Ummm... Don, I don't want to be picky here, but you did read the start
of said articles? Like, the bit that said "this is a Sun audio file"? It
doesn't translate into English - it's not in a code - it's a 7bit ascii
representation of a 8 bit 8000 Hz digital sample of the said speech. It
won't do anything on a VMS, if you havn't got a Sparcstation or a sun
with audio capability it won't do anything. On those, after you have
uudecoded and uncompressed the file, a brief 'cat cooper.au >
/dev/audio' will result in the dulcet tones of Kyle.
Well, it should do, I haven't transferred it to my Sparc yet so I can't
claim perfection here. (Sorry - _a_ Sparc, I don't actually own one...)
Bit flamey there, but the confusion is understandable.
As for transcribing the episodes - you gotta be joking!!! We are talking
copyright infringement here, in major quantitities.

My favourite film with Harry Dean Stanton featuring is John
Carpenter's "Escape from New York". He played "Brain", ex-bankrobber
and former friend of Kurt Russel's "Snake Plissken", a scientist
making a deadly mistake mixing up left and right. Furthermore, in
"Kelly's Heroes" he played a soldier (at one time wearing underware
on his head and later singing a song about "everybody's kickin' my
dog around") under Telly Savalas' command, this movie also featured
Clint Eastwood and Donald Sutherland ("Negative waves, man!").

How do we know that the person on this bews feed saying he is a TP writer and friend of `Dave' is who he said? And if he gets us an interview with Lynch how do we know it is realy Lynch?I think we should still compile the list of questions though. I know i am going to get flamed for this, bt maby we are over allalising. We don't know how TP was written. It could have been all thought out from the beginning (ie when they wote the piolite they already had planned out the WE and Black Lodge stuff. It could have been written by season (this seemes much more likely). Or by episode (ie: they had no idea how they woulkd solve any of these problems and just made it up as they go along). If the latter is the case then analises in inpossable because there was no ultamate desigen to try to deduce.[src]

TP ACCESS Guide pearl@spectacle.sw.stratus.com (Dan Pearl(contractor)) 1991-09-18 09:40
Seen in the bookstores: The Twin Peaks ACCESS guide. Lynch, Frost, and the publishers of the ACCESS travel guides have created a satirical guide to the fictional town of Twin Peaks. It has items of interest to the fanatic Peak-ers (such as a TP Cherry pie recipe and "Hawk"'s real name). It also contains some items reproduced from reference books (such as how to perform taxidermy) that seem to be so much filler. They would never have appeared in a real travel guide to the area. The book has few "clues" to what happens in TP. It is more of a slightly humorous satire. It DOES have a picture of the Owl Cave cave painting (i.e. "It's A MAP! Hee, Hee, Hee!") I paid $10.95 (yow!) for it at Powell's Bookstore in Portland, OR.[src]

There seems to be some misunderstanding regarding the 'Diane, it is 1:17pm...'
set of files that were posted here, a few days ago (Thanks a lot, BTW.).
These files are for your *listening* enjoyment. I'm not sure about VMS :-),
but on Unix you could follow these instructions:
1. Edit the file(s) and get rid of header and sig sections.
2. Concatenate, if there is more than 1 file.
3. Run through uudecode.
4. Uncompress.
5. Cat the new file (.au) and redirect the output to '/dev/audio':

Much of the esoteric terminology used on _Twin Peaks_ - White Lodge, Black Lodge, Dweller on the Threshold, etc - is drawn from occultists such as Helena Blavatsky, Dion Fortune, the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, and other Theosophist or Kaballistic Magicians that operated around the turn of this century. In fact, the wholesale ascribing of this Judeo-Christian derived occult world view to a northwestern native-american tribe is kinda, well, kooky and funny - like the rest of the show. May it live long on silver screen. Cheers, John[src]

First I want to express my appreciation for the original 6
postings of Diane, it is 1:17pm. I have installed them on my SUN Sparcstation
and used crontab so it goes off everyday at 1:17pm. Any further postings
of this nature would be appreciated.
Now to deal with the above posting in a kind way -- I am not into
flaming although the temptation is here. The article CLEARLY specified
what its intention was. Seek advice before complaining about articles
that you don't understand. Finally I don't think that the postings can
be made simple enough for you -- Oops!

I'm going to ask a stupid question, and if it has been asked before

Does anyone here watch STAR TREK THE NEXT GENERATION?
If so, isn't it true that Counselor Troi's mother's valet is the giant?
I believe his name in the show is Mr. Hom (say HOME).
Granted, the episodes are rare and long ago, but I have been watching the
reruns and have finally had enough in-house speculation about it. I don't
remember the actor's name so I can't be sure.
Help, anyone?

Very nice list Dave! Excellent reference material. I do however
have one observation:
> Andrew Packard [Josie's husband] [dead] Dan O'Herlihy
> Pete Martell [Catherine's husband] [dead] Jack Nance
> Thomas Eckhardt [Josie's mentor] [dead] David Warner
> Audrey Horne [dead] Sherilyn Fenn
You sure about this? :-)
I'm not at all convinced that the death of these characters has
been fully established Dave.

There is one other thing that should be said about Harry Dean
Stanton here:
He is one hell of a nice guy! :) Way back when he had just
finished working on A:I:L:E:N (one of my FAVE movies by the way)
he frequented a bar/nightclub I was manager of in west L.A.
Calif called "The Troubadour". One night over 2 or 3 drinks too
many I asked him about A:I:L:E:N (it had not yet been released)
and among other things he told me "There is this one scene where
we are hold this guy down on a table and all of a sudden blood
starts flying and sound effects start going off, we had no idea
what the hell was going. Scott hadn't told us what was going to
happen and it about scared the s___ out of us! Poor Cartwright
dammed near looked right into the camera she was so surprised!"
(It was something very close to this anyway, it's been a long time)
I very much look forward to seeing HDS in the new movie, he's a
fine actor and I don't think we see enough of him. By the way is
there anyone around here besides me who would have reall enjoyed
seeing MacLachian play the part of the indestructible bad guy in T2?

No TP in NZ higham@waikato.ac.nz 1991-09-18 20:22
Gee, writing out TP programme episodes word for word sounds wonderful, here in New Zealand we have had the third series canned, its just awful. TV3 initially hyped TP heavily but their ratings, which were never wonderful, failed to live up to expectations, they made Coop and co scapegoats. They have promised to reinstate it within 3 months so we're all hoping, the last thing we saw was Coop and Major Briggs in the forest, Briggs went for a piss and then all hell broke loose, that was over a month ago. I miss TP so much, and the news talk about the series sounds brilliant. The reason I write this is that recently some guy in Sweden was bemoaning the fact that one episode had failed to reach them, man, you're the lucky ones! If they don't reinstate TP, is there anyone out there who could copy the tapes in the meantime? I'm just desperate to know how Andy and Lucy get it together, if indeed they do! My absolute favourite quote has to be when Albert is explaining to Sheriff Truman his philosophy on peace-violence etc "The basis for this..is love... I love you Sheriff Truman", to which Coop replies wistfully, "Alberts path is a strange and difficult one". (Sorry if not totally correct!) You'll recall Doc Jacoby's audio tapes of Laura that he kept in his coconut; during one scene in the pilot he puts one in and before he puts the headphones on his head you can hear her talking about the woods, some guy with a red car etc... In this script, however, she says that last night she had a dream in which she was telling all her secrets to an old man, I assume this was later cut for whatever reason. At any rate in seems clear that DL & co. thought at least this far in advance (at least three episodes) during the pilot so its possible that they thought further ahead as well. -Gian Di Loreto (UR)[src]

Help! I am posting from Germany where they just started TP last week. I like it very much but even now I start getting confused by the great amount of different names and faces. Has anybody made a list, that describes the relationship between all the actors? This would help much to follow the story and to have a closer look at all the little details you talk about. I have seen two verisions of dune. There is the one that is just over two hours long, and there is one that is well over three hours long. the three hour one is a lot better than the two hour one, and I would like to see it again. I don't think it was the version that was in the movie theater, but I can not be sure. Does anyone have a clue as to what I am talking about? if so, e-mail me! 2fowGODSON@kuhub.cc.ukans.edu[src]

I stated quite clearly in the first part of the posting that this is a Sun SPARCstation audio file. That is, if you have a Sun SPARCstation or compatible and use the "play" program (source in /usr/demo/SOUND), you will hear Agent Cooper from the popular (but evidently not popular enough ;^) TV series "Twin Peaks" making his report to Diane. This was recorded from the TV. It will not be of any use to someone who only has access to a VMS system as VAXes do not have the audio hardware to play it. Colin Marsh brock@b17a.ingr.com (James Brock) 1991-09-19 11:22
Dear TP readers/writers: Colin Marsh is a friend of mine who is using my address to read your newsgroup. He sends me the info he wishes to post, and I post it for him. As he says, he met David Lynch through a brother. He is now fairly close to David L. and is, in my opinion, a fine writer/thinker. (I apologise for the COL./MAJOR and Wyndham/Windom snafus; I am not a TP fanatic, and Colins' writing is sometimes scrawly.) As far as I know, Colin has spoken with D.L. about this group, and D.L. is interested in your comments. You must understand, though, that this is all I know. I will probably be hearing from Colin tomorrow or Saturday. By the way, I did watch TwinPeaks closely, and while I think it was one of the best periods of American television (not saying much, am I?) D.L. made the mistake of making a continuing series (is it?) out of it. The concept of the Lodges, the incestual/spiritual relationships, the scenery of the area, all that and more made TP the best series since St. Elsewhere. But, Lynch is a film maker, not a TELEVISION director. Hey, I don't know if Audrey/Pete/Andrew are blown away. I don't know what Lynch has in his head about BOB and Cooper and al the and all the other great characters. And I doubt Colin knows. Stay on the network, keep up the deductions, the thought, and we will see what Colin arranges. An aside: It is great to see so many people remaining loyal to the series. It makes me feel good to associate with others who are discriminating and insightful and selective. -- ################################################################ James A. Without it he is unbalanced, and there is nothing to prevent his dark side from overshadowing everything and anything he does or encounters while alive in the world. This is akin to what Hawk was saying about facing one's dark side. If Coop isn't killed or if someone can't help him or his Ka to re-unite himself, then he will not get beyond his dark side and make it to the entrance of the White Lodge. TP in Japan larryy@Apple.COM (Larry Yaeger) 1991-09-19 16:54
Just a quick tidbit... some friends are visiting from Japan, who had never before heard of TP. I showed them the premiere, and they promptly went out and bought the videotape to sit, watch, and record the entire 32 hours, editing out the commercials and everything. They altered their travel plans, and are visiting Snolqualmie/ North Bend starting tomorrow, just before they return to Japan. Yesterday we went around looking for Julee Cruise and TP Soundtrack CD's, Secret Diaries, and so on. I think it helped that I had the TP Euro-movie laserdisc from Japan, with Japanese subtitles, for them to get started into it, but after that, they gleaned what they could from the English version (their command of English is limited). What fun. Yesterday, they also informed me that, having mentioned TP on their calls back to their home country, they have now learned that TP is showing in some form on TV in Japan. And it is the most recorded television show in Japan in the history of TV and VCR's. Their friends at home are all very excited about their imminent return with the entire series on tape! -- -larryy@apple.com "You wouldn't recognize a *subtle plan* if it painted itself purple, and danced naked upon a harpsichord, singing, 'Subtle Plans are Here Again'." - Edmund Blackadder[src]

As for Eckhardt, well, Jones *did* mention to Catherine that she was getting ready to bring Eckhardt's body back home. Since his collapse was witnessed by Cooper (and Harry as well, but given what happened to Josie immediately after, Harry's mind probably wasn't functioning properly for a while), it's completely reasonable to assume that Eckhardt's body was examined on the spot and determined to be dead, and that an autopsy was performed (as is SOP when a crime is involved). For Jones' remark about Eckhardt's "body" to be a lie, it would mean that Doc and Coop would have to be co-conspirators in that lie. *Not* a reasonable assumption. I actually discussed this when I posted the list last June. From my
reading of the last episode (and of episode 2016, where Josie and
Thomas die), it is very likely all of the above characters are
dead. Of course everyone is free to disagree with me, since I
could certainly be proven wrong by a third season of TP. But since
I keep the list, I make the decisions on how to resolve ambiguities.

He told Cooper in his first visit "That is all I am permitted to say," and also answered, "That cannot be revealed," when asked where he was from. Therefore, it is not unreasonable to assume that if SDC was aware of Cooper's bleeding he may not have helped him because he either knew that he didn't need to or because he was not permitted to do so. In reference to the Giant/SDC relationship, I thought it was interesting to note that in _Industrial Symphony No. 1_ (of which TP seems to be derivative of) Julee Cruise plays the part of the "Dreamself of the Brokenhearted Woman" (Laura Dern was the Brokenhearted Woman). I happened to have taped "Eerie" (liked it! looking forward
to more!), so I went back to hear the song again. The only
part that was the same as "The Nightingale" was the part of
the song that goes "for-eeeeeeeeee-ver-waaaare," which
corresponds to when Julee Cruise sings "the niiiiiigh-tin-
gaaale." (If I could post a musical staff, I would!) Other
than that, 'tweren't nothin' the same.
Of course, the first three notes also correspond with
Bernstein's "There's A Place For Us" from West Side Story
("there's-a-place..."). From the tonic note, the sequence
proceeds in an interval to a diminished seventh, and then
down a half-step to a major sixth. In the key of C major,
the three note sequence would be:
C, B-flat, A
Now the NBC network theme, however, begins on the tonic and
goes directly to the major sixth (not even trying for the
diminished seventh), and then continues down to the perfect
fourth, or:
C, A, F.
And the interval of the perfect fourth, as we all know from
every television wedding, is "here comes the bride...", or:
C, A, A, A.
THERE IS NO DOUBT that this is intended as a secret message
from NBC that all will be well for Peaks fans everywhere.
ABC strived for heights (reaching for the diminished seventh
-- seven being the number of perfection) but failed
miserably (sliding back to the major sixth) in their own
bumbling. The Nightingale theme is lost -- where will Peaks
go? But the theme takes comfort in the assurance that
"there's a place for us, somewhere, a place for us." With
the arrival of Eerie, Indiana, the song from "ForeverWare"
(the promise of preservation) lures the Nightingale theme
to NBC, where we can almost hear the Wedding March as a
foreshadow of future union. After all, "Where we come from,
the birds sing a pretty song, and there's always music in
the air." Isn't it obvious?

Report from "Fire Walk With Me" on location (kinda long) rhaller@phloem.uoregon.edu (Rich Haller) 1991-09-20 12:38
Visited Snoqualmie/North Bend on Monday and Wednesday (9/16,18). We almost gave up when we stumbled on them filming at a REALLY funky motel outside North Bend as someone has previously posted. I'll post a report on our visit later. For now, I'll give you some info on the shoot and tips on how to find them. We met two women, Nena and later, her friend, Debbie (?), who had been there everyday since the beginning between them. If one couldn't make it the other did. Debbie even cancelled a trip to Europe in order to be there for the whole shoot. Some of these tips are from Nena and Debbie. According to Nena and another source, they will be filming for about 2 more weeks, (say, until roughly Oct 2). Their day off is normally Sunday (hey, he's an eagle scout, right?). Cast members come and go, so who will be there is pretty much a crap shoot, except for Laura and David Lynch. When we left Wednesday, Jack Nance and Joan Chen had just arrived to shoot some scenes, but I don't know how long they will be there. James was there as well, shooting scenes with Laura. Ray Wise was there but we didn't see him. The OAM was there but not sure for how long. Looks like they may shoot some scenes with Mrs. Tremond and the creamed corn kid. I saw her character's name on a SAG sheet and David Lynch's son was around. Looked like they were going to shoot at the Mar-T on Friday since someone was touching up the paint on the sign and Debbie said it was going to be closed Friday. That would imply Norma and Shelly. Rumor was that both HST and Coop were expected before they completed shooting. Coop has, of course, already been there and gone. My advice to those who are going to visit the shoot is to go up to one of the security people, introduce yourself, ask them what the ground rules are for spectators and if you want to get an autograph or whatever, which cast members are open to that and how to approach them. In the long run, that may get you more than just barging in. They run around with headsets on and raise the hue and cry when it is time to be quiet for a shot. Just watch for a while and you'll figure out who they are. One is Craig MacLachlan. I didn't recognize him even though he politely, but firmly, moved me further away the first day we were there until my daughter and Debbie figured it out. If you meet him, tell him Rich, the guy from alt.tv.twin-peaks in the "Save the Pine Weasel t-shirt says 'Hi', and that I didn't recognize him without the pawn in his mouth. :-) Nena and Debbie warned us to stay away from 'blue hat' (you'll recognize him) and Julie (we weren't sure who she was), but said that most of the others were pretty good about answering questions like whether they are finished with this location and if so, where they will shoot next. If you are going to be there for more than one day, definitely try to find out where they will be the next day. If all else fails, Nena recommends waiting until they are through for the day and asking the truck drivers. If you run into Nena and Debbie, say hi for me. To find where they are shooting initially, cruise around the places that were in the series keeping your eyes peeled for a bunch of trucks and vans . Closed off streets and police stopping traffic are another clue. Just keep driving around and you'll find them eventually. Good luck! -Rich[src]

However, the melody ends up on the major third of the
chord being played by the accompaniment, which would indicate
that the tonic is actually F (using your example notes).

Again, I hear the tonic as F in this case, since the entire

A short movie David made for the french magazine "Le Figaro" 10(0)th
year celebration or something. It's about Slim (Harry Dean Stanton), a
nearly deaf ranch-owner and his two hands Dusty ("Miller" in RepoMan)
and Pete ("Pete" in TP). They spot a strange man approaching the farm
and capture him. He's Pierre, a fullblown french man, beret on head,
snails in pocket, wine and baquettes in suitcase. It takes a while for
them to figure this out, he speaks only french. ("He might be some
kind of goldang alien spy!") They understand who he is when they find
some french fries in his suitcase ("Get the ketchup!).
Slim shoots a crow and a snake. An indian, Broken Feather appears
("Hawk" in TP), he's been tracking the frenchman for 10 days ("He kept
tossing out snails. Scared me!") Pierre talks in french about
Manhattan, Indians, Hoboken and a small car with a zebra on it.
In the evening they have a party with some 'dream scenes' with dancing
girls (I think "Josie", "Audrey" and "Donna" are in there), horses and
a country&western singer. The frenchman raises a model of the Statue
Of Liberty and everyong cheers "Viva La France". Two girls wants to
go to bed with Pierre ("Voule'z vous coucher avec moi..") Slim sings
a country song and makes out.
In the morning they sit out on the farm, Pierre admires the american
pancakes ("Flapjacks as big as a saddle-blanket!"). The indian wants a
suitcase just like Pierre. Slim finds a snail on his body ("Damn!")
and throws it away. A closeup of it with flies on it ends the movie!
This is out of memory, I'm propably leaving some out. Yes it's pretty
bizarre, quite funny and very Lynch! Too bad very few of you will get
to see this one.
Does anyone have a list of Lynch'es productions? I know about
Eraserhead, Dune, Elephant Man, Blue Velvet, Wild At Heart, Twin
Peaks, that new sitcom, American Cronicles and A Cowboy And A
Frenchman. Anything else?

I was shocked at Cooper's response to Windam Earl. An FBI agent, faced with a
serial killer of known appearance, who knows the killer is in the area, and
what does he do? Does he organise massive searches of the forest and the town?
Are there pictures of WE all over the town with "Have You Seen This Man"
written on them? Does he call in another 50 agents to help capture this
blot on the Bureau's copybook? No, he gets himself a new girlfriend!
I wonder if Cooper's mental degeneration may result from his association with
the Giant? Senor Droolcup's idiocy may not be entirely accidental. Of course
the real reason is that the original Cooper would have solved all of TP's
mysteries in about 5 episodes. Still it doesn't excuse the dissappearance of
the wonderfully interesting Coop of the pilot and his replacement by the FBI's
answer to Shirley Maclaine!
But you're right - this has probably been thrashed to death: I just couldn't
help posting about it. This is the tragedy of the new news addict.

FBI jacket like agent Cooper wore once or twice in the series? I've seen
someone wearing one on a chat show here in the UK but I've know idea where I

If anyone in the UK has seen one in a shop (London, Birmingham, Liverpool, e

If anyone else is interested I'm report the replies into the conf.

Fill me in on the last couple episodes? please? jespah@milton.u.washington.edu (Kathleen Hunt) 1991-09-21 22:01
Hi all! I have a request. But first, a long-winded intro: Last year at this time I was the TP buff to end all TP buffs, and had practically memorized the first season and written myself a 15-page cribsheet of clues and miscellaneous hoo-ha to remember for the start of the second season. I happened to move to Seattle, hooked up to the net, discovered this newsgroup and was in HEAVEN. Hey, I was even LIVING right near the "real TP"! A good chunk of my first year in grad school was spent over-analyzing TP. Boy, it was fun. [I feel so nostalgic now, recalling those days of happy obsession...gee, I'm practically getting teary-eyed about it...:-/ ] But then TP started to go downhill...even I had to admit it...I stopped compiling my quote list...stopped memorizing clues...and then I was shipped off to Alaska for a couple months to study tundra birds. By the time I got back I'd missed the last weekly episode as well as the two-hour conclusion, and my friend Katie who often tapes TP was in Prudhoe Bay studying sandpipers and obviously had not taped it from there! (*real* *bad* TV reception. Plus, no VCR.) And also, well, I had psychologically abandoned TP, having gotten a life temporarily :-). I also thought the movie wasn't going to happen; I somehow heard a report that McLachlan said he didn't want to play Cooper? (Did I imagine this?) Well, a few weeks ago I happened to hear a news report that a chemical spill by the Snoqualmie River wasn't going to be cleaned up for a few days due to the TP movie's filming schedule. My first thought, good little conservation biologist that I am (:-/), was not "My god, they're delaying cleanup of a CHEMICAL SPILL just for a MOVIE??" but instead was "The TP movie *IS* being filmed! Yaay!" And THEN, Katie informed me that her mother had dutifully taped the two-hour conclusion while Katie was up at Prudhoe Bay. Aren't moms great? ...I watched it last night. Zap! What a thrill to see the red-curtain room again and to just *roll* in it for ages and ages with all sorts of backward talk and Lodge gobblydegook and BOB scenes. I just *live* for red-curtain scenes and cryptic clues. Finally I get to the point... I definitely missed a couple episodes. The last one I remember is the one where they discovered the cave and saw the map. But I don't remember that one very clearly. And there was definitely at least one after that that I *never* saw. So, my questions are: 1) WHAT HAPPENED between when they saw the map, and the two-hour conclusion? 2) Anyone have any tapes of those last couple episodes that they'd like to lend me? Please? If you can make copies, I can pay shipping & tape cost & even a little fee, or, if you just want to lend I *promise* to give them back. I am *super reliable*. 3) What is the deal with the movie? What is it about? What the hell is going on? What did I hear or imagine about McLachlan? Am I spelling his name wrong? 4) I had a dream that I went to the Snoqualmie/North Bend area on innocuous, non-TP business, and accidentally met some of the film crew, had a lovely chat and managed to convey to them just how much *fun* it was to be a TP buff last year. Curiously, none of the cast or big names appeared in my dream -- just anonymous TP crew. I also dreamed that Katie (my TP-buff friend) and I were tracking radio-collared marbled murrelet fledglings from their nests near Snoqualmie all the way to Puget Sound, racing underneath them in a truck as they flew way overhead. (Marbled murrelets are open-ocean birds that breed in old-growth forest, and are getting as politically hot as the spotted owl.) Does this mean anything? :-) Thank god I still have the Jan. 26th episode on tape. If I hadn't seen that, I'd *really* have been confused. :-) Kathleen -- Kathleen Hunt / U.W. But then the word spread so many European countries have or are now showing it on TV. The Euro-TP movie was in video-stores long before the series got here. I haven't met anyone that saw it before the series though. Beautiful Nightmare & Anamolies anton@paros.tss.COM (Jeff Anton) 1991-09-22 18:32
Three times over the course of the TP series some character mentions something which, I feel, defines the whole series' tone. The first reference is by Donna in the second or third episode talking to her mother the morning after James is first taken to jail. Donna tells her mother something like: It's like I'm living the most beautiful dream and the most terrible nightmare. I've forgotten the second reference. The third is by Joan Reneux (I think that is not the correct spelling.) He is answering Cooper's question 'Is my death so important to you?' Here is the answer to the best of my memory: My two brothers died. I hold you responsible. Twin Peeks used to be a happy place. My brothers and I deal dope to the high schoolers and the truck drivers. One Eyed Jack's serves the tourist and the buisnessmen. But then a pretty girl dies, and suddenly the quiet people, they are quiet no more. Suddenly the simple dream, becomes the nightmare. Maybe you brought the nightmare with you? And, if you die, the nightmare may die with you? Although not a vocal reference, the Cooper's dream in the first season is a beautiful nightmare. The 'Beautiful Nightmare' concept seems to shape much of Lynch's work. Anamolies: Here are some anomolies I've seen in the series. The Pawn at the gazibo needs about six people to move it. I dought that Leo and Windham could have got it there. But maybe they stole a forklift or something. The Civil War band is assembled in a room with Ben and Co. Then Jerry and Audrey go to another room and discuss Ben's will and the band marches through the hall. But then the band is back in the original room immediately. Peoples' blood types change. The tatto that Maj. Briggs got when he disappearred was three triangles and later Cooper is using three diamonds in his drawings and in the cave. The waiting room statues are different between the two seasons. (Check the arms - I think first season they are missing, and in the final show they are present at least for the statue in the waiting room(s) while the one in the hall is missing the arms.) ((Not counting the recollection of the dream by Cooper as assisted by the Giant.)) What happened to Donna's sisters in the final episodes? Shouldn't Donna wonder about them and not just herself. (Birth certificate should have mother >maiden< name) also Earlier discussion of repeated Pea passing.[src]
Re: Bowie in TP movie higham@waikato.ac.nz 1991-09-22 18:34
Yeah, about the discussion re: the TP movie or Euro movie as everyone calls it, and the TP 'pilot', I am getting very confused. Here in New Zealand, the Twin Peaks movie appeared ages ago, with the boiler room ending in which Mike, Coop and Harry discover Bob avec heaps of candles. Mike appears to have a heart attack and die, Coop I think blows away Bob then we cut to the dwarf and Lauras cuz Maddie whispering into Coop (aged Coop's ) ear. (whew! Sorry, long sentence). Yeah, so that was the 'movie', then the pilot was different, movie length but from what I can remember Bob didn't appear and hence from that the series is able to continue. So you have the movie and its dwarf ending, now I heard from someone that David Lynch didn't want the movie to end that way but was constrained by budgets or producers or something and got pissed off and threw that ending in quickly. We talked about the meaning of the '25 years on' scene for ages and wondered how the series would relate to it. I wonder if David is out there if he could tell us a bit about how the series is written etc, presumably the movie was made and then the series sprung from that, but how much of it was written and planned, or is it all just tacked on as we go, movie, series 1 and 2, 3, then second movie...? Also, and this is probably way, way off, but when the series started, I remember being slightly confused by a number of characters appearing to be similar. For example, Norma and Shelley, man, they look just like sisters in the series, very similar looking, and how about Ben Horne and Leland Palmer? They look related! Donna and Audrey as well are close in terms of their appearance. After this I get a bit hazy, Laura and Maddie of course ARE identical, mmmm, Harry Truman and Ed, nah. Anyway, there may be others out there, or am I just seeing things? Finally, could the people in Seattle keep their contributions re: Fire Walk With ME, rolling in, I find it fascinating to read about the upcoming shoots, who is there to film etc etc. Bye groovers, Tom Higham, Radiocarbon Dating Lab, Chemistry Division, University of Waikato, Hamilton. Yes, it certainly seems that way. :) Here, too, I guess I should

Dark Shadows mailing list broehl@sunee.waterloo.edu (Bernie Roehl) 1991-09-23 05:37
A mailing list has been set up to discuss the television series Dark Shadows. Dark Shadows was a daily soap opera that ran on ABC in the late sixties (ending in 1971). It had a Gothic feel to it, and featured storylines involving witchcraft, vampires, werewolves and the supernatural. It was (appropriately enough) "brought back from the dead" by NBC for a single season last year. It also spawned two feature films, a series of paperback novels, and lots more; the series is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. There are a number of international fan clubs for the series, but so far there has been no newsgroup or (electronic) mailling list devoted to it. Now there is. If you would like to be added to the Dark Shadows mailing list, send mail to "shadows-request@sunee.waterloo.edu". To make contributions to the list, send mail to "shadows@sunee.waterloo.edu". The list is expected to be low-volume (i.e. very few articles/week). If the volume gets too great, I'm willing to set it up in digest format. There will be announcements about the upcoming Dark Shadows convention in New York City (which will feature almost all the original cast), reviews of various books related to the series, and more. Please pass this information on to anyone you know who is interested in the series, especially on other networks that have electronic mail gateways to the Internet. -- Bernie Roehl, University of Waterloo Electrical Engineering Dept Mail: broehl@sunee.waterloo.edu OR broehl@sunee.UWaterloo.ca BangPath: watmath!sunee!broehl Voice: (519) 885-1211 x 2607 [work][src]

Well, I just watched the European ending of TP and I must say I found it lacking in much the same way as the 2+ hour version of DUNE. As I have said before, I liked the 4 hour version that apparently only appeared here in the midwest United States. But there were some redeeming events in this version. Those of you who watch this board frequently will remember that I had asked what exactly the reference to the gum meant. The dwarf seems to know. I was a little dissappointed that BOB didn't talk in that cool version of english (reversed). I had a thought that I might share with you. Seeing as Dave Lynch is into a sort of Neo-Bhuddist-Islamic-Judeo-cult thing (as justification I refer you to DUNE and all of its islamic references, even though they come from Herbert and Coop's emphatuation with Tibet). Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't there a theme running thru Bhuddism or perhaps Islam that we are given signposts (portents, etc) on our trek to nirvanna, or something like that? It's been a long time since my East Asian Religion classes, but I think I remember something about that. Therefore, after much rambling, couldn't the Giant simply be a marker, portent, sign, or whatever. Justification: His only purpose seems to be relaying information as in "it is happening again..."etc. He is unable to enter into real-time actions, and only appears to cooper. Thoughts? I don't mind if you refute my claims on Bhuddism or Islam, and I meant no disrespect. As a simple Humanist, I do not claim to know anything. 2fowGODSON@kuhub.cc.ukans.edu[src]

TP visit experience (long) sjohnson@texas.vlsi.sgi.com (Scott Johnson) 1991-09-23 18:33
Whew! What a trip. I'll try to make this short 'cause otherwise I might go on for too long. I just got back from the Snoq/North Bend area. I spent two hours or so there Friday the 20th, and one hour there Saturday the 21st. I forgot to print out and take with me all my suggestions from the netters, so we wandered around a bit at first, not really knowing where to look. It was eerie just entering the area, recognizing the mountains, but not really much else. The area itself is much more open than I imagined. I guess I imagined a tiny little town surrounded by the ubiquitous cloying forest. Beautiful, none the less. First we headed to the Falls, since there were signs for it. The Salish Lodge (Great Northern's exterior) seemed nice, but pricy. The view of the falls was perfect, and gorgeous. Inside there was a wall of magazine articles (near the bathrooms down from the registration desk) mostly about the Lodge, but one was about where to go in the "real Twin Peaks." It was quite informative, telling where a lot of the sites are, as well as other information like where they shot Pete's sighting of LP (somewhere *west* of Seattle), the insides of the Great Northern (Kianu Lodge in Seattle), where the cast stayed during the filming of the show (Cypress Inn in Seattle), etc. It also pointed us to the RR Diner (Mar-T Cafe). Heading to North Bend, we stopped by the RR to check out the inside and outside, only (with MUCH dismay) to find out they were filming there ALL day Thursday, the day before (what a pisser). It was amazing how much different it looks on the inside, while still looking the same. The layout of the RR is different than the Mar-T (i.e. they shot things to make it look bigger, and the kitchen and bathroom are in different places because of the way the did the shots, if that makes sense). But the owner said they did all of the shooting there, and didn't change a thing. They did leave that big ice cream cone behind, but otherwise she said there were few props added, save a few posters for consistency (they had covered the TP posters located on the walls). Had a turkey sandwich there (dollop of mayonaisse), but no cherry pie (I'm not a big pie fan.) Down the street a few yards is a store which sells tons o' memorabilia, including a map to the local TP sites. Using this we saw: the Ronnette Railroad Trestle (more later), the Sheriff's office building (an office bldg at Weyerhauser, aka. the Packard Mill), the site of the James/Donna/ Laura home movie (at the winery; gorgeous view of the area), the Roadhouse (the Colonial Inn, more later), the "entrance" into Twin Peaks (a road leading towards the railroad trestle, no sign, obviously), and TP High (Mt. Si High, more later). Couldn't find Big Ed's Gas Farm (didn't try very hard, actually a kite store). Our first encounter with filming was near the Polaski trestle. We nonchalantly parked behind this old Roadmaster, then realized something was funny. A woman with blonde hair was sitting in the car by herself. In front of that was a pickup with two guys standing around it. Then there was a cop. We walked towards the cop, and as we passed him, he wouldn't let us go any further 'cause they were shooting a drive-by there. Bingo. Looking back at the Buick, we realized that the woman in the car was supposed to be Laura, but actually looked nothing at all like her. But from a distance, who can tell? While we were there, they filmed that darn drive-by at least six times. It was maybe a five second clip, based on the distance that the cameras could see. I couldn't figger out why so many cuts, but I'm no movie expert. Since there were no real stars here, we headed on. Our next encounter was at the Roadhouse, aka the Colonial Inn. This looks very little like the Roadhouse, 'cause they use just one side of it for filming. Here they were setting up for a night shot. Lots of guys (and girls) in leather were hanging out. We decided not to. We talked to one of the crew for a sec, until the subject turned towards the Huskies and the Stanford shirt I was wearing. Leaving the Colonial Inn, we spotted a van with a L/F productions placard on the dashboard. We followed it, coming upon a crew in the Fall City neighborhood. We parked and watched a crew filming (supposedly, we could see none of the actual filming) inside a house there and telling everyone to be quiet everytime they started rolling. About ten minutes later, Dana Ashbrook (Bobby Briggs) and Sheryl Lee (Laura Palmer) walked out. They were taking a fifteen minute lunch break, piling into a van ten feet in front of us. The scene must have been emotional, Sheryl looked sad with runny makeup, but when a guy next to us called her name, her face lit up with that (absolutely, amazingly, undescribably) incredible Laura Palmer smile. Wow! We were floored. Dana seemed kinda like an uncaring jerk, but it's hard to say. On the way back to the car, we just happened to walk by Mr. Lynch himself talking to someone in the street. I turned around to make sure my friend recognized him, then turned around again to have him walking right at me. I shook his hand, and I'm sure I said something fawning, but I don't remember what. If I was prepared, I would have gotten his auto- graph and maybe even asked him about a.t.tp. I did get a chance to get his picture. He looked like he could have been out fishing, and was the nicest guy. I didn't know what to imagine, but I kinda assumed he'd be an arrogant jerk. Totally the opposite. Very polite and seemingly caring, but it's hard to say. After that, we headed out, and came back Saturday only to find that they were filming up at Snohomish, about 25 miles north. According to the Mar-T woman (who seems to know everything about the filming schedules) they couldn't use Mt. Si High 'cause it changed too much since the series, so they use a high school up there. I guess they probably head up there every Saturday, so school will be out and since they take just Sunday off. The owner of the diner is very nice and willing to talk about TP, especially, I assume, if you give her your business. She seems to know quite a few of the cast as well as David pretty well. She had the utmost of respect for Lynch, saying what a professional he is. She says his shooting schedule lasts from early morning to sometimes as late as 2:30am. So, if you are planning a trip (and if you live close, you should), you should check out these things, and look for the filming. But hurry, the filming according to Ms. Mar-T is over in two weeks (hopeful release in 6-9 months) for this area, then back to the studios. The best way to find the filming to to check all the known TP spots, and look for tan and blue vans with L/F TP placards on the dash, and follow them. My guess is Snohomish on Saturdays, and Snoq/NB/Fall City on M-F. I even have the number of the Mar-T diner, and if you are a capable phone politician, you might be able to weasel some info out of them without making the dash over there. I don't, however, want to advertise her number all over the net. Also, check the article at the Salish Lodge. It gives a lot of good info. And find the map at the store across from the Mar-T in downtown North Bend. Well, sorry to be so long winded. Enjoy the trip while you can. sj[src]

And, > > if you die, the nightmare may die with you? This may be one of the key speeches of the whole series. I think the Cooper autobiography hints that evil has been pursuing Coop since his earliest days, as symbolized toward the end of the book as the blue man. This would fit with Coop's BOBification at the end of the second season. Perhaps the whole Laura thing was part of a plot on the part of the forces of evil to draw Coop to Twin Peaks (much as, in the Exorcist, the possession was a ruse to set up a battle between Pazuzu (sp?) and the priest). It is happening again. It is happening again. It is happening again. Joe Zitt ...cs.utexas.edu!kvue!zitt!joe (512)450-1916[src]

Wow Bob Wow??? eefps@marlin.jcu.edu.au (Francesco Peter Savaglio) 1991-09-23 21:40
hello world I just wanted to know of any thoughts on the one quote that's bugged me the most. What ,if any, significance does the quote "Wow Bob Wow" have????? Please keep it reasonable. I don't think I can handle references to Zen or other Lynch movies. Was TLMFAP excited about something or what?
