I think what is meant here is that subsequent interiors were shot in a set in
Van Nuys as mentioned in the original posting. Correct? And is this true,
namely that all interiors beyond the pilot were shot in California?

What about exteriors? I know stock footage was used a lot, but was stuff like
the Dead Dog farm and Glastonbury Grove shot in California also? Some of the
later looked like it could have been a set rather than real. Ditto the cave.

allusions list 2.5 (long) platt@ccu.umanitoba.ca 1991-07-30 15:49
This is a new edition of the allusions list. It includes corrections and some
revisions, but is not quite ready to be called Edition 3. I'm thinking about
putting the list on the file server, but would like some feedback first. What do
you think? Should it go on?

Allusions to other works within Twin Peaks Edition 2.5

Note: these are not meant to be read as a definite link to all these works;
some may be coincidences. In general, most are lighthearted jabs, but some
have real value in solving the mysteries of Twin Peaks. Actually, these are
more likely "footnotes" rather than "allusions". (List originator and editor:

SEASON ONE
(In chronological order starting with 1000):

   1. The Bird: Blue Velvet ends with a shot of a robin with a bug in its
mouth.

   2. "Twin Peaks": Supposedly a fairly obvious sexual reference, I hadn't
heard it used before, although SPY's "Separated At Birth?" book (published
1988) commented on the "Twin (widow's) Peaks" of Bob Eubanks and Butch
(Eddie Munster) Patrick. As well, for a town even more obssessed with
lumber, TP has nothing on Lumberton from Blue Velvet. Also, Blake Edward's
1962 thriller "Experiment In Terror" features Lee Remick as a bank clerk
terrorized by a psycho into stealing from her employers. She lives in
Twin Peaks (in San Francisco) and the psycho's name is Red Lynch!! (CN)
Finally, Entertainment Tonight ran two separate stories on Snoqualmie, WA
(where the TP pilot was filmed) and Twin Peaks, CA (where Lynch is
rumoured to have some land), both of which have grisly murders in their
past.

   3. Harry S. Truman: Not only in reference to the former U.S. president.
The name of the man who lived near Spirit Lake under Mt. St. Helens and
refused to move from his home despite the warning of volcanic eruption was
named Harry Truman, as well (JS).

   4. The name "Laura": In the 1944 movie Laura, a girl named Laura is
killed, only to turn up as someone else. Also in the film, the villian's name
is Waldo (!) Lydecker (!!), and a gun is hidden in a clock, a la the poker
chip from One Eyed Jacks. As well, in a coincidence David Lynch would
probably shrug off, the film starred Dana Andrews, whose initials bear a
resemblance to TP's own Dana Ashbrook. A Laura Palmer is credited with
writing a piece on the fall of Saigon for Rolling Stone. Also, note possible
connection with Laura Dern.

   5. Andy the crying deputy: In an (early 1990) arc of Wiseguy revolving
around a murder in a small lumber town, the police officer that found the
body cried upon its discovery. It was later revealed that the officer himself
was the culprit. (This is probably not a coincidence. The plot of the TP pilot
was well-known within TV circles. Further proof: the town's name was
"Lynchboro"). Last thing on this: the Globe tabloid reported a week before
2006 that Andy killed Laura and was going to murder Lucy, who was planning
to have an abortion.

   6. Leland Palmer: There are two very small (pop.30 and 25 in 1963)
towns in Washingron State named Leland and Palmer (DGP). As well, an
actor named Leland Palmer starred in Bob Fosse's All That Jazz. (LTC).

   7. The song Bobby (and much later James) plays on the jukebox is from
the Lynch/Badalamenti Industrial Symphony. It's called "I'm Hurt Bad".

   8. Ronette on the railroad tracks: Possible redux of Isabella
Rosselini's nude wandering in Blue Velvet.

   9. James The Biker: In an Interview interview, James Marshall said
that David Lynch actually told him to think of James Dean while acting.

   10. Nadine's oneeye: Numerous references, too many to list, but
probably the one that applies here is the character on "Days Of Our Lives".
(Actually, The character on "DOOL" is a hardened, tough male loner, but
Nadine does exhibit some tough characteristics, don't you think?)

   11. Dale Cooper: Dale's middle name is Bartholomew, marking him D.B.
cooper, a la the famous skyjacker. Kyle MacLachlan's performance is said to
have been inspired by Lynch himself.

   12. The OAM: The most famous example of a one-armed man is, of
course, the killer in the Fugitive. On that show, Richard Kimble's pursuant
was named Phillip Gerard.

   13. The flickering lights: Apparently an actual hospital goofup, Lynch
liked it so much he decided to flicker the lights himself. However, the
lights-flickering motif was prevalent in Blue Velvet, Eraserhead, and even
Orson Welles' Citizen Kane. As well, a script purported to be the first draft
has a mention of this.

   14. The videotape: Numerous, including Sex Lies and Videotape.

   15. The reflection in Laura's eye: used on a soap opera in the summer
of 1990, don't know which one. (This is, of course, an homage, rather than an
influence).

   16. The fallen deerhead: The first of many possible references to
Fawlty Towers, which of course also featured a hotel with a harried owner
(DGP). Yet it was a moose head in the Fawlty Towers episode(RH). (However,
DP notes that the deerhead was just discovered that way by Lynch, which sounds
at least a little more plausible)

   17. "Fire, Walk With Me". Fire, is of course, one of the most enduring
symbols in all religions and mythologies, but a few instances that are
relevant to TP: Lynch's own use of fire in other works (Blue Velvet, Wild At
Heart) as passion or danger, and the relgious rites of the druids. The druids
held wood, mistletoe (which is a parasitic plant), and fire as religious rites.
This suggests ties with TP in terms of the spirits trapped in wood,
BOB-as-a-parasite, and BOB-as-fire.

   18. The Log Lady: According to the Rolling Stone Interview with Lynch,
The Log Lady predates Twin Peaks; Lynch was planning an earlier series
with Catherine Coulson starring as the Log Lady.

   19. "Falling"/"The Nightingale": The first of a few Julee Cruise
numbers spliced into the action.

(From 1001)

   20. "Marilyn Monroe and the Kennedys": An obsession shared by
Cooper, Lynch, and Frost, who wrote a script for Goddess, a Monroe movie
that was to be directed by Lynch.

(From 1002)

   21. Ben & Jerry: Twin Peak's largest food freaks share their names
with the allPnatural icePcream merchants.

   22. OnePEyed Jack's: another crude sexual reference, fully explained
by Bobby Peru in "Wild At Heart". Also, the Western with Marlon Brando.

   23. Horne's Sonnet: Shakespeare, Sonnet No. 18

   24. The Dream: Mark Frost has said that the dream imagery (including
the owls) come from his own dreams. The tone and style, however, is pure
Lynch. As commented in the newsgroup before, Lynch is known for his
strange pauses and lags in action at inopportune times. this dates back to
"Eraserhead", which featured many strange, quiet moments. Cooper's
reaction shots hearken back to that film and Jack Nance's lack of emotion.

   25. BOB: The name "Bob" is a source of constant commentary. Lynch is
well known for his daily sojurns to Bob's Big Boy.The recently-published Bob
Book characterizes "Bob" as a generally benevolent guy, although it
acknowledges the evil BOB. Among notable BobsI A "Bob" is thanked on Julee
Cruise's Floating Into The Night LP; There is a church of Bob, a.k.a. the
Church of the Subgenius; Drugstore Cowboy, which stars Matt Dillon as a
junkie named Bob, also features both Heather (Annie) Graham (as Nadine!!)
and Grace Zabriskie (as Bob's mother!!) in its cast, finally, there
is Bob Barker, the game-show host who decided to stop dying his hair and
let it turn naturally white (!!). Also, in Amherst, Nova Scotia at the
turn of the 19th century, a young girl named Esther Cox was legendary for
her claims of disturbances by a poltergeist (one that set fire to her barn)
that she called Bob.

   26. The Little Man From Another Place: In Nicholas Roeg's Don't Look
Now, Donald Sutherland (grieving over the death of his daughter) pursues a
malevolent dwarf in a red suit. As well, his wife is named Laura, and the
movie's film editor, Graeme Clifford, directed an episode of TP (2005)

   27. Venus and Saturn: The statue (presumably of Venus) and the model
of Saturn in the dream sequence may refer to the myth of Saturn, who killed
his children. However, Venus was the daughter of Jupiter, not Saturn. It has
been suggested (by RJG) that BOB=Saturn=bad god, Leland=Jupiter=good god,
Laura=Venus=daughter of good god. Also, BOB refers to his victim's as his
children, therefore making "Jupiter",the son of "Saturn" as well as the
father of "Venus"

   28. Talking backwards: apparently a talent known to Michael
Anderson, which was apprently taught to the rest of the actors in the red
room scenes.

   29. The floor in the dream sequence was seen in Eraserhead. The red
drapes are reminiscent of the red curtains used in the titles to the biblical
epic movie The Robe. This may have also inspired the blue velvet curtains
used in the opening titles of Blue Velvet.

(From 1003)

   30. Madeleine Ferguson: A reference to Vertigo, in which Judy (Kim Novak)
posed as the "dead" Madeleine. As well, Jimmy Stewart's character was named
Scottie Ferguson, giving Madeleine her surname. In Vertigo, Scottie makes Judy
dye her hair blonde to look like Madeleine, a la James making Maddy up like
Laura to catch the killer.) One scene in this movie, in which Scottie is
momentarily confused as to whether he is with Judy or Madeleine, shows this by
having the room spin around them as they embrace, as with Leland/BOB's death
hold on Maddy. The other, fairly _obvious_ reference is probably the only
instance of "identical cousins", namely the main characters from "The Patty Duke
 Show".

   31. "Johnny doesn't know what day it is": A reference, no doubt, to the
Who's epic "Tommy". Perhaps written in anticipation of a storyline where
Johnny is revealed as a savant?

   32. The Bookhouse: There's a posssible connection with a native god
named Bukwus or Bukus(RJG), or even the Roman god Bacchus (JP).If anybody
has anything more to add, please give me a shout.

   33. The dream soul: has anybody with a knowledge of Blackfoot
culture been able to trace this legend? I'm not doubting its existence, but
would like to know more.

(From 1004)

   34. Jacoby's sunglasses: Count Floyd on SCTV sported Ray-Ban
Wayfarer versions of the same glasses, suitable for 3-D viewing. However,
3-D glasses are Blue-Red, while Jacoby's glasses are Red-Blue. Perhaps the
Dr. can "see deeper" into people with his glasses on.

   35. Gordon Cole: A minor character in BIlly Wilder's Sunset
Boulevard, one of David Lynch's all-time favourite movies. (CN and DGP)

    36. Phillip Michael Gerard: See note # 12.

   37. Bob Lydecker: See note #4.

   38. Waldo: See note #4. Also, "The Avengers" had an episode that hinged
on a talking bird or group of talking birds.

   39. Hank's Domino: I'm not sure about this one; any suggestions?

   40. Owls: The first sighting of an owl in TP was in 1004, when Donna
and James went to where they had buried the necklace. An owl hooted above,
startling the two. There have been brief mentions in this newsgroup of the
fact that according to Whitley Streiber's "Communion", the experience of being
abducted by aliens (or whatever) is often erased by the "covering" memory
of a giant owl.

(From 1005)

   41. ITL: While Hank reunites with Norma, Shelly is watching ITL.
Montana is attacking Chet, and Jared is tied up with a blue sash in his
mouth, a la Blue Velvet.

   42. "The Third Man": A possible reference to the movie The Third Man,
in which the "third man" (seen carrying off a dead body) turns out to be the
"victim" himself, thus causing some to believe that Laura was not really
dead, and disguised as Maddy.

   43. "Into The Night": See note #19.

(From 1006)

   44. Cooper's whistling: The tune Cooper blows on his whistle is the flying
saucer's tone in Close Encounters Of The Third Kind. Possible foreshadowing of
the alien stuff?

   45. Audrey spying on Battis through the slats in the closet door: Kyle
MacLachlan did the same thing in Blue Velvet.

   46. Mr. Neff (Catherine Martell's insurance salesman): A reference to
Walter Neff, an insurance salesman in Billy Wilder's RDouble IndemnityS.
(CN)

   47. Barney and Fred (Coop and Ed's secret IDs): 'nuff said.

   48. Hester Prynn: As Blackie notes, the woman in "The Scarlet Letter".

   49. The cherry stem: TP writer Harley Peyton once claimed that his
ex-girlfriend could actually do this.

(From 1007)

   50. Queen of Diamonds: The card that triggered Raymond Shaw
(Laurence Harvey) to kill in The Manchurian candidate. At one point, Rosie
(Janet Leigh) wore a large version of the card at a costume party.

   51. "Such stuff as dreams are made of": More Shakespeare, from The Tempest,
Ac IV, Sc I, line 155. The speaker, Prospero, has just presented a play in which all the
actors were spirits (which he had the power to command) and he had become so
caught up in it that he almost forgot that some spirits were plotting to kill
him. He tells the spirit actors to disperse and makes a very famous speech in
which he says that, just as the spirits disappear, so is human life and all the
world transitory. It goes on very poetically for a number of lines and ends
with: "We are such stuff as dreams are made on; and our little life is rounded
with a sleep." (BM) Actually, this is much more lyrical than its actual use in
Twin Peaks: the speaker is Ben Horne, just before his tryst with the "new girl".
Just another sign of Horne's pretensiousness, I guess (DGP).

52."Who Shot Agent Cooper?": Mark Frost has been quoted as saying
"We were poking a little bit of fun at the 'Who shot J.R.' syndrome. Of course,
he's wearing a bulletproof vest. I wasn't trying to present a mystery."

SEASON TWO

(from 2001)

   53. The Waiter (a.k.a. Senor Droolcup): Another example of Lynch's
tendency towards long, drawn-out, slooooow scenes. The Dell Mibbler scene
is far more excruciating example of this, as noted by many
netters. These scenes are especially agonizing at the tensest cliff-hanger
moments, like right here.

   54. The Giant: Not entirely sure. Giants are common in most
mythologies, but does anybody know the exact source of this giant? Lynch
himself said that Carel Struycken was cast as the Giant just because he saw
him one day (DP). My own theory is that since Michael Anderson, the actor
who plays the LMFAP, was in jail for drug posession at the time of the
filming of 2000, the Giant was cast to replace him (DGP). However, I have
been wrong before.

   55. "A man in a smiling bag": A product of Lynch's days in Philadelphia,
where he lived near a morgue.

   56. The reporter at the site of the burnt sawmill is Mark Frost in an
uncredited role.

   57. Leland's white hair: See note #25.

(From 2002)

   58. When Shelly and Bobby are parked in Major Briggs' Lincoln, the
"Audrey's Dance" music is playing. Bobby tells Shelly to change the station,
and the music abruptly stops, switching to a blues song. A similar trick was
used in 1001, and may be a cinematic allusion to Diva (1982), where the
"incidental" music became part of the foreground action.

   59. Major Briggs' space transmissions: A few may recall the series
Project: UFO from the late '70s (around the time of Close Encounters), which
I believe was based on Project Bluebook.

   60. "Just You And I": an article in British GQ suggested that TP is an
attempt to combine every TV series from the past. In that case, James' song
near the end of the show may be an homage to Rick Nelson's songs at the end
of the Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet. Or maybe not.

(From 2003)

   61. "She's ready for her close-up now": A paraphrasing of
Gloria Swanson's most famous line in "Sunset Boulevard" (see note #35):
"I'm ready for my close-up now, Mr. DeMille." (CN)

(From 2004)

   62. Judge Sternwood: The character who hires Philip Marlowe in "The
Big Sleep" is named General Sternwood (CN).

   63. Darryl Lodwick: An overzealous prosecutor in "Anatomy of A
Murder" is named Mitchell Lodwick.

(From 2005)

   64. Mr. Racine (Leo's Lawyer): A reference to Lawrence Kasdan's "Body
Heat" in which William Hurt plays a seedy lawyer in a movie inspired by
"Double Indemnity" (See note #46) (CN). (Also, Racine -in TP- is played by
Van Dyke Parks, the avante-garde composer-arranger who worked with
Beach Boy Brian Wilson (DGP))

(From 2006)

   65. "Getting To Know You": Rodgers and Hammerstein, from "The King
And I"

(From 2007)

   66. "Rockin' Back Inside My Heart"/"The World Spins": See note # 19.

   67. The White Horse: Death, or Heroin, for sure, but probably not Troy,
Laura Palmer's pony. According to the secret diary, Troy was brown or reddish-
brown.

(From 2008)

   68. "Surrey With The Fringe On Top": More Rodgers and Hammerstein,
this time from "Oklahoma!"

(From 2009)

   69. "Leland, the time has come for you to seek the path.": The "clear
light" is constantly referred to as the first step in the ascension to a life-
after-death, and is common to many religions. However, the "void and
cloudless sky" seems to be from the Tibetan Book Of The Dead.

   70. "There's more in Heaven and Earth than are dreamt of in
our philosphy": Hamlet (ac I:sc V, lines 166-167) in response to the
discovery of his father's ghost. In this case, Cooper might not be the Hamlet,
but Truman is definitely the bewildered Horatio.

(From 2010)

   71. "Waldorf Salad": This may be stretching a bit, but I honestly
believe this is a reference (as before; see note #16) to Fawlty Towers,
which based a whole episode on Basil not knowing what this was.

   72. Mountie King: King was the name of Sergeant Preston's dog.

   73. The White Lodge: I am grateful to Jerry Boyajian
for the explanation of the White Lodge. Apparently, in "The Devil's Guard"
(a.k.a. "Ramsden") (by Talbot Mundy?), the White Lodge is a secret order that
tries to create good, of which the Dalai Lama is a member. (I am also grateful
to Janet M. Swisher for printing this fact in "Twin Peaks Frequently Answered
Questions").

(From 2011)

   74. The Black Lodge/"The Dweller On The Threshold": When I first saw
this episode, I immediately thought of the "Mirror, Mirror" episode of Star
Trek. In keeping with the theory that TP=every bit of pop culture ever made
(see note #60), and given Cooper's pure goodness, an "evil Cooper" sequence
was inevitable.

   75. Roger Hardy at the RR: The only purpose of this scene is, of course,
a MOD SQUAD REUNION!!! (sort of; apparently Michael Cole wasn't available
for Mountie King or some other such role). Not a true reference, but I wanted
to mention it.

   76. James and Evelyn Marsh: I don't know what other people on the
network thought of this arc (most probably hated it), but I liked it, in a
strange way. To my mind, the sequence resembled nothing so much as a
James Dean movie, thus bringing James' character to its logical fruition. The
dialogue in these scenes ("It's not the bike, it's just where it can take me...
Sometimes I just go down the highway blind"-Loved it! pure camp.) seemed
stilted and contrived on purpose. The existentially-depressed-James may
have gotten a little annoying, but I thought it wasn't nearly as bad as some
people did.

   77. "Now is the winter of our discontent...": The first lines from
Shakespeare's Richard III, which certainly aptly describes Ben's situation.

(From 2012)

   78. Nicky-as-the-devil: (see note #60) In this case, "The Omen."

79."O, she doth teach the torches to burn bright! It seems she..." Romeo
and Juliet, Ac I: Sc V, lines 46-49.

(From 2013)

   80. The Mark: Major Briggs' tattoo resembles (as many have pointed
out) a variation on the radiation symbol.

   81. Spaceships and Owls: See note #40.

   82. "The Dorritt Home For Boys": The Dickensian nature of the "Little
Nicky" plot (Orphans, lost lineage, the revelation of hidden origins,
misfortune and serendipity in general) naturally calls for a suitably
Dickensian name for the orphanage.

   83. Ben's Civil War fantasy: Dr. Jacoby's explanation of Ben's delusion
(re-enacting a failure to fight against his own inadeqacies) seems plausible,
but why the Civil War? Ben had never before shown any sign of being a Civil
War buff (as well, doesn't it seem especially strange that the owner of the
*Great Northern* would identify with the South? -just kidding). However,
one could see how Ben -a cocky, no-holds-barred maverick- could see some
of himself in the Confederates (although not neccesarily Robert E. Lee). Of
other interest is that immediately after Ben's fantasy ends, he is "rescued"
by John Justice Wheeler -a possible reference to a Confederate cavalry
general named Joseph Wheeler. As well, Frost and Lynch's interest in the
Civil War may have been piqued by the PBS series (DGP). Another probable TP
connection is the war between Ben (the South) and Jean Renault (the North), who
has taken over OEJs. (RH)

(From 2014)

   84. "Wine comes in at the mouth": Yeats, as Pete notes. Although
Pete uses it because it's the only toast he knows (other than a limerick), the
connection with Yeats suggests Pete's possible spiritual (indeed, mystical)
nature, which has only rarely been touched upon.

   85. The Black Pawn (No.1): The chess references brought to my mind
not Alice In Wonderland or somesuch, but The Avengers, both for the
chessboard opening and an episode in which people were dispatched in ways
that were made to resemble board games, e.g. a man killed by snakebite
after climbing a ladder- Snakes and Ladders. Actually, the giant Pawn is a
better example of this.

(From 2015)

    86. The bus drivers listening to opera: A possible Ralph Kramden
reference? I thought that this episode of TP (directed by Diane Keaton) had
some bad lapses in TP's sensibility. There were times (the above scene and
the deputies leaving the Marshes in strict formation) where Keaton did stuff
purely for style. In the other episodes, the "strange" or stylized elements in
scenes (the dwarf, the spotlights, BOB, the Giant) were "explained", not just
there for show. Does anybody else agree?

   87. The wooden wind instrument that We is always playing and "wacking"
folks with is reminiscent of Kung Fu -- David Carradine (Caine) did similar
things with his flute and his other personal articles in that series, no?
(LDZ)

   88. Springfield: Earle's first target (to form the "C" -for "Cooper" or
"Caroline") is Homer Simpson's hometown.

(From 2016)

   89. John Justice Wheeler: See note #83. Also, there is a John Wheeler
who was a proponent of the multiple universes interpretation of Quantum Theory.

   90. "See the mountains kiss high heaven", etc.: Shelley, from "Love's
Philosophy", Verse II. What makes me wonder is that the poem doesn't seem
like something Coop would chose. Maybe he is more romantic than I thought,
although my impression from both the show and the Autobiography is that
Coop is not someone as interested in poetry (after all, he got a C from April)
as he is in arcana and mysteries.

(From 2017)

   91. Margaret's Mark: The tattoo on the Log Lady is, IMHO, the Twin Peaks.

   92. Dr. Craig: A possible nudge at St. Elsewhere?

   93. Miss Twin Peaks: "On the set of the pilot, the makeup artist
always called me Miss Twin Peaks. 'C'mere, Miss Twin Peaks!'": Sherilyn Fenn
from "Babes In The Woods" (the "Women Of Twin Peaks" article in Rolling
Stone, October 4, 1990). Of course, Audrey ends up being the most reluctant
to enter the contest.

(From 2018)

     94. Spelunking: In the obligatory TP sketch during the Kyle
MachLachlan episode of Saturday Night Live, Coop described to Truman a dream in
which a hairless mouse sang a songs about caves, and Coop said "Harry, tonight
we're going to do a little spelunking." This CAN'T be a coincidence!

(From 2019)

   95. The Black Pawn (No. 2) See note # 85.

(From 2020)

   96. The Dugpas: The dugpas were mentioned in "The Devil's Guard (aka
Ramsden)" Briefly, there was a sect of Tibetan buddhism called Dugpas that
were black magicians. Sexual excesses and murder were two characteristics of
their practise. Their chief opponents were the sect headed by the Dalai Lama.

   97. "When Jupiter and Saturn meet, they will receive you": Most people
now take this to be an astronomical/astrological reference, as Cooper later
deduces.

   98. "When Jupiter and Saturn meet, Oh what a crop of mummy wheat":
Yeats, who was _very_ interested in the occult, mythology, and good and
evil. In the Roman system of gods, Jupiter (good), as shown before, was the
son of Saturn (evil), and symbolizes the duel between Leland and Bob, as
well as Cooper and BOB. another thing to note is that Yeats' "gyres" (the two
spirals representing the two natures of mankind and nature) resemble twin peaks.
Yeats' take on mythology informs much of the last episode, and may explain the
cyclical nature of life in Twin Peaks.

   99. Miss Twin Peaks/The Taking Of The Queen: As a netter mentioned
(please write with your name so you can be credited properly!) the floor at
the roadhouse in the contest scenes resmbles a chess- or checker-board.

   100. Glastonberry Grove: The coincidental name shared with the
legendary burial place of King Arthur (sort of: It's really Glastonbury) has
had many run off in search of possible Fisher-King connections. I wonder...
Most have proven a little tenuous, although some connections have been
made: Andy seems to be set up as a Parsifal archetype (DGP). A good analogy
is WE::King Arthur, Caroline/Annie::Guinivere, Coop::SIr Lancelot (RH)
My own personal knowledge of Arthurian legend only goes as far as the Howard
Pyle illustrated children's books and "Monty Python and the Holy Grail", but I
_do_ like the idea of the cup-of-coffee-as-holy grail. The idea of "a child
without a father" suggests to me Donna, or Lucy's baby, or even Little Nicky
(he has to serve *some* purpose!). If anyone has more to add, please enter
it.(DGP)

   101. The circle of sycamore trees: In the Tibetan book Of The Dead,
according to Joseph Campbell, sycamore trees are connected with the Egyptian
(Heliopolitan?) goddess Nut. As well, the twelve-trees/twelve-candles (twelve
rooms?) connection is well noted. The circle was a sacred symbol in the
religion of the druids (see note #17).

   102. The bank vault and Dell: See note #53.

   103. Chained Audrey: Another Avengers reference? (See note #85) (It
seems to me that Emma Peel ended up shackled to objects quite a bit.)

   104. Venus De Milo: Noth the planet/goddess (see note #27) and also
"the gal with no arms. The name was Milo": GC in 2018.

   105. "Doppelganger": It seemed to me to be a squaredance call, sort of
like "change partners." "Doppelgaenger" has been translated from the German
"Doppel" -Double-"Gaenger"-Goer. This has been interpreted as meaning both
a shape-changer or a true double - a negative image of oneself that will
destroy its counterpart - a la antimatter. This certainly agrees with the
"imperfect courage" that Hawk mentioned. However, I see the doppelgangers as
being both -- the Caroline-Annie-Shadow-Laura wraith could have all been Windom
Earle, but the Shadow-Cooper (Doppelcooper?) was definitely a negative image of
Cooper. Personally, I still think that this was the inevitable
reference/homage/parody of "Mirror, Mirror" (See notes # 60 & #74).(DGP) One
definition of doppelgaenger (and the earliest on record) is "one who has seen
himself". Such an experience was taken as an ill omen, namely one of impending
death.(RH)

   106. On the subject of classical allegories, how come
noone (except the Toronto Globe and Mail) has mentioned "Faust"? Dale gave up
his soul, right? For Annie, right? Sounds like a bargain with Mephistopheles
to me. My personal knowledge of Faust gave me the impression that Faust made his
deal with the devil for the love a woman. (DGP) However, BM disagrees, although
she admits that Windom Earle was trying to play Mephistopheles, and was punished
gravely for his overstepping of bounds.

   107. "How's Annie?": The ending was, of course, guessed to a
reasonable degree, by netter Daniel Mittleman, who should probably get
some kind of award.

Inane Sub-Plots platt@ccu.umanitoba.ca 1991-07-30 15:50
On the numerous postings concerning inane subplots:
I would have to agree with Barb Miller on Norma's mother (the idea of the
devouring mother versus the nourishing daughter). Another way of interpreting
this is that Vivian (Norma's mother) represents a cerebral, critical treatment
of food, while Nadine represents an emotional, natural treatment of food.
Vivian's view of food has no room for "local color", which is Norma's whole life.
The childless Norma serves as surrogate mother not only to Shelly but to whoever
walks into the RR. Another interpretation of this is that Vivian represents all
media, who at first nurtured and encouraged Norma (representing TP as a show),
only to cut her (TP) down with criticism. A strange theory, I'll admit, but
remember this: the conclusion of the Vivian/Norma sub-plot coincided with the
conclusion of the WKLP storyline, and the inevitable disappointment expressed by
the critics.

The Nadine sub-plot was, as said before, tragic and poignant beneath the
humour. Nadine is the most Lynchian of all the characters on TP, because you
never knew whether to laugh or cry. I thought the comic relief segments were a
perfect counterpoint to the sad story of Ed and Norma, forced to live for twenty
years with "weeks full of Mondays". Anyone who can't feel just a bit of pain at
the sight of Nadine, reverted back to her original state, and the repurcussions
for Ed and Norma's happiness, is way too cynical.

Finally, I found the JJ Wheeler sub-plot to be integral to the story of
Audrey Horne as a whole. Think of it: a bored rich girl living in the shadow of
Laura Palmer (moreso than Donna), cursed with a sleazebag dad, she seeks any
escape from the town. When it finally comes in the form of Cooper, a handsome,
virtuous stranger (the antithesis of her father), he rejects her out of fear of
hurting her (his problem is he's RperfectS). Her next "romance" is with Bobby, a
sleazy go-getter (a wanna-be version of her father) who she justly rejects,
ending up with John Justice Wheeler. Wheeler represents a change in Audrey:
while he is still an outsider, he has ties to her past and is passionate towards
the environment. At the same time, Audrey is able to help with her father's
rebirth as a "good person". The environmental theme allows Audrey to love her
home, and reject escape. This is shown by her growing friendship with Pete,
whose link to the land is totally natural. Finally, when Audrey is able to break
free of all this emotional baggage and make a statement of her own, she is blown
to bits at the tender age of 18. End of story.

...Therefore, I think JJ Wheeler was absolutely neccessary to the tragic tale
of Audrey Horne.

(BTW, does anybody else agree with me that Audrey's probable death bookends the
series with that of Laura Palmer's? It makes me think that TP is really, finally
<sniff> over).

Not to belittle Northern Exposure, for it is a fine show, worth talking

fate of BOB is unresolved, there will always be Twin Peaks talk.

Badalamenti also did the music for the film _Parents_, starring Randy Quaid
et alia. The film was above average (with one _really_ scary dream

Absolutely True! I watched the final episode with a girl I had
recently broken up with, (kind of a reunion?). We figured we would
talk afterwards.

We sat for a while in stunned silence. We talked alittle, but soon
said our good nights. We each agreed later that we were shaken beyond
words.

I was strongly depressed all week. I was mildly depressed for several.

This may make you feel better, but I think it allows you to deny the
unsettling idea that the end of TP reminds us of: YOU TOO can
die, or loose it all, even your soul. Even if you're one of the
good guys. Being good, or nice, or even "right" gives you no
protection at all in and of itself. If you screw up, and the
stakes are high enough, you may not get a second shot.

Please, no flames about whether this idea is true or not,
("tomorrow's always another day..." and all that) the
point is, there's not a man or woman on the planet who is not
afraid that it's true. There's not a man or woman who doesn't
at least sometimes fear that he or she hasn't ALREADY blown it.

Even Agent Coop can blow it. And he may not get another chance.

The plan as proposed is still a violation of copyright laws. It doesn't
matter whether or not any profit is made from the copying of tapes.

"Copyright" is exactly that -- *the right to copy*. The copyright holder
is given the right to control the duplication and distribution of his
property.

Even if you refrained from charging money for making copies, the fact
is that the owner of the work isn't making any money from the duplication
of that work, either.

FCC regulations state that it is permissable for a recording to be made
of the broadcast signal, as long as the recording is made for private use
only. That regulation only holds for recording an off-air (or off-cable)
broadcast, and does not grant permission to make duplicate copies of
the recording.

There seems to be a lot of confusion about the status of the ^TP^ movie
so I gave Lynch/Frost Productions a call today. The lady I spoke to said:

1) The movie is on. It is in pre-production, but she didn't know the
    start date of filming.
2) Kyle will be in it.

The lady tried to assure me about #2, but she sounded just a little bit unsure.
Maybe he's just holding out for money? *8^)

Mine would have to be the sequence after Cooper got shot. The waiter not
seemingly noticing that a man has been shot. Just business as usual. This had
me on the floor laughing. And then the Giant gives Coop 3 clues. I also liked
Cooper telling Diane what he'd like to do with his life, especially "make love
to a beautiful woman whom I have genuine affection for." And also talking
about keeping fear out of his mind. This seems to forsee the rest of the
season. He got his wish for love and found Annie. He *seemed* to have lost
the battle with fear at the end. I don't know, though. It *was* a
cliffhanger. He did do it to save Annie. I imagine he may be inside
resisting. Major Briggs was given the message by Sarah Palmer and Dr. Jacoby.
At first, he may think that all is alright when he finds that Cooper survived
his Black Lodge journey. But eventually, he is bound to know that something is
amiss. I hope. No one seemed to suspect Leland's insanity, but then they
thought his daughter's death drove him mad.

I have the beast in question. The soundtrack is maybe only half
Badalamenti stuff (maybe less). There's a bunch of other stuff on there,
including some lame speed metal band, but on the positive side including
"Wicked Game" by Chris Isaac. This was way before the song became a hit,
and I liked it when I heard it on here. The Badalamenti stuff is pretty
cool. Doesn't really compare to the three things you mentioned above, but
not bad. There's one song that sounds a little Peaksish, complete with
finger-snapping. Most of the A. B. stuff on the album is various versions
of an okay song called "Dark Spanish Sky" or something. Anyway, I guess
I recommend it, but you'll be disappointed if you're expecting the quality
of the three works you mentioned.

Help, please! cmcghee@eagle.wesleyan.edu 1991-08-01 11:50
Thanks for everyone's reply about the Twin Peaks video library.
Since it seems to be illegal, I was wondering about several things.

Would anyone be willing to join me in writing ABC and asking them
to rerun the whole two seasons?

Would that help?

How about writing to Lynch/Frost productions and asking them if they
would consider releasing the series on tape?

How about asking permission from them (L/F) or Aaron Spelling Prod-
uctions to tape episodes for entertainment purposes only? I worked in
the permissions department at a publishing firm once, and usually
they were quite generous with copyrights, if asked.

How does one FTP to the audrey.sait.edu.au address I keep hearing
about?

Does anyone know anything about other James appearances, in movies
or TV? I happened to like his character and the Evelyn Marsh
subplot, as well as most of the other subplots people mention,
except the Little Nicky one.

I really would like to show my boyfriend early TP stuff, since he
never saw any episodes until February of this year. So I would
love if someone could post the addresses for ABC and Lynch/Frost
productions here, and help me out by writing to them too. Thanks
a lot again!

Unfortunately, in this case the New Zealand "powers that be" are
correct. Twin Peaks did die with Leland Palmer.

At the end of the episode, his fiancee's cousin comes by to pick them up

Regular readers of this news group may know that Twin Peaks has been
canned in New Zealand a couple of episodes after the death of Leland Palmer in
fact the "final" scene for us was when The Major and Cooper are out camping in
the woods and Cooper walks away from the campfire to take a piss.......
Talk about keeping you hanging.

By the way my favourite scenes have to be the one where Leland throws himself
on the coffin of Laura and the goes up and down up and down etc..Also who could
forget Audrey and the cherry stalk? That must rate as one of the sexiest things
I have seen on TV for some time. What about Leo bleeding on the floor while
watching someone on his TV set bleeding on the floor..?
So many great scenes its hard to list them all.

RE: The of Twin Peaks in NZ and more... nick@tornado.welly.gen.nz (Nick Borrell) 1991-08-02 00:37
Hey, Peakie Dudes...

I see someone has already written to the a.t.tp to tell you that
the station playing TP has decided to drop it because of "poor
ratings". :-{

TP has (had) a larger following here than you might suspect. At
Wellington University a large group of devout Lynch followers
have viewed every accessible movie, or publication, ever made by,
or associated, with Mark Frost or David Lych. The Monty Python
Club, on campus, have assumed responsibility for debating TP
related matters. My last holiday job was made especially
enjoyable, because a majority of us followed each episode
religously.
When the pilot was shown here, one the city's pubs had a special
TP evening and showed the pilot on big screen TV. It was just
after the second episode that TV3 announced that TP's ratings had
dropped to a dismal 7% of the viewing audience (With a total
population of about 3.4 mil, possibly upto 238,000 people were
watching). 8/2/91 - I see the figure 94000 being bounced around
now.

TV ratings seem to be an american disease, that only really
recently have been adopted here. With the advent of our THIRD
national TV station (30% owned by NBC) the networks (as they like
to call themselves) compete very aggresively for audience
attention. Unfortunately for TV3, because it has the weakest
signal coverage (cable is only just arriving! (Yeah, yeah. I know
it sounds third world.)). Its programmes have to be
exceptionally good. Even more unfortunate for TV3, is the sad
fact that their programmers just don't seem to be able to buy
and/or air the programmes we Kiwis want to see (I think they
might all be NBC executives who would otherwise have been sent
to Siberia). And when they do get the right progs, like TP, they
screw it up by canning them early. Rather self-destructive, I
think.

Mais, c'est la gare.

Anyhow, I honestly didn't write just to moan at everyone and
everything, I promised my little sister that I'd mention
something on the newsgroup for her.

The Doors movie with Kyle came out here not so long ago, I loved
it so much (the music I mean) that I went started to collect some
of their albums. Now, I play their greatest hits every time the
computer goes on, (viz: all the time), and it wasn't long before
I found myseld thinking of TP everytime I heard songs like: The
End and Riders on the Storm (essentially all the tracks). At
first, I thought that I was just associating Kyle with Ray
Mazerick. BUT, one day I mentioned this fact to my little
sister, and she said that she also thought of TP everytime she
heard The Doors' songs. The interesting thing is: She hasn't
seen the movie, so she hasn't had the opportunity to
subconciouslessly connect Kyle and Ray (oohhh, errr...sounds a
bit rude!) :-)

Wow man, freaky!

I think it may be the powerful imagery that they both have in
common. I may be wrong.

My sister wanted to draw your (and my) attention to their common
"use of sight and sound [that] revert us to a part of the mind
(possibly memory, esp. ex-tokers!) that we feel we would rather
be. This is some sort of "dream land" we would find ideal to get
away to..."

She maybe wrong, too.

But, I would especially like to see someone else's opinion about
this.

While I'm here...

When TV3 was showing TP they aired the second season straight
after the first. So down here, at least, noticed very distinct
differences in the characters, especially in Cooper, and
differences in direction/production, in at least the first few
episodes. Anyone with all the episodes on tape notice that?

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

Anyone, anywhere...

-Please, don't be shy about replying-, it doesn't cost anymore
to reply to NZ than it does to the US :-)

Most scenes were propably filmed in a studio, modelled after the Mar-T.
There's no way they could have gotten all the cameras and stuff in
there without tearing down the walls. Kinda small place, and a bit
more run-down than the RR we saw in TP. They had a "We support the
timber industry" sign in the window, but I went in anyway... Fairly
good CP (cherry pie).

Also, I've seen several posts here from other 'pilgrims' that the
train-car Laura got murdered in is next to the road in Snoqualmie,
covered with a blue tarp. Not so, you'll find the real one if you
follow the railroad-tracks into the woods 300ft or so. Spooky, if

Tsk, tsk, tsk. Would you have been happy with this answer had the
same thing happened here in the states? Bad Twin Peaks (I think
the 2nd season had some wonderful moments) is much better than
no Twin Peaks.

Obligatory Twin Peaks Theory: I was ruminating the other day while
watching the tomatoes grow and wondered if perhaps Coop had been
tainted all along - we just finally got to see it. Laura was quite
adept at presenting a "good image" and Coop's autobiography presents
some truly bizarre events. Consider the dichotomy of the diaries
(Coop on tape, Laura on paper). Both had semi-psychic mothers.
Both had eccentric fathers. Coop seemed to enjoy his portrayal
of a homosexual swinger and Laura her One Eyed Jack's experience (o.k. -
I'm stretching, here). Both were over-achievers. Both talk about
asparagus in their diaries (any mythical references to asparagus?).
Etc., etc., etc.

He is the main character from a British TV comedy called, unsuprisingly,
Blackadder (I -> IV). This series as well had a really sad ending for
the fourth and last series, set in WWI. The series itself traced the
fortunes of the Blackadder family through history, and was very good.

"Is this cunning plan a cunning as a fox who has just been elected Regis

"Yes" - Baldrick

Twin Peaks a closed-ended series? jrk@sys.uea.ac.uk (Richard Kennaway) 1991-08-02 09:50
Contrary to the opinions that have been expressed here, I have a
persistent but vague memory of reading somewhere, before Twin Peaks even
began in the UK, that it was originally conceived not as something
open-ended, of indefinite length, but as being exactly three series long,
with a proper beginning and end (and a large number of middles :-));
hence the unsatisfactory end to the second series when the funding was
yanked, which is OK as a cliffhanger, but makes no sense on its own.
Can anyone confirm or refute this?

TP Movie News vnozick@eagle.wesleyan.edu 1991-08-02 11:39
According to Marilyn Beck: (culled from The Orange County Register)

Good news for "Twin Peaks" fans. The much discussed big-screen version
of David Lynch's cult hit TV series is on again.
You may recall that plans to bring "Peaks" into theaters hit a snag
last month when it appeared star Kyle MacLachlan (who plays FBI agent Dale
Cooper) <-- as if we didn't know! // was opting against taking part in the
project. Now inside word is that MacLachlan may be "in" after all.
Discussions between his reps and Lynch/Frost Productions are under way.
Meanwhile, we understand Lynch has a completed script ready to go for
the film, and he intends to go through with a "Peaks" picture with Kyle or
without. As yet, no start date has been set for the production Lynch initially
hoped to begin late this month.

-TP without Kyle????? Blasphemy!
-I agree with whoever said that Kyle is holding out for money. But I ask, what
would Kyle do without David Lynch?
-Anyone heard anything about the script?
-Think it might still get started this month? When is a tentative release
 date?

Save the Pine Weasel t-shirts Mike.Carvalho@COMM.umass.edu 1991-08-02 12:59
"Fellas, coincidence and fate [and high-quality Twin Peaks t-shirts] figure
largely in our lives." - Agent Cooper to Truman, Hawk, Andy and YOU!

How can you look into the eyes of an innocent, cute little pine weasel and
not feel compassion towards him? Now you can share your feelings with the
world with a "SAVE THE PINE WEASEL" T-shirt.

The shirts are white, 100% cotton Haynes beefy-t's. Professionally
screened on the front is a pocket-sized image of the symbol from Owl Cave
which doubled as several attractive tattoos. The highlight of the back
is a real live Pine Weasel, bigger than life and as cute as ever.
Boldly emblazoned above this little critter are the words 'SAVE THE PINE
WEASEL' so there can be no doubt about the meaning of this shirt.
Underneath our fine, furry friend is a suitable quote from the speech
Audrey Horne made at the Miss Twin Peaks Pageant:

"There is only one way to save a forest, an idea, or anything of value
and that is by refusing to stand by and watch it die. There is a law
of nature more fundamental to life than the laws of man. And when
something you care about is in danger, you must fight to save it or
lose it forever." - Audrey Horne

This wisdom can equally be applied to the hazards of network television
scheduling as well as to the pine weasel.

We're printing these shirts not as a money-making venture but as a labour of
love. Like many things which are inspired by Twin Peaks, these shirts are
meant to be shared. (Besides, if enough people aren't interested they'll
cost too much to make!!! :-) ) Our cost right now is $10 per shirt, plus
whatever the post office charges to mail a t-shirt. If you are interested
in getting one or more of these shirts, you can contact us either through
e-mail: Mike.Carvalho@COMM.UMass.edu or ODonnell_J@Apollo.com
or snail-mail: Mike Carvalho
               21B Old Amherst Road
               Belchertown, MA 01007

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Peace.

P.S. I cannot emphasize enough that we are not making money by printing these

I think her name is Janine Turner. If you like Northern Exposure,
you might get a kick out of the Quantum Leap episode "Catch a Falling Star"
which features not only Janine, but John Cullom(Holling, the owner of the bar)
as well. As to Turner, she's been in a few things ranging from soap operas to
some small feature roles. Also, she was on the cover of last weeks
Entertainment Weekly magazine.

think of it? For those who didn't see it, it was about a college student
(Boyle) who was having trouble dealing with her incestuous relationship
with her father. I am curious to know if this is going to become a
series. Anyone know? Thanks for your time... :)

Don't Let This Net Die, Folks. as215@cleveland.Freenet.Edu (Alexander Aingworth) 1991-08-05 01:06
I only began reading alt.tv.twin.peaks around the end of _Twin
Peaks_'s television career. Upon the television finale, there was an
obscene swell of message traffic, in which people discussed everything
from the inanity of Donna Hayward's parentage to the all too fascinating
journey into The Black Lodge. A significant portion of the message
traffic was intelligent and quite compelling. Where has all of that
energy gone, folks?

Some idiots have suggested that alt.tv.twin.peaks meet its
death, now that _Twin Peaks_ is no longer on the air. That is the most
asinine thing I have seen on a.t.t.p. Why must this message net die?
This place has always been an exchange of ideas and feelings. Despite
the end of a television show, ideas and feelings live on forever, and
can provide wonderful conversation for quite some time to come. Plus,
_Twin Peaks_ may very well continue to be produced.

I simply suggest that all who have watched and enjoyed or hated
_Twin Peaks_ think back to the show and remember what had before
inspired you to post and respond. I do not want to see this message net
go.

D.B.Cooper parachuted from a 727 via the under-tail door over
Washington state in the early seventies with a large sum after
a robbery. He was never found, although someone claiming to be
him was interviewed about 10 years later. This person had
severe injuries to his legs and genitals, the claim being that
he had landed astride a dead tree. This latter part is probably
a hoax.

Sorry folks, I can't resist...Looks like we're back to the Fisher King
again. Injuries to the legs and genitals--that's exactly what was
wrong with him. Of course, he was injured by a weapon (either a sword
that broke, or else the lance that was kept with the Grail, this lance
supposedly being that which was used to pierce Jesus' side when he was
on the cross), and this guy was injured by a dead tree. But then
again, if it's Nature who is a player in this story, as it seems to be
in Twin Peaks, I could see a dead tree being used as a very
appropriate weapon. Alternatively, since the Fisher King supposedly
ruled over a waste land, his modern counterpart would most likely
land, if not in a desert, then in a dead tree.

Lest you all think I'm weirder than I really am, I know I'm talking
about apples and oranges here--the story about landing in the dead
tree was made up (or related truthfully, you never know) by the D. B.
Cooper character, not by the Twin Peaks writers. But it's interesting
how these story elements show up all over the place. (Also, I'm
probably more sensitive to those elements than usual, since all the
Fisher King discussion has caused me to do some more reading on the
Grail legend.) And no, I don't really think we could strengthen the
tie between Dale Cooper and D. B. Cooper based on this allusion.

The "lame" speedmetal band is in fact Powermad, and their song
Slaughterhouse is used to great effect in the film (for example, the
scene with Sailor & Lula driving through the desert, listening to the
radio).

I have been also reading the net and I noticed that the traffic was

dead. Not only are there rumors that TP will be produced elsewere
but there are people and groups that have the complete show (every
episode ) on tape. There are other net.groups that center thier
disscussions around a defunk TV show/Movie. My brother-in-law has
all the episodes and our group of 8 are planning to get together and
have many Peaks Parties were we plan on watching several episodes
back to back. I think that this group would serve a purpose to those
other groups who also plan on doing the same thing, a place to
discuss things that we may have missed during the regular seasons.

Where were the RR Diner Interiors shot? jkragh@Data-IO.COM (Jim Kragh) 1991-08-08 09:50
The RR Diner interiors for the second season were shot at the Two-Rivers
Lounge in Carnation, Washington. Just up the road from the Colonial Inn.
The interior was completely remodeled for the filming, so the interior now
looks nothing like the RR Diner. The view thru the windows during the RR
Diner scenes is what gave away the secret. If you are very observent, you
can see the Carnation Barber Shop and the CEDAR LOG tavern thru the front
windows of the RR. These are directly across the street from the Two Rivers,
and the view matches perfectly from inside with the shots from TP. The other
thing is that the doors and service window inside the Two-Rivers matches the
placement in the RR. Since the filming, the interior of the Two-Rivers has
been divided in two sections (lounge and restaurant), and the full-length
counter has been removed, the floor carpeted, the chairs replaced, etc...
Haven't tried the Cherry Pie there, but the Clam Chowder was "Damn Fine".

SK's "Golden Years" gets strange? SASTPH@vm.sas.com (Tim Hunter) 1991-08-09 05:29
Well, I guess Big Steve and his "Golden Years" colleagues have been noticing
that nobody's watching the show. Last night's episode surely cranked up the
strangeness level, didn't it? Our hero's eyes turn green and the sun rises
again! He sets foot on ground only to cause an earthquake! I would say that
this kind of plotting would go head-to-head with anything Messrs. Lynch and
Frost ever came up with for "Twin Peaks."

Now the question is, will the producers wimp out? Everytime I see a little
evidence that somebody in TV-land is bold enough to go for real fantasy, I
tune in to the next episode and they tell me it was all a dream or something.
Remember how promising TP was, along about episode three, only to have it
degrade into cheap soap-opera a few weeks later?

Well, I guess I'll HAVE to tune in next Thursday and see whether King, et. al.,
have the stomach for it.

Couldn`t agree with you more. I for one am sorry to see the plot go from nice
little government conspiracy versus average guy drama to a full blown S-F
epic. I was enjoying the little bit of S-F that was thrown in to complicate
the relationships of Harlan, Gina, and Terry.

On the other hand, I sure was thrown for a loop when the sun *reversed*
itself. Remember they were driving *west* to Chicago and he (the truck
driver) sees the sun *rise* in front of him.

I just hope "Golden Years" ends this summer without any cliffhangers.

Re: SK's "Golden Years" gets strange? SML108@psuvm.psu.edu (Scott the Great) 1991-08-09 09:28
On the subject of Golden Years finally getting interesting...

You know, I had been betting from about episode 4 that the show was SO
boring and so slow and SO predictable that the guy just HAD to exhibit
superpowers for a Firestarter like finale... From the previews to next
week, it looks like I'm right...

I have to admit that the clock running backwards behind our hero as he
exhibited his tremendous powers was actually a nice touch... I guess you
have to have a Stephen King cameo for anything interesting to happen...

It's a pity, I think they have a very nice 3 hour movie hiding in the middle
of Golden Years. It's too bad they didn't make it that way... Unlike Twin
Peaks, the producers just don't seem to know how to use all the time that
was given to them...

I was just getting ready to post when I saw this note. After 3 hour long
shows of absolutely nothing happening, I won't be tuning in next week to
see the same thing happen, AGAIN!

This show is dragging BUTT! We get 5-10 second seens watching the characters
doing nothing. It seems to me that every episode shows:

Gina whining about Harl getting younger and not wanting to run anymore.

Terry saying things repeatedly like: 'if they catch us we'll just end up
   in body bags' or something
equally stupid.

The SHOP guy, what's his name? acting tough, throwing things and smoking
  his cigarettes.

  And on and on...

I was really looking forward to a good series and it's just dwindled into
garbage. This is all just IMHO but I'm seriously disappointed in King's
work here. Yes, it was quite suspenseful to start with, and the suspense is
still there but they simply could have crammed the last 3 show into one
and we would've gotten the same effect. Why do they have to drag it out so?

More on THE MOVIE... bdowning@unixland.natick.ma.us (Bill Downing) 1991-08-10 12:01
From the Boston GLOB, a few days ago, an article appeared in the
"entertainment gossip" section (or whatever the editors officially
call it) stating that the movie has resumed shooting and that Kyle
M. has agreed to five days of shooting max. The article implied
(without any "facts" to back it up) that Lynch would use a different
actor to play Cooper for the remainder of the shooting schedule.

What I don't understand is, since this is allegedly a prequel of
events leading to LP's death, how much could Cooper be involved
since he didn't appear on the scene until after her death?

But, considering Lynch's penchant for parallel universes, dream states
and other paranormal phenomena, I suppose that anything is
possible:-).

Well, I'm not going to try to confer any value whatsoever on Audrey's
fling or Norma's mom the food critic, but I'm going to go out on a bit
of a limb and try to justify Nadine's entire storyline for the second
season. First of all, at least at first it was a VERY "Lynchian" plotline,
in that it dealt with something completely surreal running into the everyday
world. It's just as much of a collision between reality and fantasy as, say,
the fish in the percolator.

Also, have you ever seen "Peggy Sue Got Married"? Nadine's story seemed to me
to be a perfect parody of that whole "if I had a second chance" kind of cliche.
She gets to regress to the time before her life got messed up, and what does
she do to make it better? She jumps the first guy who she thinks has cute
buns. And this seems to be the only thing on her mind. She's all set up for
another heartbreak, where Mike would destroy her life just like Ed did...
but she gets sandbagged instead.

Truth be told I was still disappointed by the abrupt ending to the story. I
would have liked to have them play }i{_it with a little more emotional
depth -- having Doctor Jacoby and Ed continue to try to straighten out her life
(as they'd hinted at a few episodes before). Maybe even play it for a bit of
pathos, as Nadine's fantasies crumble around her. But instead they just
decided to get it over with in one short scene. Oh well...

Re: Second Season Episode timeline jblum@umd5.umd.edu (Jon Blum) 1991-08-10 20:16
Interesting, isn't it, that some of those episodes you summarized with
a description of only the last thirty seconds of the show... kinda
makes you wonder if the preceding 45 minutes had any value at all...
(I'm thinking of the "The Major Reappears" episode in particular...
also the "Judge Sternwood arrives" one, considering that de judge only
had a part in one other episode. I can't remember that one too well, but
did ANYTHING important happen in that one?)

favorite scenes larryy@Apple.COM (Larry Yaeger) 1991-08-11 03:35
No comprehensive list or anything, but I thought I'd mention a particular
scene that recurs frequently for me. Though I think Maddie's death is
by far the most powerful scene in the history of television, there's one
image from the aftermath, completely unnecessary to plot development,
yet so perfectly atmospheric, and perhaps a little insightful into the
characters, that it really stuck with me, and I can visualize it at will...

The four strong male characters, Coop, Truman, Albert, and Hawk (I think),
walking in slow motion towards the camera with their longcoats flapping
slowly in the breeze. Their dejection is plain, yet a hint of developing
resolve was suggested to me. It calls up western cowboy hero mythologies,
yet they don't feel at all like heroes at the moment. A chance, both
welcome and not, to reflect on the horror they've just failed to stop.

Anyway, it got to me.

Favorite moments? Let's see....

Maddy's death, combined with the shots of Donna and Bobby upset in the
Roadhouse.

The end of episode 2020, with the ominous still shots of a bunch of TP
locations (a series of shots that I think may have some yet-unrealized
significance,) then BOB appearing in the woods.

5 guys walking near the woods right after the discovery of Maddy's body.

Same shot in next episode, without the guys. Just trees.

Laura screaming in the train car in 2001 or 2002. Nightmarish.

Slow pan over the chessboard in the opening of Diane Keaton's episode.

And of course, all the various shots of wind blowing eerily through trees.

About your pastiche:
Very interesting. You have the characters' dialogue down perfectly,
especially Albert's and Coop's.

The only suggestion I would have is to maybe lose the line with Nadine
telling Mike to look what he's been making love to. It doesn't seem to
fit in with what was really just a humorous subplot.

Turning People on to TP joe@zitt (Joe Zitt) 1991-08-11 23:45
I had a few people over at my home today who hadn't seen TP, or weren't sure
if they had. To give them a quick intro to the show, I pulled my tape of
1002 from the stack and showed them (as they came up, with little planning):
The rocks and bottles
Nadine and the noiseless drape runners
Pete and Catherine and the boots
The Dream

This interested them enough that we may see the whole show some time soon
(I think we have the Mahabharata, The Last Temptation of Christ, Wings of
Desire, and Peter Gabriel's POV on the playstack first).

Interestingly, when BOB came on screen, one of the people remembered that
she >had< seen the Euroversion (she's from Munich). It took a little explaining
to tell her why this scene was being shown out of order, as it were.

It is happening again. It is happening again. It is happening again.

I think it stinks... I have liked the show so far, but think
the earthquake & sun bits are too much.

It certainly wasn't "realistic" before, but "closer to reality"
in a sense.. I can't really explain it, I just feel it's TOO bogus now.

I mean working on regeneration efforts is something really being
done (I doubt with big green eery lights though!).. I remember reading a few
months about some work how some people have regrown tips of their fingers and
such and how scientists are looking into it and in the future they may
be able to make the body regrow something, much as a starfish regrows a
limb..
I realize that and GROWING YOUNGER are totally separate, but they
are closer than causing the sun to come up and an earthquake..

bummer... That one guy is still creepy though.

Speaking of these scenes containing "yet-unrealized significance"...

I've always felt the same way...that is, that there were mysteries
(to be explained later) hidden in, say, the scenes of the hanging
traffic lights, etc.

But something always bothered me about that. Since TP had so many
different directors, I'm now thinking that these seemingly meaningful
scenes were more likely to have been the expression of the style of
the individual directors. In that case, any hidden meaning would have
come solely from the perceiption of the viewer...

Hope not, though...I rather like the idea of yet-unexplained meanings...:-)

Anyone interested in making a chronological quote list? dws@cs.wisc.edu (DaviD W. Sanderson) 1991-08-12 15:06
As the subject line indicates, I wonder if anyone would be interested
in collaborating with me to create a chronological arrangement of the
quotes in the several quote lists which have been posted here. For the
purposes of this list, by "chronological" I mean "the order of airing".
I don't want to get into timeline debates; arranging quotes in
broadcast order (under episode headings) would be fine with me.

In order to bring this off I would need help from others, since I have
no TP tapes and thus no way to pinpoint which quotes go with which
episodes. I would thus be mostly a clearing house for corrections to
an ever-evolving list.

Is anyone willing to help me do this? We could do it by Email if
there isn't enough interest to broadcast the intermediate work on the
net. I expect the initial list would consist of a list of all the
episodes, followed by an unordered list of quotes from the various
quote lists. We'd then go through a number of iterations doing an
insertion sort.

TP archive: Name change etpma@levels.unisa.edu.au 1991-08-12 23:10
This message is to announce the fact that the name of the Twin Peaks
archive site is changing to:

     audrey.levels.unisa.edu.au

sometime on the 18th of August (ie next Sunday). This means that the
archive is unavaliable during this period, but I hope to make the
downtime as short as possible.

It's basically a domain name change to reflect the fact that we're now
the 'University of South Australia', rather than the 'South Australian
Institute of Technology'.

Note that the old address should still work for a while, but it won't
be guaranteed. The IP number (for those of you who don't use DNS) is
staying the same at [130.220.16.88].

Don't give up on the unexplained meanings yet -- from what I gather, a lot
of those transition shots were taken by David Lynch himself on the first
Snoqualmie shoot, and dropped in later. So that @#$% traffic light which

ABSOLUTELY NOTHING! I had a feeling the kid would turn up in the finale

New TP HyperCard stack at ftp site larryy@Apple.COM (Larry Yaeger) 1991-08-13 20:27
Well, this also answers the latest query on where the ftp site is located...

Peter Asenstorfer, our erudite ftp site administrator, has just informed
me that a file I dropped at the ftp site has now been moved to the usual
/pub/twin-peaks area, in a new Hypercard_Stacks subdirectory. This is
on audrey.sait.edu.au, or 130.220.16.88. [Note, Peter will announce next
week, probably, that after Aug. 17 (this Saturday!) the TP archives will
be relocated to audrey.levels.unisa.edu.au. He expects the IP number to
stay the same.]

The new stack is file /pub/twin-peaks/Hypercard_Stacks/TPBSCompanion.sit.Hqx.
This stands for Twin Peaks Bed Side Companion (version 2.0). It is by
Mark F. Lewis, and may be freely distributed so long as it is not for
profit, and neither the stack nor the copyright notice is changed. This
is a great stack, with nicely crossreferenced character relationships, plot
synopses for every episode, some credits, a list of continuity errors, and
other fun stuff. It was obviously a labor of love for Mark, who did this
work purely from his own research, even though I offered to provide him
with suitable materials from a.t.tp and the ftp site.

The stack has been compressed using Stuffit 1.5.1 and then converted to
simple ASCII by BinHex 4.0. Using those two applications in reverse
should recover the stack with no other manipulations required. I believe
you will need HyperCard 2.0 or later to run the stack (and, of course,
a Mac). There is also a README file in the Stuffit archive, that Mark
asked to be distributed with the stack; it is very short, and is a TeachText
document (TeachText is distributed free by Apple).

Enjoy!

There are a few things that would eventually tie in during the time-frame
of the TP episodes so far. Coop investigated Theresa Banks' death who we know
was killed by BOB. Coop's old partner, Windom Earl, had been looking for
the Black Lodge for quite a while.
These events take place before the pilot episode. In a prequel, it would be
quite important to show these things, revealing stuff we don't know as well.

I know what you mean though; how can you show ANY connective plot tissue
between Coop/Earl stuff and Laura Palmer stuff in a prequel. In an ideal
world, where the movie does NOT have to stand alone, but be an integral part
of the serial this would be easy. Lots of serials have seemingly unrelated
plot lines that meet and intertwine later. But most likely the POWERS THAT BE
at Hollywood will make sure that the movie must stand on its own and that it
ISN'T necessary to watch the TV episodes to understand what is going on.

Kyle MacLaughlan on SNL giovin@risky.ecs.umass.edu (Rocky J Giovinazzo) 1991-08-13 22:52
FYI, the Saturday Night Live season premiere hosted by Kyle
MacLaughlan is being re-broadcast on the 17th. For those of you
who haven't seen it, there are references to TP in the monologue and
there is also a TP sketch.

This could be the last time we see Kyle on television (except maybe on
talk shows) until TP goes into syndication.

Some info on the film from today's Hollywood Reporter trowbrid@girtab.usc.edu (Theron Trowbridge) 1991-08-13 23:32
From today's (8/13/91) Hollywood Reporter:

Having acquired international distribution rights to the film version
of David Lynch's "Twin Peaks," the year-old Spelling Films International
is beefing up its sales department with the appointment of Dawn Handler
to the newly created post of vp sales.
[some non-related, silly industry stuff deleted]
"Twin Peaks - Fire, Walk With Me," which SFI picked for international
distribution is the first of David Lynch's three-picture deal with
Cibi 2000, the new production company of the Bouygues Group, headed
by French industrialist Francis Bouygues. With production scheduled
to begin in September, "Twin Peaks" is expected to be one of the
first projects Handler will sell at the October American Film Market.
Handler will also oversee the marketing of SFI' first three films: Mark
Frost's thriller "Storyville," starring James Spader and Jason Robards;
Robert Altman's suspense thriller "The Player"; and the romantic comedy
"Rules of the Game."
[rest of non-related, silly industry stuff article deleted]

There it is. Filming beginning in September.

Strange...that will make it the third time it has been shown. Strange,
considering it wasn't even a very good episode, except for Kyle and
Mike Myers as the Scottish father & son, and the last line of the show
("Hi everybody, I'm K.D. Lang").
