At one point, Rosie
(Janet Leigh) wore a large version of the card at a costume party.

That's season one. I will have a complete version of season two
sometime after June 10th.

Only 5 days and counting!

TP references on TV larryy@Apple.COM (Larry Yaeger) 1991-06-05 18:53
Has anyone recorded any of the various TP references that have appeared in
sitcoms, Sat. Nt. Live, promotional segments, commercials, etc.?

I plan on watching summer reruns for the ones that have been mentioned here
on the newsgroup, but as this is really quite a pain when you don't otherwise
care about the programs in question, I'd love to find someone willing to
trade interesting video for these shows/segments. I have an embarrasingly
large video collection of all sorts of comedy, science fiction, music, and
lots of miscellaneous weirdness... I'm sure I can find something of interest
to trade for copies of these various TP-related programs.

Please respond by email if you're interested. If you live in the San Francisco
Bay Area, especially Silicon Valley, we can get together and do it all in
real time.

Oh yes, did anyone, anywhere see the Nite Tracks videos that were supposedly
on May 25th? I recorded the entire late night run and about 1/2 of the
earlier "countdown" (a sports event screwed up the timing on that one), but
saw no "Twin Geeks" or "Lynch video". I was recording from the satellite
feed.

You can place mail orders for the Twin Peaks books with Simon & Schuster at:

The Access Guide is $10.95 (U.S. dollars of course) plus $0.75 for

Hmmm... there is the BOB=Saturn=bad god, Leland=Jupiter=good
god, Laura=Venus=daughter of good god analogy.

I saw this Nite Tracks and there was a "Lynch video." It was rock'n
back inside my heart by Julee Cruise. The video was a direct cut from
Industrial Symphony #1. The "Twin Geeks" thing is completely lame.
Every week the show a few minutes of some really old movie about these
Siamese twins. Amazingly, one of the twins was able to murder someone
(by gunshot) without the other twin knowing. Well, I think that's what
happened. I didn't really pay attention.

Plus, we've seen evidence of this before. i.e. People talked
about the feeling of dread no longer present in the show and the fact
that Andy was no longer crying over various murders since Laura died--
A few weeks later, Andy cried in the "Giant Pawn" episode and the "dread
level" increased-- especially in the last episode. Of course, the time
between postings and when the shows were made is probably too short for
there to be a relationship, but just in case... let's start addressing
our postings to Lynch/Frost Productions in case they're out there:

Hey Dave! How's it going? I hope the new TV show is coming
along well. Try to work Albert into it if you can. Also, here's some
advice: if you want the show to last, keep it away from ABC and avoid
talking about aliens. I think a lot of the mainstream TP viewers tuned
out after the "radio telescope message" episode...

Ok, I'm going a little nuts now... maybe it's just TP withdrawl so these
delusions should end in a few days.

Re: Finale Preview airing times? LIBR8506@Ryerson.CA 1991-06-06 08:39
TWIN PEAKS finale will be run opposite the first repeat of NORTHERN
EXPOSURE. Since these audiences are similar , there may be problems.

Blue Velvet question machala@hcmv2.ti.com (Chuck Machala ) 1991-06-06 08:47
Anyone know the title and author of the song Ben (Dean Stockwell) sings for
Frank (In dreams I walk with you.....)? I tried to extract it from the
credits but they were too small and blurry on the video I rented.
Thanks in advance, Chuck Machala
