The book "My Life, My Tapes" implies that Windom was taken by the Black
Lodge before the Caroline incident, and that he destroyed Caroline in a
manner similar to Leland's destruction of Laura." <-

Some how I'm forced to belive this... I wasn't able to recognize some of
the faces in the last twenty minutes and there was something about "see
you in 25 years" or something... I can't remember. Though it's possible
for Windom to have been taken to the lodge before it doesn't clean
anything up. Nor does the fact that he destroyed Caroline in a similar
way... infact, this makes life more confusing for us who haven't read the
book yet.

Re: Twin Peeks? brian@hplvec.LVLD.HP.COM (Brian Wood) 1992-07-30 09:48
Twin Peeks is indeed an adult movie. I taped it off of the satellite
channel 'Spice'. Whether it is available in XXX, I don't know.
Spice shows only X movies or XXX with the hard-core parts removed.
In any event, don't waste your time unless you just have to have
everything that remotely sounds like our favorite show. Twin Peeks
has absolutely nothing to do with Twin Peaks, and is, in fact,
not even a very good adult movie. Like many adult movies that
get their titles from a play on words, Twin Peeks simply refers
to portions of a female's anatomy.

Still, it's fun reading. Don't know who posted it or where it's

fwwm script reposted volwerk@fys.ruu.nl (Martin Volwerk) 1992-07-31 00:10
Hi Netters,

I was looking through my News directory and found the posted
fwwm-"script". It is reposted here.

Greetings Martin.

Well I know y'all have been waiting for weeks, but I'm sorry. This is the
first chance I've gotten to finally post some info. I have in front of
me the shooting draft to "Twin Peaks 'Fire Walk With Me, Teresa Banks and
the Last Seven Days of Laura Palmer." I'm now willing to share some of
it with you. Ahead will be major spoilers, so beware. Stop reading now
unless you are so hooked on the whole Twin PEaks thing that you cannot
wait a few measly months to see the whole movie for yourself.
By the way, some of you have asked where I got the script. I got
it at a store in Harvard Square, Cambridge, MA. I'm not exactly sure
how legal this is (I can't see how it could be legal) so I think I'll
refrain from revealing the name of the store. OK, let's rock.

Here we go:
OK well the script is divided into three parts, like I've read in previous
postings on the network. The first section is medium length (pp. 1-40).
It involves the death of Teresa Banks. Opening scene: "Teresa Banks' body
wrapped in plastic floating through Hells Canyon, drifting along in Wind
River." Then it jumps to Gordon Cole and two new FBI officers, Agent Chester
Desmond and Sam Stanley. Here is a really cool scene involving communication
between the agents using a code. Stanley and Desmond go to investigate
Banks' murder. Here they have trouble with the local lawmen (which was
probably what prompted Cooper to have his talk with Truman in the first
episode about who is really in charge when the bureau is called in). It
starts out OK but then gets weird. The ring comes back into play, there
is a mound of dirt, a golf ball (Leland liked golf) and finally one of the
agents disapppears, which is why Cooper is brought in.
Here we switch to Cooper. He is talking with Diane, but it is unclear
whether we actually see her because she doesn't say anything (Man I hope we
get to see her). Now it gets really weird. There is an agent named Phillip
Jeffries, and from what I can tell, he is a time-space traveler (possibly
the character that David Bowie will play). He tells about a meeting above
a convenience store. Then it switches to the meeting. Everyone is there:
"In the foreground the Man from Another Place (Mike) and Bob sit at a
formica table. Behind them on plastic torn chairs huddle Mrs. Tremond and
her grandson. Two Bigh Woodsmen with full beards sit quietly." It says
the whole scene is subtitled, so I assume we have more of the backwords
talking. They talk strangely for a while and then Mike and Bob say "Fire
Walk With Me" and then a circel of fire appears. Bob crawls through it into
the Red Room and Mike yells and leaps in after him.
After this, the second and biggest part comes on, the last week of
Laura Palmer (pp. 40-124). I haven't read all of this part, but I'll
summarize what I know for you. Cooper was right. Laura did have a bad
habit. It turns out that that habit was very very bad. In every scene
she takes a line or two of cocaine and any pills she can get her hands on.
Donna helps Laura with her homework, Bobby loves Laura, Laura sees James
behind Bobby's back, and Mike is going out with Donna. Laura finds pages
missing from her secret diary. She panicks and goes to see Harold Smith.
She tells him she thinks Bob took the pages and that Bob has been having
he since she was 12. Laura says Bob wants to be her or he will kill her.
Next day: Mrs. Tremond and her grandson help Laura. She goes home
and finds Bob looking for her diary in her room. SHe runs outside. Minutes
later Leland comes out of the house. That night, a picture given to Laura
as a present from Mrs. Tremond magically reveals the Red Room. In it
Cooper tells Laura not to take the ring, Teresa's ring, which has symbols
identical to those of Owl Cave. We come out of the picture and see
Laura in bed. She wakes and looks next to her. "She discovers Annie
Blackburn lying in bed with her." She has blood around her mouth and she
says, "My name is Annie. I've been with Laura and Dale. The good Dale is
in the lodge and he can't leave. Write it in your diary." Aniie disappears
and the ring is in Laura's hand.
Next day: James says he missed Laura last night. Leo abuses Shelly
and talks to Bobby about a drug deal. Jacques Renault enters the deal.
Laura and Donna hitch up with a few truckers. They see Ronette Pulaski
and Bob's voice tells Laura that Donna is going to get into the situation.
Laura is afraid for Donna and tries to get her out of there.
Next day: Ed and Nadine. Truman and Josie. Donna and Laura discuss
last night. Leland and Gerard Gerard says to Laura, "It's him. It's your
father," but she can't hear him because Leland is making so much noise with
his car. Leland has flashback to when he was involved with Teresa with
Flesh World Magazine. Teresa figures out that Leland is Laura's father
(probably why he killed her). Laura has flashback and begins to put the
pieces together. Leland has flashback to when he killed Teresa Banks.
Next day: Johnny's birthday party. Ben gives cocaine to Laura, and
Laura says she would do more than just kiss him for it. Night: Bobby and
Laura driving and snorting. They go into woods to pick up drugs. A
deputy from Deer Meadow brings the cocaine for Jacques. Laura grabs the
coke, the deputy pulls out his gun, and Bobby shoots him.
Next day: Bobby discovers that the coke is really laxative. Laura
talks to Jacoby. Night: Sarah is drugged - sees white horse. Bob enters
Laura's room and puts hand between her legs. Bob turns into Leland.
She screams and passes out.
Next day: "Last morning": At breakfast table Leland asks Laura what
is wrong. Laura says to stay away. "He knows she knows and he knows
what he has to do." "Last night": Laura says she hates asparagus at dinner.
She goes to see Bobby. Laura goes home and snorts a line or three. James
calls at 9:30. He comes by. Leland sees Laura jump on his bike. They
drive. Laura screams with agony, says "James I love you" and runs away at
the corner of Sparkwood and 21. Laura runs to Packard Logging Road and
meets Jacques, Leo, and Ronette. They go to Jacques' cabin. Jacques
ties Laura and Ronette up. Both are half-naked. Waldo is screeching.
Jacques stradles Laura and hurts her. Leo puts a One Eyed Jacks $1000
poker chip in her mouth. Leland appears. Jacques decks Leo. Leland
grabs bottle and knocks out Jacques. Leo takes off. Leland rapes Ronette.
Laura gets hysterical. Log Lady is off in woods listening. "She hears]
distant screams. The camera moves down her leg to reveal her tattoo, beet
red and burning." Philip Gerard runs like a madman up to Jacques' cabin.
Leland marches the girls through woods. Gerard arrives too late. Leland
and girls arrive at train car. Leland wraps twine around Laura's arm,
bending her arms back. Laura sees herself turn into Bob. Laura says, "
"No, you have to kill me...No you can't have me. Kill me." Gerard arrives
at train car. Ronette opens the door a little, but then she is hit and
flies over Gerard and knocked unconscious. Gerard listens to the sounds
of murder inside the car. Laura screams. Knife enters flesh. Bob screams.
Bloody knife goes through the air. Leland screams. Gerard laughs and says,
"That's his own daughter you're killing." Leland/Bob lowers the plastic
shrouded Laura into the river. Leland stumbles into Glastonbury Grove.
He enters the Red Room. Gerard and MFAP sit facing him. Leland stops and
divides. "One half becomes Bob - opaque. The other half floats up and
becomes Leland - transparent. Bob reaches up and grab's Leland's wound.
Bob heals Leland's wound. Gerard and TMFAP speak together "Bob, you're
not going home without me. I want all my garmonbozia (corn)."
Well that's the end of the second part. Here's the bad news: The
third part, the one we've all been waiting for, is 3 pages long. I was
really pissed when I saw that. I can only hope that as the filming
evolves, they will add length to it. Well anyway, here it is. Annie is
brought on stretcher to emergency room. TMFAP says to Cooper in Red Room,
"Is it future? Or is it past?...Do you know who I am?...I am The Arm...And
I sound like this..." He makes an Indian whooping noise.
Cooper: Where is the ring?
MFAP: Someone else has it now.
Cooper: That would indicate that it's the future.
MFAP: The later events have never been kept a secret.
Cooper: Where am I? And how can I leave?
MFAP: You are here and there is no place to go...But home!
Hospital Room-night
Annie: My name is Annie. I've been with Laura and Dale. The good Dale is
in the lodge and he can't leave. Write it in your diary.
The nurse listens and takes Teresa's/Laura's ring off Annie's finger. She
leaves and puts the ring on herself.
Hotel Room - night. Doc and Truman watch bathroom door.
Truman: Coop...Coop...
Doc: Cooper are you alright?
No response. Truman breaks open door.
Cooper lies on floor Mirroe is shattered with blood over it and sink. Cooper
smiles strangely.
Cooper: I slipped and hit my head on the mirror. The glass broke as it
struck my head. It struck me as funny, Harry. Do you understand me, Harry,
it struck me as funny.
Doc: You are going right back to bed.
Cooper: But I haven't brushed my teeth yet. (Smiles)
Black Lodge/Red Room - Laura is sitting in a chair. As the end credits
begin...
We move in to see that Laura is sitting in Cooper's lap in the same chair.

The End. Well I hope y'all enjoyed that. If anyone has any questions or
would like to discuss the implications of the script, I'm here. Also,
I am only reporting on the shooting draft. I know a lot could change before
the final prduct is made.

Re: fwwm script reposted (SPOILERS!) lindgren@sics.se (Thomas Lindgren) 1992-07-31 02:58
OK, there are really, really major spoilers in this message for Fire Walk
With Me. Especially towards the end. I have tried to mark up where the
script differed from the movie, and cut away the rest.

In article <1992Jul31.071035.5533@fys.ruu.nl> volwerk@fys.ruu.nl (Martin Volwerk) writes:

   Here we go, Spoiler City:

"In the foreground the Man from Another Place (Mike) and Bob sit at a
formica table. Behind them on plastic torn chairs huddle Mrs. Tremond and
her grandson. Two Bigh Woodsmen with full beards sit quietly." It says
the whole scene is subtitled, so I assume we have more of the backwords
talking. They talk strangely for a while and then Mike and Bob say "Fire
Walk With Me" and then a circel of fire appears. Bob crawls through it into
the Red Room and Mike yells and leaps in after him.

The circle of fire wasn't in the movie.

She tells him she thinks Bob took the pages and that Bob has been having
he since she was 12. Laura says Bob wants to be her or he will kill her.

A bit more was added to this part.

Laura and Donna hitch up with a few truckers. They see Ronette Pulaski

Still there ...

and Bob's voice tells Laura that Donna is going to get into the situation.

But that was cut. Instead, there are some strange comments about Donna
wearing Laura's `stuff'.

The scene with Laura and Leland having flashbacks was modified a bit.

Next day: Johnny's birthday party. Ben gives cocaine to Laura, and
Laura says she would do more than just kiss him for it.

Removed.

Next day: Bobby discovers that the coke is really laxative. Laura
   talks to Jacoby.

Removed.

Night: Sarah is drugged - sees white horse. Bob enters
Laura's room and puts hand between her legs. Bob turns into Leland.
   She screams and passes out.

This scene was expanded substantially.

Jacques stradles Laura and hurts her. Leo puts a One Eyed Jacks $1000
poker chip in her mouth. Leland appears. Jacques decks Leo. Leland
grabs bottle and knocks out Jacques. Leo takes off. Leland rapes Ronette.

Substantially modified (also, the earlier events of the day were somewhat
different).

Laura gets hysterical. Log Lady is off in woods listening. "She hears]
distant screams. The camera moves down her leg to reveal her tattoo, beet
   red and burning."

Removed.

   Laura says, "
"No, you have to kill me...No you can't have me. Kill me."

Cut, I think. I'm not certain, though.

   Gerard listens to the sounds
of murder inside the car. Laura screams. Knife enters flesh. Bob screams.
Bloody knife goes through the air. Leland screams. Gerard laughs and says,
"That's his own daughter you're killing."

This part was cut, but the scene below makes more sense with it. (In the
movie, it isn't clear how Leland was wounded.)

The spoken part was only "I want all my garmonbozia" in the movie.

That's essentially where the movie ends! The final scene is with Laura laughing
in the Red Room and Cooper beside her, touching her shoulder. There is an angel
floating in the air, high up. So I guess some viewers will stay pissed :-)

(The 'Do you know ...' up to the whooping was put in as another scene, but the
cut with Annie is gone.)

The above was NOT in the movie. (Just as well, I think; that part of the script
felt a bit weak ... or do I mean, `too clear'? :-) ... to me.)

So for the followers of the ongoing saga, there is a way out of the Black
Lodge or Red Room or wherever Cooper is, if Laura wrote Annie's words down.
Since Cooper didn't notice that bit of information when HE read her secret
diary, I guess those pages were torn out. Perhaps they will be located later?
Or maybe it was written down elsewhere, or something.

In general, I felt the movie raised more questions than it resolved, w.r.t.
what is really going on. There are some new clues given though: time seems to
be going backwards in the Black Lodge/Red Room, for instance. That would give
a new meaning to, 'See you in 25 years', perhaps.

Also, does 'garmonbozia' mean CORN? Then whoever translated the movie to
Swedish really screwed up. There, it was given
as " ... garmonbozia (sorrow and pain)" in the subtitles. Hmh.

Regards,
Thomas

Here are the dates again for some of the TP characters, posted originally
by Howard Pitchon (Thanks, HP!).

Laura: 7/22/72 Sun in Cancer, Moon in Sagg, Venus in Gemini

Dr. Jacoby: 1/30/34 Sun in Aquarius, Moon in Leo, Venus in Aquarius.

Josie Packard: 9/2/62 Sun in Virgo, Moon and Venus in Libra.

Ben Horne: 8/4/40 Sun and Moon in Leo, Venus in Cancer.

Catherine: 11/4/40 Sun in Scorpio, Moon in Cap, Venus in Libra.

Dale Cooper: 4/19/54 Sun in Aries, Moon in Scorpio, Venus in Taurus

Harry Truman : 5/13/50 Sun in Taurus, Moon in Aries, Venus in Aries.

The one that I would like to see, and which is missing, is Bobby Briggs.

Howard said there are also dates for Hawk, James Hurly, Doc Hayward, Pete, Ed
and Norma -- Howard, can you go ahead and post those also?

The interesting thing about the dates I've looked at so far is how closely
they fit, astrologically, with the characters as they are depicted in the
series. It's much too much so to be coincidence -- someone associated with
Lynch or TP is an excellent astrologer and must have chosen the dates.

Since no times of birth are given, and also no locations, it's not possible
to work up charts showing the rising sign, the houses and the house positions
of planets. So all we can work with here is simply planets in signs, and the
aspects between them. Even with only that information, however, the birth
dates are a close fit to the characters.

If any of you TPeakers out there are astrologers, give a guess as to the
rising sign of Coop, Truman, Laura, Josie, based on their appearance.

I'm guessing Pisces rising for Laura Palmer ----beautiful eyes, drug problem,
death by water. What do you think?

According to the Access Guide to TP Leland was a Pisces--hmmmm.
Though there was no dates given for him. Does anyone have them
on hand--were they listed on the TP collectors cards? And
speaking of the collectors cards can they still be purchased--I
have the 3 main books, the Diane Tapes, but not the cards.

I have the cards. I don't know hte rising signs, etc., but I'm sure some
enterprising peakster out there knows astrology and can tell us.

Bobby Briggs - 12/10/72 (Sagittarius)

Tommy 'Hawk' Hill - 9/16/50 (Virgo)

James Hurley - 1/01/73 (Capricorn)

Will 'Doc' Hayward- 5/25/29 (Gemini)

Pete Martell - 6/28/34 (Cancer)

Norma Jennings - 9/30/50 (Libra)

Also, from card #71, labelled 'Production Notes,' I quote the following:

"A practicing astrologer for over 20 years, Bill Herbst contributed
to this set by bringing his insight and experience to Twin Peaks.
After careful analysis of the character profiles, Herbst determined
each character's birth date and zodiac sign."

This shot past too quickly for me to be sure... but I think that the biker
from which the heroine steals the motorcycle in "Buffy the Vampire Slayer"
was Eric Da Re (Leo Johnson).

One thing that makes this more possible was that both TP and Buffy had the
same casting director, Johanna Ray, to whom, if memory serves, Da Re is
somehow related.

At a bookstore last night I came across a magazine called
Film Threat. Their current issue is devoted almost totally to
Twin Peaks and Fire Walk With Me. They have extensive info on the
making of the film, interviews with various cast members (off
the top of my head, I can only remember one: the guy who plays
the Little Man From Another Place), a complete list of Peaks
episodes with summaries and broadcast information, and other
goodies. As soon as I can scrape together my pennies, I'm gonna
buy the mag myself! Looks like a must for any dedicated Peakser.

Just Another Crazy Lynch Mob: Funny how the media perceives 300,000
viewers in Japan as a huge success (ie. 30% who subscribe to the
cable just for TP and 900,000 total viewers). In the US, TP
consistantly had a 5-8 point viewership with each point representing
over 900,000 viewers, or about 4,000,000. Just more numbers games by
an increasingly tabloid press.

Is FWWM opening Aug. 16 or Aug 28? Is it just the 16th in WA?

Answers to various astrology postings:

Per the Cooper tapes, Audrey turns 18 on Aug 24, 1990, making her
birthday Aug. 24, 1972. Sun: Virgo; Moon: Aquarius; Venus in Cancer.
Makes her mentally active, but few may recognize it because of her
reticent nature; intuitive and idealistic; interested in protecting
her loved ones. With Venus in Cancer, one may also become involved
with an unpopular or lowly job ("hospitality girl" at OEJ's).

Lou Crago re-posted the dates for Laura, Jacoby, Josie, Ben,
Catherine, Coop, and Harry, and asks for Howard Pitchon to give
dates for any others that are available. Howard gave it to Summer
Storm (me) and here goes:

Hawk: 9/16/50. Sun:Virgo; Moon: Scorpio; Venus:Virgo. Makes him
mentally active, thoughtful, hardworking, and a lover of art and
literature. He faces problems alone, may work as a policeman. Needs
security and respect in love.

James Hurley: 1/1/73. Sun: Capricorn; Moon:Sagitarius; Venus: Sag.
Makes him have many obstacles in paths to goals. Quiet, serious,
supresses problems, loves independence & freedom. Will often change
residences. Quick to anger, but forgiving. May love more than one
person at the same time. Wants to travel.

Pete Martel: 6/28/34. Sun: Cancer; Moon: Aquarius; Venus: Gemini.
Makes him sensitive, emotional, loves his family. People like him,
eccentric, a humanitarian, a true liberal. Sociable.

Ed Hurley: 10/26/50. Sun: Scorpio; Moon: Taurus; Venus: Libra. Inner
convictions and emotions run deep. Conservative, secretive, good
disposition. Likely to live in a private world of peace, beauty and
harmony.

Norma Jennings: 9/30/50. Sun: Libra; Moon: Gemini. Venus: Virgo.
Loves beauty and harmony. Will marry early in life. Good friend;
peacemaker. Charming. Needs security in love. May become involved
with someone who is cold and cruel.

Lynch and Innocent Lovers crago_l@cubldr.colorado.edu 1992-08-04 10:51
Pardon me for bringing up Wild at Heart if it has already been talked to
death, but I just watched it for the first time and have a few comments.
It seems that Lynch's most obvious pattern is putting *innocents* into
a collision course with cruel and harsh reality .. in Blue Velvet,
in TP. That's the whole way he creates texture and tension.

Now, in Wild at Heart, it seems to me he is re-defining innocence. It's
the same pattern of putting the Innocents at risk -- but the characters
of Sailor and Lula are given all sorts of characteristics that we
conventionally think of as NOT applying to Innocents. Everything from
Lula's constant gum-chewing, to their bone-rattling rutting, to puking
on the floor and not cleaning it up, to the highest expression of love
being an Elvis song, to murder, imprisonment, etc., etc. -- all these
are things that symbolize in our culture LACK of innocence, lack of
virtue, lack of quality. Yet Lynch has set up the story, and especially
the rest of the characters, so that Sailor and Lula remain the
central icon of the Innocent Lovers.

It's rather amazing that Lynch can take characters that, in any other
context, would be cheap, sleazy, perhaps disgusting, and bring them
through as pristine and lovable as Dorothy and Toto.

Thought provoking questions on the series! 9207987h@levels.unisa.edu.au 1992-08-04 20:30
Thanks to all those who answered my questions on the final TP episode
and Windom Earle. It helped clear up a few things!

Here goes a few more questions!

1. What was the reason behind Windom seeking out the Black Lodge? Was
it just plain curiousity or did he have some other "darker" reason?

2. What WAS the Black Lodge? - A place of evil or did it serve some
other purpose? (Black Lodge = Hell??)

3. We all saw Cooper smash his head against his bathroom mirror
indicating a "possession" (Bob I assume).
Does this mean the "good" Cooper is trapped in the Black Lodge?
Does this mean that when Bob possessed Leland, the "good" Leland
was trapped in the Black Lodge as well? (Although it seems Bob went
in and out of Lelands body when he chose to)

4. Who was the Log Lady? (ie. her background) Where did she get this
knack of correctly predicting the future? (in her cryptic way)

5. I'm pretty sure that the giant was a "good" guy - why therefore do we
(Cooper) see him in the Black Lodge in the final episode?
How about the "Little Man From Another Place" - was he a goodie?

6. We see Windom Earle virtually explode in that last episode as well,
which I assume is Bob taking his soul - Why did Bob do this?

Well I guess that will do for now. I'm not sure if any of these
questions have been asked before, so if anyone can answer them or just
give their own view I'd appreciate it!

Daniel. [Trying to keep up the interest and satisfy my curiosity at the
         same time!]

I believe that David Lynch charecter Gordon Cole does make an appeaence
with Mr. Lynch acting, and I also believe that that David Bowie's
charecter is only in the film for a few minutes (like David Lynch), but
his charecter is one of the most interesting charecters. I think he plays
an agent of the federal bureau. That is all I know until Aug 28

Fire Walk Article gkull@sumax.seattleu.edu (Greg Kull) 1992-08-10 12:10
In the Sunday, August 9, 1992 Seattle P-I/Times there was two pages of
articles on the FWWM movie. This can be found in the Entertainment section.
It discusses the resurgent (or continuing?) TP-mania occuring in the North
Bend area. It discussed the filming, and the upcoming events happening in
the area. A preview of the movie is happening in the area (sorry, don't have
the time or date, left the article at home), as well as a reception for the
stars at the Snoqualmie Winery (by invite only?). If you can get the P-I
(check your local newstand or library) lookup this article.

Windom was seeking power and was crazy enough to think he could control it
instead of vice-versa.

The Black Lodge is a center of power twisted to evil ends -- the opposite
of the White Lodge. What is confusing is the White Lodge and the Black Lodge
are physically juxtaposed.

The wife of someone who was taken by the Bob (and/or the Black Lodge). Her
husband's soul is trapped in the log she carries and can communicate to her.
The things it communicates includes future events.

You didn't see him in the Black Lodge -- you saw him in the White Lodge.
They are the same place, but not the same place.

Same as the Giant -- although the LMFAP wasn't just one person, he had an
evil twin (doppelgaenger) in the Black Lodge.

Bob already had Windom's soul. Bob was just demonstrating his power over
Windom by subjecting his soul to torture.

Bob does this because he is Bob. What other reason does he need?

...and so spaketh 9207987h@levels.unisa.edu with dimensious postulation
upon the subject of Thought provoking questio...

Daniel,

I'll give you my impression of what the answers should be. Bear in mind
they are surely not the only answers.

9>1. What was the reason behind Windom seeking out the Black Lodge? Was
9> it just plain curiousity or did he have some other "darker" reason?
Windom Earle wanted the POWER the black lodge could provide him with. He
was a meglomaniac, to say the least...

9>2. What WAS the Black Lodge? - A place of evil or did it serve some
9> other purpose? (Black Lodge = Hell??)
It is the YANG side of the universal balance (YIN/YANG) and represented
the bad/evil side of the balance.

9>3. We all saw Cooper smash his head against his bathroom mirror
9> indicating a "possession" (Bob I assume).
9> Does this mean the "good" Cooper is trapped in the Black Lodge?
9> Does this mean that when Bob possessed Leland, the "good" Leland
9> was trapped in the Black Lodge as well? (Although it seems Bob went
9> in and out of Lelands body when he chose to)
The 'posession' causes a type of state of schophrenia, where the good side
has no idea or recollection of the posessed sides actions. That is to say
the concience of the good side is 'put on hold' while the bad side does
it's thing. It is possible that the good-side, as a whole, could be
released from the black lodge, but I'm not sure about that ...

9>4. Who was the Log Lady? (ie. her background) Where did she get this
9> knack of correctly predicting the future? (in her cryptic way)
That one's not too difficult, but it is weird. The Log-Lady, or Margaret
Lanterman, does not predict the future. Her log does and she mearly
listens to it. I'll explain:
Her husband was a logger, a friend of Pete, who was killed in a
mysterious fire after notifying Margaret that there was something wrong in
the woods. She said she could smell pine tar at the time (which smells
like burnt engine oil - BOB's smell). It is possible his spirit was
captured and entraped into the wood of the log, just as, it would seem,
Josie's soul was trapped in the knob of the bed-side table when she died
in Harry's arms.
My theory is that she is told what is happening by he husband, from the
other side. Margret is not herself psychic, just sensative.

9>5. I'm pretty sure that the giant was a "good" guy - why therefore do
9>we (Cooper) see him in the Black Lodge in the final episode?
9> How about the "Little Man From Another Place" - was he a goodie?
They are both Bad AND good. "Dupleganger!", said the "Little Man From
Another Place". A dupleganger is an exact anti-replica, ie. has the same
look with the opposite feel. I feel they are both BEYOND good and evil,
thus they are both yet neither.

9>6. We see Windom Earle virtually explode in that last episode as well,
9> which I assume is Bob taking his soul - Why did Bob do this?
Windom Earle tried to take the soul of Cooper by force/coersion. The
creatures that are BOB can only be invited into a host. That was BOB's
problem with Laura. She would not invite him in, just play around with
him.
Earle showed ignorance of this and as a result was punished (pretty
rough rules when you play with the 'devil'). I'm not sure if BOB took his
soul (which I doubt, even though he says this, as unless Earle had
accepted BOB's offer to be a host, he would be playing AGAINST his own
rules) or removed it causing a violent death.

There you go Daniel. Hope you understand my answers. Just reply E-MAil me
if you don't and I'll clarify (hopefully).

This has been, for me, probably the most enduringly annoying and disappointing
aspect of the finale. After all the wonderful imagery Maj. Briggs spouts
in the re-telling of his dream to Bobby -- radiant, dazzling marble
constructions and the like -- I had kind of expected that the White Lodge
would be something a bit more lavish (and DISTINCTIVE)... not just the same
old curtains and patterned linoleum!

In the intrim between the end of the series and the broadcast of the finale,
a friend of a friend had come up with his own scenario of what the expected
White Lodge/Black Lodge encounter would be like... The imagery and evocative
descriptions of his creation were infinitely more satisfying than what we
all eventually saw! <Hurmph!>

Oh well...

Yes, the soundtrack is out in stores! I just picked it up from Tower Records
and am listening to it now. The music is different from the Twin Peaks
soundtrack, but of a similar style.

> >Also what kinda stuff is on it, and how different is it from the orignal TP

Here's a list of the track titles, not that they would mean much unless
you've seen the movie, but I hear we (in the US) won't be able to see it
until the end of August.

Theme From Twin Peaks - Fire Walk With Me
The Pine Float
Sycamore Trees (vocal by Jimmy Scott)
Don't Do Anything (I Wouldn't Do)
A Real Indication (Thought Gang/vocal by Angelo Badalamenti)
Questions in a World of Blue (vocal by Julie Cruise)
The Pink Room
The Black Dog Runs At Night (Thought Gang/vocal by Angelo Badalamenti)
Best Friends
Moving Through Time
Montage From Twin Peaks
Girl Talk / Birds In Hell / Lara Palmer's Theme / Falling
The Voice of Life

Unfortunately, Julie Cruise only sings on one track of this album.

Enjoy.

Someone recently read to me an article (I think in Entertainment
Weekly or Cinefantastique, but I'm not sure) which said the audience at
Cannes this year booed _Fire Walk With Me_ off the screen. I was
initially surprised that the audience at the festival would be so
rude, but that mental sensation soon faded. Now, I wonder, what about
the film could provoke such a hostile reaction?

paraphernalia? "r. ramjee" <r..ramjee@canrem.com> 1992-08-11 15:02
(I hope this message is making its way out...could someone let me
know? Thanks.)

With the pending release of "Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me" just over
two weeks away, it occurs to me that I've never fully acquired the "Twin
Peaks" paraphernalia I've been searching for.

I'm speaking of t-shirts, essentially. I've combed the usual locations
in Toronto, Ontario, where I am, with no luck. Hell, all I'm looking
for is a basic t-shirt (or any kind of shirt, for that matter) with a
"Twin Peaks" decal of some kind on the front and/or back! That's not
much to ask for, is it? :)

Anyway, if anyone out there in the great beyond can help me, I'd truly,
truly, truly appreciate it. I can't wait for the film!

Have you tried an It Store? (You're in Toronto -- they've GOT to have one
there somewhere! :-) They had a decent variety of TP t-shirts; some with
Laura's face, some with a bunch of icons, some with the deer head, some with
just the title. I don't know if they still have them; it's been a while since
I've seen them in the one in St. John's. Then again, I haven't looked.

I got a neat t-shirt from a place downtown, around the height of the "Who
killed..." frenzy. It says, in big red letters, "I KILLED LAURA PALMER".
Haven't seen those anywhere else though, and since the show's been over for a
while, they'll probably be hard to find now.

Below is the "final" cast list (not including the forthcoming movie)
posted after the final episode aired. It's not complete down to every
last bit player, but everyone you asked about is in it, except

} the R.E. agent that shows Coop Dead Dog Farm

Don't know the actress' name off-hand, but it should be simple to find out.

Some of them might not be obvious from the name alone, so here are some
more detailed descriptions:

} [Ian] Abercrombie

Listed below as "Leo's insurance agent". He appeared in one scene, writing
out the insurance check to Shelly for Leo's care.

} Tony Burton

Listed below as "Colonel Riley". He's Major Briggs' superior officer who
shows up in one episode to talk with Harry and Cooper about the Major's
disappearance.

} Also, please tell me who played the following:

} Mr. Lee (Josie's assistant/cousin/abductor/victim)

Listed below as "Jonathan Kumagai".

Due to some complaints I had about the credits I posted for episode
2021/22, I have reformatted those credits, and the new version
is in the ftp site at audrey.sait.edu.au in pub/twin-peaks/credits.
I won't bother to repost, since the file is in essence identical.

Below is a corrected, FINAL version of the cast list. I'm leaving
my account on Sunday, June 16, so DON'T send me mail expecting
to get a reply.

This is a cast list for the show current up to the final episode. It is
based on one posted earlier by Jerry Boyajian, which is in turn based on
one posted by Jon Conrad. It includes all of the regulars, and a few of
the important/interesting minor characters.

This list is updated periodically.

When two different people played the same character, the first one
listed appeared in the pilot, and the second in later episodes.

If you note any misspellings or actors matched to the wrong role,
please mail me at "coufal@owl.caltech.edu".

Yes. Or at least, it should be (since I don't actually have a copy of the
soundtrack yet, I'm only 99-44/100% sure :-)).

Notes:

(1) The first actor listed played the character in the pilot episode
(1000), but was replaced by the second actor in all remaining episodes.

(2) The first actor listed played the character in the TV series, but was
replaced by the second actor in the film "Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me."

(3) Piper Laurie played Tojamura in all scenes, but was credited as
'Fumio Yamaguchi' to hide this fact from viewers. This deception
by the producers extended to a fake biography released by Lynch/
Frost Productions to the newspaper USA TODAY. This biography stated,
among other things, that Yamaguchi had been in several of Akira
    Kurasawa's films.

FWWM trailer and soundtrack ww10aac@sdcc3.ucsd.edu (Eddie the 'ead) 1992-08-12 13:54
E!'s Coming Attractions has finally began airing the FWWM trailer
and it looks damn good IMHO! The first third is backed by the Twin Peaks
Theme (the first note strikes as soon as we see the New Line logo), the
second third by The Pink Room and the last third by Questions in a World
of Blue. Lots of scenes: Laura with Donna, Laura kissing James, Bobby
angry and yanking at Laura's arm, Laura discovering pages missing in her
secret diary, Partyland, Laura stoned, Leland with Teresa in bed and covering
her eyes and asking "who am I?", Rodd kicking open his trailer door to
Desmond and Stanley, Leland coming up on Ronette and Laura in bed,
the OAM yelling "it's your father!" at Laura while Leland yells and honks
the horn and races the engine, a painting where an angel disappears (where
is this from?), an ax smashing into a tv (also where is this from?), a very
quick shot of Bob while Leland cries "don't make me do this!", and at the end
a shot of Cooper in the red room.
There are lots more quick cuts, too numerous to mention. E! is not listed
in my TV Guide (I know it is listed the Valley edition of the Los Angeles Times
- I know CA will air today sometime) so maybe someone could post the times
for everyone else. The trailer runs 1 min and 45 sec.

Picked up the soundtrack yesterday and it is great! There's only one
Julee Cruise song on there (see her on Leno Monday with the B-52's?)
but it is a damn good one. The rest of the album is pretty damn good
except for the two Thought Gang tracks with Angelo Badalamenti talking
I thought I could do without. The FWWM theme is quite moody.

TP: Film Threat articles jgp@zodmate.Rational.COM (Jim Pellmann) 1992-08-12 15:05
As has been reported here, the October issue of Film Threat magazine has a
series of cover stories on "Fire Walk With Me". Although there is really
nothing new in these articles, it still represents the most thorough coverage
of both the series and movie yet seen in print. A must for all Peaks Freaks.

Here are the articles that appear in the issue, along with a few tidbits I
thought interesting or amusing.

* Main article: The Lynch Mob Strikes Again

A long (9-page) description of the series and movie, including the genesis of
the movie right after the cancellation of the series, discussion about the
different directors used in the series, summary of the shooting script for
the movie, the effect TP has had on Sheryl Lee, and the effect TP has had on
  TV.

Has about half a dozen pictures of scenes from the movie.

  Points of interest:

  - "Many familiar faces are NOT returning [to the film], although they
were in the original script. [Co-screenwriter Robert] Engels acknowledges
that several scenes were trimmed to get the film down to a still-overlong
135 minutes. 'We had to shape the story towards Laura Palmer,' he
explains. 'Obviously, a number of the actors [who were cut] are
disappointed.' Adds Catherine Coulson, who's reprising her role as
the Log Lady: 'It must be really devastating for some of them. But
the spirit of ALL of the characters is in the film.'

"A few who had the opportunity to renew their 'Peaks' citizenship simply
did not or could not. Lara Flynn Boyle, whose Donna Hayward became a
major part in the movie, flat-out refused to re-up (her replacement is
Moira Kelly, last seen in the ice-skating drama 'The Cutting Edge').
'I could say something catty and self-serving,' says Engels. 'But I
don't know why Lara didn't want to do it. If anything, she should have
taken it out of gratefulness for what the series did for her.' And sadly,
due to Sherilyn Fenn's prior acting commitments ('Diary of a Hitman',
'Ruby'), the saddle-shoed seductress Audrey Horne sashays no more."

  - "The $9.5 million budget for "Fire Walk With Me" was anteed [sic] up by
CIBY Pictures, a French film company where Lynch has a four-flick/five-year
deal. 'With this picture's money-making potential, we could have gone
anywhere,' says Engels. 'Even though our last show was ranked 72nd,
it was still seen by 10 million people. And if those 10 million people
go to the movie, it's a hit.'"

  - "Some viewers resented the series myriad plot tangents. 'A lot of times
we got creamed because people thought, "Those assholes! What's THAT now?"'
Engels says. 'But we were never trying to goof anybody up. I mean,
every time we showed the wind blowing through the trees, then cut to a
shot of the stoplight, somebody would start another doctrine.'"

  - On ABC's treatment of the show: "Engels says, 'We got shoved around a
little. But we didn't listen to the network as much as we should have,
either. We got off-track in the storytelling, and by the time we put
in Windom Earle and got going again, it was too late.'"

  - "[Director Tina] Rathborne, according to a production assistant, had a
zest for multiple takes--which, for the outrageous funeral scene in the
fourth episode, reportedly numbered close to a dozen: 'Ray [Wise] had
to ride Laura's casket up and down and up and down repeatedly as Grace
Zabriskie [playing Sarah Palmer] wailed, "Leland, don't ruin this too!"'
Wise himself says the experience was 'not something I'd want to do again.
It was like a mechanical bull going insane. I had to surpress the urge
    to giggle.'"

  - On Lynch's behavior on the set: "Not so amusing to some is Lynch's
penchant for using a megaphone on the set--regardless of his distance
from the person he's addressing. Recalls the anonymous production
assistant: 'One time he used it while I was standing right next to
    him. I jumped three feet.'"

(I can't help but think that this was the impetus for the megaphone
    gags in "On the Air".)

  - "According to Engels, he and Lynch wasted little time [after the series
was canceled] devising an outline for the movie. 'We liked these people
and liked being in that place,' he says. 'We just sort of got caught up
in it.' Once the series was officially dead at ABC, and potential deals
to revive on a cable channel ('not enough money could be raised to cover
the $1.2 million-per-episode budget') and Fox Television (studio chieftain
Barry Diller 'always felt that "Twin Peaks" was the series THEY should
have done') fell through, the pair quickly tapped out the screenplay.

"Why did they go with a 'prequel' instead of a sequel? 'This may sound
like bullshit, but there really wasn't a conscious decision about which
was the coolest story,' says Engels. 'It was just kind of what we
arrived at. The challenge was that everyone already knows how it ends.
We had to turn that into a STRENGTH--as opposed to people sitting there
thinking, "This is kind of dumb." It gave us more freedom to create
    suspense than you'd initially think."

  - "Engels says moviegoers 'should be able to enjoy the film without having
seen the series.' To ensure that the screenplay stood firmly on its own
while remaining true to 'Twin Peaks,' the script was flagged by several
nonviewers as well as die-hard fans. In addition, a researcher was hired
to check the storyline's consistency with "The Secret Diary of Laura
Palmer," "Diane ... The Twin Peaks Tapes of Agent Cooper," and other
    literary spinoffs.

"Luckily for the writers, there were few logistical problems. 'The pilot
was so loaded with stuff, so marvelously ambiguous, that we could always
find a place to get around things,' says Engels. 'We were helped by the
fact that Cooper wasn't on the Teresa Banks case [referenced several times
in the series], and that he said he wanted Albert [Rosenfeld, played by
Miguel Ferrer]--not Sam Stanley--when he drove toward Twin Peaks in the
pilot. That allowed us to open up the Banks story."

  - "'Twin Peaks' fashionably rustic lodge, the Great Northern, was barely
shuttered when CBS' 'Northern Exposure'--another hour-long drama peopled
with offbeat characters and filmed in the wilds of Washington State--became
the new darling of media critics. Although the two series are quite
different--'Exposure' favors frothy, message-filled storylines, whereas
'Peaks' preferred a murkier, more cynical tone--some have pointed out their
surface similarities. Bob Engels, for one, finds 'Exposure's' claims to
originality offensive. 'I like [the people behind the show], and I don't
mean to say they're copycats. But to think that 'Northern Exposure' would
exist at all without us is preposterous. I mean, they have a waitress

out of line, that they shouldn't have done. But the real tragedy is that
there aren't more shows like these on TV.'"

A half-page article on the things fans did when TP was canceled. Covers
the creation of COOP and the Twin Peaks Gazette.

* Side article: The Smokin' "Twin Peaks" TV Episode Log

A two-page listing of all TV episodes, giving titles, airdates, writer and
director credits, short plot summaries, new characters, and other trivia.

Although it has more than a few errors, and the writer clearly dislikes
most of the post-Leland episodes, the titles he has thought up are clever,
and it could be handy in looking up scenes on tape.

  Points of interest:

Madchen Amick--not Fenn--actually performed the amazing cherry stem trick."

* Side article: Lynch's Hall of Freaks

A one-page chart showing the "cinematic anomalies" from Lynch's works,
listing their "traits, talents, and fate". Includes:

  - Henry's Baby from "Eraserhead"
  - Radiator Lady from "Eraserhead"
  - John Merrick from "The Elephan Man"
  - Sandworms from "Dune"
  - Baron Harkonnen from "Dune"
  - Ben, the Suave One from "Blue Velvet"
  - Nadine Hurley from "Twin Peaks"
  - Dr. Jacoby from "Twin Peaks"
  - Bobby Peru from "Wild At Heart"

* Side article: Into the Wood

A one-page article about Catherine Coulson, who plays the Log Lady.

  Points of interest:

  - The Log Lady was a former ballroom dance instructor.

  - "'The first log brought to David [Lynch] was hollowed out, and he didn't
like it at all.' says Coulson. Lynch wanted Ponderosa Pine--a type of
wood on which his father, a former research scientist for the U.S. Forest
Service, did his Ph.D. thesis. He settled on a solid, sap-oozing
50-pounder from the Northwest; the log had to last, as Lynch decided there
would be no stump doubles. ('One time, on "Donahue," they used another
log--but it was very offensive,' Coulson says.)"

* Side article: Id's Showtime!

A one-page interview with Frank Silva, who plays Killer Bob.

  Points of interest:

  - "Silva believes the name 'Bob' is Lynch's nod to his own well-documented
weakness for Bob's Big Boy restaurants. It's hard to fathom how a
freckle-faced fast-food icon with a fat ass could inspire such a sinister
character. But then, Lynch finds evil in the unlikeliest of places."

  - "Q: Have you received other acting offers?

A: Not really. But I did a stag party for a guy in Santa Monica. His
friends thought it would be great if Bob could be there, because this
guy was so terrified of him. I agreed to do it for SAG minimum. So
I went over to the house just as the stripper was finishing her
striptease, and before I went in they had the guy blindfolded and
handcuffed to a chair. I hid behind the sofa and they took the
blindfold off. They played a tape of 'Twin Peaks' clips that were
all horrific scenes with Bob; the guy was freaking out. When the tape
ended, I sprang out from the sofa. I crawled up to him and started
speaking backwards. His wife-to-be was named Sheryl, so I screamed in
his face, 'Beware! Sheryl is my SISTER!' He just totally flipped
        out."

* Side article: Little Fop of Horrors

Two-page article on Michael Anderson, the little person who plays the
  Man From Another Place.

  Points of interest:

  - Has a picture of Cooper and Man From Another Place in the Red Room.
MFAP is examining a ring. (Presumably a scene from the movie?)

  - Picture has caption written backwards. You must hold it up to a mirror
    to read it.

* Side article: Ire Walk With Me

Half-page article on the real-life town of Snoqualmie Falls, and the crass
commercialism there the series has inspired.

As I said, it is quite a comprehensive look at TP, well worth hunting down:

TP: GQ profile of Kyle LacLachlan jgp@zodmate.Rational.COM (Jim Pellmann) 1992-08-12 15:10
As has been mentioned here several times, the August issue of GQ has a cover
story about Kyle MacLachlan. I won't repeat the entire article here, as there
is discussion of his three other upcoming movies, but here are a few TP-related
tidbits that were of interest:

- "MacLachlan is a star because he can do one thing better than anybody else:
play decent guys with time-shares in the netherworld. ... 'Kyle plays
innocents who are interested in the mysteries of life', says David Lynch.
'He's the person you trust enough to go into a strange world with.'"

- "MacLachlan has a knack for for twisting the 'normal' knob up to 11, for
pumping the most banal acts (drinking a cup of damn fine coffee) full of
nitrous oxide. [ed. note: like Frank Booth?] It's his ability to undermine
the obvious meanings of the world that makes him perfect for an age in which
  you can't believe in anything."

- "MacLachlan had to be talked into this one ["Fire Walk With Me"]: He felt
the series 'ended badly' because Lynch and company had compromised their
vision. 'David intended to keep the investigation of Laura's murder going
            ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
for the length of the series,' he says. 'There was such an outcry to resolve
  ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
it, we got ourselves caught in the squeeze.' The show also veered from
a story that was grounded in reality--the sordid double life of a prom
queen--to a ridiculous tale of alien possession. By the last episode, even
'Peaks' freaks had canceled their viewing parties and switched off their
sets. MacLachlan and Lynch promise that the spooky, sexy zing of the early
episodes will be back in the film."

- "'What do we like to do together?' David Lynch sings out nasally. 'I have
a pretty good cappuccino machine, and anytime he gets the urge, he comes
on over. We talk about the problems associated with getting a good cup
  of coffee.'"

- On being cornered by a group of Spanish school girls seeking autographs:
"'Apparently when 'Twin Peaks' was on the air in Spain, something like
50 percent of televisions were tuned to it,' he says."

That's about all the TP-related info. Recommend the article to those who
want to learn more about Kyle in general, though.

TP: On the set of FWWM jgp@zodmate.Rational.COM (Jim Pellmann) 1992-08-12 15:11
From the November/December '91 issue of Film Comment:

See You in the Trees

by Greg Olson

A September evening in Western Washington; a dilapidated trailer park, its
raggedly parallel, pale rows set off against the sunset-stained upthrust of
blackish-purple mountains. In a window at the near end of one trailer a little
girl is doing dishes. Some motion outside catches her eye and she calls,
"Daddy, are they out there again?" Sandwiched between her trailer's row and
the next are microphones, movie cameras, and thirty people.

Chris Isaak and Harry Dean Stanton, talking softly, start to walk slowly toward
the camera. Suddenly, a familiar all-American twang cuts the dusky air: "I
can see that ninety. We gotta lose that ninety." David Lynch has noticed a
1990 license plate at the edge of his scene. A grip hops over and covers the
date with a postage stamp of tape, and the director is ready to roll. This is
not the early Nineties in the Pacific Northwest--this is dreamtime in Twin
Peaks.

David Lynch has returned to the scene of the crime.

The nation-grabbing pilot episode of "Twin Peaks"--set in motion by the
discovery of the plastic-wrapped corpse of high-school homecoming queen Laura
Palmer on a chill lakeshore--featured the series' most extensive filming in the
rural environs of Seattle. It was a dreamlike, floating entrance into a
strange world so nearly like our own. Uncharacteristically of television, the
two-hour show gave us stretches of time to get lost in the fear, grief, desire
of the human face, and the contemplation of secrets behind it. Manmade objects
seemed animated by infernal forces--an ever-turning stairwell fan in the
murdered girl's house, fluorescent morgue lights zapping on and off like a neon
sign, a nighttime traffic light burning redder than blood. "Twin Peaks"
assured us that, even on cozy domestic evenings, a wind whispered in the firs.

The various writers and directors who worked on "Twin Peaks" the series (Lynch
himself directed six of 30 episodes) did a creditable job of sustaining the
master's tone and style, his sense of generic dreamworld intermixing clothing,
cars, hairstyles, interiors, value systems, and ways of speaking from the last
four American decades. However, after we learned that Laura's demon-possessed
father Leland was the one who killed her, new characters started popping up
like mushrooms, and storylines bent time and space like a cherry stem at the
mercy of Audrey Horne's tongue. With the obtuseness that is the stock-in-trade
of overpaid network programmers, ABC schedulers disrupted the show's subtle
rhythmic cycle a number of times, and many impatient viewers stopped watching.
Loyal fans prepared to start pining: cancellation couldn't be long in coming.

Three months after the final episode (in which FBI stalwart Agent Dale Cooper
was last seen playing host to the spirit of ultimate Evil, the demon Bob), the
September 4th news-at-11 tells me that not only will there be a "Twin Peaks"
feature movie, "Fire Walk With Me"--it started shooting today in a funky
Snoqualmie trailer court. The plot will cover the seven days of the town's,
and Agent Cooper's, life before the two meet up. Laura Palmer's still alive.

I'm on the case at 1:30 the next afternoon. September 5 is one of those rare
85-degree Indian summer Seattle days. As I whiz through the evergreens toward
the Cascade mountains, passing the salmon-hatchery town where I graduated from
high school, and the whistle stop where my Swedish-immigrant father was a
pre-chainsaw lumberjack, I mull over the TV news report of a closed set; the
video man had to catch a glimpse of the production through a knothole in the
fence. But the sign for the Snoqualmie turnoff has a red-letter FIRE WALK
paper banner taped to it. This is going to be easy.

Well, maybe not. The Snoqualmie Police Station yields no receptionist Lucy, no
Sheriff Truman, no one at all. Finally a young officer leans into the waiting
room and casually points me toward Park and Meadowbrook. I head over, skirting
a ROAD CLOSED sign and coming up against parked squad cars and numerous boys in
blue, who have cordoned off a block of old brick buildings and rundown
storefronts: Snoqualmie's economic hard times are a production designer's good
fortune. Beyond the officers, I can see the production vans and
walkie-talkie-bearing crew-members and a couple of people not technologically
engaged.

I can pass for one of those, I tell myself. I stride past the nearest cop,
breathe a sigh of relief, increase my pace, round a corner, and almost smack
right into Dale Cooper--an arresting sensation, suddenly sharing three feet of
pavement with a fictional character, his double-breasted overcoat, monumental
ivory chin, and gleaming black slicked-back hair as perfect as they are on my
Mitsubishi. In a second, the illusion passes and he's looser-than-Cooper Kyle
MacLachlan, leaning to confer with the transportation van driver.

I find the fence the news crew peeked through--and an unexpected gap. I slip
into the film's Fat Trout Trailer Park. So, right behind me, does David Lynch.
He wears baggy khakis, a white shirt with its collar button closed, a black
suit jacket with small holes at the elbows, and a charcoal-billed cap. A
toothpick, like a little splinter of divining rod, juts from his lips. The
furrow between his eyebrows gives him an earnest, concerned look that opens
easily into amusement and amazement--not unlike Agent Cooper's when confronted
with a slice of cherry pie. For eight years (in "Dune" and "Blue Velvet"
before "Twin Peaks") Kyle MacLachlan has tracked clues and read dreams as
Lynch's truth-questing alter ego, and the two--who both spent their early years
in Washington state--begin the afternoon with a firm handshake.

Lynch and cinematographer Ron Garcia (who shot the TP pilot) set up a scene
involving that national treasure Harry Dean Stanton, who plays the Fat Trout's
scruffy, plaid-shirted manager. Stanton points MacLachlan toward a certain
trailer and then sees him, almost in a trace, going off in another direction.
For a number of rehearsals and takes we get to savor Stanton bellowing, "Why
the HELL are you going up that way?" Lynch speaks quiet words of direction and,
on one take, says, "Okay, Harry Dean, let's get that anger up there" before
calling "Action!" through his megaphone. He calls Stanton "Harry Dean" and
MacLachlan "Cooper."

The scene in the can, Lynch thanks his actors for their "doggone good job." A
teenage girl crosses the shooting area and joins two friends near me. One asks
her, "Could you see a lot from over there?" The girl looks wistfully at
MacLachlan and sighs, "All I know is, there HE is." But in a blink, he isn't
there anymore. Nor are Lynch and Stanton.

I follow a dirt road that circles left to the far side of the park, which
borders on the lazy Snoqualmie River. From here the green waters flow past the
double smokestacks of the Weyerhauser sawmill (the Packard Mill in the series'
opening credits), on to the Salish Lodge (the Great Northern Hotel), and over
the Snoqualmie Falls (Whitetail Falls) that local Native Americans still
worship. As I watch kids skip stones, I remember how these grassy banks became
Mark Twain and Washington Irving country in my childhood imagination. Hearing
a murmur of voices, I look over my shoulder and see the director having a
little powwow with his two actors and gazing at the river. They're perched on
the set-dressed trailer porch of the film's park manager. Message-bearing
scraps stuck to the door, a weathered strip of outdoor carpeting, and two
scraggly potted pines--one decorated with a neon-red fishing lure--complete a
true low-tech David Lynch tableau.

Lynch's fascination with the interface between industrial and organic textures
surfaces as he has a technician apply a layer of dust to an old car's hood.
Then he grabs a hose and carefully mists and spatters droplets over it,
perfecting the look even though the eventual shot won't focus on the car.

Lynch has spoken of the kinship he feels with those who are physically and
socially outside the consumer-culture-imaged mainstream. That evening, after
his crew "loses the ninety," Chris Isaak and Harry Dean walk and talk, and are
interrupted by an old woman with a sunken chin, her hands permanently curled at
the end of stiff arms. "Where's my goddam hot water? Where's my goddam hot
water? Where IS my goddam hot water?" she importunes Stanton. The woman, a
local, speaks on the wrong cue. This is the last natural-light shot of the day
and there are precious few minutes left to get it. Lynch stops the take and
patiently tells her how he wants her to enter the action. They take the shot
three times, and she demands a lot of hot water in perfect form. When the
camera stops after the last take, Lynch goes straight to the woman and puts his
arm around her: "That was very, very good, Margaret."

As Pat from North Bend's Mar T Cafe (the Double R Diner) arrives with Harry
Dean's favorite chili and the crew prepares for hours of night shooting, Lynch
calls this "a beautiful day." He's been getting the best from cast and crew,
and the filmmakers and townsfolk have interacted as felicitously as flapjacks
and syrup. Babies and dogs have been quiet during takes, movie stars with
relaxed faces have signed autographs, dreamed-up movie life has melded with the
everyday doings of the trailer-court residents, and the whole thing's been
witnessed by smalltown-dwellers-in-spirit variously from New York, England, and
Sugarland, Texas. Around 4:30 PM Lynch says, "We've got a bad siren," and
stops a take; when the noise ends, a Snoqualmie man grins and says, "That's the
Packard Mill changing shifts." Just another moment in "Twin Peaks," as
rendered by Norman Rockwell. We'll have to wait for the movie to hear the
woods breathe and feel the night come creeping into bodies and souls.

In my newspaper the next morning I see that, in the middle of yesterday's
late-summer picnic of an afternoon, a couple reaching for a piece of dirftwood
downriver from the falls spotted something oddly spherical--a human skull.

TP: 2 more films possible! 2nd season video? jgp@zodmate.Rational.COM (Jim Pellmann) 1992-08-12 15:13
From the August Pulse! magazine (Tower Records/Video freebie):

Nothing too new in most of the article, but see ^^^^^ markings below for three
newsworthy items.

PIE AND COFFEE

Chris Isaak on "Twin Peaks"

by Anthony C. Ferrante

In 1986 David Lynch was searching for moody, atmospheric music to pepper "Blue
Velvet," his surreal ode to middle-America. He decided Bay Area-based ethereal
rocker Chris Isaak could provide the goods.

"At first I didn't know anything about him," recalls Isaak. "They just said
David Lynch wants to use some of your music in his movie. When he came by, we
were all pretty scared. Here's a Hollywood filmmaker who probably was going to
come by with four pages of music and say, 'This is what I want you to play,'
and none of us can read music. But he just walked in and started to make all
these noises of what he wanted. I looked at the guys and everybody just
smiled, because that's exactly the way we work anyway."

This similar working thread eventually paid off for Isaak, but "Blue Velvet"
didn't put him on the map. "It didn't give me much exposure, but it gave me
something to talk about with girls," he says. Instead, Lynch's 1990 "Wild at
Heart" sent Isaak's musical career spiraling sky-high with its use of "Wicked
Game" off his "Heart Shaped World" album. And with a little help from a
Lynch-directed video in heavy rotation on MTV, Isaak went from modest club
pauper to top 10 prince virtually overnight.

So now that the ever-growing enigma called David Lynch has made Isaak a
household singing sensation, what could he possibly have in store next for his
favorite song contributor?

How about casting Isaak in a major role in his new film "Twin Peaks: Fire Walk
With Me," a theatrical prequel to the short-lived cult TV series that follows
the last seven days of Laura Palmer? Isaak plays FBI agent Chet Desmond, who
investigates one of the first murders linked to the same killer later
responsible for Palmer's death.

"Imagine if Twin Peaks were Mayberry," says Isaak. "I'm the straight guy. I'm
Andy Griffith and everybody around me is Floyd or Barney Fife. I'm the FBI and
I do what you expect an FBI guy to do. I carry my badge, flash my badge, ask
questions and get the hell out. As long as I didn't bump into any scenery I
think everything was OK."

Though it may seem like Isaak is stepping on Kyle MacLachlan's big FBI shoes,
die-hard "Peaks" fans shouldn't worry. MacLachlan returns as the forever-wise
Agent Cooper, and in addition to Isaak's Agent Desmond, two other secret agent
men join the fray as well--Kiefer Sutherland as Agent Stanley and former glam
rocker David Bowie as metaphysically screwed-up agent Jeffries.

With so many newcomers, one would think that "Fire Walk With Me" would not have
much room for any of the series regulars, and that's partially true. Since the
movie follows the events leading up to Laura Palmer's untimely death, only key
series regulars play an integral part this time out.

Thus Sheryl Lee returns as Laura Palmer, and Grace Zabriskie and Ray Wise are
back as her parents. However, the entire Horne family, including Sherilyn
Fenn as the prankish Audrey and Richard Beymer as patriarch Benjamin are
absent, though they were key ingredients to the series. Additionally, Lara
Flynn Boyle, who played Laura's best friend Donna, has been replaced by Moira
Kelly (who appeared early this year in the ice-skating romance "The Cutting
Edge").

Even though "Fire Walk With Me" is picking up the Peaks puzzle pieces before
the series events, co-screenwriter Bob Engels promises that the movie should
fit perfectly alongside the show. As for story details, this $10 million
production is a closely guarded secret (cast, crew and press releases have been
about as cryptic as later Peaks episodes). A few things are definite though:
Laura Palmer will die; there's an evil in the woods responsible for her death
(conveniently named Bob); and the quiet little lumbertown of Twin Peaks will
never be the same.

Despite the television series failing in America, "Twin Peaks" has become an
overwhelming phenomenon in the European market. In Japan, the new film has
already opened to record-breaking box office numbers. This type of foreign
fan-base was an important factor behind continuing the show in a theatrical
incarnation (if "Fire Walk With Me" hits abroad, two other big-screen
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
follow-ups are tentatively in the works).
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

"We came very close to continuing the series for Europe, but we just couldn't
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
put that kind of deal together," reveals Engels. "We needed a million or so to
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
do it and they couldn't come up with that money to do it week to week."
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

As for being a Peaks-newcomer, Isaak--who also is coming soon to a record store
near you with his follow-up to "Heart Shaped World"--admits that even though he
took this particular walk on the acting side, he's far more at home with his
music than movies.

"I read the script and didn't really get a lot of the stuff," he admits. "I
thought I only have to really understand what my character does. I was also
nervous, thinking I'm going in there being this singer and they're going to go,
'Oh no, the singer doesn't know his lines.' So I rehearsed them over and over
with my sax player Johnny Reno, and once we were shooting, everybody else was
like, 'Give me the script, where are you?' 'Page 7, third line.' I knew it by
heart when I got there."

SIDEBAR

Watch Video With Me

If "Fire Walk With Me" fans the Twin Peaks flames, brew some coffee and burn
through a stack of TV episodes on video. Warner Home Video offers the European
theatrical version of the Season Premiere (****), a two-hour pilot that pushed
the boundaries of television, took well-worn cliches, wrapped them in plastic
and turned out innovation at its finest.

The remaining first season episodes (#2-7 [sic]) are available from Worldvision
($14.95 each); the second season may be on the way soon. The two best episodes
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
of season one are Episode #2 (***), which finds Agent Cooper sitting in a
red-draped room talking with an odd-sounding dwarf (Michael Anderson), who rubs
his hands togehter and dances backwards; and Episode #7 (****), the season's
cliffhanger, complete with burning building, the gunshot to the chest, and the
suicide.

They REALLY Care Who Killed Laura Palmer

The 'Twin Peaks' series is a national obsession in Japan with thousands of
videos in circulation; now 'Fire Walk With Me' is the country's hottest movie

By Dana Lewis

Tokyo--It was spitting rain, but the lines formed early at the Shochiku Central
Theater near the Ginza. By 11 a.m., it was standing room only for the opening
of the hottest film property in the country, "Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me."

This David Lynch film, a prequel to his defunct television series detailing the
last days of Laura Palmer, has found a far kinder audience than it did in
Cannes, where reviews were decidedly mixed. Rather than screening to boos, the
movie is a phenomenon in Japan.

Whether sniggering at the quirks of Special Agent Dale Cooper or desperately
trying to follow the jerky tale of Laura Palmer's dissolution and gory death,
Japanese audiences are packing theaters. They are doing it despite lukewarm
reviews, a cast that leaves out many of the favorite characters from the TV
series--and the not always favorable word-of-mouth.

"My friends told me not to waste my money," says Tomoko Saito, who started
watching "Twin Peaks" while living in the United States. But she may be in the
minority. Since its premiere on May 16, ticket sales for the movie have
reached 450,000; it is expected to run through the summer.

"We're booked into more than 100 theaters around Japan," says Taka Ushiyama of
Nippon Herald Films Inc., the movie's Japanese distributor. "That's the
equivalent of a 2,000-theater release in the U.S. This is going to be one of
the top 10 films of the year."

The popularity of this cult movie, marketed in Japan as "The Last Seven Days of
Laura Palmer," is less attributable to the name value of its creator--it's hard
to find Lynch's name at the bottom of the promotional flyers--than to that of
his creation: "Twin Peaks," the TV series that would not die.

Lynch's first television foray may be fodder for trivia tests back in the
United States, but in Japan, the series, which began airing on pay TV a little
more than a year ago, has become a national obsession. While some industry
observers suggest that the release of "Fire Walk" may well be the end of the
"Twin Peaks" frenzy, others point to the demand for Episode One of the series,
which is back near the top of the rental video charts.

According to Shusei Tsujihata of Pioneer, which originally bought the rights in
a joint deal with software distributor Amuse Video in anticipation of selling
about 3,000 of the 14-tape sets, there are about 30,000 sets, or 420,000 tapes,
in circulation either at rental video stores or through direct sales.

"That's unheard of for a television series," says Tsujihata. "It's just
impossible. And it's also made us a nice bit of money."

"Twin Peaks" also has single-handedly boosted the fortunes of Wowow, Japan's
first satellite pay-TV service. It has spawned a cottage industry of writers
and analysts, constantly regurgitatiing summaries of the complex story line in
a raft of magazine special issues and knock-off books ranging from "Be a
Peaker!" to the "White Paper on Twin Peaks Psychoanalysis." Japanese TV
directors have parodied the show on their comedy programs, while ripping off
its lighting and camera angles for their own offbeat dramas.

The feeding frenzy reached bizarre proportions in February when promoters threw
gaudy public wakes for Laura Palmer in front of five of the busiest train
terminals in the nation. Thousands of fans filed by to pay their last respects
to identical wax effigies of Laura Palmer, reported to have cost 1 million yen,
about $8,000, apiece to make. Pop stars and actors sent flowers, and roving
news camera crews mobbed any entriprising mourner who arrived sporting a Nadine
eye patch or toting Log Lady logs.

Amazingly, until the movie's release, "Twin Peaks" has only been available on
video, laserdisc and limited circulation pay TV. It has never been aired by
one of the national networks. In fact, when it was first shown in Japan, only
a few hundred thousand viewers were able to see it.

That was May 31, 1991. Wowow, operated by Japan Satellite Broadcasting, was
winding up a special promotion to mark the start of its service. Until that
date, anyone with a small parabola antenna on his or her house or apartment
balcony could tune into JSB's satellite, and the showpiece program was Episode
One of "Twin Peaks." The next day, Wowow scramblers kicked in, and in order to
see Episode Two, viewers has to pay 27,000 yen (about $200).

The strategy worked. Today the pay-TV channel has nearly 870,000 subscribers.
"Wowow," says spokesman Masamoto Oda, "has become synonymous with 'Twin Peaks.'
It's both raised our profile and established our image."

Viewer Hitomi Tsutamoto of the port city of Koba agrees. She shelled out for
the Wowow service, and even bought a satellite dish, when she heard they'd be
showing the series.

"I'd been thinking of signing up even before that," says the 32-year-old word
processor operator, "but 'Twin Peaks' decided it for me. It starred Kyle
MacLachlan, and I wanted to see it before anyone else did."

Tsutamoto is more than the average fan. She's the founder of the Kyle
MacLachlan Fan Club and Twin Peaks Report, a "Twin Peaks" fanzine. At home
there are "Twin Peaks" posters on the wall and a pair of videos for watching
and re-watching her favorite show. "My husband is getting a little fed up with
it all," she admits. "Of course, he watched 'Twin Peaks' too. But it didn't
seem to grab him."

What is it that has grabbed so many Japanese and turned them into "Peakers," as
the faithful are called?

"The story is so complicated and hard to understand," Tsutamoto says, "and the
characters are so eccentric. You keep wondering, what's going to happen next?"

In the view of Nobuo Kaneko, a senior editor at Fuso Publishing Co. in Tokyo,
"Japanese like following these complex story lines. Especially younger people
get off on knowing details that no one else knows."

To feed that hunger, Fuso published translations of "The Diary of Laura Palmer"
[sic] and other "Twin Peaks" books. "Diary" has sold 250,000 copies, compared
to about 350,000 copies, published by Penguin, in the United States, where
there was a network TV audience. Of course, Lynch's own peculiar vision
helped, says Kaneko, but he doesn't think it played such an important part.
"We have plenty of weird dramas in Japan," he says.

For a country that also took to Rubik's cube, "Twin Peaks" represents the
ultimate game. Add a dose of the supernatural, a handsome lead actor and a bit
of audience one-upmanship, and there was a boom just ready to explode.

From the start, "Twin Peaks" has been a model of Japanese niche marketing,
a method whereby companies target narrow segments of the population in an
extremely competitive marketplace.

Musicians and music critics were the first to pick up on "Twin Peaks," most
industry people agree. "They're on top of what's happening in America, and
they began telling us about the show," recalls Pioneer's Tsujihata. But after
that, it was all calculation. "We contacted people we thought would like the
show," he says. "We sent them sets of the video, and asked them to mention it
in their columns or on their programs."

The word-of-mouth strategy worked. Soon, magazines were quoting pop stars and
TV actors about their "Twin Peaks" obsession. It helped that Japanese popular
culture and media critics loved it. Soon teenagers and college students were
hearing the leaders of the Japanese hip rave about the series on late-night
radio and television talk shows.

Long before the mainstream media picked up the story, rental video shops had
waiting lists filled up for weeks in advance. The 60,000 yen (about $460)
laserdisc set sold out overnight.

"High school girls would be gossiping about the characters and who did what to
who," says Wowow's Oda, "and if only a few of their friends knew what they were
talking about, all the better. It let them feel superior."

The series also became fodder for the "otaku" boom. "Otaku," as they are
called, are obsessive fans who pour all their energy into obscure pursuits,
whether collecting Barbie dolls or hacking computer networks.

Long derided as eccentric nerds, otaku have emerged as Wayne's Worldly pop
culture antiheroes among Japanese bored with the old cultural standards. And
"Twin Peaks," says Fuso's Kaneko, "is the definitive otaku show."

Readers of "Twin Peaks" books and magazines are taking personality tests to
find out if they are Agent Cooper material or the stuff of Bob. Complicated
charts in books and magazines trace connections between "Twin Peaks"
characters. T-shirts, coffee mugs, posters, soundtracks, and other "Twin
Peaks" goods are available through catalogues. Even giant Pasco, a major
manufacturer of prepackaged pastries, has started shipping "Twin Peaks" cherry
pies to pastry stores and convenience shops across Japan.

But the top prize must surely go to the Japan Travel Bureau. For a paltry
228,000 yen (about $1,750), JTB promises to whisk travelers to the very site
where Laura Palmer first washed ashore wrapped in plastic. Originally planned
as an on-off event, the "Twin Peaks" tours have taken on a life of their own,
says JTB's Tomoyuki Komagata, himself an avid Peaker. By now, 300 Japanese,
most in their 20s, have trekked to Snoqualmie Falls and North Bend, Wash.,
spending the night at the Great Northern Lodge and having their pie and mocha
at the R.R. Diner. [sic]

"Everyone was very nice," says Komagata of their reception by bemused
Washingtonians. "By the second trip, they had plastic bags ready so our people
could wrap themselves up and pretend to be Laura Palmer."

Not that the fans needed help. Joining the inaugural trip, for instance, was a
15-member contingent from Tsutamoto's fan club, all decked out in matching FBI
jumpers.

"I was really surprised by how cheerful the town was," admits Tsutamoto. "It
wasn't like the dark, treacherous place in the TV show at all." The most
unsettling part, in fact, was all the attention the Japanese tourists got from
Japanese and local media. "There were all these cameramen milling about while
we were trying to eat at the R.R. Diner [sic]," she says ruefully. "It was
really kind of embarrassing."

While the movie is bringing "Twin Peaks" to a wider audience, observes Fuso
Publishing's Kaneko, it is also stripping away "Twin Peaks" elitism. "The
otaku types," he suggests, "are already losing interest."

In fact, many in the entertainment industry are pondering when the boom will go
bust.

"Lynch is not the sort of director than 10 in 10 people are going to like,"
says Pioneer's Tsujihata. "What I'm afraid of is that one day people will just
get fed up with it. They'll says, 'Twin Peaks' again? Enough already!"

Already, "Twin Peaks" posters and pamphlets are retreating to the Back 40 of
public relations departments' bulletin boards. At Nippon Herald, the new news
is "Basic Instinct." "This one will be big," Ushiyama says. "This one's a
hit."

But "Twin Peaks" plods on. Audiences are still growing, if more slowly. Books
are still being published, and Wowow has scheduled a special two-day, 28-hour
marathon broadcast in July.

Looking ahead, superfan Tsutamoto says she hopes the fan club can be kept
going.

"Shows like 'Star Trek' still have their fan clubs, don't they? Even if
they're just a few of us left, we intend to keep on."

(Dana Lewis is a writer based in Tokyo.)

TP: Log Lady speaks jgp@zodmate.Rational.COM (Jim Pellmann) 1992-08-12 15:15
From Aug 8-14 TV Guide's "Grapevine" section:

Blurb titled "Twin Perks", over a nice photo of our favorite Log Lady cradling
our favorite log, captioned "Coulson and friend: branching out"

"There's an advantage to being a cult figure," says Catherine Coulson, who,
having played The Log Lady on _Twin Peaks_, definitely knows whereof she
speaks. "People tend to listen to me. I'm recognized wherever I go. I can
get a nice seat in a restaurant, but, more importantly, I've been able to do
work for AIDS and the environment -- things that matter." Look for Coulson to
reprise her small-screen role in "Fire Walk with Me," the big-screen prequel to
the David Lynch TV series set to open Aug 28. Will the prequel spawn a sequel?
"I don't think we've seen the last of _Twin Peaks_," she says. "But I don't
have the log here, so I wouldn't want to predict."

TP: FWWM review jgp@zodmate.Rational.COM (Jim Pellmann) 1992-08-12 15:16
From: gsf@cray.com (Greg Fischer)
Subject: It's Going to Happen Again!
Date: Tue, 28 Jul 92 10:24:03 CDT

Having found myself in Europe several weeks ago (in Paris, the cultural
navel of the West, to be exact), I realized I had the perfect chance to
circumvent the cinema distribution system of the culturally bereft US
and catch the new Twin Peaks movie a month early. Although my wife's
main motive was to see it in Europe so we didn't have to see it in the
US, where we would have to admit it to our babysitter, my motive was to
share my good fortune with my TP-newsletter compatriots, and give them
the early scoop.

Good news everyone: it will be worth the wait. This movie is dripping
with every element that made the TV show great, and has none of the
self-consciousness that made the second season so annoying. The story
and pacing is taught, with nary a wasted frame. And while we all
already know what's happened, what's happening and what's going to
happen, there is still that wonderful sense of anxiety, dread and untold
secrets.

The remainder of my impressions may constitute **SPOILERS**, although
I'm not quite sure how one spoils a prequel.

As for the direction, from the earliest frames David Lynch grabs you by
the nose and doesn't let go until the final credits roll. There is a
lot of new (and excellent) music by Badalamenti and Lynch, including
what must be Lynch's version of rap. The dialogue is typically great,
except for an amazingly (and perhaps, purposefully) dumb piece between
James and Laura concerning turkeys. The acting is definitely up to par
here. The evil Roger Ebert, in his "official" review, trashed Sheryl
Lee for her acting, but I thought she did a great job with an extremely
difficult part. A little overwrought, maybe, but hey, that's what we're
paying for here.

The plot has been much-discussed in Netland as having three parts: Theresa
Banks' investigation, Laura Palmer's story, and a post-second-season
resolution. Well, this last part is miniscule to non-existent at best, with
just a few brief allusions to the second season during the course of the movie.
All in all, this may be for the best, as the movie is more unified for it. The
initial Theresa Banks investigation sequence, lasting about a half-hour, is
very good. Chris Isaac and Kiefer Sutherland are great fun as the federal
investigators; their characters are new and refreshing, yet fit in well with
the whole.

But I wasn't sure if I really wanted to see the Last Seven Days of Laura
Palmer. It seemed like it would be too painful. Besides, we all know
what happened from the TV series and the diary, and the movie does not
vary much from this framework (although certain plot nit-pickers will
have a hayday). So what's the point? Well, the point is Laura Palmer.
This movie lets you finally know her, her pain, her fears, her courage,
her strengths and weaknesses as she battles against an evil so
insidiously present, yet so frustratingly hidden. You get to see her
interact with the characters we already know from the series (including
Daddy-Leland), and her life and actions of the last few days begin to
make more sense. It ends up complementing the series and the diary, as
opposed to being redundant. The effect is very satisfying.

This movie is NOT for the Twin-Peaks-Uninitiated; while it's somewhat
difficult for me to tell, it seemed that there was quite a bit of
reliance on the TV show for previous plot and character development.
I've compiled a list of bits and characters from the TV show that do or
don't show up in the movie. (This may be the worst bunch of **SPOILERS**;
I won't mention the few neat NEW things that appear.)

Alive and Well: Leland and Sarah, James, Donna (although played by the
little-too-young-and-innocent-seeming Moira Kelly), Bobby and Mike,
Jacques Renault and Leo, the dancing dwarf, red curtains, BOB, Mrs
Tremond and Grandson, creamed corn, Harold Smith, Gordon Cole, Agent
Cooper, Diane, rings, one-armed Mike, convenience store, Annie, One-Eyed
Jack's, Ronette Polaski, fingernails, Shelly and Norma, diaries,
Roadhouse, Julee Cruise, cocaine, dreams, doppelgangers, Philadelphia,
Haywards (Doc and Eileen, I think), Log Lady, motor oil.

Missing in Action: Sheriff Truman, Andy and Lucy, Hornes (Ben, Jerry,
Audrey, Johnny), Packards (Josie and Andrew), Martells (Catherine and
Pete(!)), Hurleys (Big Ed and Nadine), Doc Jacoby(!), Briggs (Major and
Elizabeth), Blackie, Wyndom Earle, Hank Jennings, Damned-good coffee,
donuts and pies, the Giant, the Great Northern.

This movie is also not for the squeamish. Its all here: the sex, the
drugs, the violence, the autopsies. Lynch pulls no punches - literally.

And while I won't say how, Lynch manages to put a happy ending on this
story, if only to keep the viewer from going out after the movie and
jumping in front of a roaring metro engine.

The movie was pretty well-attended in Paris; the theatre room, while
only holding 200 seats, was packed. The show I saw was subtitled in
French, which allowed Mary Beth to pick up on some of the dialogue that
was purposefully partially obscured in the soundtrack. And according to
MB, the translators took out all occurences of the Seven-Words-You-Can't-
Say-On-Hypocritical-American-Network-TV - the only tarnish on the
French's otherwise shining cultural progressivism.

Anyway, once this gem manages to wash up on the shore of this cultural
backwater we call the US of A, I recommend you check it out, post-haste,
before it disappears back into the tide.

Two-Thumbnails-Up-ly yr's,

Greg

For those of you with cable TV, the E! (entertainment) channel is showing the
trailer for "Fire Walk With Me" on its "Coming Attractions" show this week
(August 10-14).

It's about two minutes long, and has lots of scenes and quick cuts. It shows
Laura, Leland, Sarah, Bobby, Donna, James, Cooper, Teresa Banks, Cooper, and
Bob. (I won't describe the scenes shown, but there are a couple of good ones.)
The end caption is the same as the one seen on the posters: "In a town like
Twin Peaks, no one is innocent."

Try and catch it if you get E! on your cable system.

Twin Peaks/Gerald's Game DSF105@psuvm.psu.edu 1992-08-13 09:31
Folks:

If you don't mind a few minute's diversion from talk
of the upcoming movie, conventions, & stuff like that, here's
something that's interesting, if somewhat pointless.

As a Stephen King fan who isn't blindly uncritical of
his stuff, I recently read GERALD'S GAME (King's latest) and
noticed a little "borrowing" from Peaks. At least that's how
I saw it; you might read it and call me crazy. Who cares.

     By the way, spoilers ahead.

I know that when NEEDFUL THINGS came out, there was a
similar discussion in this group about Peaks references. I
agree that NTs owed more to Peaks than did GERALD'S GAME,
but here are some similarities I detected.

     * Jessie, the tortured heroine, comes from a semi-
dysfunctional home, not to mention her sexual abuse
at the hands of her father. (Laura Palmer?)

     * Her sister's name is Maddy. OK, this is a reach,
but it was just something I caught.

     * Finally, the character of the lurking, prowling,
semi-human killer was *way* too close to BOB to
escape my notice. Don't get me wrong. . . King's
treatment of the character is genuinely terrify-
ing. (I haven't been scared by anything he's
       written since IT.)

Don't get me wrong. . . King has produced his own story,
one of his better ones in years. Still, I think Lynch & Frost
deserve a nod.

Check out GERALD'S GAME if you liked the character of BOB
on Peaks. Maybe you'll see a little of what I mean. If not,
I guess I wasted your time. C'est la vie.

In any case, I'm just throwing this stuff out to anyone
who's interested. By the way, if anyone can get their hands
on the recent issue of FILM THREAT magazine, there's a great
12+ page article on Peaks the series, Peaks, the movies, and
all things Lynchian. Check it out if you can find it. Coop's
on the front.

Well, thanks for putting up with meaningless jabber.
'Til next post,

Re: FWWM at the Cannes Film Festival <DSF105@psuvm.psu.edu> 1992-08-13 09:55
My reading of the Cannes situation is that Lynch is not
well liked by the critics there. I'm just going on what I've
read here. . . I don't know anything anyone else doesn't.
It's just that WILD AT HEART was also booed at Cannes.

I should also add that I have no production work to my
name other than a B.A. in communications, but I still think
that the lofty critics at Cannes should at least *acknowledge*
Lynch's vision if not appreciate it.

Granted, WILD AT HEART won the Palme d'Or (a d'Or prize?
. . . sorry), but this still doesn't excuse the booing by
others. No, I think some critics just have a grudge against
Lynch and his works.

But what do I know? I loved DUNE. . .

Feel free to respond, gripe, whatever. Thanks for your
time.

That's odd, considering that Wild at Heart won the Golden
Palm -- the highest award for a picture at Cannes.
Considering that Lynch has never even been considered for
an academy award here in the states, I'd say that the
French have more appreciation for his work than we do.
A lot of the French supposedly love Lynch. But Twin Peaks
Fire Walk With Me was not really to their liking. I don't
think it won any awards.

Wasn't it the French that put up most of the funding for FWWM?
And aren't they the ones paying Lynch to make several more
pictures?

I think the critics in the U.S. hate Lynch much more than any
critic in France. You can always count on Roger Ebert to give
his movies a thumbs down, for instance. (I still remember
him comparing the watching of a David Lynch movie to being
a child presented with a dirty magazine on the playground).

Yup. It's taking place this weekend (Aug 15-16) in North Bend and
Snoqualmie. Advertising has been pretty light, so I'm not sure what
events are supposed to take place. There's a preview showing of Fire
Walk With Me at the North Bend Cinema (across the street from the
Mar-T Cafe/RR Diner - it's a small town). The delightfully scuzzy Mt
Si Motel (not part of the official festivities because it isn't
presentable enough) is offering tours of the motel room used in filming
the movie.

The city official types who Worry About These Things are somewhat
nonplussed by the TP Fest, as no one knows what it's going to do to
traffic and parking in the area. Attendance estimates for this
weekend range from zero to 20-30,000, which is ten times the
population of the town. (This isn't the big city. The stoplight seen
swinging in the wind in the TV show is THE North Bend stoplight, you
have to drive 15 miles toward Seattle before there's another one.)

I live in North Bend, so I'll at least pass through the festival this
weekend, and next week I'll let people know what happened.

A long time ago... Someone asked why Annie quit 'talking' when
she entered the ring of sycamores. Last night I was watching the
episode where W.E. describes the White and Black Lodges to
the pawn-encased teenager. He makes a statement about what exists
in the Black Lodge and adds that prayers cannot enter there.
So had Annie wanted to make other types of statements, she
probably could have. I think she was trying to attempt prayer only.

Just got the Twin Peaks FWWM soundtrack -- first thoughts bskendig@netcom.com (Brian Kendig) 1992-08-16 01:12
Well, I snatched up the soundtrack when I first saw it tonight -- I
hadn't realized it would be out yet! When's the movie coming out, by
the way?

The soundtrack has twelve songs on it. Here are my first impressions
of them; read this is you're considering buying the soundtrack, but
don't read it if you don't want your opinion to be tainted! ;)

"Theme From Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me": Rather nondescript jazz.
Nothing to make it sound Peakish, or to make it sound like any other
Peaks music.

"The Pine Float": More nondescript jazz. This one doesn't sound
particularly Twin Peakish either, unfortunately.

"Sycamore Trees": The song from the very last episode of TP ("and I'll
see you... and you'll see me... under the sycamore trees"). As such,
it's _definitely_ Peakish. :)

"Don't Do Anything (I Wouldn't Do)": More nondescript jazz. This and
the first two songs sound like a quartet on Bourbon Street at two in
the morning -- nice and casual, good jazz, but...

"A Real Indication": Oh, my god... _painful_ to listen to. Angelo
Badalamenti does VOCALS on this one. Definitely David Lynchian, but
it feels more like it belongs in his previous movie (what was the name
of that, again? Geez, I forget...) It even sounds like the vocal
track was specially engineered to sound bad. Triple-ugh.

"Questions In A World Of Blue": This one makes up for "Indication".
It's a new one sung by Julee Cruise, and she does it right; a nice,
gentle melody, with an airy harmony behind it.

"The Pink Room": A heavier beat, and more monotonous, than the others.
It almost sounds like background music; I'm interested to see where
they use it. As a musical piece, though, it doesn't really tickle me,
because it has no melody; it's just a five-note sequence repeated
slowly over and over again.

"The Black Dog Runs At Night": Otherwise known as "Let's Pluck A Bass
Guitar For A Few Minutes". No melody, but there is a voice that says
"Black dog runs at night" every now and then.

"Best Friends": I like this one. A gentle melody, almost sad in a
way. But it's still jazz, and not really Peakish.

"Moving Through Time": Yet more gentle jazz. A little bit repetitive.
... no, make that a LOT repetitive.

"Montage from Twin Peaks": Now _this_ is good stuff. It's a collage
of "Girl Talk", "Birds in Hell", "Laura Palmer's Theme", and "Falling"
(I've never heard of the first two before), and it's definitely got
that Twin Peaks feel to it. Halfway through, though, it turns into
"Falling" (the song that played over the title credits of the TV
show), and it stays with that song throughout the rest of the piece.

"The Voice of Love": A very nice ending, done on two keyboards only.
Nice chords, and it's got that feeling of love/hope to it.

So, with the final tally being five songs I like, six I don't mind
listening to, and only one I DO mind listening to, I think I'd
recommend this soundtrack to a real Peaks diehard, but not to anyone
else -- it doesn't have as much to distinguish it as the original
"Sountrack from Twin Peaks" had.

Remember too that Julee Cruise has one album out: "Floating Into the
Night", which contains songs from Twin Peaks and one song from Blue
Velvet in addition to some other original ones of hers. I'd recommend
that one for the distinctive sound.

Of course, once I see the movie, my whole opinion of this soundtrack
could change... :)

Just a thought re: Brian Kendig's review of "A Real Indication" from the
soundtrack to FWWM.......

It's probably my favorite song on the whole soundtrack, and much more
"Peakish" than any of the others if only because of the agonized vocals
of Badalamenti.

Sounds a lot like MC 900' Jesus.........

Just caught the first FWWM TV ad gandhi3@husc8.harvard.edu (Srinivas Gandhi) 1992-08-16 09:53
I just caught the add for the movie on WWOR-TV. It
looks pretty effective---shots of Laura, Bobby, Dale, the
secret diary and LELAND!
Has anyone else seen it? Are there different ads
out there, or just one?

 Kirsten,

Thanks for the reply. An "It Store"? I've never heard of such a thing
in Toronto, but I'll have to check on "it." Toronto is a world-class
city but so damn slow...I went to buy the movie soundtrack yesterday
(8/16) and they had not yet received it in any of the "big" music
stores. Very sad if it was released Stateside on 8/11.

Yikes, I hope the MOVIE actually makes it here on 8/28!!! Perish the
thought otherwise!

 Thanks again.

Has anyone ever tried writing any cast members for autographs? If so,
what was your success like?

 Thanks!

Series videos and Twin Peaks fan clubs... 9207987h@levels.unisa.edu.au 1992-08-16 17:31
Great to see a bit more traffic on this newsgroup - can't wait for the
movie to come to Australia!

Thanks to all those posting the great articles from the American film
magazines. From what I've gathered, if there is enough support for the
film, we just might be able to visit the town of Twin Peaks once again...

So make sure you go and see the film - even more than once if you want
to! Looks as though the Japanese are really flipping out over the
series! Hopefully some finance can be sought and the series can be
started up again....Who knows?!

Anyway, can anyone help me with a few things Twin Peaks....

1. The series videos - what is the name of the company that has put them
out? What are the "official" names of the videos (eg. Twin Peaks
Episodes 2-5 ??) Does anyone know if they are available in Australia??

2. Are there any "major" fan clubs or fan magazines/newsletters to which
I can subscribe, either here in Australia, or more likely, overseas?

Hope to hear from a few of you soon...

Final Ending? tbuzzeo@ersys.edmonton.ab.ca (Tom Buzzeo) 1992-08-16 18:39
Morgana (sorry I forgot his adreess :p ), and I were disscussing about
the "end" of Twin Peaks... I veiwed the final episode up here in Canada
about a year ago. The version I saw ended with Andy & Truman watching
Cooper bash his head into the bathroom mirror. Morgana's version (living
in Aussie Land) continues past this point. And the bit he described
souded like what Ronette (?) was saying in the hospital from the Draft of
FWWM. This is becoming very confusing.. any help, more confusion, greatly
accepted :)

Does David Bowie and/or Chris Isaccs sing a song on the soundtrack? I thought
Lynch asked Isaccs if he could use the song "Wicked Game" in the movie? If its
in the movie, I would have really liked to see it on the soundtrack!

I LOVE "A REAL INDICATION".

It's one of the great songs off this album. I can hardly wait to
see what's going on-screen when this song happens, but I got a
real indication of a laugh coming on.

Gotta be Bob emerging!

I also like the Pink Room as the second best song on the album.

Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me schultz@unixg.ubc.ca (Stewart Schultz) 1992-08-17 22:27
Saw the movie on Sunday (the 16th) in Snoqualmie -- several
insiders were there mingling with the Peakers: David Lynch, Sheryl
Lee, Ray Wise, Moira Kelly, Catherine Coulson, and others. I asked
Coulson what it was like filming Eraserhead and she said "It was
really weird...we were all very young!" Ray Wise bent over
backwards to please his fans, signing dozens of autographs, even
sang "Mairsy Doats" with some of the crowd.

My impression of the movie: not of much interest to anyone but TP (or
Sheryl Lee) fans, pretty predictable overall, but with some very good
acting by Lee and Wise. Lotsa typical Lynch humor, loaded with TP
references that will be pretty meaningless to outsiders, plenty of sex
& violence, but nowhere near as subliminal and disturbing as Wild at
Heart. It won't make much money (in fact it might bomb), but I know
I'll see it many times.... as will probably most TP fans.

Jimmy Scott (the singer of "Sycamore Trees" in the Red Room) apparently
simgs backup vocals on Lou Reed's new "Magic and Loss"(?) live video.

Re: Series videos and Twin Peaks fan clubs... boyajian@ruby.enet.dec.com (The Man from Another Place) 1992-08-18 05:09
In article <1992Aug17.225750.11961@ucc.su.OZ.AU>, () writes...

} What I cannot figure out is the references to the 14 cassettes of the
} series being available in Japan. At 3 episodes per video, that's 42
} episodes.

Which suggests that each Japanese cassette contains only two episodes.
Keep in mind that because of the different scan rates between NTSC
(which is used in the US and Japan) and PAL (the UK and Oz), you can
pack a little more onto the same length of tape in PAL than you can in
NTSC.

The Japanese laserdisc boxed set is a 15-disc set with two episodes per
disc.

} How many were in the complete series, anyway? And.... I am confused as
} to how many episodes make up an American TV series. 6? 13?

There's no standard number of episodes that make up an American "series"
(or "season", as we call them). It depends on when during the year the
series starts, how well it does in the ratings, etc. A season can run
6 episodes or 13 or 22 or anything in between. To answer both of your
questions at once, the original American run of TWIN PEAKS is as follows:

1st Season: 1 two-hour pilot + 7 1-hour episodes
2nd Season: 1 two-hour episode (season premiere) + 21 1-hour episodes

(In the US, however, the last two episodes were shown combined as a
2-hour "movie".)

Total: 30 hours worth, not including the pilot, which is not released
along with the other episodes on video because the rights to it are
held by a different company.
