The movie was called "Don't Tell Her It's Me" and also starred Steve
Guttenberg and Jamie Gertz. It was advertised in Cleveland for a very
short time. We planned to see it, but it disappeared from the screens
before we had a chance.

He also did some TV movie a while back, something wherein he played a

WHAT'S THE BLOODY ADDRESS? dbc3027@venus.tamu.edu (COPAS, DOUGLAS BYRON) 1991-03-18 13:28
I've noticed many people posting about an address we can write to, to keep
twin-peaks on the air. Could someone please re-post it? Our software kills
articles after they are a few days old, so I can't review all the old
postings.

Thanks in advance,

Well, the movie's star and writer lives here in Lexington. It was originally
supposed to co-star Kim Delaney, but she was replaced by Sherilyn. My
understanding is that it will be a very different movie from a
Seagal/Norris/Speakman-type beat-em-up. Should be interesting to anyone
intrigued by Eastern philosophy.

pine weasels ma2cs240@uhura.cc.rochester.edu (Gian Di Loreto) 1991-03-18 16:52
I read in a magazine recently that one of the main sources of food
of the Owl (I forget exactly what kind of owl but I looked like the
ones we always see in Twin Peaks) is the pine weasel, the animal Ben
Horne wants to raise. Interesting huh?

Laura was killed by Audrey Horne's supposedly retarded brother, Johnny
Horne. We found out that the killer lived at the Great Northern, which Johnny
does. It turns out that Johnny's soul was easily possessed by the evil
entity Bob, because he is under sedation, supposedly because he is retarded.
However, it turns out that he was not retarded after all, but drugged
throughout his childhood by Dr. Jacoby to appear retarded, so that he could
live out his sexual fantasies with the boy, whom he fell in love with when
deilvering him.

Within the next couple of episodes, Cooper will fall in love (probably
with Norma's sister.)

Also: Cooper, Major Briggs, & the Log Lady will meet to compare notes.
This should be interesting.

Twin Peaks Downunder bakker@cs.uq.oz.au (Paultje Bakker) 1991-03-19 00:40
Twin Peaks In Australia

In Australia TP is being shown on Tuesday nights at 9:30, with no
competition to speak of. Last week we had the episode where the hotel
was full of Icelanders and Audrey appeared in Cooper's bed. I tape
every episode so I can skip through the ads.

The show had a massive hype before it started, with "Who Killed Laura
Palmer" posters appearing all over Sydney. I was looking
forward to it immensely, as I have been a David Lynch fan for years
(Blue Velvet and esp. Wild at Heart). Actually I've found the show
a little disappointing after such a buildup, but it's early days
yet. It seems to be quite similar in theme to Blue Velvet, but a lot
less shocking.

About half the viewers in Australia already know 'whodunit' because
of lolly-brained prats who love to blurt it out at social occasions
just to prove how au fait they are. I've known since someone
let the BOB out of the bag in a seemingly innocuous article in
rec.arts.movies. But really the murder investigation is just a plot
device and knowing doesn't detract much from the enjoyment; isn't it true
that Lynch/Frost at this stage didn't know themselves who the murderer
was going to be?

I really like reading this newsgroup - it gives tantalizing clues
and details of future episodes that make watching the current ones
twice as fun. Keep it up!

I don't watch much TV (other than Twin Peaks, of course :-), so I missed this
when it was first on. However, a friend who knows how much I like TP taped
it for me. I was laughing so hard I couldn't hear most of the dialog.

Just a note on the other parodies. I recognized the first two as being
"The Front Page", and "Streetcar Named Desire". The third I wasn't sure of
(might be just a generic Fred Astaire type movie). Anyone catch enough
inside jokes to place it?

Interesting, all right, but I don't think he wants to raise them, he wants to
get them listed as an endangered species and get development of Ghostwood

Oops! Sorry, he's in a movie that was just recently released (or is it
about to be released?) called "Don't Tell Her It's Me" with Jami Gertz,
Shelley (sp?) Long, and Steve Guttenberg. I saw advertisements and posters
for this as far back as last October, so it is probably out by now...

MacLachlan has been performing on stage here in Seattle? Damn! And I
didn't know about it. Here I've been in town for the better part of two
years and I still don't know what's going on in this city! Time to get a

Michael Ontkean and Peggy Lipton turned up as guest presenters at the Logie
Awards (Australian TV awards), but Michael got a surprise which got him so
pissed off, he's leaving Australia early.
They showed a clip from TP, supposedly of Daryl Somers' (the host) favourite
part from the show. It was the body finding scene, where the Sheriff and Andy
turn Laura's body over and open the plastic, revealing her face. So far so
good, except instead of revealing her face, it was the face of Daryl Somers
made up like Laura was (ie dead). Michael grinned a bit, but didn't laugh as
loud as the crowd did. In the newspaper next day, it was revealed he was
absolutely disgusted and planned to leave Australia early. What a great sense
of humour !

[Finally, the full text.]

A chaste hero fixated on doughnuts and tripping on loose ends is nothing
new, says Biancamaria Fontana. He has been around for at least a century.

      KIN PEAKS

Is Twin Peaks a truly post-modern work, as some critics have
argued? An interesting experiment maybe but one which exploits
conventional rather than literary and visual strategies. The director
has in fact (deliberately or unwittingly) translated into the language
of cinema and of the television soap a traditional genre which
flourished within European literary culture up to the beginning of our
century: the feuilleton.

The analogy is not immediately apparent because we tend to
associate feuilletons-- interminable sagas published in weekly
instalments by the popular press-- with a "period", generally 19th
century, Parisian slums and aristocratic mansions, pirate ships and
buried treasures, babies swapped in paupers' hospitals, poisoned
drinks, gipsies and so on. Diners, sheriffs and the FBI seem out of
place. But that's just historical distortion.

Originally the writer of feuilletons was someone who would use
absolutely anything she could think of to tantalise her readers, search-
ing for the modern, the eccentric and the exotic without feeling, tied
to any particular background.

The basic plot of Twin Peaks is a simple and rather conventional one: a
hero attempts to unmask a crime, punish its authors and vindicate their
innocent victims. David Lynch's hero is Special Agent Dale Cooper (Kyle
MacLachlan) dispatched to investigate the horrific murder of a local
girl. Agent Cooper is a knight sans peur et sans reproche, immaculate from
his metal shinpads and bullet-proof vest to the top of his brilliantined
hair with an exagerated respect for his duties and Federal regulations.
He is innocent, brave, honest, generous, loyal, punctillious, pedantic,
priggish and is moreover guided in his quest for truth by the assistance
of superior forces.

He takes an obsessive interest in trivial practical details and his
untimely remarks on black coffee and cherry pie, uttered at the moments
of greater dramatic tension, are probably the single most famous feature of
the serial (this obsessive interest he shares in fact with Dumas's Edmond
Dantes, who in the pages of the Count of Monte Cristo engages in tiresome
comparisons between French and Turkish, strong and weak, hot and
not-so-hot coffee). Predicatbly, Cooper is chaste and his notion of
pleasure runs to a comfortable bed and a generous supply of doughnuts.

In Eugene Sue's Les Mysteres de Paris (probably the most famous of all
19th-century popular narratives) the hero, Rodolphe Prince of Gerolstein,
fights a private war against crime; he is superhumanly clever, rich and
powerful, and secretly manipulates the othe characters. American
democratic sensibility would not allow this and the fedral agent's
relations to his assistants and to his enemies remain rigorously
egalitarian.

The object of Cooper's quest, the murder victim, Laura Palmer (Sheryl
Lee), is an "innocent" girl who (like America) has been led by ex-
istential restlessness and sexual curiosity into corruption. That sexual
corruption for a woman is a terminal sin is one of the established truths
of the genre: in the Mysteres de Paris, Gerolstein finally recognises in
the child prostitute FleurMarie his own lost daughter. She is restored
to her princely status, but since she has been "tainted", is sentenced to
a premature death.

Blonde, soft, sensual, smiling vacantly from the picture on her
parents' mantelpiece, the ambiguous Laura forms a sharp contrast with
Cooper's sleek stiffness and self-contented moralism.

Laura is a girl "full of secrets" and secrets, Cooper warns us, are
dangerous. The existence of mysteries and their progressive unveiling was a
major source of surprise and gratification for the reader of the 18th and
19th century popular narratives. In the world of the feuilleton, goodness
is equivalent to transparency: everywhere deceit and secrecy serve the
cause of evil.

In Twin Peaks mysteries take generally the form of cryptic and ambiguous
phrases, and Cooper's investigation consists largely in decodig verbal
clues, in solving a series of "riddles" ("The owls are not what they seem"
he murmurs, struck by a sudden illumination, as D'Artagnan cries "C'est
lui!, Lui, cet homme!" every time he recognises in a passing stranger the
Cardinal's spy Rochefort). Reviewers have remarked on the unusual length to
which Lynch carries his intrigue, and have suggested that the endlessly
delayed solution of the murder, and the breaking down of the story into
innumerable sub-plots illustrate the post-modern experience of an
ever-vanishing narrative.

Yet Lynch's approach would have hardly surprised the writers of the last
century, who produced their novels week by week and resorted to all kinds
of tricks to stimulate or lull indefinitely their readers' attention,
especially when the formula proved successful.

Television and cinema have accustomed us to short narratives and a short
span of attention. They also seem to endorse a fairly rigid distinction
of genres; social comedy, thriller, historical drama, science fiction, hor-
ror, fantasy.

Above all Lynch has revived a taste for the eccentric and the bizarre.
In a rather hysterical but determined attempt to break through the
legions of beautiful, young, fit, smiling bodies which populate the
television screen, Lynch (who made his international debut directing The
Elephant Man) has resorted to dwarfs, giants, women with a patch on one
eye, men with one arm, talking birds, people whose hair turns white over-
night. These images would have been perfectly at home in many respectable
18th and 19th century works, where raving insanity, disfigurements and
mutilations were a matter of course.

Inside the television screen there is a television screen. Throughout
the story, the inhabitants of Twin Peaks are shown watching the episode
of a series called Invitation To Love. When the Sheriff walks into his
office and asks his secretary whay has happened she replies by updating
him on the plot of the soap oblivious to a series of "real" dramatic events
which have occurred in his absence.

Lynch's trick, if not original is amusing: but the joke is on us. The
dream of postmodernist critics, the evervaishing-plot, had already
seduced our great-grandmothers. There is no way out of the feuilleton: we
are still trapped inside it and likely to remain there for a long, long
time.

I wonder if Frank Silva was a Dresser, one who helps actors into their

Not lately - I'm not sure he's even been in Seattle since Blue Velvet...
He was born in Yakima, is a U. Dub grad, and Lynch picked him out of a
Seattle theatre for Dune. After Dune turned out to be a flop, he went
back to Seattle for plays for a coupla years, then when Lynch wanted to
Blue Velvet, he gave Kyle a call - and the guy's never looked back since.

Actor in the vision of shot Copper s117986@lehtori.tut.fi (Janne Salmij{rvi) 1991-03-21 05:03
Last night I saw an episode (after that one in which Cooper was shot) where
there was this tall actor telling riddles for Cooper (who was laying on the
floor few bullets in his stomach). Who was this actor and why he seems so
familiar to me ? (i.e. what other series/films has he been in ?)
Thanks in advance...

It was broadcast on ABC on Wednesday evening. It showed Cooper in bed,
surrounded by Katherine, the LMFAP, and others. He said something like
"I had this awful dream that we were broadcasting on Saturday night." Then
everyone said "Ooh, what a bad dream". Then Cooper looked up at Katherine
and said something like "Auntie Em, I'm glad it was only a bad dream. There's
no place our home, on Thursday nights". Then the announcer mentioned
TPs new place and time. (This is from memory....my faulty memory). Anyway,
I thought it was corny! Still, it was great to see these guys again,
even if it was only for 30 seconds!!!

I can't wait for a new episode!!!!!

Actually, Laura is not dead at all. The body that was found was that

Re: Whow did Lill Laura Palmer? nolty@kastor.caltech.edu (Bob Nolty) 1991-03-21 13:49
Well, it's pretty simple really. The FBI forensics man said Laura got pecked
by a minah bird. So naturally, when agent Cooper had this dream about a one
armed man named MIKE and a killer named BOB, and this one-armed shoe salesman
showed up who looked MIKE and had a veterinarian friend named Bob, and the
vet had a client who was a known drug runner and owned a minah bird, suspicion
fell on the drug runner. But while they were looking for the drug-runner's
cabin they came across this crazy lady who said she heard a THIRD MAN the
night of the murder. So when drug runner said he was unconscious when his
drug runner friend and Laura disappeared, and later the one-armed shoe salesman
went into a trance and became MIKE and said BOB was an inhabiting spirit, and
then a room service waiter offered a stick of gum to Laura's father, Agent
Cooper immediately arrested Laura's father who went into a trance, became
BOB and confessed. If I've seen it once, I've seen it a thousand times.

Don't have the list, but be wary of one thing: A lot of people will tell
you that the Salish Lodge was used for the Great Northern Hotel. This is
not true- Salish was used for EXTERIORS ONLY. The nearby Kiana Lodge was
used for interiors for the Great Northern, and for the Martell lodge.

(shaking finger) ah ah ah, Geoffry! Now you know we can't tell you that!
I realize that the land Down Under has just started TP, and we can't ruin
all the fun for you....but if I must tell you....

It was the log lady. She whacked Laura over the head with her log when
Laura caught Margaret and Mayor Dwayne Milford (the third man) making
love in the train car. The Log Lady was secretly the publisher of
"Fleshworld" and Leo and Jaque were the chief photographers. Laura
had always been a peeping tom and went just a little too far one night.
Theresa Banks was actually in her 30's and was the person that the log
lady took 'Fleshworld' away from in a corporate takeover, and Margaret
believed that Laura was out for revenge...since she and Theresa were
lovers.

Hope that helps!

Obviously you're not an old hacker. :-)
But seriously, the joke is that the number 31 represented in the
octal numeric system (base 8) is equivalent to the number twenty-five in the
decimal system you know and love. The standard abbreviations for the systems
are OCT and DEC. Therefore, OCT 31 = DEC 25 and Halloween and Christmas are
the same! :)

Kyle was on the Arsenio Hall show last night (here in So. Cal.).
If the show is yet to be broadcast in your area, you can still catch it.
The highlight is when he talks about his childhood (and adulthood) fascination

have to add "at Disneyland" - I'm not used to conversing with out-of-staters).
It was very "damn fine cup of joe"'ish. And damn if the man doesn't have a

Update of the Directors List. rlifk@termix.termo.unit.no (Roar Larsen) 1991-03-22 06:20
Organization: SINTEF

The following is posted for a friend, Geir Skaugen, currently without net
access, but desperately trying to get it...:

On the Directors list there was one film missing from the David Lynch
filmography.

In 1990 David Lynch made a 40 minutes short film for the French paper "Le
Figaro" for promoting French culture, or whatever passes for such,
:-) in the U.S.
It is called "The Cowboy And The Frenchman" (or vice versa) and features
among others Jack Nance and hundreds of snails...

The world is a sad place indeed if one has to be a homosexual to enjoy
another person's smile.

It was, as they said, Noel Coward; specifically, Private Lives. The
main lines I remember being quoted were about the potency of cheap music
(only they said something other than music), and the tagline "Very
<adjective>, <placename>," both of them famous lines from Private Lives.
And the general ultra-sophistication, with martinis and cigarette
holders and attempts at British accents.

This is off the subject of twin-peaks ... but Mic Fleetwood portrayed one
of the "fish people" in the episode you are referring to. I believe he
was the one that the explosive material was found on.

Actually, unless a person is in a household with a TV gizmo that actually
reports what they are watching (I think one of the rating systems does this),
it doesn't make a difference what you actually do, only what you report. For
example, I believe Nielsen families keep logs that are checked off/filled out
by hand. Likewise, if you are polled by phone, you can report you watched TP
whether you did or not. They don't quiz you about the plot to validate your
response or have some detective investigate you. So ask your friends to say
they watch TP even if they don't watch and to write letters to ABC thanking
them for bringing it back :-)

Seriously, though, do encourage people to watch. Many people are convinced one
has to be a Peaks Freak to understand what is going on and to enjoy it. Try and
make the point that this is not the case, that they will enjoy it even if they
don't know anything about what went on before, but if they are curious, you can
bring them up to date on the high points. "Try it! You'll like it!" ought to be
our motto. Also, if you are watching with what the RHPS people call 'virgins',
don't volunteer comments on what is going on. Wait to be asked.

Really its just that we're sick and tired of people thinking we all
live in Igloos, ride dog sleds and our police wear Red dress tunics
while on duty. As far as the bad Qubecer accents go this kinda bugs
me, as I think it would bother an Englishman who heard an American/
Canadian doing a bad English accent. Its not a fear of world opinion
really, we'd just like people to know what we're about abit more.

I suppose if you're a certain sort of dilettante it is.

Lynch and Cage aren't of the same era, they don't look alike, they
don't wrestle with the same sorts of aesthetic problems, they don't
work in the same fields and their respective bodies of work don't
resemble one another in the slightest. What they *do* have in common
is that certain sorts of art-newbies think they can wow people by
dropping their names. I guess they're both the kind of
outside-the-mainstream types that pop culture like to canonize every
now and then, as if to assure itself of its cutting-edge credentials.
That's hardly something Lynch and Cage (and William Burroughs and the
other people who have gotten this treatment) are to be blamed for, but
I suppose it is a similarity of sorts.

Is that what you meant?

I keep hearing this. Are Canadians actually worried that world
opinion will turn on the portrayal of a handful of people on a
not-very-realistic TV show? I don't go around wringing my hands over
how Americans are portrayed every time a psychopathic cannibal
psychiatrist turns up in a movie: "Jeepers, I wish they wouldn't make
it seem like Americans are psychopathic cannibal psychiatrists!"
(FACT: less than 10% of the psychiatrists in the US are actually
practicing cannibals. :) But Canadians seem inordinately afraid we'll
think they're all slovenly criminals with bad Quebecois accents. Is
there some sort of inferiority complex at work here or what?

The thing is. . . really, I don't know *anyone* who thinks that. Not
one person. Maybe I'm unusual in that I live a half hour from the
border, but I've been around a bit and have never met anyone in, say,
Ukiah, California or Springfield, Missouri, who appeared to think that
Canada was one big Nelson Eddy movie. Around this part of the
country, Toronto is a popular vacation destination even among people
who would never dream of riding a dog sled or staying in an igloo.

How about it, Americans? Can we just stipulate it? Canada is NOT
LIKE THAT. Don Cherry OK, Bob and Doug maybe, but Nelson Eddy,
igloos, huskies, red tunics are right out. NOT LIKE THAT.

OK, that's settled. Besides, everyone knows it's much more like "Anne
of Green Gables." :)

I agree...I've lived in North Dakota, Louisiana, Connecticut, Maine, and Ohio
and I don't know of anyone who thinks that. In fact, I never heard of it
until you just mentioned it.

I mean, though, there are stereotypes everywhere. What about the typical
American...you know, the one with the southern drawl, wearing a cowboy
hat and boots, like the ones you see on Dallas?

And the typical American tourist...with sunglasses, florid flowery shorts and
a camera slung over one shoulder, resting on the opposite hip, a pot belly.

I mean, does anyone *really* think that is what America is like?

I don't get this stereotyped image of Canada from the Renault brothers. The
only thing I will agree on is the fake accents. Because, sometimes it really
bugs me when people try to make a cajun accent. It is *so* phony. The
closest thing I've ever heard to a cajun accent that was not cajun was somebody
from Quebec, Canada...and he wasn't *trying* to sound cajun, that's just the
way he sounded. But, then again, cajuns supposedly have originated from that
area of Canada anyway....

(I know this doesn't have much to do with Twin Peaks)

CAN'T WAIT TIL THURSDAY!!!

(I'm going to purposely have to refrain myself from reading this newsgroup
until I've seen the episode on Thursday, so as not to have all those
igloo-dwelling Canadians spoil it for me) :)

Yours,
Keith
