The late Leland Palmer, aka Killer BOB, has resurfaced on another <initials>
show: StarTrek: The Next Generation (STTNG). The 2.27 episode here in Happy
Valley shows that the Leland whacko persona has survived transmutation,
transportation, time distortion, and a lot of poor dialogue.
He still rants, he still raves over a lost love one (did his wife really
die in a flood - or was it BOB?) and goes gonzo weird. Ah, consustency.
He truly is now a man from a different place.
I know: TP LIVES in another dimension!

I don't think there was ever a consensus reached here on the net.
Many thought it was the shadow of a boot (ie. a reference to Leo's
boots which would latter be found at his house). Others thought it
was a bird. Whether it was Waldo or an Owl caused another split.
I think only Lynch will answer for sure what it was.

Canto VI of the OF features a witch named Alcina, who ensnares knights with her beauty (much like the widow Milford), and when she tires of them: "And, lest her disappointed lovers spread Report of this lascivious life of hers, She plants them in a very different bed, Converting them to palm trees or to firs, Or olive-trees, or cedars, or instead, The lesser status of a bush confers, Or turns them into animals or streams, Or any form that pleasing to her seems." COOP: I need a pep talk... fi@grebyn.com (Fiona Oceanstar) 1991-03-02 08:26
Saturday, Mar 2nd
This morning when I checked into my e-mailbox, I found a couple dozen
responses from TP fans who are getting involved in COOP. Super! I had
been getting a wee bit burned out on the whole project, since it's
taking so much time away from my usual writing obligations, but when I
get your cards and letters, I feel re-inspired. Please keep talkin',
and let me know about your plans for a COOP chapter in your area.
If you want to help the cause, but you don't have much time to devote,
choose one of the following:
1 min. --> call a local/campus radio station and ask them if they know
about COOP yet
2 min. --> call a local/campus radio station and ask them to do a
announcement about COOP
5 min. --> send off for a T-shirt and the letterhead
10 min. --> call a half-dozen fellow Peakheads and ask them if
they'd be interested in being an *officer* (wow--
big trip, huh? be a COOP *president" already (-:)
20 min. --> post the info on a local/student b-board (both electronic
and otherwise)
1-2 hrs. --> post the info on *lots* of local/student b-boards
2-4 hrs. --> throw a COOP party at your place
Please note that with *none* of these options are you required to get
heavily involved, committed, or otherwise time-drained. You can choose
exactly how much or how little you want to do.
And then write to the newsgroup, or write to me, and brag all about what
you did.

Yes, Another Survey giron@husc9.harvard.edu (Luis Giron) 1991-03-02 16:14
Well, since it looks like in the US we are not likely to see new episodes of TP for a while, I thought it would be interesting to have another survey of alt.tv.twin-peaksers. The subject is your favorite episodes of Twin Peaks. Since by now UK viewers have found out WKLP and have seen the next one or two episodes, I request them to respond as well. Basically, I would like to receive a list of your three favorite episodes, by number and short synopsis of the subject matter. You are given ten points in total, which you may divide among the three episodes as weights. So for example, if your favorite episode of all time is 2008, you can assign it eight points, and give one point to your other two favorites. Or you can give four to your favorite and three to your other two favorites; you get the idea. If there is enough response, I hope to post the results soon. Hope to hear from you all!! I like it! Here are some ideas, in case anyone out there is planning to do it:
- roomful of TP fans watching whatever ABC puts on in place of TP; watch
for a few seconds, then turn to the camera together and go "yuck!" and
stick in a tape of a TP episode and cheer when the opening credits come
on.
- people watching a few seconds of whatever TP is replaced by, then
switching off the set and putting a log on top of it and smiling
contentedly.
- a figure with long grey hair and jean jacket crawling over a bed in a
bright white spotlight going "Iger! What happened to Twin Peaks????!?"
(Lots more possibilities, of course... these are just off the top of my head).

We held it at a local restaurant (no charge for the space, cause people attending bought lots o food). We showed old episodes, fed people donuts, took donations, and sold T-shirts and buttons. When all was said and done, we had about 100 letters, 100 new COOP members, 20 T-shirt orders, and a bunch of button orders. We also met all the other people in the community who were organizing petitions and letterwriting campaigns. In conjunction with this, we ran an all-day promotional campaign on the UIowa music station -- lots of mentions, cuts from the soundtrack and the Cooper tapes, and Peaks trivia. A couple of clues I missed the first time jak@ceres.physics.uiowa.edu 1991-03-03 12:35
At the meeting of COOP here in Iowa City, we watched various clips, and I noticed a couple of clues I missed before. In the very first episode, I think right at the beginning when Pete found Laura's body, there is a shot of Josie standing there wearing her vicuna coat and black gloves, the outfit she was wearing when she shot Cooper. Also, in the dream with the LMFAP, there is a shot with the Dwarf in front of a red curtain shaking, and making noises like he's sobbing or laughing or something. Well, in the episode where we, the audience, discover that Leland is BOB, Cooper and Truman talk to Leland in the Great Northern. There's a shot of a doorway, and Leland goes around the corner, and then there's a shot of Leland, with his back to the camera, standing in front of a red curtain laughing, just like the Dwarf was doing. Some people don't agree with me, but I think the Dwarf is Leland, or at least represents Leland. In on final complaint, here in Iowa City last Saturday, in the Twin Peaks timeslot, the local ABC station showed an episode of Magnum, P.I.. Great. They dump Twin Peaks cuz they don't like the ratings, and then rerun a show that has been off the air for a few years. ABC. Network of Mental Giants. He said them to Coop only so that when Coop found them to be true independently, Coop would be able to trust whatever else the Giant might have to tell him. Since "The owls are not what they seem" was the message that appeared on the Major's deep space monitor (and note: it didn't necessarily come from aliens -- Briggs' superior officer told Coop later that the signals did *not* originate from space), Coop seems to have "interpreted" this "clue" to indicate that the Giant had sources of knowledge beyond Coop's. I had a Laura Palmer / Bob dream a couple months ago. I was in the morgue with Laura's dead body when she opened her eyes and sat up. She was still blue, but she looked straight at me and gave me one of those BOB creepy smiles that took about 5 seconds to form. Then she started to creep toward me with that malevolent grin. That's when I woke up. Freaked me out![src]

The song "Waltzing Matilda" was recently re-recorded by the Irish band The Pogues, perhaps three years ago. I can't remember the name of the album the song appeared on, but it was a very good version of the song. Any of The Pogues albums are a good investment. Depending on the date of the entry in the diary, it's likely Laura was writing about this version. BYW: Who is it that mail should be addressed to at ABC?[src]

Waltzing Matilda is indeed a real song. I believe it's
australian, although it might just be associated with Australia. The
lyrics of it that I remember are:
"Waltzing Matilda, Waltzing Matilda. She'll come a-waltzing in
with me. And they sang as they waltzed," da da da da da da da dum,
"Waltzing Matilda" da da dum.
You get the idea.

Easy. Can you tell me what Laura said about it? ( and no, it hasn't
been played on TP ).
WM is perhaps the most famous Australian folk/popular song. Words by
A.B. ("Banjo") Paterson ( who also wrote the poem "The Man From Snowy
River" with which the movie has nothing in common except the title ).
Music - "traditional".
The second most popular folk song, and the most recorded, is Eric Bogle's
"And the Band Played Waltzing Mathilda", so you can see how important WM is.
It's a ballad about a swagman - these days you'd call him a 'homeless person' -
and his death, resisting arrest for the crime of sheep-theft. We nearly made
it the national anthem. And yes - there's a ghost in it.
I'm incredibly tempted to post the words but it just doesn't seem relevant
enough!
Sam - an aussie in LA
[ .sig is from a Bushwacker's Band album called "And the Band Played
Waltzing Mathilda" which I recommend heartily to anyone who wants to hear
WM and Bogle's song - Sam]

More on the ultimate Twin Peaks experience emmanuel@well.sf.ca.us (Emmanuel Goldstein) 1991-03-05 01:20
couple of weeks ago, I mentioned that I was going to start watching Twin Peaks in real time, seeing each episode on the DAY that it was intended to take place on. I've been doing this for four days now and I find it to be very enlightening. Today (Monday) I witnessed Laura's funeral. Albert and his team arrived yesterday, cousin Maddy arrived today. You don't realize it watching from week to week but there is a real pace to this show. I've been trying to keep track of where everybody is at what time. The only inconsistency I've seen so far is Catherine asking her husband yesterday (Sunday) what that FBI man wanted "today". Of course, the FBI man had been there the previous day (Saturday). I suspect they filmed that scene before realizing it was going to go in a different episode. I heartily recommend seeing the show this way especially now that it's that time of year (late February, early March). You can even start this Friday and get a sense of the flow. The timeline posted in alt.tv.twin-peaks is especially valuable for this. emmanuel@well.sf.ca.us :[src]

Please forgive my ignorance but I thought that the Giant implied, in his

certainly important) and not simply a means of establishing the Giant's

Economist Mar0291 (WKLP spoiler) burns@endor.uucp (John Burns) 1991-03-05 06:10
Excerpt from the article "Sloping off" in the Economist (March 2, 1991): Sloping off But the failure of "Twin Peaks" has been too spectacular (its most recent rating placed it 85th out of 89 network shows) to be blamed on bad scheduling. In fact, the second season of "Twin Peaks" has been much inferior to the first. The first warning sign came when Mr Lynch and his partner, Mark Frost, failed to resolve the show's central theme, "Who Killed Laura Palmer?" before the three-month summer break. By the time the programme resumed last autumn, much of the tension that had surrounded Miss Palmer's murder had faded away. Making matters worse, the show took a marked turn towards the fantastic. Mr Lynch and Mr Frost had previously done a brilliant job of parodying a number of television and film genres--the soap-opera, the mystery, film noir--without sacrificing the elements of each that gave them their suspense. Their flair for the surreal and the genuinely scary kept the show's tone too ominous to be dismissed as camp. But when the programme shifted from the hyper-real to the super-natural--coded radio signals from space, Laura's killer turning out to have been an elusive spirit who inhabited her father's body--it quickly became disappointingly silly. --- I agree with the above, except weren't the signals FROM Earth TO space? Not quite... ``Waltzing Matilda'' is an old (possibly traditional?) Australian song, played at public gatherings like parades and Rotary Club meetings. (Check out the film _The Coca-Cola Kid_.) Someone from Oz could probably clarify this. Recently (in the last twenty years or so) folksinger Eric Bogle wrote an antiwar song called ``And the Band Played `Waltzing Matilda' ''---about the bitterness a crippled soldier feels upon his homecoming. This is the song covered by the Pogues on their album _Rum, Sodomy, and the Lash_. I don't remember which Eric Bogle album the original is on, but you might want to look for it---it has a much different feel from the Pogues. There are some people who would also take issue with your claim that the Pogues are Irish, but I won't touch that... --Sean Obligatory TP content: I wrote my letter![src]

Saturday Night Dead jlschwar@athena.mit.edu (Jeffrey L Schwartz) 1991-03-05 11:30
The following article appears in the March 8 issue of Entertainment.
Typed without permission.
Saturday Night Dead
"We're in trouble, and we need help." With those words, spoken at a press
conference on the set of the Great Northern Hotel, David Lynch acknowledged
the grim news: Twin Peaks, the critically acclaimed, anemically rated prime-
time soap he created with Mark Frost, is out of business, and only public
support can save it from cancellation. On Feb. 15, ABC suspended Peaks from its
lineup, and said that it would air this season's six remaining episodes at
an unspecified date. Such a move usually portends doom for a series, so
Lynch and Frost are entreating fans to write to entertainment chief Robert
Iger and lobby ABC for a new time slot--preferably Wednesdays at 10 p.m., where
Equal Justice now airs. "Our audience doesn't stay home on Saturdays," says
Frost. "We'd like to be on a week night--that gives people a chance to talk
about it the next day at the office."
Fans have reacted swiftly and, of course, eccentrically. In Washington, D.C.,
a rally sponsored by the ad-hoc committee COOP (Citizens Opposing the
Offing of Peaks) drew over 200 people, many of them bearing owls, logs, eye
patches, and cherry pies; according to organizer H. Keith Poston, several
fans dressed in Saran Wrap as a sartorial tribute to the late Laura Palmer.
Since then, COOP's ranks have swelled to 5000 in seven cities. Peaks'
imperiled status has also roused Viewers for Quality Television, the
organization that aided successful write-in efforts to save Cagney & Lacey
and Designing Women. On Feb. 21, the group urged ABC to give the series
"more time to spin its unique web" and offered to assist fans in a
save-the-show campaign.
Last fall, Twin Peaks performed solidly on Saturdays--the episode that revealed
Laura's murderer ranked 44th in the Nielsens--but when the mystery ended,
producer-writer Harley Peyton admits, Peaks hit a mild creative slump
("We couldn't just have another homicidal maniac arrive in town the next day")
and after several preemptions, ratings plummeted. When Peaks returns, a
special may recap current plotlines, and Lynch will direct the season's
final hour--a showdown between Cooper and psychotic ex-FBI agen Windom
Earle("Our cross between Hannibal Lecter and Soupy Sales," says Peyton) that ends
with a "phenomenal cliff-hanger.
If ABC cancels Twin Peaks, Lynch and Frost may sell the series to another
network or seek foreign financing; the show is already an enormous hit in
England, Italy, and spain. In any even, Lynch will remain busy. This
spring, he'll cowrite and direct On the Air, a "completely wacko" ABC
comedy pilot about television's early days, and French businessman Francis
Bouygues has agreed to provide $70 million for Lynch's next three films.
Lynch urges viewers to write to Iger (some fans have already sent him stale
doughnuts) at 2040 Avenue of the Stars, Century City, Calif. 90067.
"If this show is going to go on," he says, "people have got to write in.
I'm sure Bob would love to hear from you."
Please excuse any typos; I've got to run to class!

Kyle Maclahan interview on SF tv rguion@ralph.mips.com (Richard Guion) 1991-03-05 11:47
Kyle Machlahan (Secret Agent Cooper on Twin Peaks) was interviewed this morning on the AM San Francisco program on Ch. 2. He was being interviewed about his role in the Doors movie, but I caught it just as he was being asked about TP. The interviewer asked him if there was, at this point in the remaining unaired six episodes, a resolution to the series. Kyle said that as they were written intending for the show to continue, the last shows were open ended and the viewers might be left hanging forever. He was then asked why TP was cancelled. He gave a very frank answer composed of 2 points: One which he blamed ABC for putting the program on Saturday nights. The other one he blamed Lynch and Frost for not getting more involved in the series. He said the actors signed on to do a Lynch/Frost production, but they left it in the hands of other people this year and went off to do other projects. Finally, he was asked about his feelings, if he would like to see Twin Peaks continue. He said that he would if they could restore the quality that was there originally (which I take to mean the first season of shows). He also said that he loved playing the character (Cooper) and that he also liked the fine directors that they had working on Twin Peaks this year. But if they could not bring back the quality or if Lynch/Frost did not get more involved, he would just as soon not go on and savor the memories of the last 2 seasons of Twin Peaks. I sure do hope everyone here who reads this newsgroup is writing to ABC asking them to bring back Twin Peaks. I think that the networks DO listen to the letters, especially if there are lots of them, as you can see by the Quantam Leap Ad on NBC about the viewer mail asking that QL be restored to Wed. nights again. -- Richard Guion ---------------------------- "This product has | rguion@ralph.mips.COM | the official NINTENDO seal of ---------------------------- disapproval."[src]

ATTN ALL PEAKS FANS: COOP NEEDS YOU FRIDAY! czahrt@umaxc.weeg.uiowa.edu (Robert D. Cappel...you can call me The Bob) 1991-03-05 13:34
ATTN ALL PEAKS FANS: COOP NEEDS YOU FRIDAY!
Before I begin the purpose of this memo, anyone who takes part in this MUST
do two things:
1) Try their best to NOT let ABC in on the following plan. It could collapse
as a result.
2) You MUST respond to me, Bob Cappel, at one of the following email
addresses and tell me that you did this.
czahrt@umaxc.weeg.uiowa.edu
cappel@umaxc.weeg.uiowa.edu
Finally, the purpose of this memo.
We need your help this Friday, March 8th. Friday will be the first organized
and synchronized COOP attempt at activism in support of Twin Peaks. We need
your help and it will only take a moment of your time.
On Thursday, March 7, prepare yet another letter of protest fo FAX to BOB
Iger, ABC Entertainment President. Make it polite, to the point, and identify
yourself as an active member of COOP. Once drafted, save it till Friday.
On Friday, at 12:30 EST (11:30 CST, 10:30 MST, 9:30 PST) we begin. At that
moment and not a moment sooner please call one of the numbers below to protest
the cancellation of Peaks. Ask for BOB Iger. You won't get through to him,
but convey your message of protest to the receptionist. Be polite, brief,
identify yourself as a member of COOP, identify your city and state, and
get off the telephone. Call only once. Following your call, FAX
your letter to one of the FAX numbers below.
Fo those who cannot get through in LA, call the Audience Relations/NYC number
listed below. If at all possible, get through to LA, but don't give up
simply because you could not get through.
At 2:00 pm EST (1:00 CST, 12:00 MST, 11:00 PST) we end. At that moment, and
not a moment later, please stop calling ABC. Our object is to politely tie
up the ABC Entertainment Division with our concerns. The more precision we
apply to our actions, the more daunting they become.
Friday's action is an excercise, a drill. We want to see just what computer
wise Twin Peaks fans can do. All of us in COOP believe that the INTERNET
will play a key role in our campaign, if not lead it. As our vanguard, we
trust you will participate on Friday.
Once again, please write me, or respond to this note after you have made
your call and sent your FAX. The reason for this is so we may send an
accurate accounting of how many took place to the press.
Here are the numbers:

It sounds like a good idea to show the huge amount of support for Twin Peaks. However, there are several problems. You called the attention of all "Twin Peaks" fans. However, some of us are not in a chapter of COOP (such as I, in Cleveland) Also, some of us do not have access to a fax machine. However, I, for one, would like to participate in a massive effort to save Twin Peaks. I have written my letter, but is there something I, and other's in my similar situation, could do to be involved? It's a reference to a science-fiction story that takes place in the near
or not-so-near future. The tag line is from some game show, and is usually
the game show host asking the audience: "Will you buy *that* for a buck?".
Unfortunately, I don't remember the plot, author or name of that particular
story. The game show was only incidental to the plot, if I remember
correctly.
The implication is that the thing, thought, idea, opinion, or whatever is
worth a little bit, but not much. It's worth enough to spend a buck on,
but not more. In the story, the line was considered quite hilarious (at
least by the game show audience -- which was portrayed as being similar
to the audience on "Let's Make a Deal" or "Funniest Home Videos").

I can't remember the name (etc.) Actually that is not right-the Pogues's song is actually "And the Band Played Waltzing Mathilda" which is not anything like the real Waltzing Mathilda. The real Waltzing Mathilda is the unofficial Australian anthem-equivalent to, say, "My Country 'Tis of Thee". It's a fairly old song, all about a rover who steals a sheep and gets caught (there's a bit more than that of course). The Pogues song is an anti-war song. The title comes from the playing of Waltzing Mathilda as the ship of troops heads for Gallipoli. Concerning a Pacific Northwest Chapter Of COOP... halcyon!hikaru@seattleu.edu (Demosthenes) 1991-03-05 17:02
It's ironic that there isn't a Seattle-area chapter of COOP, since this is where Twin Peaks was filmed.... Or is there? I would be thrilled to start one - except as a JUNIOR HIGH student, I would have limited time and money resources for it. Sorry - but my grades are far more important to me than Peaks. I'd be glad to join - but anything I'd do to start a chapter would be ineffectual at best. I'm sorry about the lack of warning, but the Twin Peaks archive will be out of action for the next couple of days. I'm in the process of rationalising servers, and the disk that the archive was on was moved to a new machine. I had some problems with the transfer, so it's taken a bit longer than what I expected. Survey trends ramos@aludra.usc.edu (Luis Ramos) 1991-03-05 18:20
Keep those survey responses coming. Trends have indicated a lead by
some program shown on FOX, followed not too far behind by an NBC show
and a show from an independent network. Oh, before I forget, I am reminding
those who answered "No, not yet but I plan to" to question 10 not to forget
sending in their letters.
I plan on posting results on Thursday, March 7 (to allow for network latency).
I've included a copy of the questionnaire in case you missed the original
posting.
Louie
------------questionnaire starts here------------------------------------
1. What shows do you watch *regularly* during prime time (8:00 pm to 11:00 pm)
on the non-cable networks (i.e. NBC, CBS, ABC, FOX, etc)? (Quantum Leap
and other "hiatusized" shows this season are acceptable answers). Note
that I will assume you watch TP regularly unless you explicitly specify
otherwise.

commercial comes on, which of the following do you usually do: (please
pick the best answer)
(a) browse through other channels
(b) watch the commercial
(c) do something else while commercial is being shown (i.e. take a piss,

Agreed. If I were reading ABC's mail, I'd stick all the COOP letterhead
mail in a pile off by itself, and figure that some wacko club had gotten
together and held a letter-writing party. That's not as likely to
indicate a real desire to write letters as the same number of independent
letters. They can (fairly) safely assume that they're hearing from most
everyone in COOP, but they'll get really nervous if letters from Joe
average viewer start pouring in spontaneously -- how many others are
there who aren't bothering to write?

TP 3/2/91 (*SPOILERS*) jacobw@phoenix.Princeton.EDU (Jacob S Weinstein) 1991-03-06 14:14
I can't believe you switched Twin Peaks off just before the best
part of that whole episode! I assume you're the only one, so I'll direct
my question to those who stayed tuned: can you BELIEVE it? They really
had me thinking that Leland had killed Laura, but now to find out it was
Gordon- I don't know. It's a bit much. I did like the scene in which they
explained that the creamed corned kid was the illigetimate son of the
drooling old bellhop in the great northern, and that BOB was the
disposessed spirit of the alien ship that had been sending messages to
its home planet, using the log lady's (now burnt) log as an antenna, and
at the same time sapping all of James' and Donna's emotions to power the
transmitter. All along I thought they were just bad actors, and now it turns out that was part of the plot.
I was pretty pissed that they offed audrey, though-- especially
just before the engagement ring was delivered to her door. I knew Coop
liked her, but to find out that he was so serious, and then to have him
wake up with her head in the bed-- wow! Talk about powerful.
Still, now that Wyndam Earl has entered a monastery, I don't
really know what the show is going to do for the rest of the season.

One more call for your top three Twin Peaks episodes. So far a number of people have responded, and I hope to post results next week. Please list the three episodes and the points you allocate to them. Remember you are allowed 10 points, which you may divide up as you please. Don't worry if you don't remember the episode number. If you say "the one where Coop gets shot," or "The one with Coop's dream with the midget," that's fine. Example: 1000Pilot4 pts 2007BOB's ID revealed 4 pts 1002 Coop's dream2 pts Send in those ballots! So far, the leading episode is from the first season, but I won't say more about it till later.
