quick thoughts kbays@bluemoon.rn.com (Ken Bays) 1992-02-22 15:09
I've been re-watching some episodes of TP lately. Today I watched the episode where Maddy was killed. At one point, when the Road House is shown (actually the sign at this time says 'Bang Bang Bar' - did the bar have two names or something?), we see a view of its neon sign reflected in a nearby puddle of some liquid on the ground. It's very similar to the shot of the oil in the woods reflecting the red curtains. This happens in the episode at the same time that Maddy is being killed and the Giant is showing up inside the bar. Perhaps that was another pool of oil, and the Road House/Bang Bang Bar/whatever is of some "spiritual" significance. I've always thought there was something special about it anyway, since that's where Cooper gathered all the people to find out who killed Laura. Is there a chance this is the other Lodge? Doubtful, I think, but I do believe it has some importance, and I do believe that was indeed a puddle of oil next to the bar. Kenneth Bays ..[src]

It could be hinting at a gateway or something. Or it could have just
been a cinematic device to end the program on. Or both. That's the
problem with Twin Peaks.

re: Coop in BlackLodge, Final Episode -- or not. v075q5fr@ubvmsb.cc.buffalo.edu (Scott J Gorcey) 1992-02-23 01:03
Everyone seems fairly certain that Coop was in the Black Lodge
in the final episode (hoping the SPOILER doesn't still apply --
sorry if I've ruined this for someone)....
But I had the definite feeling that we were never ^in^ the
BlackLodge. This was the waiting room. As evidenced by the
many rooms, each just about the same, seemingly going nowhere.
The entrance to the Black, and presumably White lodges were in
the Waiting Room somewhere, Coop just never found it.
Windom Earle, I assume, did, because he just appeared out of
nowhere, talking backwards (Coop never did -- another point
of hearsay if not proof that he never entered either Lodge).
If Love gets you into the White Lodge and Fear into the Black,
what did the Log Lady's husband's oily goop get Coop into?
This seems to give some hope to Coop's recovery. If, as Hawk
said, a man is confronted with his greatest Fear in the Black
Lodge and his soul is entirely obliterated if he shows imperfect
courage (tho Hawk believes in several souls -- maybe a spare??)
maybe that's the hope that Coop is still okay in there -- in
the Waiting Room, not the Lodge and his Doppleganger can be
interchanged with him again.
A long while ago, someone with the first draft script to this
episode talked about an Arthurian throne room (which we saw
Major Briggs sitting on for a minute) as one of the Lodges,
which would seem to confirm that the Lodges are something different
than the waiting room. Briggs commented that the White Lodge
(which he saw in a vision, possibly visited when he was kidnapped)
was a huge white house with many rooms. Phillip Gerard said
similar things about the Black Lodge.
None of which describe the waiting room (except the many rooms
thing, but the waiting room is not a "big house made of wood").
Food for thought, I guess, but here's hoping this isn't a Gordian
Knot.

I've always thought this was there as a foreshadowing to the
pool of oil reflecting fire when BOB exits the lodge in Glastonberry
Grove later on; not of significange on its own except as compared
to the later image.
Seems in keeping with ^TP^'s intricate and subtle foreshadowing.
Interesting point, tho I don't think the Roadhouse (the sign
is adjectival, I think, but that's IMO) has any spirutual
or supernatural significange in TP -- except that there were
at that particular moment "Owls in the Roadhouse." Not always,
mind you, but at that moment.

FWWM (Twin Peaks prequel movie) opening in London? rhaller@nntp.uoregon.edu (Rich Haller) 1992-02-23 10:39
Looks like I may be in London for a couple of days in mid March. Has a date for the opening in London of 'Fire Walk With Me' actually been set? I've seen the odd posting about it and a TP marathon. OK, so I missed the scraps that were cut from the throne room scene. Are these available on the tp-archive ftp site? Anyway, my $.02 about this thread... Couldn't it be that Coop was experiencing both love and fear, thereby entering what would be a conglomeration of both lodges? This might go a long way to explaining the alternating black and white pattern on the floor (yes, the one reminiscent of the lobby in Eraserhead)? Also this would allow the writers much more leeway in the presumably- never-to-be-seen followup/3rd season premiere episode? Come to think of it, this is really worth only about $.01... What Happens Next/ traveler@uflorida.cis.ufl.EDU 1992-02-23 12:08
Incidentally, before I get to my main topic, it should be noted what date it is today: Feb. 23...everybody know what that means? If not, I'll remind you at the end. Anyway, I haven't read this group in ages. But a few months back, I posted my speculation about a follow-up (rather than FWWM, a prequel) to the last episode. Here, more or less, is what I said: It's 2014, and David Lynch happens to be at loose ends, so he decides to follow up on the legendary cult TV show he did 2 1/2 decades ago. Our story opens in contemporary (2014) Twin Peaks. Many of the characters of the old show are still around, albeit older; many new and strange cast members are also present. Donna, Bobby, Leo, Shelly, James, etc. all have teenage kids now. What about Coop? There are several possibilities: he's been in an asylum for 25 years, having apparently gone mad shortly after the 1989 Miss Twin Peaks pageant; he's continued to serve as an FBI agent, but is sometimes possessed by Bob, and commits horrible crimes that he never remembers afterwards; or he's simply dis- appeared--maybe into the Waiting Room, one of the Lodges, or on an extended sojourn to Tibet. Things have apparently settled down in TP, but now some strange forces again stir in the woods. The residents of the Ghostwood subdivision are reporting various bizarre incidents to the new police chief (let's see, who should it be...James? or to really go against expectations, as Lynch always does, Bobby?), who sends his deputy Harry Dale Moran (Lucy & Andy's kid) out to investigate. It seems that people are claiming to have been visited by the long-dead Laura Palmer. Soon Coop arrives on the scene... Someone else can take it from there. (The whole point about 25 years refers to what Laura said to Coop in the last episode.) And if you don't already know, Feb. 23, 1989 was the date of Laura's death... Feel free to embellish on this scenario; I'd love to see what other people can come up with! --Max *************************************************************** "That gum you like is going to come back in style." --The Little Man From Another Place *************************************************************** Max Clarke/o)\ "The Traveler"\(o/ ***************************************************************[src]

Easter Park Assault - Doctor Jacoby/Leland v075q5fr@ubvmsb.cc.buffalo.edu (Scott J Gorcey) 1992-02-23 16:29
Doctor Jacoby smelled the supernatural oil at Easter Park in
episode 007. It was of course Leland who attacked him, having
watched Maddy sneak out of the house earlier and followed her
to the park. He saw her dressed as Laura (perhaps the first hints
in his mind that he would have to kill Maddy as well -- Maddy who
he refers to as "my daughter" when he kills her).
But, why did he attack Jacoby? He smelled of oil -- he was
obviously possessed at the time. Jacoby later smelled the oil
when Leland killed Jaques in the hospital -- BOB committed both
of these crimes, but why? Why would BOB kill Jaques? Leland,
if in his nonpossessed state he had no memory of BOB, has clear
motivation for killing Jaques -- the man just arrested for killing
his daughter. But why would BOB?
If Leland, in his crazed state, saw an appirition of his daughter
in the park and someone stalking her (Jacoby) he would naturally
assume this was the killer and attack. But why BOB?
Loads a questions....

Sorry, but I always had the impression that the "red-curtain" scenes were
meant to be set in a place where there were just TWO identical rooms, not
"many". As you will recall, they were connected by a central passageway that
had a "door" opening off each end on opposite sides. Meaning: that from
either end of the passage the whole setup looked identical (which it was, if
the two rooms were truly identical). This tricked me for a while, since the
first time I saw it I thought Cooper was going from room to room and I couldn't
keep track of what was happening. Then I realised that he seemed to be just
going back and forth between one room and the other.
I am aware that SOMEONE (Little Man ? - can't remember) said to Coop after he
entered, "this is the waiting room". I therefore assume that the other room
was the black lodge.
Any other comments ?

But why would BOB? I don't think Leland was possessed at the time he killed Jacques. When he killed Maddy the episode made such a big deal of it (slowed down, weird noises, strange lighting effects etc.) that it was obvious that Leland was possessed by and under the influence of BOB. Not to mention all the shots we get of Leland changing into BOB and vice versa! But,when Jacques gets smothered, all we see is the camera panning up from his hospital bed to reveal a "normal", albeit distressed-looking, Leland. What I'm saying is that there is no sign of him being possessed at that moment. The oil smell could possibly linger even when he was "normal". And as for motive: BOB would have none for killing Jacques, but Leland obviously would. Just my $0.03 ... (inflation) Tim Hatfield #1 Aussie Twin Peaks Fan[src]
mystical engine oil and sacred tattoos... 01sybok@ac.dal.ca 1992-02-24 04:05
I was just thinking... I wonder if the mystical engine oil ;-) is the medium that the denzines of the Black Lodge use to travel from their world to ours. Maybe any black liquid will do. Black coffee for example.... Hmm.. if this were true, then the logical extention would be that the denzins of the White Lodge travel to this world through white liquid, for example milk. I guess this means my cafe au lait addiction is going to lead me to the Waiting room ;-) Seriously, this might explain the different viscosities of the coffee in Cooper's cup when he was visiting the Black Lodge. It might also explain why they showed Laura's smiling face gently appearing in the cup of coffee during the credits of the Grand Finale. I wonder also (hey its first thing in the morning and my mind is wandering *bigtime*), if the tattoo said MOM, but was really a petroglyph like the Log Lady's. Questions about final episode peter_joachim@tron.gun.de (Peter Joachim) 1992-02-24 16:20
Hi everybody! We in Germany just got to see the final episode. Full of cryptic scenes and wild symbolism. I like that! Anyway I've got a few questions about the part that takes place on the "Other Side". Who talked to Briggs via Sarah Palmer? Was it Earle, Bob or the Little Man? Is there some significance about the strange (doubly backwards) speaking. Except for Cooper everybody on the Other Side (including Earle & Annie) speaks that way. Does this imply that Earle too is a supernatural being? Did you in netland reach some consensus on these topics and the meaning of the final episode in general? bye Peter Joachim (Z-Netz:PETER_JOACHIM@TRON.ZER) --- That gum you like is going to come back in style. -- THE ANSWER V2.01[src]

> > while the series debuts in the US.
Here's my version of what I think happened:
(1a) Lynch comes up with a series proposal, and ABC okays it.
(1b) Ears perk up. A new David Lynch movie? Hey, this is ART! We could
make some money off of this! A deal is put together to do a foreign
video release -- but Lynch has to film an ending for it.
(1c) Lynch films the pilot, which sets up the mystery, AND in his spare time
also films the Euro-ending.
Steps (2), (3), and (5) I agree with. However, by the sheer awkwardness
with which the Euro-footage fits into the actual first-season episodes
(the totally illogical connections like Jacques' red drapes, for example),
I think those scenes were already written and shot before Lynch had any
idea to use them in the series. He probably just figured he could shoot
whatever goofy stuff he wanted, and then he liked it enough to keep it.

My personal opinion about why Coop is the only one in the "Lodge" scenes who doesn't speak double-reversed is moderately simple: the scenes are more or less from his point of view. Perhaps he doesn't hear himself speaking backwards. Also, the "language barrier" delineates Coop more clearly as the protagonist. Finally, Lynch may have thought it would be too irritating to have *everyone* in those scenes speaking double-reversed (No, scratch that--Lynch doesn't seem to have any history of not doing things because they might prove irritating!). Finally, Coop has many of the more important lines in those scenes, and maybe Lynch wanted to make sure they could be heard (and not just read) clearly. -- Ed Hughes, SAS Institute | "See no evil...well, maybe just a little... The Irish national station RTE was ahead of the BBC in showing TP and screened the two hour final episode. It was funny to watch the two hours on RTE and a week or more later expect to see the two hours on BBC, you know, to catch up on any bits I missed, only to find that it was two separate episodes and I had to wait another week to see the second part. Briggs that she was at that moment in the black lodge with Agent Cooper. She was telling him because they are old friends (remember the pilot?), and she probably has some idea that Briggs is interested in the Lodges, or just in spiritual things in general. Notice she says "Black Lodge"...just because the LMFAP said that "This is the waiting room" doesn't mean that he is not in the Black Lodge! He's in the waiting room of the Black Lodge! She was speaking funny because everybody speaks funny in the Black Lodge (that backwards reverse technique). The ONLY ones who speak normally are Coop and BOB. How she got there? Well she's always been psychic and had visions, but beyond that, theres no clue about under what circumstances she entered the Black Lodge. I assume that the reason for the backwardspeak in the Black Lodge is to convey the feeling of it being hard to talk while there. Beyond that, and the symbolism of backwards masking as being devil-inspired, I don't know why he uses the technique. Don't think so. They were in the Waiting Room (between both White
and Black Lodges, in my reading of it). That backwardspeak came
only from those who had entered the Black Lodge (wonder how they'd
speak after coming out of the White Lodge?) -- I'm assuming that
Earle, with his gift of Fear, was admitted to the Black Lodge and
Cooper, with his Oil, only to the Waiting Room.

Good reason to accept the evidence that she was "chanelling"
someone's message. If not Laura (and I think the possibility
is interesting), maybe Leland. He was her husband. Or Maddy?
We saw all of them in the Waiting Room...

This is the same method that BOB used to pummel Laura in Ronette's vision of the train car murder. Further, it looked to me like it was Leland looking with horror (not BOB looking with delight) at Jacques' body when the camera panned up in the hospital. I don't think it's likely that BOB possessed Leland, killed Jacques, and then left Leland to see what had been done by him (or through him). This doesn't seem to be BOB's modus operandi. After all, he never let Leland know about the murders of Theresa Banks or Laura until he fatally injured and left Leland. Moreover, I believe Leland confessed to killing Jacques. I may be wrong on this, but I think he gave some sort of acknow- ledgment of the deed. I remember that MIKE said of BOB, "He feeds on fear...and the pleasures. They are his children." Perhaps BOB was a spectator at the hospital, merely delighting in the fear of Jacques as he died and the horror of Leland as he committed the murder. He had no need to pull Leland's strings then; Leland seemed to commit the murder all by himself. Perhaps Jacoby only smelled the oil in the hospital because he was in a confined space with Leland and BOB. At the park, the smell would have been harder to detect due to the open area. Also, Jacoby slipped into unconsciousness pretty quickly and was understandably distracted by being attacked! In the hospital, he had no such distractions-- he was more likely to remember something like a smell. Seeing Laura's face in the coffee cup serves many purposes.
For one, I think that coffee as an archtypal symbol of TP is a badge of a common link with the people. EVERYONE drank coffee. And because Laura was fighting the good/evil in her and she appears in the coffe cup, this shows that EVERYONE has to deal with this good/evil thing at some point.
Also, the white of the cup and the black of the coffee poi
e of the cup and the black of the coffee show the light/dark, bob/mike, cooper/earle, white lodge/black lodge battle. (And stylistically, those colors echo the waiting room's floor.
Finally, there's the Buddhist circle of life which the rim forms (and Lynch certainly subscribes to).

okay, I've only done one verse so as not to lose MY mind.
I have retained most of the original lyrics as they simply cannot be
improved (?) upon.
Here's Laura who lives life on a tear
Had all the men from here to there
But Maddy, although she's no fool -ah
Remained a virgin in Missoula.
What a Lynchian pair!
But they're cousins, identical cousins !
And you'll find
They laugh alike, they cry alike,
At times they even DIE alike,
You will lose your mind!
(and soul, and life, and Nielsen ratings)
When cousins are two of a kind!
My humble apologies to Patty Duke.

Now to settle some disagreements jasonhal@usc.edu (Jason Hall) 1992-02-26 17:38
1. All the episodes are going to be released in the United STates on laser disc in a set (just like they were in Japan) sometime withing the next four months. I called Worldvision and an officail there told me he was working the deal now to make it happen, and it should come out in the next four months. Now to settle yet more disagreements on the board: 2. Go back and watch the episodes if you don't believe me, but this is fact. Dr. Jacoby was mistaken when he told Coop he smelled scortched engine oil in the hospital when Jauque was killed. When Jacoby was hypnotized in a later episode, he states that he did not smell scortched engine oil in the hospital but at the park when he was attacked. Coop tells him to stick to what happened in the hospital. There was no engine oil smell at the hospital. Also,Twin Peaks: Behind the Scenes (a book) has a quote from Mark Frost saying that it was Leland possessed by Bob who attacked Jacoby. So Leland/Bob attacked Jacoby, and a saddened and enraged Leland killed Jauque because he thought that was who killed Laura.(Proof is when he is arrested and questioned about it, and he breaks down about how said he is and that yes he did kill Jauque because he thought that was who killed his daughter.) But I do believe that Bob was aware of what Leland was doing when he killed Jauque. Reason one: Leland's hair turned white overnight, right after he killed Jauque, the color of Bob's hair. I believe this happened because Leland himself had killed, with no interference from Bob. Also, in the script for the movie coming out, it is not Leo who hits Jauqe with the bottle, is is Leland/Bob because Jaques sees him standing outside the window at the cabin. Leland hides, and Leo comes out, sees Jauque lying on the ground bleeding, and worriedly takes off in his red corvette. Then Leland comes in and rapes Ronnette and takes both girls to the train car. So Bob really didn't mind Leland killing Jauque becaue it protected him. 3. The vision of the horse is just an affect from the drug. Leland was drugging Sarah with holoparadol (the blue dye drug) that the one armed man was using, and that Wyndom Earle used to drug Caroline (read coop's auto- biography). The drug probably has something to do with the lodge since it was also put in Ronette's IV at the hospital by Bob to try and kill her (I don't think it was Leland though, since the guards said no one came in or out, Bob probably possessed one of the guards to do it) In the movie, Leland drugs Sarah and she has the same vision of the horse. (which would actually take place before the one on the show). Now that that is settled, let's go on to something else:) Hope this helped. jason jasonhal@usc.edu[src]

Yes, but death was in the area, as it were, since Maddy gets it a few

Strange. The BBC showed the first of the final two episodes two days after it had first aired in the US. The last episodes were aired in the US after a long delay because the BBC had caught up rapidly by showing both series without a break, except for a couple of weeks at christmas. Its a long time ago now, but I know RTE was ahead of the BBC all along and I recollect seeing it there ahead of seeing it on the BBC. I could be wrong there, its to ong ago, maybe the Beeb caught up. I do know that RTE showed the one 2 hour episode while the BBC showed it as two so they would both have finished in the same week even if RTE ended up a week behind the BBC which is possible with the crazy TP schedule we had at the time. Sorry if I confused you but the basic purpose of the post was just that we got a two hour final episode here, as in the States, unlike the uncharacterisitc butchering done by the Beeb in splitting it. Not that I'm conversant in heroin slang, but isn't it also
"white tiger."??
Also, tho I picked up on the Biblical metaphor, remember that
earlier in the episode, Maddy comments, "I'll come GALLOPING
back often." Maddy, natch, is about to die when Sarah sees
the horse. I always thought the horse vision had something to
do with Maddy and her "galloping" comment.
Wonder if it could have had something to do with Laura's dead
horse, re: the secret Diary.??

I think Andy said this sometimes:
"There's a town called "White Horse", and Leo was in prison there."
Yes, Leo Johnson was there behind "Swedish Curtains" {as we say here :-)}
the day Theresa Banks was killed. (February, 2nd, rite?) A key step in the
proof of Leo not being the killer of Laura Palmer, 'coz Coop said the killer
of Theresa is the same as the one, who killed Leland's daughter...

Where was Lynch going? lwv26@cas.org (Larry W. Virden) 1992-02-28 10:13
Has anyone come up with any references, in video, interviews, etc. as to where the story line of TP was heading? I was just listening to a cassette I made of one of the last episodes (where Coop and Annie met for a drink, Audry was recruited by her father to work on the save the weasle campaign, etc.) and there were some words by Annie to the effect "I may do things you don't expect or that you think are strange". I was just wondering where they were going with this. -- Larry W. BUT HEY, STOP THE PRESSES!!!!!!!!!!
This isn't necessarily negative--it could (is?) the truth--that evil lurks in all.
And the end of Peaks with coop seemingly getting possessed by Bob. How completely sad that the pillar of moral goodness would succumb to Bob.
(SEEMINGLY because maybe it was just cooper's form that became possessed and his spirit lives on...or maybe this is THE MOST OPTIMISTIC THING TO HAPPEN TO COOPER AND TWIN PEAKS AND THE WHOLE OF HUMANITY---namely that cooper let in the evil in order to conquer it ("We all must pass through the black lodge on the path to perfection."))
In any case, you may be wondering what this has to do with SEXSEXSEXSEX....
This is my point (and I sure hope this hasn't been covered already...I haven't seen it): What was the breaking point for coop? What brought upon his downfall? Answer: SEXSEXSEXSEXSEXSEXSEXSEXSEXSEXSEXSEXSEXSEXSEXSEX!
It's just kind of a weird Lynchian thing--this evil sex combination. I mean look at Velvet: "Hit me,
PLEASE!" and the best: "He but his DISEASE in me."
Masters and Johnson it ain't.
Even Eraserhead has the product of SEXSEXSEXSEX be a mutant blob.
Wild at Heart has the violence and fire and SEXSEXSEX thing goin' for it.
And cooper was the most pure perfect person on Peaks (he even staved off a naked Audry in his bed!) but as soon as he dived into the Flesh i.e. had sex with Annie, he fell. And the Giant even was warning him "No. No." But coop didn't listen.
What's up with Lynch? Why this dark view of sex?

Short TP:FWWM preview at the UK Full Showing of Peaks at the
Prince Charles theatre yesterday.
MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD !!!!!
Phew !!!, just back from London from the Full Peaks showing.
There was as widely rumoured a short preview of the forthcoming movie.
About 10 minutes in all I'm afraid. It also said UK release was in the
Autumn sometime.
Basically form what I saw in the few clips we did get was ....
Section I: Cooper and Laura's Diary Stuff, and some earlier scenes.
=========
There was a very early clip of Ben Horne and Eileen Hayward. It
involved a non-disabled Eileen having a MAJOR row with Ben and speeding
off in a car and then the scene ended. I presume this is an expansion
on the Ben/Eileen/Who is Donna's Father storyline. I guess there is an
accident and Doc Hayward blames Ben.....
A few music over scenes. Looks like some new Julee Cruise/
David Lynch/Angelo Badalamenti musci for the soundtrack (Yeh !!!).
They were a Leyland watching a person kill someone. There was a flash
of a file Coop was holding with a partially obscured name on it.
It was Ther************. I presume Theresa Banks. Thus, who the
hell was the person who killed her. Windom Earle is all that springs
to my mind here.
Also a short clip of Coop on an island. Possibly the Mexican
one mentioned in the Coop book. The bar looked Mexican(ish) and there
was a parting shot of a chess board.
Section II: The much commented 2 weeks before Laura dies.
==========
Not a lot actually. I thought this was supposed to be the
bulk content of the movie. Maybe it is going to be significant ?
A Harry/Josie intimate scene, though only 15 secs worth. It
switched to outside and we saw what appeared to be Andrew.
A couple of parties with Leo, Bobby, Jacques, Ronnette. It
looked like Leo's cabin in the woods. Also a couple of Laura/Bob
flashback/dream type scenes. That was about all. Somewhat disappointed.
Post Twin Peaks (TV)
====================
Only 2 scenes.
A waiting room (Lodges). All the usual waiting room people.
Plus Josie and Hawk. Josie I can understand but why Hawk ?
Second scene. A funeral. we did not get to see the name on the
gravestone. People who were visibly upset were
Audrey,Harry, Albert,Annie and Andy (surprisingly).
Summary:
=======
It was all very cobbled together. Looked like a rush job for
the showing. It answered a few questions and each answer created
3 more. Looks like Andrew was the face at the Window. The funeral scene
tried to obscure the fact that it was Coop's. But I think that is
too obvious and is a fake insinuation.
Why Hawk/Joise in the Lodge waiting room.
That's about all I can remember for now. When more comes, I'll
post that. I'm away to bed now for 48hrs too sleep off the doughnuts
(which were scrummy) and the fact that I'm plain knackered.
Regards for now,
Neil

I haven't heard anything about DHP #28. I'm not sure, but I don't think Dark Horse owns Cheval Noir so I would assume it is new material. Then again, we all know what happens when you assume.[src]
